4 comments about Dynex 5" Portable DVD Player.
  1. I was looking for a portable DVD player reasonably priced and of good quality. This unit was a great price and performs quite nicely. I looked at other units with larger screen sizes, but naturally the price would rise as did the size of the screen. The Dynex has a 5 in. screen, which is clear, crisp and sharp. One feature I needed was compatability with recordable DVDs, since I have many DVD -R discs that I had recorded on my DVD recorder. This unit plays back all formats with no problem. As far as the sound goes, it has 2 built in stereo speakers, but the sound is minimal. I was not expecting great sound from a portable DVD player, but was quite happy with the sound you get from the headphones, which is rich and full. The unit has 2 headphone jacks. I also noticed that the better quality the headphones are, the better the sound will be. I compared the sound from a lower quality set of phones to a much higher quality set and the difference in sound was quite obvious. But even in the lower quality phones, the sound was perfectly acceptable and quite nice, actually. So imagine the sound from a higher end set of headphones. The battery pack charged fully in less than 8 hours and as I write this, I am watching/listening to a DVD on the unit using the battery pack, and it is performing beautifully. The manual says to expect a 2 hour run on the battery. I intend to use the battery only when using it where unable to use the AC/DC adapter. The unit comes with a car adapter and an AC adapter as well as a set of A/V cables for connection to an external monitor. It also comes with a fully functional credit card size remote control, making it easy to access certain chapters on the disc, etc. The zoom feature is also neat. Overall, I rate this unit with 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone looking for great quality and performance at an affordable price.

  2. I boughted this unit on january eleven and i'm really happy with the quality of the video, sound and versatility of this unit. It's really fantastic is small, and come with car adapter and ac adaptor ready for 110v or 220v.i'm really impressed with the quality of this dvd for a very low price, and all functions that gave you for that low price like, use in home, use in car,use in anywhere that you want.i recommend this unit in a 99% for some one that are looking a portable dvd player for a low price.also can read all formats of dvd.the only format that not read is dvd-ram i have somes but i know that this format is exclusive of panasonic and some other brand.in conclusion don't let that the brand of this dvd don't let you buy it.this unit is made in china but looks pretty good and the most important play very good everything, and the remote control is cool for little and full of options.Hope you try it someday.

  3. Like you, I'm a techno geek who covets most of the grown-up toys here on Amazon. In fact, please feel free to send me any item on my wish list!

But as the price of my toys has become outrageous, I have begun to forego some features for quality. And I will pirchase an "off brand" if the warranty and user reviews are positive. So when I saw the Dynex for $119 on sale at Best Buy I jumped for joy!

Now without a doubt, this is a basic DVD player. But every disc (DVD, MP3 and CD-R) I've loaded played effortlessly on it. And it has inputs for my digital camera for an inprotu slide show.

It's not the flashiest player I've ever seen. In fact, its rounded edges remind me of Buck Rogers. The speakers are a little tinny (I use headphones), but the 5" screen is quite clear. There is a nice zoom feature for close-ups and you can zoom and rotate a JPEG image.

My only concer is the remote control unit. It is credit card size, and I hope it is replaceable when I lose it.

In summary, I really like this player and heartily recommend it.

    Postscript:

I loved the Dynex, but the 5" screen is just too small for my old eyes. So I exchanged it for a 7" Polaroid player. I will post my comments on my new toy soon.

  4. When I bought this DVD player, I was a little concerned about the screen size. But it makes up for that with a crisp, clear picture. It even delivers decent sound from its built-in speakers. However, if high-quality audio is a must, you'll want to invest in a good set of headphones. This DVD player also comes with a rechargeable battery, AV input and output jacks (AV cable included), an AC/DC adapter, and a DC car adapter. Plus, it can play most dvd formats. It can even play MP3s and CDs. Overall, I'd say that, for the price, it is a good DVD player that only the most demanding user could complain about.

  1. This player can play anything which is good; it even played DVD-RWs for a limited time but then didn't. I still have the receipt to the Apex AD-1500 which I purchased 03/20/02, so I guess if you get lucky it will work almost 3 years. It could have possibly pushed 4 to 5 if I only used it for my other region DVDs like I did in the beginning, but recently have been playing everything back to back in it. If you are going to use the Apex for multiregional than it's a good buy as long as you use your other player for everything else, just don't pay too much for it. I still think it's unreliable though.

