  1. We are now on our second unit in 2 weeks and this one is going back too. First one starting grabbing up tapes within the first few days. After 2 ruined tapes I sent for a replacment. We have had it 6 days and the tapes are making a clicking sound when playing and the sound is distorted. It is doing it on both old and newer tapes. It will play for a few minutes then turn itself off completely. Only good thing to say is that the DVD side has not given us problems yet.

  2. I bought this device two frustrating months ago. It is ok when it works but that is usually not the case. The instructions are awful. The ability to record is awful. I don;t know anyone I hate enough to give them this machine.

  3. This unit is worse that the old VCR it replaced. The CD player works all right but the VCR is terrible. The sound is wobbly for the first ten minutes of each program. The horizontal sync jumps and caries on for the first five minutes. Any time the tape is stopped it starts jumping all over again. Any frame adjustment has to be redone whenever the power is turned off. Not worth the aggravation.

  4. Terribly designed remote. VCR player got noisy after a few months of light usage. Slow DVD. Remote stopped working. Into the dumpster.

  5. The product worked well for 10 months and now I can't hear voice whenever I put VHS tape.. I tried to clean it up and but no luck.. very cheap make and worth is for $60... thanks

5 comments about Initial DVD-9510 Portable DVD Player with 4-Inch Screen.
  1. I bought this product almost 1 year ago. It was doing a great job for the first 6 months then I started having problems. I found out that you can not extend the car adapter to the back seat without it messing up the connection. However, that is why I bought it. I think it would be against the law for me to watch TV while I was driving. My kids sit in the back seat and they are the ones going to watch it. Initial needs to state this on their box if it is not intended for that use. It is a good DVD to hook up stationary to the TV but for portable use the battery back is a pain to keep attached. I would reccommend spending your money on a better brand. But research it!

  2. I have read all reviews and a lot of people have said that the product is bad because of its small screen. Well, the screen size is something you are aware of when you bought it. Even if you bought it online, the screen size is still listed, and you can get a ruler to see how big it would be. So I dont know how you can fault the machine for that. As far as it being pixelated, any small screen is gonna be pixelated unless it is a plasma screen, which would not be cheap. Secondly, many people say the battery is ugly and that it is an external. It is an external battery, true, but an internal battery would cost more and make the machine a lot bigger. While the battery may not make the player win any awards for style, unless you are buying it to show at competition, this really isn't a factor. I dont think your kids in the back seat would say "Daddy, i dont want to watch a movie, the battery is ugly." I have never had trouble playing any DVD's, there have been times a dvd wouldn't play, but it was because the dvd was smudged or had a finger print. All dvd players are finicky, and will not play if that is the case. The sound is very good, for the size of the speakers. I have had no trouble with the battery staying on and it does not feel like it is going to break off. But as with any electronic product, take care of it, if you drop it, it wont last long. As far as the "external cable" that connects the player to the battery, It is a whopping 2 inches long. As far as the power cord not stretching to the back seat, it does fine in my car. Of course it may not do so in a minivan or limousine that is longer, but your average 2 or 4 door you should have no problem. Thats why they dont have a warning label saying "The car adapter cord will not stretch to back seat", because all cars are DIFFERENT! I have had it for about 9 months now, no problems. If you are looking for a portable DVD player, that doesn't cost you a lot of money, this is a great option. If you dont like a small screen, dont get this model, get one with a bigger screen. If you need subtitles, dont even get a portable dvd player because sub titles do not work well on any of them. If your worried about it breaking, buy it at Wal-Mart, they return anything, just keep your reciept.

  3. This portable DVD is great it not only comes with everything you need (AC Adapter, Car Adapter, Battery), but has a great support of formats and content in both DVD and CD.

First of all it plays all brands of DVD (DVD-R, DVD+R and their +-RW flawors) and CD (CD-R, CD-RW, CD pressed). It can read mp3 saved in CD or DVD (Meaning a whopping 84 hours per disc), it supports a path with more than two levels, reads mpg1 and mpg2 files saved on both types of discs (DVD or CD), supports JPG files (It even have a thumbnail menu), and above all this examples it supports VCD and SVCD (Even multiple audio!!!), so this unit rocks.

I have seen other players with better or bigger screen, but if you ask me, i prefer this because it can even play a guitar (well , no a guitar, but with all it plays the guitar is the only missing), hey, it play even things that my set top doesn't... So if you find it buy it !.

