  1. total piece of junk. It worked for a few months and then started to give the bad disk error.

Worst yet, too light to use as a boat anchor... so it is not even good enough to be used for that.

  2. The DVD player broke after one use. The DVD player reads no disc everytime i insert a disc. If you call customer service they will replace it with the SD 4000. Seems as if this was a common problem.

  3. I received this as a gift about 14 months ago and earlier this week I suddenly got the "No Disc" message everyone else seems to get. I searched every corner of the internet for a solution. I opened it up and unplugged things and replugged them (yes, I did the ribbon thing that worked for some people) but nothing fixed it, not even shaking it or hitting it. Because of this, I will never buy Toshiba. How about a recall???

  4. Ok, I barely watch DVDs at home, however it is always nice to have a DVD player to suite your entertainment needs every once in a while.

Please don't buy this one, you want something that will last forever and will not just break all of the sudden even if you don't use it. I used to think that Toshiba was that leader brand in "home entertainment" systems but not anymore. This DVD player was a tease, it looked perfect, simple and user friendly, but just the fact that so many people are having the same issue is an offense to all customers. One DVD player braking is understandable but when you browse in Google or just in this site and find out that many people are going through the same hassle, it says that quality control did not do their job.

I will stay loyal to other brands such as Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp or LG as a last resource.

Sorry if I am harsh but enough is enough.

  5. I have owned this player for almost 2 years and have been very satisfied. Many other reviewers seem to have had a ton of problems. This player has played everything I have thrown in it, including downloaded .AVI files and PAL formatted DVDs from Europe. My DiVx DVDs play flawlessly. By reading these reviews, I am wondering if I got the only good one Toshiba made. Either way, I love this thing!

  1. I purchased a DV4001 for a second entertainment system because it had the features I wanted and because I expected it to match the quality of my DV4300 I already had. So far, this player has worked great. It does have an HDMI output, but personally, using this with my Panasonic TC-32LX600, I find that the aspect ratios the unit seems to force the TV into don't always match what should be. In my case, using either the component video out or the S-Video offered up a system that works a lot better. But I am told that HDMI has it's quirks, especially if the TV and DVD player are from different manufacturers and of a slightly different generation.
As for picture quailty, this thing is excellent. I toyed with the idea of just buying some unit from a local retailer, but this unit blows all those under $400 DVD players away. Also, the insides are a LOT more robust. For kicks, I opened the unit up to find that it actually has a rather beefy power supply and the circuit boards do not look like something made out of cheap cardboard as found in other, lesser players. When you pick up this DVD player, the first thing you will notice is that it is 2 - 3 times heavier then what you normally find in the discount and department stores. I bought my first Marantz DVD player at a hi-fi shop. They also used these players for music CD players. I can attest to the fact that these DVD players are a definite upgrade from the average CD player. The D/A converters are of very high quality for a unit in this price range. About the only bad thing I could say about this model is that it is slower to initally read a DVD and that it takes it's time to stop and open the transport when you want to remove a disc. Some units will do this in a flash. This unit takes several seconds to compile it's self and finally open up and let you remove the disc. But, this is really a nit. The reason you buy one of these is to watch a DVD or listen to a CD. This unit works great for it's intended purpose and won't break the bank,

  1. Just like the majority of the reviews, mine died after a year of very little use. I doubt that it read 60 DVD's. It played everything I threw at it until it died. This player is ripe for a class action suit. This is worse than Sony's old "Error 13" problem. This is the last Sony product I will ever buy. The quality goes out before the name goes on. Welcome to the world of Communist China's electronics.

  2. Bought this DVD player almost two years ago. Have never had any problems with it. We use it to play DVD's that we rent and are very satisfied with the picture quality and performance.

  3. This player is complete trash. It lasted only three years before its main chip begins overheating and shutting down the player. Sony wants me to buy a new one???? Rubbish. I paid almost eighty USD us dollars at Best Buy for this trash and they expect me to pay them more? Whatever happend to good craftsmanship? Are they not have no pride in their products? Sony has lost me as a customer. I will not pay Sony anything anymore. Sony, you owe me.

  4. I have owned this DVD player for 4 years and most of the DVDs I played on this device worked great. No skipping or other annoyance. However, after 4 years, the device is starting to skip a little during movies, and most recently could not play 2 minutes worth of video without stopping the video/audio. While the video/audio is paused, it sounds like the device is trying to read the DVD. I played the same DVD on my computer, and there were no problems at all. So, time for a new device. This time it will not be a Sony.

  5. I used this solely as a cd player because it is very thin and takes up little space on top of the receiver. I didn't love it while it worked, it took too long to turn on and to eject a cd, sort of slow moving. But the sound was fine and really for the price it was ok. But after 3 1/2 years it just one day stopped turning on. I had to break the cover to get the cd out because it only ejects when it has electricity. So I will look for something new, not Sony, to see if something else holds up better.

  1. I did a lot of research trying to find the best and biggest player for the best price. This player has a great picture, great sound and is a steal for the price. Now I know a lot of people want a contrast button, which this does not have. But you can go into the menu and adjust the brightness and contrast there, so it's not even an issue. The swivel screen was not something I was looking for, but it is a great feature. Overall, this is a great player at a great price!

