  1. I bought this Philips dvd/vcr combo recorder so I could burn dvds and have a good vcr. I did not know about all of the features that it has. It has a 60sec flash rewind for a T120 vcr tape. The instructions says that it can only record to dvd+r disc but I have a maxell dvd-rw disc and it works fine. I also like the dvd timer. I thought that if i wanted to set the dvd recorder to come on at 8 o clock i would have to set it two minutes early. Well thats not neccessary because the clock sets it self and the player will come on and stand by two minutes before the set time. The player will also let you use the tuner before it starts recording. For example. You have it set at 8 for channel 4, it will come on at 7:58 and turn to channel 4. If you change the channel it will turn back at 8. By the way the tv tuner is the fastest i've ever seen in my life. If you ever wished you could change the channel as fast as you finger will go, well with this one you can. The tuner is so fast,it will be on the channel that you want it on before the numbers on the screen say it. I love this recorder/player and if your thinking about buying it and you have more questions you can email me your question at imperialdefence@yahoo.com

  2. I wish I could have given negative grade for this product and Philips customer support.

I received the device 10 days ago, and that is how long I've gone through pain dealing with it.

The VHS part. I played a perfectly good VHS on this device, and after it ran, displayed picture on the TV for 10 minutes, the picture froze and stayed still forever. Forwarding it did not help. I still could hear the audio, but the video is a still screen. I tried with different tapes, to no avail.

The DVD player is a lemon, too. I played a good DVD disc, which I verified with a SONY player, and it stopped working every 10 minutes and automatically shut down.

I contacted Philips customer care, and got treated like an idiot. They want me to pay for shipping to a repair center for the brand new device that does not work right in the first place.

So go with any other brands, but not Philips for this type of product.

  3. I bought this DVD/VCR combo so that I could play DVD, VCD etc. multi format as well as PAL tapes from UK. However, I found out now from Philips Tech Support that it does not play some compact DVD as well as VCD. Their website states that it plays it all in region 1 but now I found out it does not. Hence, I have to return it to Philips and find out if it is a problem with the unit or not. I could play these on my neighbors Panasonic DVD. It is a bummer.

  1. Being Brits in NY, we have so missed our favourite English comedies, and now can not believe that we waiting this long before getting a multi-regional player.
It arrived very quickly, and in good condition. There was no special set-up required (or progamming), and we just popped in a disc and worked straight away.
This piece of equipment is great, and excellent value for money.

  2. Arrived very well packaged, in excellent condition, and very quickly! Does everything I wanted it to do, and it's great to finally be able to view some of my non-US DVD's!

  3. This DVD plays everything it say,I like it, it have a nice look and very thin, The only problem I have found is the open and close one the remote control, Other then that is great, Thank you

  4. We purchased this DVD player after returning from living in Germany for 2 years. We have many PAL DVDs. The machine plays all of our DVDs well. We are totally satisfied with the quality and service we have received.

  5. I am very happy with the ALL Region Philips DVD player I ordered for my boyfriend for Christmas. I had to purchase this, so that he could watch a region 3 movie. First, the shipment came so quickly--in time for Christmas, and was well packaged. I was especially happy to know that it was easy to get in contact with customer service, to ask any questions I had about the DVD player itself. All as advertised, I would definately recommend a friend buying items from this company. The DVD player itself worked well, money well spent.

  1. Beautiful picture and Great sound. Plays DVDs, CDs, SACD, and DVD-Audio with amazing clarity and resolution. Denon's signature electronics make CDs sound almost like Vinyl. I Paired it with Denon's AVR-3805 and got great results! Listen at a local high-end audio store.

  2. You will hear the motor of the transport as it spins the disc if you sit too close to this DVD player. I sit about 3 to 4 feet from the player, which is on a rack and connected by long cables to the rear projector about 12 feet in front of me. During quiet parts of movies and music, I would hear the player grinding away.

Most of the front-loading players these days seem to have this problem unless the builders of the player pay special attention to mechanically isolate the transport sonically so the listener does not have to hear this, what I find to be, very distracting noise. (And my other DVD player needs to go on my desk about 2 feet from my ears - and this 3910 ain't gonna be it!).

That said, many audiophiles swear by the sonics of this beast - especially after a 3rd party modifies the electronics some (usually adding a tube to the output stage). All I can say is they must be sitting far, far away from it at the time.

