5 comments about Philips DVP3050V/37 DVD/VCR Combo.
- I bought this DVD in January 2006 and have not regretted to this day. There is the issue of the eject button being absent but then again, when you eject via remote control, you still have to get up to get the DVD out of the player so maybe it is not so necessary to have an eject button. I've had no problems with this player playing my home made DVDs unlike others. It is a bit difficult to set up but besides that it is a great purchase.
- Can't say much for the video or sound quality, menu options, or anything really, since this thing broke after 2 minutes of watching Monsters, Inc. on DVD. Playback just froze, the thing stopped recognizing that DVDs were in unless you turned the thing off and then back on again, and after another minute it wouldn't even start playing the thing at all, just whirred a lot.
So, dud.
- I purchased one of these combos and was very disappointed...It will be returned immediately. I purchased from Value City and the DVD tray does not work....a malfunction, I assume. It is definitely a waste of time and money. I higly Reccommend not wasting your money on this one!
- I bought this for my elderly mother - not a whiz at electronics but she knows how to insert a disc and hit play. However, it seems the machine doesn't know how to scan a disc and play. We would get various screen messages, "insert a disc," "faulty disc," "loading," but the thing wouldn't kick in. We'd eject and clean the disc. We'd eject and and re-load the disc. We'd turn it off and on again; "insert a disc," "faulty disc," "loading." Sometimes, after who knows which combination, Oh! it would play! Pretty darn frustrating for an elderly lady and her daughter so I swapped it out for my Samsung 4600. Now she is happily watching Christmas with Andre Rieu and I am listening to jet aircraft approching as I try to watch a VHS cassett. (it's pretty loud)
- MY GOD! I cannot believe some of the other reviews for this item! Complaints because it does not have an Eject Button on the remote control?!!! Have we become so bloody lazy in the U.S. that we cannot get off our butt and press the Eject Button on the face of the machine! Give me a break! I purchased my unit earlier this year through Amazon and while it was a little difficult to understand the different functions at first it has worked wonderfully since then. Yes, from time to time it will not switch from DVD to VCR without pressing the VCR Eject Button to re-set the machine, at the US$57.99 I paid for the unit it is a small price to pay. I have owned both Philips and Philips/Magnavox TV's, VCR's and DVD Players since the 1980's and have found them all to be very durable and long lasting if treated with respect. DVD Picture and Sound are fine on this machine and the Picture and Sound on the VCR are really dependant on the tape quality being played or recorded upon. I believe this is an exellent piece for the cost and would recomend it to those looking for an inexpensive DVD/VCR Combo!

- My family including three young children (9,6 & 4) just got back from a 2300 mile one week trip. I purchased this before I left and consider it the greatest investment I ever made. I placed on the center consol of my 1999 Tahoe. All three kids could see the picture clearly despited being seat belted in. The controls easy to use. You could even read captions. The only complaint was the wireless speakers that broadcast to the FM radio. There was so much interferance, that we used the built in speakers, but, the sound was good and it worked.
- I think this is a great machine but a little thick. But I like some features of it like it's F. M. radio. On long trips we play with it accept my younger 6 year old brother wants to hook up his video games to it.

