  1. We love this DVD player--bought two for my kids to take on trips (instead of the overpriced headrest DVD players offered with our new car). Our opinion: super sharp picture, great sound, easy to use, and the swivel screen is wonderful. Overall, it is very sturdy: the battery pack is integrated into the bottom of the unit, so there is nothing to break off. The charge lasts a long time: enough for two movies and more. Definitely worth its price to us.

  2. love my dvd player, works the way it should, short and simple, it does exactly what it wants to do

  3. This DVD player displays clear picture with loud enough sound. Easy to use. I like the future of a detachedable battery pack which can be set aside while playing the DVD at home.

  4. When shopping at Best Buy for a portable DVD player, I tried a Toshiba, the Panasonic LS86 and asked about a Sony. My salesperson, who was knowledgeable, steered me away from the Sony, saying he didn't like it because it has a "glossy screen." So I tried the current Toshiba 9" and the Panasonic LS86, touted for its 13 hour battery life. I selected the LS86 because it has better blacks, meaning the Toshiba had a more washed out picture. I took the LS86 home and while learning how to use it I was pleased at the degree of control you have. (Yes, this will soon be a review of the DVP-FX820 - I returned the LS86 and got an FX820 - but first a little more about the Panasonic.) With the LS86 you have great control: you can control the brightness of the subtitles, you can reposition them, you have several factory presets for picture and one user picture preset, there are degrees of noise reduction available, a number of audio settings to control the tone of the sound and its stereo spread. It seemed great except for one thing: the picture was slightly disappointing. Text was awfully chunky. The edges of things looked rough. In a word, it had a lot of aliasing.

I went on line to read some reviews of the LS86. I'd read reviews prior to shopping but, somehow, hadn't found any for the current Sony player, the DVP-FX820. On my second internet visit I found the Sony right away. When I learned it has much greater resolution, I packed up the LS86, went back to the store and exchanged.

The DVP-FX820 has lots more pixels and that makes for a lots better picture. It has less control over those pixels, but as nice as adjustments are, they don't compensate for a poorer image. So, in my mind, the Sony is better.
    ___________

The downside of the FX820: this model has a fair amount of edge enhancement, or sharpening. And there's no way to control it. I'm not going to describe what it looks like, because if you own one of these units and edge enhancement is below your radar, why point it out.

What about the glossy screen the salesperson mentioned? When he said "glossy screen," I imagined that the screen itself was shiny. What he was referring to is the fact that the screen is surrounded by a shiny black plastic bezel. A matte finish would be less distracting, but the shiny plastic should not be a deal breaker.

The contrast of the default LCD settings: I had to work a little with the "Backlight" and "Contrast" settings to keep the blacks from being crushed. Otherwise, things like someone's head of black hair might lose their detail.

    _____________

Summary: A good solid unit with a consumer-oriented design philosophy. The controls are basic and fairly simple to operate. The picture seems to be the best in its price range. The audio, through headphones, is fine.

  5. I have been using this player every night now since the day I got it. I play it all night long while watching movies and falling asleep; I can't fall asleep without my dvd player. My previous one was the 810 and it quit working but I have the extended warrantee on it and it is going to be replaced free. This time, I fell in love with the PINK color of this one, and have not given it any rest since I got it. But, you do need to clean the lens with a lens cleaner after about 10 hours of use or approximately 5 movies. The picture on this player is incredible. I got the 820 this time and it is just incredible. The colors are extremely vibrant and sharp; sound is perfect, and I can't say enough good things about it. If you're contemplating this particular player...GO FOR IT! You will NOT be disappointed!

5 comments about Philips DCP951/37 9-Inch Portable DVD Player with Ipod Docking.
  1. the product arrived as promised from the seller, in good condition and on time. the screen is a nice size. i gave this as a gift and the recipient, an 18 year old girl, absolutely loves it. we have friends who looked at it and have decided to purchase it as well. it was a great choice!