  3. I use the Denon unit to up-convert older DVD's for play on a 60" SONY HDTV. It does a great job, better than the up-convert function of the SAMSUNG bluray player (which is also quite good). The picture quality is not as good as the true HD when playing a Bluray disc, but the differances are subtle and my investment in the older discs is preserved. I have been told that this unit is the "standard" and I can see why.

  4. I've had my Denon DVD-3910 player now for a month and it sounds superb. I have not had the noisy problem with the transport that reviewer justacoder had. I listen to mostly classical music. The sound with regular CDs is smooth but detailed and is even better than my Denon DCM-380 CD player. This improved sound on regular CDs is due to the AL24 Processing Plus which smoothes out the PCM stair-step wave form to make it more like live audio waves which is similar the up sampling used on super high end CD players. However, AL24 Processing Plus does something the up sampling players don't do. It converts the CD PCM signal to 24 bit depth reducing the noise floor. I did an A/B comparison with Bach's Cantatas on Teldec and the sound was smoother and more detailed AND easier to listen on the Denon DVD-3910 compared to the Denon DCM-380. The sound from HDCDs and SACDs is incredible! It sounds realistic, as if I was sitting in front of a live orchestra. The timbre of the instruments is particularly more realistic than what you hear on regular CDs.

I found the video picture to be superb, almost as good as HD-DVD. This Denon up-converts regular DVDs.

  5. I bought a Denon DVD 3910 in January through Amazon. Price was $599 from an authorized Denon dealer. So far, I have been very pleased. I use the Denon to feed an Audio Research REF 1 preamp, NAD power amp, and Dynaudio Contour S5.4 speakers. I mainly listen to jazz and classical and try to buy DVD-A and SACD discs whenever possible. I have also used the Denon for movies. Both sound and visuals are excellent. My TV is an old Sony Vega CRT so I can't say a whole lot about picture quality, but I usually don't watch the glass t**t (Harlan Ellison's term) more than a few minutes a week. I have no doubt the 3910 will meet my DVD needs (I have a lot of DVDs but just don't watch movies much anymore and can't stand commercial television).

The reliability of the 3910 has been great. I have not normally found the transport to be noisy, but the transport is sensitive to disc placement. The few times that the Denon has balked at reading a disc, I have been able to correct the problem by making sure the disc is centered. I wonder if a lot of problems reported are because folks place the disc slightly off center. It doesn't take much to cause the 3910 to not be able to read a disc. Otherwise it has function flawless on SACDs, DVDs, DVD-As, and CDs. I probably have averaged 3 hours of play per day.

My other player in my main system is a Music Hall CD-25a. The Music Hall is also excellent but cost about the same as the Denon and only plays CDs.

  1. I don't have the space to explain all the places this thing has been. True it does pause on some titles, it does refuse to play on occasion. I bought it in Oct 03 before going to Afghanistan. While I was there I used it virtually everyday for 9 months. I brought it back home and used it in the car and house for 17 months with a 2-year-old constantly beating on it. Everytime I thought it was gone, it came back to life. Now I've spent 4 months in Iraq without a problem. Blow the dust out every once in a while and have patience. Maybe I just got lucky but I'd do it again.
On a final note, when the remote came up missing, the Mintek website still has the model predominantly listed and all the accessories are still available for replacement. I have a Kodak camera I bought last Christmas (2004) and I can barely find a mention of it on their site.

  2. I purchased this as a gift. Christmas day we had to call Mintek. It seized up. The tech lady said "just take your finger and slide the optics back and forth a few times... that usually fixes it.." Well.. I'm no genius on laser optics and all the gearing involved, but that does not sound like a great "fix". I have been on the phone with these folks numbers of times. It continues to seize up, refuse to turn on and assorted other problems. Now I have sent it to them to replace. Mintek lady calls me and says they just received it and will send it back in (5) FIVE weeks. I yelled "put a new one in the mail and send it." No... evidently it comes in with a "Batch" and can only go out with a "Batch". Evidently Mintek only ships stuff out every 5 weeks of so. I have visions of young Chinese with their fingers on the optics sliding them back and forth....

Bottom line... If you have a choice. Choose something else!!!

  3. RELIABILITY

Purchased this in mid-2004 -- used for lots of car trips, airplane trips, and motels. Still works. This is quite a robust little DVD player, and a darn good buy.