  1. My 10 year old sister loves it! It's compact, cheap, and it plays ok. I think its perfect for kids/teens though I wouldn't recommend it if you'll use it for your home theater or something.

  2. i got one of these for $20 at walgreens. it is the worst piece of anything i have purchased ever. it does not play most dvds. the ones it does play tend to skip and freeze.

  3. You cant really go wrong with this little fella! For the price what do you expect? I got mine in wal-greens and it has been perfect in my bedroom. Its nothing fancy, nothing special but it plays dvds and thats really all you wanted for right! Great fro travel too - i hook it up to the hotel tv when i travel and i can watch my movies of choice rather than spending the money on the Pay Per Veiw movies - It plays DVDs what more do you want!!!

  4. Buyers BEWARE this player is trash. I am dropping my player in the trash.
What a waste of money!!!!! Won't play DVD and if you so happen to get it too play it skips and it will make you mad.

  5. I bought 2 of these two years ago. One for each of my kids rooms. They are great and work wonderfully. Very portable and small so don't take up alot of room. Has a remote too. The kids loved them as christmas presents.

  1. Like so many other people, I was hooked on this by the awesome price. I bought it for under $80, and I figured a DVD recorder for that cheap wouldn't be top of the line, but I figured it to work.

The first one I got worked well for about a week. Then, the video went out. By the time I got a hold of the company, the two week return window for refurbished products had elapsed. But, it had a 30 day warranty through the company that refurbishes the machine, so I had to send it back.

The company took a long time sending the RMA, which you have to wait for to return the item. It was six weeks after I bought it, so I was afraid they wouldn't accept it, but they did. In fact, the upgraded it to the next model up when they returned it.

My happiness lasted for about two minutes. The new deck wouldn't turn on at all. It was basically a brick. I made another call to them, told them it was the second time, and I hope that there would be no problems. I was quite angry on the phone.

This time, the RMA came much sooner, and they even included a prepaid UPS label. The unit that came this time was tested, and so far it works fine. It's only been a week though.

Buying one of these RCA refurbished products seems to be a crapshoot. If it works, it is actually a nice machine. It is easy to use, gives you a good picture on the higher quality recordings, and fits in well with your other home theater equipment. I would give it 4 stars if I could be sure it worked. As it is, with all the problems and bad units, it gets one star.

Bottom Line: If you are willing to put in the work it may take to make the calls, return the unit, and stay on top of things until you get a good one, and accept you are probably buying a disposable machine, it is probably worth it. If you want something that you can be sure will work right out of the box, then go with a better machine.

  2. Can't believe the bad things I'm hearing about this combo.I've had one for about 8 months and have had no problems at all.

  3. RCA has joined the long list of corporations whose names used to mean quality -- Zenith comes to mind. This VCR-DVD combination joins its unworthy predecessor the DRC8295 (of which I bought two and promptly returned them) as fraudulent commodities. It is, unfortunately for me, just well-enough made to outlive the warranty so i'm stuck with the beast. Beware of all American and all Japanese (!!!) electronics produced in China. The Chinese seem to have adopted American, not Japanese, industrial philosophy and, since WalMart rules, bad drives out good every time. Old Enough to Remember, Mt. Desert, ME

  4. Bought this at WalMart about 2 years ago. Started off ok, then the problems started. You never know when you are going to have a problem. The number 1 problem is finding a disk that will work. The stupid system must like the first disk it sees. Every time I try any other disk than the 1st one I used, I spend an hour or two trying to get the system started. Right now I am watching the stupid pile of junk going thru it's menus in slow motion. This started about 4 hours ago. Nothing is easy on this system. I should have taken it back after it stopped working after a few weeks. I got it going again and went thru a few more weeks and it all started again. I will find a new and better one somewhere and then watch this thing burn in a very hot fire in my back yard. I can't wait until then.

  5. I bought this product brand new (not a refurbished model). Worked for about a year. Put in a DVD and it put up an error sign. Called the service, which said to unplug it and the computer would reset itself. NO such luck! VCR played a bit after the DVD, but error sign kept coming up, interface problem. Now it is completely dead, and I will open the case to hopefully dig out my VHS movie. At $149 dollars, not a good deal for only one year! If you buy this RCA, I strongly suggest getting it where you can purhase a powerful 3 year service warranty. For the one person who has gotten a good deal with this, it is the exception, and congratulations. I had mine about the same time, and out of the blue, kapoot!

  1. I purchased this several months ago from Amazon after reading all the reviews -- including the ones that complained of pixellation and out-of-box failure. So I ordered this inexpensive unit with some reserve, and saved the box for months, thinking I might have to send it back.

But no. What I've found instead is that it reliably produces a stunningly-sharp, hi-def picture, and sends lovely, pure, unadulterated sound through to my surround receiver (Yamaha HTR-5650). I've got it hooked to a Toshiba 42" widescreen HD-ready RPTV (42H83), with Monster component video cables, and I feed it a fairly fatty diet of 3-4 DVDs every week. Not a pixel or a plip to be seen.