5 comments about Panasonic DMR-ES46VS DVD/VCR Recorder Player.
- I purchased this machine refurbished from Panasonic for a total of $150, including shipping, making the imperfections quite tolerable. It does much more than my previous DVD recorder which was twice the price. I have a Sony Bravia LCD HDTV and the display from this machine is quite good. After setting up the format for my widescreen TV, it worked like a charm.
I do not intend to use it as a tuner. I rent an HD DVR from Comcast for tuning. I really did not see much difference in the video quality on playback with commercial DVDs, but for my home recorded DVDs, the improvement is significant. VHS also will play through the HDMI cable, with some improvement too. These are formated for 4:3 aspect ratio and there really is no getting around it until you can get an input that supports high resolution 16:9 through component or HDMI interface. I was able to record from my OnDemand playlist through Comcast (something you cannot do on the rented DVR).
As with other reviewers, I am puzzled by the lack of eject and open/close functions on the remote, which even the cheap sets have. However, this machine does have very easy to use buttons that are large and right next to each slot on the machine. My past machines had tiny buttons that looked like all the others for the eject and open/close functions, making the remote almost a necessity. You do have to get up and walk over to the machine to get your disk or videotape out anyway, so this was not a huge deal for me. However, it did have trouble recognizing some DVDs at first pass, and I had to open/close the tray a few times before it recognized there was a playable disc in the drawer. So, you may want to wait by the machine while it reads before you sit down to watch.
The remote is fairly intuitive, particularly if you are used to DVD-R functions.
A huge rave for me is in regard to the flexible recording option, allowing you to customize the recording time on the DVD to fill the DVD, regardless of the length of the recording. This way you have the best possible recording quality. This is quite similar to DVD recording on your PC. Finalizing is a snap and much quicker than my old Sansui recorder.
- This DMR-ES46V was my third and last Panasonic DVD player, though my first recorder. I have yet to find one that will last much more than a year, using the device perhaps twice a week. Perhaps a refurbished one for under $150 would be worthwhile. While the functions are good for the price, product life for Panasonic players leaves much to be desired, at least based on my experience.
- Purchased this at Sam's. Used it for 13 months. Of course, at 13.5 months, the power supply fan stops working and it keeps shutting down. Spent a looong time on hold waiting for help from Panasonic. After they transferred me twice (= more hold time), I got someone on who faxed me a form to send in for repair. No offer to extend the warranty. They just made sure I knew I would pay for parts/labor. I will not buy future video equipment from Panasonic because of their phone support and failure rate.
- Received the refurbished Panasonic Model DMR-ES46VS from Jungle Discount promptly. Packaging was poor so case took a couple of dents. The VCR section of this unit will NOT play a tape made on any other machine. Oddball speeds and overall poor quality picture. Interference cannot be taken out by manual or automatic tracking. Closed captions are garbled. If you are thinking of using this unit to convert VHS tapes to DVD, PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY! Even brand new tapes recorded at SP jump all around. Tuner gives a very poor quality picture.
The DVD section is very good. Manual covers a lot and is written at "power user" level. The unit has so many features that you will have to almost memorize the book because the most common usage is hidden. Poor writing and organization.
- Panasonic does it again. I have always had good luck with Panasonic products. I owned a Phillips DVD recorder that created vertical sound bars across the screen. They were very faint but also very anoying. Phillips tried to fix the problem but had no success. I purchased the Panasonic DMR-ES46VS because it had all of the features I was looking for and the price was very good for a unit with all of the features. I have used the unit for 9 months and I love it. The picture and sound quality are great. I use the HDMI output to take advantage of the up converting. I would recommend this unit to anyone. You will not be disappointed.

5 comments about JVC XV-N40BK Progressive-Scan Slim DVD Player , Black.
- This is my first DVD player. I've had it since June 2003, and it still works. It lives here with me, and there are no kids around to destroy it, and it gets played once or twice a week. Why wouldn't it work? It's extremely slim, has a cool blue light when it's on, and I've been able to play everything I've ever gotten from Netflix. So, as far as I'm concerned, this player is great!
There are a couple of things I've noticed about it, and I don't know if this is common practice with VCRs or not. But not all my reviews are for ranting or raving; I like to inform, as well! So here's what I know: I don't have cable, and I've noticed that if I sit the machine on top of my TV, the reception on the TV gets very snowy. It took me a while to figure out why my picture got so bad, when I had a powered antenna that usually brings in a great picture for me. This problem went away when I moved the DVD player off the TV and onto its own shelf. I think the machine is very quiet. Mind you, I live in an apartment, and I watch my TV with stereo headphones, so machine noise as I'm watching a movie is not an issue for me. So if the DVD player is making noise, it's not enough to bother either me or the neighbors. The remote has more buttons on it than I will ever use. Six months later, I still haven't figured out what they all are. All the important buttons that actually play the DVD are in white. If you switch to TV, you can turn the sound up and down and channel surf with the blue buttons. Other than mute and video, I've never touched the gray buttons, and frankly don't understand why there are so many. On the other hand, I've bought more DVD player than I need, so it's not that surprising that the buttons are a little daunting. I have a JVC television (which I've reviewed some years ago), and that colored my decision to buy it somewhat. It ended up being a choice between the Panasonic and JVC, but ultimately, all other things being equal, I bought it for its looks. Being JVC, I knew it would be a quality device, and a delightful result of my decision is that it is already programmed to work with my three-year-old JVC 20" TV! I didn't have to program it or anything. I could have bought a ridiculously low-priced machine from APEX, but I'm old school and I don't like buying things figuring I'm just going to toss it later. I buy quality and I expect it to last. So far, the XV-N40BK is just what I need. If, heaven forbid, I'm ever crazy enough to spend more on a TV than I do my car, then the machine will be ready, since it is already progressive-scan. I don't know what progressive-scan is, and I cannot use that feature anyway. You don't have to use it to use the machine. Part of me wanted to wait for DVD recorders to get real cheap, because I have a lot of videotaped TV shows I'd like to convert. Well, I figured why wait for what could be years down the road, when you can enjoy DVDs now. Tomorrow isn't promised to anybody! And I was a die-hard convert, too. I didn't jump on the DVD bandwagon; I had to be thrown! But I'm glad I made the move. I love the fact that you get extra stuff besides the movie on the DVD; audio commentaries are the best thing since movies started talking, in my opinion. And when you pause the DVD, it's perfectly still and will stay that way forever until you un-pause it. (My VCR only paused for 3 minutes, and you had some flicker with it.) So, all in all, I think I've made a great decision on two counts: one, jumping on the DVD bandwagon (and if you rent you never really have to own any...no more bulky tapes! Imagine the storage space you save...); and two, choosing the JVC XV-N40BK, a beautiful little black machine that says hello to you when it's activated and shows every indication that it's going to be around a long time.
- I have had this JVC unit now for about two weeks. It replaced my aging high-end, at the time, Toshiba which was having trouble playing DVD-R's CD-R's etc. I am very impressed by this unit. It plays any disc I put into it, including MP3's - a big plus.
The picture and sound are outstanding. I use it soley in 480P and it is jaw dropping on my 65" HDTV. A really happy customer.
- I got this player new for around $100. It matches my Sony receiver just right and is awesome for music CDs and DVDs. I also read that it was the top-rated Consumer Reports DVD player.
The picture and sound quality so far have been superb with it hooked up through component. However, I have seen the stuttering problem occur on this player in panning scenes, but it only happens if I start pause the movie a lot. I can play movies from start to finish and pause a couple of times and never see it stutter. Another thing is that I have never seen the 4:3 PS mode work to stretch a widescreen movie to fit the whole screen. Isn't that what it's supposed to do on some DVDs (if any)? It does read all kinds of discs and supports Pro Scan too. I really like how any disc will begin to play after only 2-3 seconds on this player. Coax and Optical audio outs are also a definite plus. I recommend this as an excellent DVD/CD player.
- Picked up a refurbished model from eCost for under $50. Plays my Nero-burned VCDs with no problem, and more importantly to me, it has built-in PAL-NTSC conversion. The remote might not be the easiest to use, but given the dirt cheap price, I am quite satisfied.
- This is a great machine. I upgraded from an older Apex player and I'm glad I did. I immediately noticed much improved audio and the video is great too using the component connections. So far it has played every format I've tried, with no problems...DVD, CD, CD-R, MP3, and JPEG. One of my major complaints with my old player was that it took forever to load a disc, whether DVD or CD. This unit loads them up quickly.
I've read some complaints about this player being light and cheaply made. It is a pretty slim machine, but come on, it just sits there! How rough can you be with a piece of electronics? One last feature I like is the remote. I can easily switch control back and forth between my JVC TV and DVD player. The buttons are well placed and easy to follow. I'm still looking for some negatives with this player, but have not found any yet. If you don't need a 5-disc changer, then buy this model now.

