- I have other dvd players, Philips both, excellents machines, however the last year I wanted to buy me a new Sony home teather for my new Sony Trinitron, so I need to buy a SONY DVD player for that reason I bought this player, and let me tell you that it is a really nice player, and the price it is ok, so If you need a simple but worthy DVD player, and you are not able to spend a lot of money, try this one, it is a good choise
- This is the most frustrating-to-use DVD player I've ever owned or operated. It's slow to load DVDs, slow to respond to commands (either from the remote or directly pushing buttons on the player itself), and most annoyingly, it has extremely restrictive DRM. What does this mean? For starters, it means it won't play any burned DVD, especially if those disks are not restricted to the player's region code. So, if I make a DVD of my diving trip or wedding, this player will refuse to play it. This player also refuses to let you skip previews and the like on a DVD, usually telling you that "operation is prohibited by disc." I can play the same disk in another player, however, and skip ahead all I want.
Basically Sony put a lot of restrictions on what disks this player will play, and how it will play them, all to the disadvantage and annoyance of the consumer. What's worse, the player often refuses to play rental disks--from Netflix or Blockbuster, for example--or, when it does play them, has problems like skipping or hanging on certain scenes. These same disks play perfectly fine on two other DVD players I have.
I won't buy a Sony product again.
- Played with some idiosyncratic tendencies for one year. Worked around it's temprament until the "CANNOT PLAY" message displayed and it never played another DVD after that.
- This DVD player plays all sorts of DVD's and that is the best part. It is a little slow in turning on and loading. Other than that no complaints.
- DO NOT WASTER YOUR MONEY ON THIS MACHINE....LOADING LOADING LOADING IS ALL IT SAYS AFTER ONE YEAR OF LIGHT USE.....ALSO ANOTHER 5 DISC CD/DVD PLAYER DOES THE SAME FROM SONY....YES SONY THE ONE AND ONLY "NOT TOO BUY"

- The power switch does not turn the unit off. Sound is like whispering on the high level, both on the speakerphone and the earphones. Colored lines appear on the screen periodically. Freezes every now and then.
Customer support was not helpful at all. They suggested turning the unit off for 20 minutes and calling them back if it does not fix all problems, which of course it did not.
I was lucky enough that a place I ordered it from provides full refund.
- this was the best purchase i have ever made. The seller was excellent. I had previously purchased an item on ebay and will never buy there again. Had an awful experience. Took me over amonth to get my product. The service here was excellent and the product which i really haven't used much yet seem to be working well and my grandkids love it. Can't wait to see how well it works on vacation next week. All i can say is AMAZON keep up the good work.
- I don't understand how these ever made it to market. They are cheaply made in China and they come with virtually NO SOUND. I am not kidding you. I thought it was a good deal since it came with a carrying case but I sure was wrong.
The only good review you will find on these units is from the poor sellers who bought a bunch of them and are trying to sell them as fast as they can before the word gets out that these players are defective !!!
And try to get Protron's customer service to help you! That is a nightmare in itself!
- This DVD player has been perfect for what I wanted -- an inexpensive, 2-screen system for the car. For the actual player, I used my old case to hang on the back seat, because the case that comes with it I couldn't figure out a way to mount it so I didn't have to take it down to change DVDs. For the second screen the included case is fine. The cord is nice and long, too, which had been a problem with my old player. It doesn't play those Doritos-smudged DVDs quite as well as my home player, but picture and sound quality is good as long as you keep your DVDs clean.
- This is the worst online purchasing experience I've ever had. I bought this unit online, paid for expediting delivery, and it came in late, which I didn't complain about. The unit worked only ONCE, and the power never turns on any more. Called the customer service, and they said I should call whom I purchased it from. I was like a ball being kicked around with no help. Finally SpectonIQ agreed to pick up my unit at their cost and send me a new one. Three weeks has passed, and they still haven't sent UPS to pick up this trash. I'm going to file complaint to BBB. Hope they send me a good replacement and go out of business.

