5 comments about Initial 10.2" Portable DVD Player - IDM-1250.
- We bought this unit to replace a Polaroid that gave out after about 6 months. Fortunately we had purchased the unit thru Target.com with the $30 extended warranty so we got a full refund of our purchase price.
Initially (no pun intended ;-) I was concerned about some of the comments I had seen from other reviewers. Ill address them individually below.
- The comment about having to always select dvd or usb or card isnt present on my unit. It does prompt when you first turn it on, but without selecting something other than dvd it quickly defaults to dvd and just starts playing the dvd.
- The comment about large jpg's freezing the unit. Well I guess it depends on what your definition of freeze is (and Im also a little unclear how your 20D had a picture on an SD card given the 20D has a compact flash slot). On my unit I have taken the SD card straight from my canon S500 (7.1 Megapixel) and put it in the player and looked at photos. Granted it takes the unit awhile (ie. read slow) to read in the large photos from my camera but it does it without crashing the player etc.
- The build quality of the unit seems much more rugged than the polaroid it replaced so it appears to be a good unit, but unfortunately with portable dvd players the true test is the test of TIME.
Overall the reason we bought this player was because of DIVX. My daughter is a Wiggles, BluesClues, Hi-5 junkie. I record all of these shows on the Tivo (in Best Quality), transfer them to my PC, run them thru DirectshowDump, then thru the Divx encoder. I can get nearly 40 shows onto one DVD when they are all DIVX and the quality is just fine.
Ill revise this post later if the device dies an early death, otherwise if you dont see a post from me you can safely assume that it is still running without incident.
I purchased this unit thru Target.com which has Amazon as the backend processor. The unit arrived very quickly and with good packaging as Ive come to expect from Amazon.

- The IDM-1250 does have an A-B repeat mode to it, and what I like is when playing cd's you can keep the screen closed, and the advance buttons and pause and play buttons are on the front,so you don't need the remote to change to different tracks. The picture is just as good as the Philips with 12bit video dacs, and you get the added features of the multi-card reader and USB port. The sound is not bad as far as voulme through the built in speakers, but like other players using headphones makes quite a difference.I would recommend this player to those who like a larger screen portable,as a side note it will read dvd-rw in the vr-mode.
- I have a Powerbook G4 with a 17" display that I was using to play DVD's. I thought it was too big and the battery life too short. I decided to purchased a dedicated portable DVD player. I was pleasantly surprised by the workmanship and the quality of the unit. I would highly recommend this player. I recommend the 10" screen.
- When I got this DVD player I thouht it was great, the features are nice and the i/o ports are many. After about 3 weeks the super sensitive switch that shuts the lcd off when the lid closes started shutting the screen off even when the lid was open, the weight of the white plastic pin held the switch down. Then the next week the hinges gave out, they are solid metal hinges anchored to very soft and brittle plastic, very annoying.
- I bought one of these units back in March from online Wal-Mart. The picture quality for DVD's was excellent. The sound was good too and it had many features not found in other competitors. I really started to like this unit a lot until I placed the CF card from my digital camera into their card slot. Again, the picture quality was excellent when in full screen mode. When viewing in thumbnail mode, the pictures were quite blurry. This was okay since I wouldn't normally use this mode anyway. What really turned me off was the slide show feature. Each picture is displayed for 30 seconds regardless of the picture's resolution. There was no button to force advancement to the next slide or to alter the time slice. This was unacceptable and the reason I returned the unit.