- I picked two of these up for 60.00 each. I was nervous but no longer, the sound is FABULOUS, the screen is clear and colorful. I think it was worth EVERY PENNY. What a fantastic deal!
- Yes, this is one of those "no-name brands" that people are always warning you never to buy. I didn't buy mine, though - received it from a friend as a Christmas gift - and couldn't be happier with it. For a no-name brand, the picture quality is excellent! Like others have said, the audio isn't all that loud, but it's decent enough so that you don't have to strain to hear on the speakers, and it's a lot better through earphones.
At first, I had trouble figuring out how to charge the battery pack; I thought it had to be charged while the AC adapter was connected to the player, but finally figured out that the pack is charged alone. After that little mishap, I had no other problems with it. I'm not sure how much my friend paid for it, but it was well worth the price. It came with a lot of neat accessories too!
- I bought one of these and it worked well for about a month(if that). Now I can't use it because everytime it has lines across the screen and it stops working. A piece of junk! Save your money!
- I bought a Spectroniq dvd player so I could let my kids enjoy their movies both in the car on trips and in the house so there would be less fighting at movie time. Well, it worked "ok" from Nov until today, then it just stopped working. Wouldn't even turn on. Customer service just told me that there was a 90 day warranty on it and after that I would have to have it checked out by a serviceman. For my money and I hope yours, I will not buy another product from this company.
- I got this DVD player during an after Thanksgiving sale for around 60 dollars. I thought it was a great deal for a portable DVD player. We bought it to use on long car trips for the kids to watch movies. I thought it was fine initially, I didn't really notice any problem with the volume. However, after using it on approx 5 car trips, it will now only work if we use a piece of duct tape to hold the lid down over the DVD. Some sensor went bad and even if the lid is closed it still says it's open. Some might wonder why I didn't call customer service for help. Therein lies the main reason I give this product 1 Star -- NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. I tried the number in the manual - I get a recording that the number is not in service. I looked up Spectroniq's website and tried that number also got the same message no service. I will never buy a product by this company again, and I feel really bad for people who bought expensive products from them.