- Having trouble with tracking on VCR. Cannot find a way to adjust it, and would cost too much to repair.
- very easy to set up and works well. The buttons on the remote are easy to find and use
- My Mom has one of these. I have spent the last couple of days trying to get it to play different burned DVDs (exact copies). I've tried 3 different types of media (+R -R and -RW) from 4 different manufacturers, burned on two different PCs and it won't play any of them. The manual says these formats are all supported.
If you like a blue screen that says "Disk Error", this is the machine for you.
- This is a steal!! Works great and is very easy to use. You're able to record a program on VHS and watch a DVD at the same time. I bought one and ended up buying two more. I would recommend this unit to anyone. Everything in video/audio is changing so quickly at the moment....if you need a combo unit, don't spend any more $ than this! One minor complaint. There isn't a time/channel/counter display on the front of the unit. Oh well, I got over it!

- We have a 37" 720p (and 1080i) LCD tv. We bought this upscaling DVD player to ride out the format wars. The picture is incredible. I can definitely tell the difference between a Blue Ray disc and an up-scaled DVD, but honestly, the difference is probably slight for all but the largest screens. Now that it looks like Blue Ray will be the winner, we will keep our eye out for a nice Blue Ray player to complement the Oppo.
- "These are the days of miracles and wonder" wrote Paul Simon.
I use the Oppo machine in a system that (apart from the Oppo) would have to be classified as audiophile caliber. The speakers are Martin Logan electrostats. (For normal folks, let's just say they are VERY revealing of detail most speakers muffle. Very critical of anything wrong, therefore.)
The machine it replaced died, and I needed something to feed digital data to my D to A converter. So basically I'm using it as a transport. But the stunning thing is that my system IMPROVED when I put the Oppo in, instead of the transport I'd used for years, which (in its time) was considered state of the art.
It seems like we are offered more and more performance from less and less expensive toys. You'd have had to pay hundreds of dollars more to touch this performance a decade ago: to me the miracle is how much the Oppo achieves at an absurdly inexpensive price.
Someone else said something about it being "cheaply built." OK, but I go by actual performance.
In my system, it's making me toe-tappin' happy.
- Amazing! This appliance is simply amazing and it's backed by a sound company from which i have received nothing but top notch, lightning-fast customer support from. About 6 months after receiving the player, the remote took a vacation. I emailed the oppo support folks who responded back within a couple hours and posted a walk-through on how to reset the remote and resync it with the player. This worked for a while but when it stopped again, i emailed them once more at which point they asked for my home shipping address. 4 days later i had a new remote in the mail which has worked great ever since. I could only dream of getting this level of support from other companies.
The player itself is wonderful. In a nutshell, it plays -anything- i throw at it. DVDA, SACD, whatever movie files i find on my computer and throw at it... you name it. I even threw a divx file at it on a usb thumb drive and it ate it alive. Played great! The menus are great, the 6 channel direct sound from sacds is just phenomenal. I see allot of folks aren't crazy about the quality of the tray. Well, okay... i admit, you can't stand on it to change a light bulb but it's a cd tray, not a stepladder. I don't see the problem unless you load your dvd's weigh a couple of pounds each.
Bottom line... it's a great player and you can't beat the price for this level of features. The cloth case they send it in is impressive as well. I don't see how anyone can be displeased over this appliance.
- This by far is the best DVD player I have ever owned. I love the intelligent up-conversion, its simple look at the fact that I can control just about every facet of the player.
It is amazing they could do all this for so little money. This is one of those devices that if you buy it, you will love it, but you will never be able to get your friends to buy it. Because it does not have the name recognition of many other players, I have noticed friends reluctant to even consider it.
If you are having trouble finding it, call the company direct. Their customer service is excellent.
- I've had OPDV971H HD for 2 years in conjunction with Sony Bravia LCD, worked very nicely. Now that I got a better quality Pioneer Plazma it is abvious that the player doesn't produce good picture quality. will be buying something new.