Of course, DVDs of movies made pre-HD-era won't look as good. Even this super-machine can't remove the grain from older discs.

The remote is a bit cheesy, not worthy of the sleek player, and the buttons can be inscrutable in the dim light of a home-theatre room. But that's a small quibble, considering the great value of this machine.

I purchased this when my MUCH-more-expensive Sony 5-disc DVD player died after just 14 months. The Sony will still play CDs, but I use it only as a "jukebox" when hosting dinner parties. When I want to play a single CD or CD-R, whether 80s pop, Linken Park, Joni Mitchell, a Mozart aria, or carpet-rumbling classical pipe-organ music, this Toshiba unit leaves my Sony whimpering in tail-dragging shame.

This is an amazing value, an absolute must-buy. Already have a DVD player in your family room? Buy this for your bedroom...and switch them when you get the chance.

  2. (...) The price, toshiba brand name, and stylish design atrracted me to it. I have never had any problems with it -- owning it now for a full year. Nice picture, small and easy to use controller, and plays both regular dvds and my 'burned' dvds (dvd-r). If you can find a good deal on this player, go for it!

  3. I have had this player for a little over a year. I thought it was a great buy due to some good reviews and that it played many different "types" of movies. Well, low and behold, what I paid for is what I received. It pauses on many of my movies and shuts down. Right now, its not playing ANY of my movies. Not a good sign. I'm going to complain to amazon and the company who sold it through them. Buyer beware

  4. The first one we bought was a real deal for the features, but it frequently wouldn't work--it would lock up. We'd have to unplug it, wait a few minutes, and plug it back in before it would play. Toshiba was apparently aware of the glitch. We returned it, got a replacement, and the replacement works great. Be sure you save the box until you're sure you won't need to return it!

  5. Got a good deal on this dvd player. Used this in the bedroom. Great for your bedroom TV setup and/or guest room. Expecting to watch full surround sound, with high def movie ... wouldn't be able to compete with top of line dvd players, but its good enough to watch "Friends" series in bed on the weekends.

  1. A few weeks after I bought it the open button would get stuck so the door wouldn't stay down. It's a reoccurring problem, but so far I've been able to unstick it enough for the door to close... but it's not easy.

The speakers just died on it after it was only 5 months old. I do not play it loud, I don't abuse it, & I don't even use it often. AMF, I take good care of my gadgets. The sound from the earphone jack also died at the same time. So it means the audio amp chip inside is blown. Fortunately, I had a high-impedance set of earbuds with a volume control built in the line lying around. I was able to plug it in the audio out in the back of the player to get sound from there.

Unfortunately the battery pack covers those output jacks when one is going portable. So the only way I could get sound now, is without the battery.

  2. When I purchased the DVD player it was MUCH cheaper than any other product(although prices have come down since then). It works with the battery, in your car lighter, and you can plug it into the wall. I purchased it for a plane trip with my 3 year old but it has worked well and he has yet to break it(and he is very good at breaking things)

  3. I've bought three of these now. First I got the MDP-5861, which is the widescreen version. It lasted a year, which is not bad considering my then-three-year-old was its biggest user. The screen broke but it still works with an external monitor.

I bought another for a friend, and it still works, then I bought the 4:3 (standard screen) 5860 as a replacement.

Treat it gently and with a bit of luck it should last a few years. It's not bad for the price.

  4. I have drug this thing over half the world in the 2 months that I have owned it (Germany, Iraq, Texas) and have had no problems. I take it to the gym and put it on the treadmill for longer runs. The sound quality is not good on the speakers, but I use headphones anyway. The screen does not fold out all the way back, but enough that it can set on the magazine rack of most treadmills/bikes/elliptical machines. Battery life is short--1 movie only--and charger takes only 110 power. Buy the extended life battery although it doubles the cost of the machine.

  5. I've had the Mintek MDP-5860 for exactly one year now and i have gotten my money's worth. I'll list the positives and negatives of this unit.

    Positives:

The 5" screen has great picture sharpness, color and contrast
    (which is adjustible)

The adjustable screen (forward & back) is handy when sitting or lying.

The zoom feature is handy for those who have troble viewing letterbox films on this 5" screen.

This little player can play almost every cd/dvd format.

The small size fits almost anywhere for easy travel.

The virtual suround is fantastic and clear.

    Negatives:

The battery life is very short (Roughly 2 hrs.)

The external inputs or on the rear of the player, making it impossible to connect devices during travel.

The wireless remote runs on a lithum battery for longer life, but can be hard to replace.

All in all, i believe you get what you pay for, and you get exactly that in the Mintek MDP-5860. If you comapare this player to other 5" portables out there will you find better? Probably, but not for the price. What you get is a nice little player with some nice bells and wistles for a bargin price.

  1. Not just one, but two of Polaroids portable DVD players were purchased less than a year ago. Both quit spinning the DVD in the 13th month within a few days of each other. What do you do with a working LCD screen and no player? Nothing. It's crap. Don't buy Polaroid!!!
