5 comments about Samsung DVD-VR320 DVD Recorder.
- a DVD VR 320. And it has been in the shop twice already, Under warranty. Right now it is in New Jersey at Samsung's CVE repair center getting worked on for the exact problem that you are describing!
2nd time around. I found a link on the web, that said this was a problem related to OVER HEATING. What is happening is that the power supply overheats, you can feel the heat comming out of the back of the combo unit blowing, and then dust builds up, and then""" Its skips, freeze frames on you during play back, I even had to unplug the thing just to get it going again!... The Unit does what it is suppose to do, otherwise, this issue has really "Irritated me greatly".... I've not had it freeze during burning, but I have wondered about that? UM? I've e-mailed samsung on this problem to their main office, and to their actual repair center, and still no response from anyone! Its still sitting in New Jersey RIGHT NOW!
I've been without a machine for 2 months almost? This sucks! I paid almost close to $300.00 for it, and now I had to pay the 30.00 repair fee under warranty, and shipping cost the first time around. NOW, I have more invested in it, and don't even have it! I"m frustrated. Something is up! Again this is the
DVR-VR 320 Combo unit that does just about what the 325 does. I've had nothing but trouble with it!
:( sorry, samsung, I'm just tellin it like it is. You have the unit in your possession right now. What are you going to do about this situation on my hands?? Contact me! You have the unit.
Samsung is Stone Walling me right now... No player back yet,, No communication from them yet..
Watch out! I even called the Repair center in New Jersey, no reponse from them either!
- I put the firmware on this thing to fix the freeze problem. Now it does not work at all. The install died in the middle. I've tried to call Samsung, but after being on hold for several hours, I gave up. I've emailed service three times over two weeks, and have not gotten a response. I recently bought one of their LCD HDTVs, and I really like it. Sure hope it does not break because I don't think I could reach service to fix it. I WILL NEVER BUY A SAMSUNG PRODUCT AGAIN!!!!!
- I just want to echo some of the other reviews in that if you attempt to update the firmware it will destroy the machine. Mine locked up and would not open the DVD drawer after failing the update. I just wish I could rescue all the recordings that I have made with it but had not yet finalized. Any solutions?
- I know that the freezing problem and the problem of firmware updates completely hosing this device have been numerously mentioned, but I thought I'd add my name to the list. Mine is also now nothing but a vcr as the dvd tray won't open after a firmare update.
I also wanted to mention the poor DVD compatibility. I tried 5 different brands of DVDs (all DVD-R) before finding one this thing would take. Even then, it would quite often record for about 5 seconds, then freeze and you had to power the unit off and on. (the reason for me attempting the failed firmware update). I had to do this several times before the thing would finally keep recording.
Another annoyance was the fact that the title of the DVD (what you see in windows explorer) when you stick it in your computer was always SAMSUNG DVD. Why bother going through the painstaking process of naming the disc with the remote? I couldn't ever figure out anywhere that name was actually used.
Like other reviewers, I also found it annoying how long it took the device to recognize a DVD (and even MUCH longer for it to recognize a blank DVD-R). Seriously, I'd put the DVD in, THEN start popping the popcorn and hope that it would be playing by the time I got back.
Samsung also only ever published one firmware update, which even if you do get it to work, doesn't seem to fix anything. This device should have never made it to market. I will definitely be VERY wary of Samsung products in the future.
- This is one of the most regrettable purchases I've ever made. After working fine for about 6 months, little 'quirks' began creeping into its operation, until becoming constant: sound/video don't sync - leaving you with a recording seeming to be a badly dubbed film; unit regularly freezes completely, requiring disconnection of power to simply be able to turn it on or off; DVD recording will abruptly stop - even with the best of media (new OR proven); I feel badly about dumping the thing because it was a (then-) well-researched surprise gift purchase my wife made for me and at the time, it was highly rated. Peoples' reviews have changed, and I'm here to warn you as well: DO NOT BUY THIS MISERABLE PIECE OF GARBAGE. I will NEVER buy another Samsung ANYTHING again.

5 comments about Toshiba SD-3990 Progressive Scan DVD Player.
- total piece of junk. It worked for a few months and then started to give the bad disk error.
Worst yet, too light to use as a boat anchor... so it is not even good enough to be used for that.
- The DVD player broke after one use. The DVD player reads no disc everytime i insert a disc. If you call customer service they will replace it with the SD 4000. Seems as if this was a common problem.