  2. This product is wonderful to watch those videos that the I-Pod screen doesn't do justice to. Watch in larger format and compact to carry with you wherever you go. I'd suggest this product to a friend.

  3. (I use an iPod Touch) This device is a great idea but it really seems like it was rushed to market. The materials are light plastic which gives it a very cheap feel. It is light weight though. The controls are not as integrated as you would expect. For example, you have to open the iPod bay to turn on movies and route the video to the large screen. Something that you half-expect to be able to do automatically. The buttons on the device don't seem to consistently control the iPod at all, so again you have to open the iPod bay to change movies etc. The screen is large and seems o.k. although the resolution isn't super-high quality. Speakers seem o.k. The lack of an integrated stand is just plain silly though. I have a Logitech mm50 ipod speaker docking station with exactly the integrated stands that this thing needs. Maybe they really just added the iPod docking station as an afterthought which would make sense. As a consumer, though, you see the iPod dock and think "oh, cool, they made something for the iPod to interface with seamlessly". Nope.

  4. I expected more, especially at this price point. My chief complaints are with the stand and the picture. The stand works great on a flat surface, but if you are not at a table or something sturdy (like in the car) it has to be held or propped. The picture is not so defined. Not good for sharing, you have to have just the right angle to get the most from the picture which is less than desirable at any angle. Would not have bought this one had I been able to test it first.

  5. I picked one of these up. I was psyched about the iPod dock. A great idea and from what I can currently find, also a unique feature. No one else has a portable DVD with an iPod dock. At the time of purchase I was torn between this Philips model and the Sony FX820. I'm a big Sony fan but the iPod dock really had me.

I got it home and popped my iPhone into the slide out dock. After fidgeting with it for a couple of minutes I was watching a movie from my iPhone on the screen. Cool. But.....then I noticed. Unless you are looking at this player's screen head on, you can't see a damned thing. If you change the viewing angle just a bit, the LCD screen becomes nearly black. Unviewable. Very disappointing. To me, this one fault makes this player useless. It's a shame. The iPod dock feature is cool.

The unit does feel VERY plastic-y. Also, this is an open faced design. You can't close it up. The screen is always exposed. The DVD loads on the back of the unit too. Kind of clumsy.

On a positive note. The unit didn't seem affected by any cellphone GSM noise.

A cool idea but flawed by seriously poor image quality. I would recommend the Sony FX820. You can hook up an iPod or just about any external video source using a cable. The Sony is far superior in material, build quality and picture quality. Sorry Philips!

  1. LOVE IT! THE PRICE WAS GREAT AND IT WAS DELIVERED VERY PROMPTLY. THE VCR PLAYED SOME OLD HOME MOVIES THAT I HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO PLAY ON MY OLD VCR.
    HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

  2. i bought two of these. one as a gift. both have worked great for about a year. it is clear the unit does not have a tuner. the greatest thing about it is it plays divX files. burn a set of divX files to a dvd and insert it. you get a menu of all the files, select one and it will play, turn off the machine and when it restarts it will go right back to where it left off. this means you can put as many as seven divX movies on a single dvd, and play them as you like.

for me the weakest thing is the black face on the remote which makes it awful to see in even semi-darkness.

the remote is not 5 seconds slow on either of the two purchased. and the reason i came back here is to price another one for another friend who saw mine and wants one of their own.

  3. I bought this unit mainly for the VCR, and it works fine. The lack of a tuner actually is a benefit in my case because (for some unknown reason) the tuner of my previous VCR conflicted with my cable box, causing a snowy picture and poor quality recording.
I also use the DVD player to play music CD's I've created on my computer.
This was just what I was looking for at a very good price.