- This player has come down in price almost 50% since I bought it 1 year ago. It has superb picture quality and sound quality when playing either CDs or DVDs. The features are unmatched in this price range and all work really well. Occasionally (not on all DVDs) I have noticed it hesitate in the middle of moving from one chapter to the next but I have also seen this problem on most DVD players my friends have - some of those players are a lot more expensive than this one too. Navigation is easy either with the remote or the on-unit controls. Both give you quick access to the features you want. It will auto-power off if you leave the tray open and always shuts the tray when it turns off. The drive inside this thing is ultra-quiet. The remote is probably one of the easiest to use - I'm almost sad to be replacing it and the other 4 I have with a universal learning remote. I really bought this unit for its assortment of compatibility with DVD/VCD/CD, MP3, CD-R, DVD-R, and CD-RW as well as the impressive stats for the 54MHz video DAC, 192kHz/24-bit audio converter, optical and coaxial digital audio outputs with Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel pass-through, component-video, composite-video, and S-Video terminals. All of which live up to their claims. Unfortunately, Macrovision protection prevented me from copying DVDs to video tape for playing on my kids TV/VCR combo - oh well.
So the only real disappointment is the MP3 playback. The manual comes with a detailed explanation of the limitations of the MP3 playback. MP3 CDs must be 650MB, use DOS-style 8.3 names and files cannot be listed in sub-directories. It also does not extract ID3 tags so you are limited to the file name for determining what MP3 is being selected. You can also only have up to 254 MP3 files on any CD you put in the Toshiba 3750. I was successfully able to compile an MP3 CD that met all of these criteria including the 128-kbit 44.1kHz sample rate and the MP3 playback was horrible. Pops and crackles and a very dull tone made the MP3 feature useless to me. So, instead I have a Creative Nomad now. Still highly recommended for DVDs - hopefully my next DVD/MP3 CD player will be better.
- We bought this DVD a year ago, and it's absolutely not worth what we paid for it. The DVD picture and sound are Ok, but this is the case with most DVDs. Now for the fun part: the remote is not designed to be used - there are rows of buttons, similar in size, and not very conveniently placed, so if you want to fast forward, pause etc. without looking at remote - forget it. It does not play SVCDs. I've gladly replaced Toshiba's remote with the universal, never to touch it again. But i can't do anything with mp3 playback - it totally lacks features: you can't program, you can't go directly to a certain track, you can't fast fast forward, it doesn' show titles etc. Finally, it comes with a disclaymer about what types of mp3s it is supposed to play. Well, it doesn't play even those, and it comes down to the fact that it won't play most of my mp3s at all. So, if mp3 is even slightly important to you, you will be better off with something else
- You should realize initially that progressive scan dvd players will have a better picture, even if you don't own a HDTV. So the picture and audio quality were a nice improvement when I first got this player...and at a great price. However, it does not age well at all. I've had it a little over the year, and the freezes when it switches layers (many movies use 2 layers of the DVD disk) are becoming more pronouced. It is becoming more frequent that you cannot see the dot or highlight that lets you know what you are selecting (you can select, but it becomes a guessing game) until you power down, eject the disk, and start all over again. Finally, it is starting to completely freeze...and I mean completely (you can't even power down from the front buttons, you have to pull the cord at the back). Don't waste your money.
- I didn't buy this DVD player to listen to MP3s or CDs, I bought it strictly to watch DVDs in 480p with Dolby Digital 5.1. For the price, this is an excellent progressive-scan DVD player. However, it does have the chroma bug, which most people won't even notice.
The unit has composite, S-Video, and Y/Cr/Cb component outputs. You need component video to display in progressive scan, as well as a TV that outputs in 480p, such as an HDTV. Truthfully, progressive scan makes very little difference on a standard 480i (interlaced) TV. Audio outputs are composite, optical, and digital coax (bitstream). The latter two are required for Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS. I am not overly concerned with features or the remote; if it works, I'm happy. Notably on the remote control, there is a button that allows the user to toggle between interlaced and progressive scan to check the difference. In some cases, interlaced looks better on older source material, since seeing interlaced source material doubled to progressive often shows you all the junk that was previously hidden. The A/V quality is top-notch, with 54 Mhz video decoding and 192 Khz audio decoding. The player itself is relatively artifact-free. Overall, this is an excellent player, especially considering I got it new ... on sale. However, for best-in-class single disc progressive scan, 54 Mhz/192 Khz, the Panasonic RP-82 appears to be the DVD player of choice.
- You can not go wrong with this very nice DVD player. It has everything you could want except for DVD-Audio, which is okay since the selection of them is so limited. By the time the selection is better, this DVD player will be old and in need of replacement anyway. This player has an excellent picture, good sound, and a nice menu and button layout. The remote is good. For the money, this player is a winner!

- I bought and hooked this player up yesterday to my HDTV and it works great! I had read reviews that it was slow to respond to commands before buying, but it works like a champ and my standard movies look absolutely outstanding!
Toshiba did an excellent job on the up-converting algorithms here. The unit works like my old DVD player and I don't have to buy all new Blu-Ray discs.
Response to commands is immediate and I did not experience any delay.
Highly recommended.