- I received this as a gift about 14 months ago and earlier this week I suddenly got the "No Disc" message everyone else seems to get. I searched every corner of the internet for a solution. I opened it up and unplugged things and replugged them (yes, I did the ribbon thing that worked for some people) but nothing fixed it, not even shaking it or hitting it. Because of this, I will never buy Toshiba. How about a recall???
- Ok, I barely watch DVDs at home, however it is always nice to have a DVD player to suite your entertainment needs every once in a while.
Please don't buy this one, you want something that will last forever and will not just break all of the sudden even if you don't use it. I used to think that Toshiba was that leader brand in "home entertainment" systems but not anymore. This DVD player was a tease, it looked perfect, simple and user friendly, but just the fact that so many people are having the same issue is an offense to all customers. One DVD player braking is understandable but when you browse in Google or just in this site and find out that many people are going through the same hassle, it says that quality control did not do their job.
I will stay loyal to other brands such as Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp or LG as a last resource.
Sorry if I am harsh but enough is enough.
- I have owned this player for almost 2 years and have been very satisfied. Many other reviewers seem to have had a ton of problems. This player has played everything I have thrown in it, including downloaded .AVI files and PAL formatted DVDs from Europe. My DiVx DVDs play flawlessly. By reading these reviews, I am wondering if I got the only good one Toshiba made. Either way, I love this thing!

5 comments about 10.2" TFT Widescreen Portable DVD Player Model.
- I looked around for a portable DVD unit that would play multiple disk formats. This player fits the bill - according to its specs, it will play DVD+-RW, CD-R/RW, and Kodak Picture CDs. So far, I've only tested it on commercial DVDs and DVD-Rs, all which play fine.
Video quality is fine and audio via headphones is more than adequate. (Audio quality via the small onboard speakers is about on par with laptop speakers.) The player makes some noise spinning up a DVD upon first play and spinning down a DVD after a stop but there is virtually no noise during playback. Video and audio outputs are fairly minimal so it's not the ideal player if you plan on routinely hooking it up to your TV. Additional accessories are available including a component (RGB) video adaptor.
Most invaluable about this player, however, is that it can be made Region Free - i.e. you can change the region code to "0" so that it will play foreign DVDs. Go to videohelp.com to find the simple 5 step process you can follow using the included remote (no firmware update required). It will also play PAL-formatted DVDs as well as the U.S. NTSC standard. I can now play my DVDs from the U.K., as well as Australia.
Because it is so highly versatile, I highly recommend it if you are an avid DVD watcher who views both U.S. and foreign DVDs. (Note, as of the time of this review, Costco is selling the unit for under $200, including a bonus accessory pack which includes a carrying case and 2 headphones).
- This portable DVD was originally bought for a train trip and it worked great! We were in rooms not coach so the entire family was able to watch and the screen size was plenty large enough to see every thing clearly. What I especially liked was that the screen is still able to be seen from oblique angles. I was afraid that it would be like my laptop and be hard to see unless you are directly infront of it but that isn't the case at all.
The sound works well through the dual head phones and actually works surprisingly well through the speaker as well. We we able to hear the movies on the train through the speaker. Depending on the DVD sometimes it could actually get very loud.
Like the other reviewer I suggest checking out Costco to get this player, so that you can get the pack with a bag and two earphones for less that $200. The bag, I especially liked. It is a very good bag with plenty of storage.
- Our Mintek was unreliable right out of the box. The picture and sound were decent, it's size was a great convenience when traveling, but we had trouble getting it to play and eventually it just failed on us after a few weeks. And we hardly used it much. No damage, no dropping, no abuse, nothing but love and respect. It just up and quit on us and I will never buy a Mintek product again. Truly a grand waste of our money. I'm glad others have posted positive reviews - hope they're still happy. I wish you luck if you gamble on this item.
- It appears to work fine except possibly the AV output. It has a password in the setup that is not documented anywhere. When I tried to find out about these problems online and by phone - there was no answer (the phone mailbox is full and won't let you even leave a message). I would not recommend this product to anyone.
- I have bought 2 Mintek DVD players, and now, shame on me. The first one worked pretty well for a while and got a lot of use. It then started to get touchy. If it is bumped in the slightest, it thinks that the DVD door opens, and the DVD starts over again. This is terrible for travel or kids.
I bought another one, thinking that it was a good machine other than that, but it has acted up from the beginning. It actually won't play some discs (that will play on the first machine). Other discs just freeze and skip and are unwatchable (but, again, they play fine on other machines).
I'm very frustrated with both machines that I bought. I cannot have had the bad luck to have bought two lemons! Just beware when buying this product.