  4. I bought this as a backup for my current VCR which also happens to be a Toshiba combo that I bought almost 3 years ago. (which by the way still works great) This new unit has all the functionality you will need to playback your pre recorded tapes and make new recordings as long as you have some sort of outboard cable box/tuner. The DVD player section is fine. No HDMI connection, but the component video jacks display a good quality picture. I would say my only real complaint would be that Toshiba is still using the very small remote that they have used for the last 3 years on these combos units they make. NO biggie though. It works but if it really bothers you just buy an inexpensive universal remote that has buttons more to your liking.

The cosmetics on this combo are very pleasing. Build quality seems good for the price and it really does look nice. Only thing I don't know yet is if it will last. Only time will tell, but my last unit is almost identical and has lasted 3 years.

  5. This unit outputs blurred and faintly colored video in both vcr and dvd modes, had to return back for a full refund. My 10 year old Mitsubishi that this was supposed to replace was outputting perfect picture on the same setup. Highly unrecommended, what a disappointment in Toshiba.

  1. I set out looking for a portable that I could depend on when travelling. I wanted a bigger screen and quality audio visual because I really want to enjoy my movies and other DVD whether they are on the small screen or hooked-up to a bigger screen. I really feel like I found what I was looking for in this model.

In the box: Player, battery pack, remote control, power cords and adapters for home and car, special AV cables for output to a TV, owner's manual, etc.

Setup: Straightforward. Attach the battery pack, plug it in and power it up. Power is controlled by a hard power switch on the left side of the unit.

Performance: First, let me say that the picture quality is very good. The output is only 480p and its LCD, so the picture can appear lined in bright daylight scenes, but that is as expected I think. The sound quality is excellent through a headset. The volume control is good and can be raised to compensate for car sounds, although I can see how in high noise areas noise-cancelling headphones would be helpful. The built-in speakers are limited and tinny sounding. I had expected the quality issues, but was a bit surprised by the volume.

Connecting to other devices: Because the output is 480p, the resolution of the display may be degraded from what one might expect of an HD display unit, but definitely meets the quality of the player's standard. Sound is quite good as well, coming across as well as through my standard DVD player. Connecting is easy, although the connection to the SDP19S is non-standard, so don't lose the cable!

Notes: The remote control is larger than I expected and very full-featured - very nice! The body of this device is solid and could take a beating. The swivel for the screen is firm and solid as well - you won't accidentally separate screen and body. I haven't tried all the different kinds of media this player accepts, so I can't address them.

All in all, I think this is a very well made, technically sound, and fully featured DVD player.

  2. I bought a Panasonic DVD-LS80 8.5" Portable DVD Player for my sister and didn't like it as much as this Toshiba SD-P91S 9-Inch Portable DVD Player. The size is bigger most of other portable player but this has a bigger screen, easier to watch from a distance. I liked the design, looked very nice and the quality was good, worth my money! Glad I bought it!

  1. bought this dvd player for the car for my 5mth old. He didnt like to ride in the car and would scream everywhere we would go. being that he loved to watch baby einstein in the house i decided i would try anything. bought this product and it has become a life saver. our car rides are so much pleasurable. only downfall is he can now kick the buttons with his toes to turn it off. overall rate this product great, would def recommend it.
small con- battery life is very long.

  2. I was very pleased with the screen clarity and size for such a compact player. The battery is impressively part of the machine instead of hanging off the back. The black face adds to the picture's appeal. A substantial list of accessories is included: 2 headphones, a cassette adapter, cigarette light adapter, AC adapter, remote control, AV cables and headrest case. Jody Bissoon

  3. We recieved this product as a Christmas present this past year. It was a great gift because we have a 1 year old and it pacifies her while we drive around town and take trips. I can't say that I was disappointed with the performance for the first 3 months. About the 4th month we started receiving a "Wrong Disc" error. We bought a DVD lens cleaner which seemed to help but continued getting the error about once a week. Last week while we were vacationing, we got the wrong disk error with no recovery. I called COBY and they recommended the disk cleaning. I told them that I already did that. They recommended that I take it to Circuit City and they could fix it. I asked if they would reimburse me for the costs to get it fixed and she said no. They only have a 90 day warranty. How ironic that this product starting acting up on the 4th month of use.