Black screen problem -- it seemed to get a bit confused; turn it off, switch to the output type you want (onscreen is 'tft', a different display is 'video'). The black screen problem went away. Note, even when the screen is black, you can see the image in strong light, it's just that the light behind the screen is not on because it thinks you're watching a different TV.

It starting making clicking noises a couple of years ago as the disk spins around. Obviously, this is not a harbinger of doom, as it has still been running strong.

I had problems with it recognizing a disk, once. Turns out there was condensate on the lens, so I dried it and the problem was again resolved.

    FEATURES
Pretty well listed everywhere else. Yes the image is good. Yes the sound is better through earphones. Battery life is 2.5 hours...still, after 2 years.

  4. Mintek has no customer service. Sent a Dvd player to them for minor repair, after 2 months they wanted $60 to repair. I refused and they sent back the player totally disabled. Do not buy from this company!

  5. The first time I tried to play a DVD on the player ,it didn't work. The disc stopped every 10-15 seconds. I had to start it all over again repeatedly. After 6-8 tries, I gave up and sent it back for a refund which I still haven't recieved. Don't even think of buying this product.

  1. The only reason I gave it one star is because there isn't a negative star to give.
I spent 3 days trying to make this thing work right and called tech support 3 times...still junk.
The sound was out of sync and the picture jumps and apparently can't be corrected. I updated my drivers, uninstalled and then reinstalled. Finally on the third call to tech support the tech himself told me that this was a common problem with this product.
Don't waste your money nor time.

  2. This is easily one of the worst products I've ever bought for my computer. Complete waste of time. I should have known I was in for a long day when the installer hung on the 2nd disc and I had to download a patch from the vendor's website. Never a good sign. I've already wasted an entire day on this lame product so I don't feel like going into too much detail but if all you want to do is capture video to your harddrive then this product works great. However, if you actually want to convert that video into a DVD then you're in for a frustrating time. I've got a decent system with core 2 duo processor and 2GB of RAM so I blame buggy software for the constant application lock ups (or the endless looping). I eventually gave up and just tried to create iso files I could burn to DVD later and the software couldn't even handle that. If I'd done maybe 5min of research beforehand I would have discovered that a lot of others have had a bad experience with the software.

Sure it's cheap but how much is your time worth? If you actually decide to buy this product make sure you can easily return it (like I did). I would pay five times what this product cost for something that would actually work.

  3. Horrible software - what looks like an easy plug and play product ended up being buggy and unable to deliver anything. After multiple discussions with their tech support (friendly yet ineffectual), numerous re-installs and upgrades, the product still wouldn't work, leading once to a total crash of my system.

And before you ask, I am computer literate and run a new Dell Windows XP system with twice the recommended system requirements that the product advices.

    VERY DISAPPOINTING

  4. This product was never able to capture audio from VCR or digital video camera. Video was jumpy and not smooth. Spoke to tech support four times to get a resolution on the audio capture and they were not help. Tech support is NOT a toll-free call. Find something else.

  1. I was looking for DVD recorder include IEEE port for Camcorder and DVD-RAM capacity.
Many brands offer, first one or second, but was so difficult to find latest format technology, IEEE input ports and good brand support in only one equipment, navigation menus are so easy to understand has many options to use as a common VCR, has a wide options for audio output. I'm happy with this selection and price was really good.

  2. THE PICTURE IS EVEN BETTER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. IT WAS A LITTLE HARD TO OPERATE AT FIRST. BUT, I AM HAPPY WITH IT..YOU CAN'T BEAT IT FOR THE PRICE.