  2. I've had two of these so far and encountered a number of others, and my experience has been mixed. Their performance is great, they play anything thrown at them and I love the hackability of it, however it seems Apex got hit by the bad capacitor fiasco that plagued computer peripheral makers for several years. Every single one of these units has started acting up eventually and on every one the problem has been a single failed capacitor in the power supply. If you open it up you'll likely see it bulged at the top and possibly leaking. Now this is about a 50 cent part and it's not hard to change *but* most customers will likely have to find a technician to replace it as it requires soldering. So in the end, great player for me since I can fix them myself, but I hesitate to recommend them to non-technical customers unless they've been refurbished already since in my experience this capacitor *will* fail.

  3. I bought mine 11/2001. Compared to some of my friend's dvd players that were purchased near the same price, it was great. The sound and picture quality were pretty good. Two small complaints - 1)The remote buttons pop off easily 2)The front of the disc tray (the panel)came off and with the help of a 2 year old got stuck inside the tray area. My DVD player died 1/2005. Not from my son; it would start freezing and skipping at the beggining and end of scenes.

  4. I picked up this item in mid 2002.

I have had almost no problems at all with this machine since i bought it to replace a Pioneer unit that was stolen from me. This unit from day 1 worked better than the unit it replaced at half the cost.

I have only had problems playing about 5 discs, and I play anywhere from 2 to 20 movies/anime/mp3's/cd's a week. The remote may be on the smaller side but well designed (except for the placement of the mute button) It can be a tad loud on the ejecting of the disc tray, but it's not loud enough to be a concern.

Easily one of the smartest purchases i've ever made.

  5. I purchased this DVD player in January 2002. I have never had a problem with it... it's still working great.

  1. I just purchased this gps /dvd unit from target and i have to say it is great. the large 5.6 inch LCD screen is sharp, and the DVD playback is excellent. this GPS unit has it all. I give it 5 stars and the price for all it will do, is far below Garmin or tom tom with a smaller screen and no dvd player which is great on long car trips.
it also plays CD's and JPEG picture Cd's.
I say buy it, comes with all the stuff you need even a nice black tote bag. the car mount system is top notch, with a large strong suction cup that holds it very secure.

  2. I agree with everything Robert Shoemaker said.
It is a fantastic unit that has more features than any other I have seen.

  3. My family and I just returned from a vacation trip to Boston and the Cape Cod area with only our MGX-0560 GPS to get us from place to place. I had pre-programmed most of the locations we wanted to visit and the suction cup mount made it a piece of cake to install in the rental car. After departing the Boston metro area, we decided to stop for lunch. As we wanted to try some of the local cuisine (seafood of course), we pulled up "Seafood Restaurant" on the GPS menu and picked a relatively close one at random. We were directed to a residential area with no restaurant in sight, so the Polaroid GPS failed its first real test because of outdated info. (Luckily, as the unit was steering us back to the main highway we found a very good seafood restaurant along the way, so it wasn't a completely wasted trip.) However, we did not attempt to use the restaurant location data after that. There were only a few instances of outdated map info that we observed (traffic circles that had been replaced by overpasses, for example) but other than providing a bit of confusion, it didn't really impact us significantly. The Polaroid GPS successfully got us from the Boston airport to Hyannis to Falmouth to Plymouth and back to Boston - and we never once looked at a map.

I love the huge screen and the voice prompts from the FM radio work very well, as does the DVD functionality. I am just a little concerned - OK A LOT concerned - about the availability of map and data updates for the Polaroid GPS units. The GPS FAQ at Polaroid's website showed availability of map updates in June 2007...then July 2007...then the proposed availability date info disappeared from the FAQ altogether. I called Polaroid's customer support and was told the map updates would be available in mid-August of 2007. Well, I'll believe it when I see it. It is only because of the update issue that I rate the Polaroid MGX-0560 a 4 instead of a 5.

UPDATE 08/01/2007: The backlight on my 2-month old MGX-0560 failed, rendering the unit unusuable. I have returned it and will not purchase another Polaroid GPS. Too bad, really, as I really liked - no, make that LOVED - the large screen and DVD.

  4. I would agree with the other reviews on amazon up until the unit breaks, And it will break! I am led to believe there are a few thousand customers waiting for there broken units to be replaced. The only problem I had with the gps unit while it was working was in chicago, the unit was too slow to process the streets and you ended up passing the street as the unit said to turn.
When the unit broke customer service was great "return it and in 5 to 7 days you will have a replacement" Well thats where it ended. It has been just short of 4 months and I'm still empty handed. I've called 8 to 10 times and they are now calling me with updates. Here is the typical update "we are still working on the issue but as of now we have no idea of what is going on and there is no way we can track anything that has or is being shipped." The last update I recieved at the end of august was that the shipment from overseas had been refused and sent back because of improper paperwork. I called today 9-14-07 and they still have no idea if they have stock, no idea if my replacement has been shipped, no idea how to find out any information at all. So Buyer Beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!