I am very disappointed that COBY doesn't stand behind their products better than this. I will go out and purchase a name brand product that will stand behind their products.

My recommendation is to do the same. DO NOT BUY FROM COBY.

  4. The box has a list of supported formats which includes DVD+-R and DVD+-RW, but I have two of these Coby 7050's and neither one will play a recorded DVD. The user manual inside the box does not indicate that it should be supported, although the outside of the box is explicit that they are supported. I have tried 5 discs and they all come up with "Wrong Disc" errors. The player does support Video CD's on a CD-R, though I have problems with VCD's with menus. Auto-play VCDs play correctly, but I was unable to select a title inside a menu. I've only had the players for 1 week, but they seem solid and both work fine. The picture and sound are average or perhaps slightly above average. I purchased these with the 2 year warranty because I do anticipate they will break within the next 2 years and I'll want my money back when they do. Plenty of extras are in the box: 2 sets of headphones, car charger, AC charger, video cable, mounting straps for a headrest (which I haven't tried yet), remote with batteries, and the player battery. I'd rate this a good investment, but not if you need to play recorded DVD's.

  5. I bought this unit for my grandaughter. It quit after 6 months. She is 29 years old, so it was not because of abuse to the player. It had a one year warranty on parts, but, guess what!! Coby doesn't stand behind their warranty. She called their customer service with the warranty in hand, and was told that the warranty they had in their computer files was totally different from the one she received with the unit. She also was told that she would be better off just to purchase another one. Also, a repair shop stated that parts are virtually unavailable for Coby products. Please, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING COBY!!! TOTAL JUNK

  1. I ordered this as a gift for my husband. He loves how crisp and clear Blu-ray discs play on this, but he loses his mind with the amount of time it can take to loads a Blu-ray disc and when it skips in the middle of a movie. (This happens almost every time we watch something on Blu-ray.) I like to play CDs through the receiver through this, but it takes forever to load the CD and skip tracks--it skips up to 4 seconds only when trying to fast forward. I would recommend this DVD player for movies, but be patient if it skips or doesn't function properly. We're on our second player (thanks to Amazon/Samsung standing behind their products).

  2. I purchased this DVD player to go with my Samsung LCD / LED TV. It works good.

  3. It does what it's supposed to. The picture (on my 50" DLP) looks great, no matter what DVD I'm watching. It is sleek in design... although the "power button" does glow when running, which can be kinda annoying. The remote is a typical Samsung remote, easy to use, but not real flashy.

All-in-all, a very good unit for the money.

  4. I ordered this player because I have had problems in the past with other DVD players not working with home made DVDs. This one not only looks great but plays everything Ive put into it! The face is flashy but functional and the stock remote is very useful. I was able to play even film project movies that would not work on some computer DVD players! Great machine! Highly recommended. This product is well worth the extra couple bucks!

  5. This DVD player broke after I played it only three times. It was connected to my TV via component outputs. For some reason the component outputs stopped working. I tested multiple cables and configurations and nothing would work.

I brought it to a store to be tested. They plugged it into a TV and tried all of the outputs. They were puzzled after trying to get component to work, only to see the other ones work just fine.

  1. We have had this unit about a month, but it is the best we have owned, and we have gone through about 5 combo units.
It would not come on using channels 2,3 or 4, so I called customer service, told a very nice man my problem, and he told me to set input to AV. Have had no problem since.
It records from TV to VHS & DVD using timer recordings, it copies from VHS to DVD & DVD to VHS & the picture qualities on all are perfect. The menu is simple and easy to use, and the instruction manuel is easy to use and it is in English!JVC DRMV100B 1080p Upconverting DVD Recorder VCR Combo with Built In Tuner