2 comments about Yamaha DVD-S2700BL Single Disc DVD Player, Black.
- Before I purchased the DVD-S2700 I was using the Yamaha DVD-S1500 which I owned for the past 2 years. Anything I burned on my computer played back on the DVD-S1500 without a problem, every disk played back perfectly.
I purchased the DVD-S2700 about 2 weeks ago, to gain the advantage of the HD playback of the unit for my Plasma TV, the first disk I played, the picture quality was very good, and the HD quality was GREAT and the sound was also GREAT, but then the picture started to skip, pause, skew, and freeze up, the whole disk was not that way but it happened enough to be very annoying, and should no be happening on disks that played back perfectly not only on my old Yamaha DVD-S1500 but other brand player my friends have. I tested a few disks I played back on the DVD-S2700 just to make sure it was not the disks fault!!!!
Then I played a DL disk I burned, it played the first time with the same skips, pauses, skews, and freeze ups.......but the second time I wanted to play the same DL disk the unit gave me a message "Unknown Disk"....What the hell is this, if it play back once what's with this message. Before I got this message, the unit seemed to reset with the picture going black on my tv and the unit turning off then back on?????????
Then I keep getting a clicking sound from the disk tray when a disk is loaded, like something is skipping or slipping, or going beyond it's limit.
After spending $900 for this unit, I never expected such garbage from Yamaha!!!
All I can say is, STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE, SAVE YOUR MONEY...Look at another manufactures.
- I've been using Amazon for years, but this is my first review. I just think it's a shame to give this DVD player a 1 star!
I owned the previous generation of this player, which was no good. It was SUPER slow to load, etc. Thankfully, it broke, and the A/V installers replaced it (as it was under warranty) with this model.
I haven't had it for very long, but I love it. It's solid, fast to load discs (for a universal player!), very nice and clean looking, responsive, and the picture is fantastic. FYI, my screen is a 42" Fujitsu plasma, purchased last year. Also, it is dead-silent when playing, unlike, for example, a Marantz DVD player I owned which you could hear from the sofa if the volume wasn't load enough!. Thus the reason I think the other reviewers unit is broken. NOTE: I just put in a disk. If you put you ear against the unit, you can head a rapid tic-tic-tic sound when playing--as you can from all cd/dvd players--but from 6" away, nothing.
Also, it sounds like the other reviewer uses the player differently that I do. I pretty much play rented DVD movies with it, I don't burn disks, etc.
Also, I am going to buy a second player for another room today, hooking it up to a projector.
Having said all that, the Denon DVD-2930CI also gets great reviews, and is in this price range. I suspect the audio on the Yamaha is better, though.
Just offering a second opinion!

5 comments about Mintek MDP-1770 7-Inch Portable DVD Player.
- I don't have the space to explain all the places this thing has been. True it does pause on some titles, it does refuse to play on occasion. I bought it in Oct 03 before going to Afghanistan. While I was there I used it virtually everyday for 9 months. I brought it back home and used it in the car and house for 17 months with a 2-year-old constantly beating on it. Everytime I thought it was gone, it came back to life. Now I've spent 4 months in Iraq without a problem. Blow the dust out every once in a while and have patience. Maybe I just got lucky but I'd do it again.
On a final note, when the remote came up missing, the Mintek website still has the model predominantly listed and all the accessories are still available for replacement. I have a Kodak camera I bought last Christmas (2004) and I can barely find a mention of it on their site.
- I purchased this as a gift. Christmas day we had to call Mintek. It seized up. The tech lady said "just take your finger and slide the optics back and forth a few times... that usually fixes it.." Well.. I'm no genius on laser optics and all the gearing involved, but that does not sound like a great "fix". I have been on the phone with these folks numbers of times. It continues to seize up, refuse to turn on and assorted other problems. Now I have sent it to them to replace. Mintek lady calls me and says they just received it and will send it back in (5) FIVE weeks. I yelled "put a new one in the mail and send it." No... evidently it comes in with a "Batch" and can only go out with a "Batch". Evidently Mintek only ships stuff out every 5 weeks of so. I have visions of young Chinese with their fingers on the optics sliding them back and forth....
Bottom line... If you have a choice. Choose something else!!!
- RELIABILITY
Purchased this in mid-2004 -- used for lots of car trips, airplane trips, and motels. Still works. This is quite a robust little DVD player, and a darn good buy.
Black screen problem -- it seemed to get a bit confused; turn it off, switch to the output type you want (onscreen is 'tft', a different display is 'video'). The black screen problem went away. Note, even when the screen is black, you can see the image in strong light, it's just that the light behind the screen is not on because it thinks you're watching a different TV.
It starting making clicking noises a couple of years ago as the disk spins around. Obviously, this is not a harbinger of doom, as it has still been running strong.
I had problems with it recognizing a disk, once. Turns out there was condensate on the lens, so I dried it and the problem was again resolved.
FEATURES
Pretty well listed everywhere else. Yes the image is good. Yes the sound is better through earphones. Battery life is 2.5 hours...still, after 2 years.
- Mintek has no customer service. Sent a Dvd player to them for minor repair, after 2 months they wanted $60 to repair. I refused and they sent back the player totally disabled. Do not buy from this company!
- The first time I tried to play a DVD on the player ,it didn't work. The disc stopped every 10-15 seconds. I had to start it all over again repeatedly. After 6-8 tries, I gave up and sent it back for a refund which I still haven't recieved. Don't even think of buying this product.