I gave 2 stars only because the sound and picture are good (when they work!!), otherwise I'd have given one star.

5 comments about Sony DVP-NS575P/S Progressive Scan DVD Player, Silver.
- Just like the majority of the reviews, mine died after a year of very little use. I doubt that it read 60 DVD's. It played everything I threw at it until it died. This player is ripe for a class action suit. This is worse than Sony's old "Error 13" problem. This is the last Sony product I will ever buy. The quality goes out before the name goes on. Welcome to the world of Communist China's electronics.
- Bought this DVD player almost two years ago. Have never had any problems with it. We use it to play DVD's that we rent and are very satisfied with the picture quality and performance.
- This player is complete trash. It lasted only three years before its main chip begins overheating and shutting down the player. Sony wants me to buy a new one???? Rubbish. I paid almost eighty USD us dollars at Best Buy for this trash and they expect me to pay them more? Whatever happend to good craftsmanship? Are they not have no pride in their products? Sony has lost me as a customer. I will not pay Sony anything anymore. Sony, you owe me.
- I have owned this DVD player for 4 years and most of the DVDs I played on this device worked great. No skipping or other annoyance. However, after 4 years, the device is starting to skip a little during movies, and most recently could not play 2 minutes worth of video without stopping the video/audio. While the video/audio is paused, it sounds like the device is trying to read the DVD. I played the same DVD on my computer, and there were no problems at all. So, time for a new device. This time it will not be a Sony.
- I used this solely as a cd player because it is very thin and takes up little space on top of the receiver. I didn't love it while it worked, it took too long to turn on and to eject a cd, sort of slow moving. But the sound was fine and really for the price it was ok. But after 3 1/2 years it just one day stopped turning on. I had to break the cover to get the cd out because it only ejects when it has electricity. So I will look for something new, not Sony, to see if something else holds up better.

5 comments about Refurbished RCA DRC8310N DVD Recorder/VCR Combination.
- Like so many other people, I was hooked on this by the awesome price. I bought it for under $80, and I figured a DVD recorder for that cheap wouldn't be top of the line, but I figured it to work.
The first one I got worked well for about a week. Then, the video went out. By the time I got a hold of the company, the two week return window for refurbished products had elapsed. But, it had a 30 day warranty through the company that refurbishes the machine, so I had to send it back.
The company took a long time sending the RMA, which you have to wait for to return the item. It was six weeks after I bought it, so I was afraid they wouldn't accept it, but they did. In fact, the upgraded it to the next model up when they returned it.
My happiness lasted for about two minutes. The new deck wouldn't turn on at all. It was basically a brick. I made another call to them, told them it was the second time, and I hope that there would be no problems. I was quite angry on the phone.
This time, the RMA came much sooner, and they even included a prepaid UPS label. The unit that came this time was tested, and so far it works fine. It's only been a week though.
Buying one of these RCA refurbished products seems to be a crapshoot. If it works, it is actually a nice machine. It is easy to use, gives you a good picture on the higher quality recordings, and fits in well with your other home theater equipment. I would give it 4 stars if I could be sure it worked. As it is, with all the problems and bad units, it gets one star.
Bottom Line: If you are willing to put in the work it may take to make the calls, return the unit, and stay on top of things until you get a good one, and accept you are probably buying a disposable machine, it is probably worth it. If you want something that you can be sure will work right out of the box, then go with a better machine.
- Can't believe the bad things I'm hearing about this combo.I've had one for about 8 months and have had no problems at all.
- RCA has joined the long list of corporations whose names used to mean quality -- Zenith comes to mind. This VCR-DVD combination joins its unworthy predecessor the DRC8295 (of which I bought two and promptly returned them) as fraudulent commodities. It is, unfortunately for me, just well-enough made to outlive the warranty so i'm stuck with the beast. Beware of all American and all Japanese (!!!) electronics produced in China. The Chinese seem to have adopted American, not Japanese, industrial philosophy and, since WalMart rules, bad drives out good every time. Old Enough to Remember, Mt. Desert, ME
- Bought this at WalMart about 2 years ago. Started off ok, then the problems started. You never know when you are going to have a problem. The number 1 problem is finding a disk that will work. The stupid system must like the first disk it sees. Every time I try any other disk than the 1st one I used, I spend an hour or two trying to get the system started. Right now I am watching the stupid pile of junk going thru it's menus in slow motion. This started about 4 hours ago. Nothing is easy on this system. I should have taken it back after it stopped working after a few weeks. I got it going again and went thru a few more weeks and it all started again. I will find a new and better one somewhere and then watch this thing burn in a very hot fire in my back yard. I can't wait until then.