  2. After buying 2 similar units (a Sony and a Magnavox) and returning them both, I was skeptical that this would be The One. Well, so far, this unit has performed very well in all areas. We record most of our TV shows to watch later so a tuner was important so that we could watch another program (or go to work) while recording one or more. So far, recording to DVD-R or to VHS has been successful with fairly simple instructions. The various menus are a little different at first but they make sense after a few times. Setup and channel preset were very easy and efficient. The remote is, of course, itsy bitsy, but it could be worse and they do include batteries! I have dubbed a few VHS tapes to DVD-R with success - they look better than the originals in most cases. I am also discovering the joys of recording a TV program to a DVD-RW instead of a VHS tape. DVD viewing is great and it also plays audio CDs quite well although I wish it could read the track information instead of simply saying "Track One, Track Two," etc. However, since I don't expect to use the DVD player as an audio player, it isn't a big deal. I am quite happy with this player - third time's the charm, apparently.

  3. The device is good quality and works well however, I bought this item to archive all my VHS movies (that I bought in the good old days when VHS was the way to go) to DVD, it worked for some of them but not all, anything that has copy write protection it would not copy/dub from tape to DVD. I will have to find something else for my remaining 75 plus tapes that I want to put on DVD before the tape wears out and I cannot play them anymore.

  4. This JVC vhs dvd recorder is great and very easty to use. I have tried several other brands, in fact one brand I had to send back 3 times for repair because it would not work properly.

  1. Yes, i know HDDVD lost the format war, blah blah. if you're looking for a nice 'upconverting' player though, this is a great deal. $75 with two free HDDVDs to boot. amazing images, even with standard DVDs. this machine is a steal, even if it's 'old tech.'

  2. excellent value, bought for sub $100 from CC. upconverts and plays HD DVD. playing regular DVD's look awesome on my 1080i screen. still waiting for sub $100 blu-ray player and then maybe i will consider getting 1080p TV

  3. I bought this as used (refurbished) and it's absolutely great! Very easy to hookup. And beautiful clarity, we absolutely love it and highly recommend it!

  4. I know HD DVD no longer is going to be produced but the HD DVD player suports dvd as well and it does have a better image quality over other DVD players.

  5. the hd dvd player came wit box, instruction booklet.

  1. This DVD player has very good audio and video performance. The HDMI connection works perfectly. It is a little bit slow when starting loading a DVD but that's OK.

  2. There is nothing wrong with this dvd player; it delivers a good picture. However, I did not notice much of a difference in picture quality between this new player and my old standard dvd player that it replaced.

  3. I just got it to use with my recently purchased 26" Sony Bravia HD TV. I bought the silver, because it is stacked above my HD Cable box which is also silver.

I had to be creative and pilfered the isolating feet from an old, non working Laser Disc player. I attached 4 of them to the bottom of the new Sony DVD player using rubber cement tape and duct tape. I did this because, the cable box generates a huge amount of heat and the isolating feet on the DVD player are practicly flat.

This is one slick looking, easy to use and gorgeous DVD player. DVDs that would not play on my old DVD player, play just fine on it.

The picture is stunning and I am thrilled. It works so smoothly with my new Bravia as well. I doubt that I will ever buy a Blu Ray DVD, so I could not be happier with this one.

I only paid $9.95 (with free shipping) for the HDMI cable. I bought the Cables To Go.

Having just paid over $60 for an HDMI Cable by Monster, that I purchased at a Circuit City, I see no difference at all in the reception between both cables. I only bought the Monster Cable because I had returned the composite video cables to my cable company and needed an HDMI immediately. My choices, locally, were very limited.

    I totally recommend this player.

  4. It does make a difference as far the visuals go. Soundwise, I'm not sure yet.

  5. If you want something cheap and be closer to HD , this is the product, the image is awesome . This product will really upscale your image from 480I to your native TV resolution. Dont get confuse : this is no high definition .You can only obtain High definition with a HD/Blue ray player and a HD/Blue Ray disc , however it is and excellent option !
