5 comments about Audiovox D7000XP 7-Inch Portable DVD Player with Swivel Screen and Digital Picture Frame Software.
- I just received this unit after waiting 8 weeks on back order. So far it does everything I had hoped for. It doesnt say it in the spec's but I just put in a dvd-r data disk that I made to back up my photos and it started playing a slide show of them. Looks like a great way to show photos to friends. It does the same thing when I connected a 4 gig thumb drive to it with photos on it.
- First, the product description is incorrect. The product does not come with a "Car Headrest Mounting Bag and carrying case." There is a headrest mounting *strap* (not bag) and a separate carrying case. On the bright side, the lack of bag makes it easier to change DVDs while mounted. I'm also unsure what "complete car cabling with car adapter" means. The unit comes with a cigarette lighter plug-in (car adapter) for auto use. Any other "car cabling" that would make it "complete" is a mystery to me.
The Good:
The price. This is the least expensive DVD with swivel screen and included battery that I've been able to find. The product does play DVDs, music, and photos as advertised. The carrying bag is cheap, but appreciated. Why don't more manufacturers include at least this simple accessory? I haven't tested the battery life yet but if it truly lasts 4 hours that will be an excellent feature.
The Bad:
The battery is external. I know that most are external, but the product description should be upfront about this. When playing DVD's at low volume you can hear the DVD spinning noise. Resolution for viewing pictures is poor, and loading time is poor (with a card right out of a 6 MP camera). If you like to wait and hear a buzz while your photo loads, this is your photo viewer. I assume if I resized the photos they would load more quickly. Why would I want to do that? The remote is a nice feature for auto use, but it would be nice if a "power standby" (off) feature could be activated from the remote (other players do this). While you can navigate a DVD using the remote you need to reach over to turn the power off when you are done. You cannot turn it off using the remote. This is a pain for a parent controlling the DVD player from the front seat. The manual is poorly written, but what one isn't these days?
Overview:
You may wonder why I'm giving it 3 stars even with so many complaints. I was looking for an inexpensive DVD player that had a swivel screen, an included battery, and that could be mounted on a headrest in a car. This was one of the few options available that had all of these features--although via a headrest strap rather than a bag. I have only owned the product two days and cannot comment on its durability.
- Yes, it does have digital picture frame software, but the screen resolution and display quality are really poor. If grainy, offhue display are okay (and for kids to watch in the car is what I'll use this for), then this unit may be acceptable. But if you want to show off decent photos, look elsewhere.
- Audiovox does not supply the cable you need to connect your portable DVD player to a television set. This means you have to buy, separately, a male-to-male RCA cable just to watch a DVD on this player on TV.
- This DVD player did not live up to expectations. I would not play video Cd's but most other portable DVD units will. The picture is really poor. Its has some cool features but not enough to offset the negative issues. I am going to give it away at a fundraiser because I do not want it.

5 comments about Samsung DVD-VR335 DVD Recorder.
- I had my doudts if the hd up function actually work, but to my suprise it takes a standard dvd makes it appear to be hd. The only thing I notice that I don't care for are TV show played through the unit, the picture size shrinks. The same thing happens with TV recordings. I may have a setting incorrect, I'll contact samsung.
- This recorder has many excellent features as described above, but if you want to have the up-converting to 720p or 1080i feature ALONG WITH 5.1 AUDIO then an annoying in-your-face error message saying "HDMI Audio not supported" pops up in the center of the screen for several seconds. It can also pop up in the middle of a movie at the layer change. The only way to get rid of this message is to switch to 2.0 PCM audio and lose your 5.1 surround or not use the HDMI output and stay at 480p.
What's so frustrating is that the unit WILL supply 5.1 audio out of one of its other jacks along with the HDMI video - it just bugs you constantly with this stupid message.
Another smaller annoyance is if you have a DVD that uses different angles then the word "Angle" appears onscreen with no way to remove it.
I have read online that Samsung issued a firmware fix for one of its other units to cancel all on-screen messages (that you have to reset whenever you re-start the unit) but they went ahead and included the message in the VR335 anyway!
Since upconverting was one of the major reasons for choosing the DVD-VR335, I am seriously considering returning it.
- Easy to set up & works great. The remote is a bit confusing at first. Easy one-touch recording to DVD.
- I'vw owned a -335 for about 2 months now, and really like it. it features some nice options for the recordings that it makes, like the ability to "split" one show into two (yes, you get ot choose WHERE the split happens).
the only two disappointments that I've founds are (1) it will only record on the free space at the END of the disc. if you have 3 shows on a disc, and erase the first 2 (on an RW disc), you still can't record on the newly freed space. only when you erase the last show on the disc can it recognize the space at the start of disc. in fairness, the manual warned me of this, so it is no suprise. just REALLY inconvinient, it turns out.
and (2), there doesn't seem to be any way to disable automatic time-syncing w/ cable. since the gov't decided to move DST this year, that was quite annoying for a few weeks. the manual suggests nothing for this, but I've gotten reasonable results from having it sync to a non-station. clumsy, but not a deal-killer.
all-in-all, I can happily recommend this unit.
- It works, I'll give the designers that. But it's one of the most frustrating pieces of gear I've ever bought...maybe the MOST frustrating for a unit that works.
The remote is impossible! It's made up of tiny buttons that require an inordinate amount of pressure to activate, and the remote has to be aimed pretty much straight at the unit to work. With so many excellent remote controls to inspire and educate the designers (such as the TiVo remote) why does anyone still design a remote that's so hard to use?
The basic operations of recording a DVD have many steps and are almost totally non-intuitive. Everything has to be "just so" in order to do something as simple as, say, retitling a recording or finalizing a disc. Even the "one-step" controls don't work intuitively when I try to do something as simple as recording from the built-in VHS deck to the DVD.
I can not imagine that Kun-Hee Lee (the Chairman and CEO of Samsung) has ever tried to operate this piece of gear. If he had, he would have fired his engineers, right after tossing this unit into the Han River.
I really hate this unit and regret buying it and look forward eagerly to the day when it dies and I can replace it. But I give the unit two stars because it does work...if you can figure it out (keep the manual handy) and get your fingers around that godawful remote.