  4. I purchased this DVD player at Walmart... Almost immediately it began to fail. The DVD would play, but the backlight on the TFT display would fail to illuminate the screen. If you would tap the display it would come back, but only for a few minutes. I do not recommend this product dispite the price. You will only need to immediately return it or purchase another one

  5. Try a more popular brand with accessories that can be easily replaced from your local electronic store. Their accessories fail frequently and are expensive to replace through the company, yet the company is the only place to purchase them. I really rate this "0" stars!!

  1. Ever since I discovered this player in the summer of 2005, I have been highly impressed with how much it met both my normal and oddball demands. As a student of Musical Theatre, Opera, Classical vocal and choral literature, and Jazz and Classical piano, DVD-AUDIO and SACD capabilities are of great importance to me because there are a lot of titles especially in the Classical genre available in these formats. One thing that sets this player apart from the other manufacturers' players is Yamaha's CD UpSampling feature. For those titles which are currently only available on CD and possibly will never be released on DVD-AUDIO and/or SACD, this option converts standard CDs to the quality of DVD-AUDIO. On the Musical Theatre, Opera, and choral side of things, this player is capable of playing both NTSC (North American) and PAL (European) DVDs on corresponding as well as opposite TVs. For certain titles in these genres, the North American editions are either four percent slower in tempo and picture movement and flatter in pitch than the European editions due to the method of PAL-to-NTSC conversion used by the distributors of such DVDs, or do not include as many bonus features as their original European counterparts. Sometimes, it can be the other way around, except the European editions might be four percent faster and sharper and have less bonus material than their original North American counterparts. On both ends of the spectrum, if the audio pitch is corrected without changing the audio speed to keep the picture and sound in synch, a subaudible breaking-up effect may be noticed as the result of slight artifacts from slightly bending or stretching the pitch in the conversion process. However, because of this player's bicompatibility with both color systems, I have the freedom to choose and purchase whatever editions are the best. Although it is not in the manual, this player can be made multi-region compatible including RCE DVDs. Turn on the DVD player. Make sure there are no discs loaded. With the tray open, using its supplied remote control, slowly press 99990. Wait for the 'Region 0' message to disappear. Close the tray. Now you can play any kind of optical disc without thinking about it. The only little flaw with this player's firmware is that when the 'All Discs' repeat mode is selected, when playing DVDs, after playing through all the titles, instead of moving on to the next disc, it returns to the home menu. If Yamaha could do a minor revision to the firmware which engages that same menu bipass as when repeating a single DVD, the machine would change DVDs automatically. I discovered this by reauthoring DVDs without any of their menus using DVD Shrink Version 3.2. In conclusion, if you are looking for a DVD player with one hundred percent compatibility all across the board, you have come to the right place!* *Others have reported problems playing 'Dual Discs'--a type of disc which includes DVD-VIDEO on one side or layer, and CD DIGITAL AUDIO on another, also known as 'Hybrids.' However, big names, such as Panasonic, Sony, and Pioneer, do not recommend using these discs in their players. This is not to be confused with 'Hybrid' type SACDs, which many, including the Yamaha DVDC950 will support.

  2. This is a really good lookin unit and so far has worked flawlessly. To start, the remote is not much of one, but it works.Kinda cheap, even cheap looking. If you want to load or begin on a specific disc you have to press the same button on the romote repeatedly, and when you go to load all 5 discs two of the slots only come out half way but, when you want to change a disc or two while one is playing that is the only slot that dose not come fully out.One thing I really like is the tray does not rotate when you open it everytime like some units. And, as far as I can figure there is no way to scroll the text after the initial scroll.Plus, it seems that the text on tv screen is limited to just a few letters. The unit upconverts the picture to 1080i to match my Hitachi and I have to say its a gorgeous picture.I went from a Kenwood DV5700 that had the DCDI chip on it, and it had a gorgeous progressive scan picture and the fact that this unit had the chip was a major selling point, little did I know hooking up via HDMI/DVI to the tv it bypasses the DCDI chip.I wont be missing it,the picture is that sweet. The unit has several picture adjustments that I havent felt the need to play with yet.But nice to know they are there. The fact this is a universal player was the biggest selling point for me, and so far it had played everything I have threw at it,dvdr's,vcd's, cd's, mp3's, dvd-audio's,dual disc's,etc.I havent tried sacd's yet, but give me time.I really dont care for the orange lettering and numbering on the display. I wish I could change the colors but no big deal.Overall I wouldn't hesitate in buying this unit again. The few minor complaints are just that, minor gripes about things this player dosent do that I have had on other players that I liked.