  3. The rave reviews posted here are a bit startling, when you consider that there are three major defects in this unit. First, the input noise reduction is so mild it's ineffective, and the output noise filters are simple blur effects that do more harm than good. Second, you can't get a true black or white level from this machine, so recordings look washed-out when played elsewhere (a professional proc amp doesn't help, either. This machine filters all input to 15 IRE and won't allow a true black from any source, including cable). There are settings for "Darker", "Enhanced", etc. - they do nothing for black-white levels, they just dim or wash out the image. Third, DVD-RW is a fantasy with this machine, they just won't work. It's a shame, because even at long recording times there are very few artifacts. Too bad Toshiba designers prefer lackluster images. They seem OK when played on this machine, but look closer and you'll see they're just dark, not richly colored. Another glitch: Record a home-made (not retail) VHS tape into this machine, and when you try to copy it to another DVD recorder the Toshiba will not allow it until you use a pro-level TBC unit on the Toshiba's output. In fact, you can't even make copies of your own, home-made DVD's. Supposedly many of these problems were corrected on later units, but newer Toshibas for 2006 might improve to the point where they could replace your high-end VCR. But don't count on it. Home DVD machines have a long way to go before they can compete with the 30+ years of evolution behind a quality VHS machine. IF this will be your one and only DVD player/recorder, you could live with it. Just don't expect good performance from your recordings if you have to replace this unit or give your washed-out images to friends.

  4. It really is hard to beat the price of this product, and I have been using mine for over a year without too many problems, but there are some problems for which a good price cannot compensate. Reliability is very important to me in determining the value of any recording device, and this one is not very trustworthy. Recording stops if there is dust on the lens (you won't know until after recording starts, so if you're expecting to come home and watch the show you missed, guess what?), if it thinks the dvd-r is dirty, or if it's just not feeling up to snuff that day.

Picture quality is key. The D-KR2 is okay over a composite connection, but it is red and green and that's pretty much it over a component cable. At least that's how it looks on my lcd tv. Maybe it's okay on something else.

You can't just make extra copies of your home movies or edit them on your computer. This puppy copy-protects your memories. I'm not kidding. So don't toss those Hi-8's. You will need them again the next time you want to make a dvd from the content.

I've ordered another dvd-recorder with a hard disk drive. It may not be much better than this, but at least once I load my home movies, I can burn an extra copy for my Mom. It's her family, too, after all.

  5. I realize that this review is late for this item's product cycle, but just in case anyone is considering buying it, don't, for the following reasons:
--it does not recognize about 50% of all commercially produced DVDs, it claims they are damaged even though they play fine on every other player I own
--it does not properly finalize recorded DVDs, they are useless on other players
--it can not even replay some of the DVDs that it recorded on this recorder

An extraordinary piece trash that has convinced me never to buy another Toshiba product.

  1. A couple of months into owning this DVD player, it started to skip on some DVD's. Eventually it got bad enough to where it wouldn't play any disc's at all, it only gives me an error on the front saying "disc error" even with brand new dvd's.

    doh!

  2. Just forget it. Don't buy it, period. I've had two in the past year. The first broke within one week of receipt and it took Toshiba Customer Service more than TWO MONTHS to replace it. The replacement unit broke within a month. Toshiba Customer Service was awful - a totally anti-consumer attitude. Thanks to this inferior product, I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM TOSHIBA EVER AGAIN!

  3. I keep buying Toshiba products because I have NEVER had a problem with any of them. I have two 36 inch TVs, a VCR, a single disc DVD player, this 5 disc DVD player, and a laptop computer - all Toshiba. I don't own stock in the company, either. As far as this DVD player is concerned, I wanted a 5 disc player and looked at nothing but Toshiba's offerings. I picked this little gem up and have been very happy with it for over two years. I honestly can't think of a single instance when this thing didn't do what it is supposed to do. Of course, I did read the manual before I hooked it up.

  4. I've had this about a year and a half. I liked everything about it, but a few months ago it started skipping sometimes when playing CDs. I tried using cleaning disks but it's just gotten progressively worse, now it's just too annoying to play a CD. I called Toshiba and they said the CD lens probably needs to be replaced, I called an authorized service center and that would cost $150. haha.

We had a Sony before that likewise died after about 2 years...

From reading reviews, it seems that anywhere from 30-50% of even high-end CD/DVD players won't last more than 2 years.

    It really is ridiculous.

  5. As others have mentioned this player is extremely slow to operate - slow to load DVD's slow to start playing, slow to change discs. Any command from the remote takes 1-2 seconds to initiate.

But the main problem for me over the past 2-3 years has been progressively worsening skipping and disk errors. Brand new DVD's simply will not play on this player. Some will play flawlessly, but I have not made it through a single movie without the DVD player freezing or locking up. There are some cases where the player will shut itself off!

As of now it will not play 75% of my DVD's, saying "disc error". I am replacing this unit and have decided never to buy another piece of Toshiba consumer electronics again.