- I got this to transfer VHS to DVD. I was going to use S-Video output for the video portion. Despite the specs on this website indicating that there is one there is no such output jack. I'm thinking of returning it.
- my JVC HRXVC15S arrived with a factory defect--a LOUD 60cycle hum via the VHS side. i called VANNS, the seller, and they said call JVC (never going to buy anything from VANNS again...), called JVC and described the problem, they asked a couple of questions that makes me believe that the problem is a known defect, tell me to ship it to them and, no, they don't pay the shpping. so.......never by another JVC product again....
so, i'll try and sell the thing as a DVD player (no hum from that side) for $25 and shop for another (non-JVC) unit.
- I recommend buyers look at the Amazon reviews for defunct JVC VHS/DVD
dual deck products before they purchase any current dual deck model.
They have a proven history of extremely poor build quality. JVC keeps
rapidly changing model numbers, which makes this more difficult for
the consumer to discover. However they all look very similar with
only slight cosmetic differences.

- Someone wrote the new model only runs 1 hour longer than the previous model and no memory slot, I don't care about the memory slot but battery life, thats a huge deal if you like long movies.
Another says it dosen't remember where you left off, mine does. My Panasonic which is being replaced by this one remembered only on certain discs where the L200 has no problems like that. Another writes that they have to go through all kinds of button pushes to get rid of the closed captioning or sub titles, If you look at the remote there's a button for subtitle on it. Just click it and select no. Yeah there should be a option to disable CC besides the disc menu. Won't remember your 4X3 screen settings? just hit the EZ View button and it automatically sets up the proper screen setup for widescreen and pan scan programming. I would give it 5 stars but there is no brightness or contrast control, even though it has a excellent picture I still want to tweak the image.
- i was sent to iraq for 10 months and this is the best thing to have. people complained that it's too big and that they might as well get a laptop. well i got back from iraq and it's perfect for the children in the back seat. i bought this instead of a laptop because i don't want to deal with the problems a laptop will bring in the future.
- This is one of those DVD players with big screens. The screen is the perfect size, and is very thin. The remote is easy to use. It also has the ability to play Cd's of different formats.
It also kind of looks like a sharper image portable stereo. only, it's a DVD. Sharper image sells it. It has one of the biggest screens, so it's very easy to use, therfore making it a easy view DVD player. With these great features, This is one of The best DVD players on the market.
- Great picture and sound! I was worried about it being to big but its great. The big screen great, especially if multiple people are watching it. Good for long car trips and great for planes to because of the lengthy battery time. Thin and sleek and exactly what I was looking. I would recomend this DVD to anybody.
- The samsung 10" player is a wonderful device, although it does tend to have a short battery life. The sound of the player is rich and full. I wanted to use the player in my car (not for me, for my passengers) but still haven't been able to find a DC adapter. The battery life is ok, so for shorter trips it works. I paid full price for mine, but recently found that it was being offered for free as part of a referral service at http://www.pvps4free.com/default.aspx?r=120107 - No matter how you get this player it is definitely a quality item.

- Even with the user reviews telling of less than 12 hours of battery time (as advertised) I expected maybe 2/3 of the 12 hours, but nope, I get 4.5 hours max. I do use highest brightness and color, but if you are buying just for battery life, save your money. Other than that, it's a nice product.
I wonder what the actual battery time is for brands that advertise 6 hours of battery life?
- I ordered the LS82 DVD player based on the reviews I saw here. I really wanted the 12 hour battery so that was a strong point. I use the player mostly to play videos that I record from the TV when I am traveling to work on the bus. I have about an hour drive so that works well with one hour programs. I must say I am very happy with my purchase. The price was the best I had seen anywhere and was a bargain with the free shipping. The video quality is obviously not as good as on the TV but it is quite acceptable considering the size of the player. I have now had the player for about a month now and use it 2 to 3 times a week. So far it has been a great investment. I highly recommend it.
- The Panasonic DVD-LS-82 8.5" portable DVD player with headrest kit was a value-plus purchase. Besides getting it at a very reduced price for under $200, the 12hr battery life was a key factor in the purchasing decision since we intended to use it during car trips and airline flights. Strongly recomend.
- I purchased a Panasonic LX9 portable dvd player in 2004 for over $800. Until recently I was quite satisfied with it. However, the detachable battery just went bad and needs replacing. Panasonic has discontinued making the battery. Without it, my dvd player no longer works. So, my expensive investment is now quite useless. All Panasonic is prepared to do is give a small discount to buy a new but much inferior model. So, MY ADVICE IS : DON'T BUY PANASONIC - AS YOU'LL NEVER KNOW IF THE BATTERY CAN BE REPLACED.
- The product was delivered fast and in perfect condition. It was brand new with all its accessories.
I was very satisfied and the price was much cheaper than in stores.