2 comments about Toshiba SDK770 TOSHIBA MULTI ZONE DVD PLAYER.
- This is the third DVD player I owned. I like it because: 1. it looks slim; 2. it is quiet when it plays; 3. it can easily be cracked as all region DVD player. I bought with only $40. Good price.
- This DVD player does not remember where it was on a DVD after it powers down. So what, you ask? Well, it turns itself off automatically 25 minutes after you hit "stop." If you are like me and watch documetaries for an hour each night and want to pick it up where you left off, better have a pencil and paper handy. Leaving the power on seems cheaper than an automatic shut-off, but its not an option - I scoured the manual and the Toshiba site. Guess some tree huggers work at Toshiba.

5 comments about Sony DVP-NS715P Progressive-Scan DVD Player.
- This player is one of the best DVD players out there for the price. Not only does it feature options that high end players have: such as progressive scan and multi-format playback, but at this price it's a STEAL!
That being said, there is one thing that SONY should have added to this DVD player: the ability to read ID3 tags. Although the player allows you to navigate through an on-screen menu to the song you want, it only displays the title that you give your file on-screen. It does not display the info from the ID tags such as genre, track numbers and artist. However, the player does have the ability to scroll the file name of your song on its front display. By the way, for those of you who are having problems with playing CD-Rs with MP3 on them, be sure to burn the CD as an ISO 9660 format, level 1 or level 2 or joliet. So far all the media i've placed in the player worked flawlessly. I've searched the internet and found that Amazon and [their partners] have the lowest price for this player.
- I bought this unit but returned it after two days. It was a very good unit for watching DVDs and if that's all you'll use it for then you'll be happy. But the unit bills itself as a MP3 player also. Well, it does, in fact, play MP3s but, only in alphabetical order of file name. No random order. Not even in the order the files are burned onto the CD. Imagine burning a CD with 8-10 hours of your favorite music and then having to listen to them only in alphabetical order, the same song by two different artists always played back-to-back. Sonys answer to this problem? Their manual suggests renaming all your files so they are alphabetically in the order you want them to play. Seems like a bad joke to me. In the past I've prefered to buy only Sony equipment. I have a Sony TV, DVD, VCR, receiver, speakers, and even digital cable box. But now I find myself having to get off the Sony train. I'll give it 5 stars for DVDs but only 1 star for MP3s so overall I'll give it a disappointing 3 stars.
- I've been looking and looking and looking for a replacement for my old Panasonic DVD player. This is it. Not only does it play the new formats. It has 2 count them 2 sets audio outputs. This has been my biggest complaint when trying to find a DVD player. I've had a bad experience with my RCA carousel DVD player that had more than one set of audio outputs. The manufacturers seem to think that if you don't want a carousel you don't want to hook your DVD player into your stereo as well as your TV. There are times when you want theatre sound and there are times when you want regular TV. If you feel the same this is the DVD player for you
- I was looking for a decent DVD player to play my MP3's as well. It took me 3 players before I got to the this model. Too many players out there say 'MP3 compatible', but really don't handle all MP3's (skipping, loud popping, etc.). The Sony was the first one that handled ALL of my MP3's without a hitch. Like a previous reviewer already mentioned, it's pretty lame that Sony did not put in a Shuffle function for MP3 discs. They made it available for regular CD's, so what gives?
Oh yeah, the DVD player itself works fine. There's a few settings that allow you to customize the sound in case you don't have a 5.1 receiver (like me). Picture and playback are no problem so far since I bought it back in December of '02. For you MP3 freaks (like me), here's some recommendations to help with playback and other stuff. These tools are FREE on the web. Use Google to look for them. CDEx - want to make your own MP3's from your CD collection? This FREE ripper has no restrictions, lots of personalized settings and has one of the best encoders (LAME) for MP3. You'll get great sounding MP3's from this tool. MP3Gain - Tired of loud, then quiet MP3's? This tool helps equalize the volume of selected tracks, saving you from volume knob twiddling. MP3Trim - This helps with trimming excess space at the end of tracks as well as cleaning up garbage bits in the MP3. Ever had one that couldn't play or started part way in the song? This tool will fix those problems. Afer I got MP3Trim, ALL MP3's played in my boombox and Sony DVD player. Only limit on this software is that the MP3 song limit is 7 minutes. MP3DirectCut - Allows you to split MP3's (especially those albums that are one long MP3), trim them and lots of other stuff. Once you have the above tools and figure them out, your MP3 exeperience will be smoother and much more enjoyable.
- When I purchased this player seven months ago the salesperson quite emphatically suggested I also purchase an optional extended warranty. I should have taken the hint. Having purchased Sony products before without issue, I decided not to accept the offer. This was an unfortunate decision on my part. Shortly after the warranty expired the player stopped reading DVDs. Here's a trick for those of you experiencing similar difficulties; I have found, on occasion, that I can get it to play if I first use a couple of carefully chosen expletives and rap it on it's side.