- I bought this product brand new (not a refurbished model). Worked for about a year. Put in a DVD and it put up an error sign. Called the service, which said to unplug it and the computer would reset itself. NO such luck! VCR played a bit after the DVD, but error sign kept coming up, interface problem. Now it is completely dead, and I will open the case to hopefully dig out my VHS movie. At $149 dollars, not a good deal for only one year! If you buy this RCA, I strongly suggest getting it where you can purhase a powerful 3 year service warranty. For the one person who has gotten a good deal with this, it is the exception, and congratulations. I had mine about the same time, and out of the blue, kapoot!

- My 10 year old sister loves it! It's compact, cheap, and it plays ok. I think its perfect for kids/teens though I wouldn't recommend it if you'll use it for your home theater or something.
- i got one of these for $20 at walgreens. it is the worst piece of anything i have purchased ever. it does not play most dvds. the ones it does play tend to skip and freeze.
- You cant really go wrong with this little fella! For the price what do you expect? I got mine in wal-greens and it has been perfect in my bedroom. Its nothing fancy, nothing special but it plays dvds and thats really all you wanted for right! Great fro travel too - i hook it up to the hotel tv when i travel and i can watch my movies of choice rather than spending the money on the Pay Per Veiw movies - It plays DVDs what more do you want!!!
- Buyers BEWARE this player is trash. I am dropping my player in the trash.
What a waste of money!!!!! Won't play DVD and if you so happen to get it too play it skips and it will make you mad.
- I bought 2 of these two years ago. One for each of my kids rooms. They are great and work wonderfully. Very portable and small so don't take up alot of room. Has a remote too. The kids loved them as christmas presents.

5 comments about Magnavox HDMI DVD Player w/ HDMI Cable.
- I'm puzzled by the negative reviews. Once I got this player setup correctly for the 37" 1080p LCD TV it is hooked up to (via HDMI), the picture is great and the player works just fine. It is a very basic player, but it serves it's purpose very well in our bedroom and is a great value for the price I paid for it. No complaints that I can think of, other than maybe they should default the output to 16:9 instead of 4:3 since it is being sold as a HDMI player and I think most people buying it will have a widescreen TV. That might cut down on some of the disappointment of people who don't read the instructions.
- I recently bought this DVD player for $50 at Sams Club to go along with my brand new Vizio HDTV. I made the mistake of not reading the reviews before I got it and now I'm paying for it.
I returned home and hooked up the DVD player immediately. It had a stellar picture, don't get me wrong; however, much like another reviewer said, I needed to crank the volume on the TV just to match it up to the loudness that cable (or any other medium) provided.
That was the beginning of my problems. After about a week my son went to watch 3:10 To Yuma only to find out that the DVD player wouldn't turn on. I unplugged it, plugged it back in, held down the power button, tried using the remote to turn it on.. nothing worked. I finally broke down and called Magnavox as a last effort resort before I was going to return the player to Sams Club.
This is where it gets unbelievable. The customer service rep told me that this is a semi-common problem with this unit and that to fix it, I would need to follow these steps: unplug the unit, slowly push in the power button 5 times, and then plug the unit back in. Sure enough, it worked like a charm.
So this is what I get for $50: good picture, bad sound, and the need to perform some sort of witchcraft-esque maneuvers just to get my DVD player to turn on.
Not worth it.
- with this product, there is a learning curve...as with all dvd players, you have to adjust the settings for your liking...the price of this player and the quality I get from it is amazing...I have to agree with the reviewer who said he needed to set it up for best results...if you are the type of person that can not figure out how to set up electronic devises, THEN READ THE MANUAL!!!the hd tv I have only displays up to 1080i...but the quality isn't very good..that's because it is interlaced and I am used to pro-scan...so I receive a better picture at 720p...so play with the settings and you'll be happy at the price point..and as for running it directly through your tv...don't expect the sound from a tv channel...IT IS A DIFFERENT SIGNAL ALL TOGETHER!!!run it through your stereo for best results... for 50 bucks you can't beat this player...
- I got what I paid for. It was on sale in December 2007 and I picked it up for $30. I paid too much as it only lasted until April 11th, 2008. The video went out. Even before then the video quality was adequate at best but not as good as others I've compared it to, plus the sound was weak. Plus had virtually no features. Next time I won't buy my electronics at a discount store.
- Do not buy this product! It has been nothing but problems until it completely died after 6 months.