  3. EDIT: Get the new dvd-c961 instead. There are many improvements, including putting the SACD audio on the hdmi output (need an hdmi 1.2a or 1.3 receiver to use this feature).

I upgraded to this after having the DVD-C6760, because I wanted the DVD-Audio and HDMI support. As well as getting those features, I find that the picture is also better (even on component video) and the response time is much faster than the older player. This works great with both SACD and DVD-Audio. Also, it's built really solidly -- not some lightweight crap.

    - Usage Notes: it doesn't have iLink output, so you will ONLY get SACD/DVD-A multichannel audio if you connect up the six analog audio cables, even if you (like I) normally use the optical or RF digital output. This is the same for all SACD and DVD-A players that don't have the high-end output (e.g. see the Yamaha DVD-S2500). Also, if you want to use the resume feature, you have to hit the "play" key while it still says "loading disk xx" on the screen.

EDIT: I successfully played a region 2 PAL format DVD on this (with a standard US TV). This player really does it all! (region-free hack is available by googling a bit).

  1. This player basically automatically fast forwards the movie for you so you can avoid all the bad scenes (eg. sex, violence, gore, etc.) without really noticing it doing anything different. It's like the bad scenes never existed.

It's a great, wonderful, and super technology that I wish I had thought of years ago.

However, if you buy this player, it will come with several DVD "Filters" so that you can watch many movies filtered. BUT, say a new movie comes out like Karate Kid 43 and you don't want to see the bad parts, you will have to buy the filter for that movie from ClearPlay for a little more. That goes for every movie you buy that comes out after the CD was burned for your player. That, or you can buy a whole year from them for about $80.

If you want to avoid this extra fee for at least a year, visit http://www.ClearPlayDVD.com and order the player directly from Clearplay. It might cost a little bit more for the player but you get a years worth of filters for free and you'll be glad you have them when it comes to watch a movie you just bought or rented.

  2. Clearplay is the best thing on the market for edited movies. I love it!
You can choose to what level you want to watch the movie edited and not alter the actual DVD! And it's Legal. Go to www.clearplay.com and use the PROMO CODE: "bvest" to get FREE shipping and 15 dollars off the 3 year membership! This is the best deal out there! Get one today!

  3. Never written a negative review, but this is one time I think I have to. The programming files you download from the Clear Play site did not always work for me. When I called to cancel, I got a recorded message stating they have my number and will call me back. No call back, even after repeated calls. Then tried email. No response. In the end I had to cancel my credit card so they would stop taking the monthly service fee. I know as a parent we want to protect our kids from objectionable material in films, but unfortunately this is just not the service to use. I am going to write the Better Business Bureau to let them know of this company's business practices. Buyer Beware!

5 comments about Panasonic DMR-ES20S DVD Recorder Silver.
  1. I bought this unit late in 2005. I really put it to heavy use, converting my VHS library, and burning a lot of other stuff to DVD. Before it finally broke down, it began to make audible noises whenever it was powered up, it also began to freeze up often, and had to be rebooted. A couple of days ago, it threw an error, after failing to read a previously burned DVD. It froze up, and had to be rebooted. After restarting, I now get a fuzzy split screen image, instead of my normal satellite TV images. It appears the units primary video outputs have been fried. This unit has some good features like ease of use, and "flexible recording". This allows you to automatically record programs over 2hrs., at the best mode, on a single DVD. If you're looking for a heavy use DVD recording unit, this is not the one!

  2. Worked great for the first few months. Then random freezes started popping up. Now it freezes every 5 minutes while recording to DVD-RAM or DVD-RW. I now save every 2 to 3 minutes while transferring video from my camcorder.

Picture quality, even on the component outputs, was poor from day 1. So I record on this, then play on my Toshiba SD9200.

Panasonic has some great products, this is definitely not one of them. In fact, today I visited their website to check for firmware updates for this model, and saw that the webpage is a mess too. I select the DMR-ES20.EXE file for download, and after accepting the Lic agreement, am provided the DMR-E100.EXE for download !!!! That is scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as support goes Panasonic..wake up !!

  3. I have had this for over year now. I just love it. I wouldn't know what to do with out it now. I have recorded so many tv shows & movies with it. I have recorded every one of my favorite TV shows, so when I go to the lake where my travel trailer is set up I can catch up on my shows at night or when its raining. It is easy to use & set up. You do have to buy the right kind of dvds (DVD-R) so you can finalze & use on the other dvds.

  4. It is my opinion one star is really about two too many but they made me do it. I have two of these Panasonic crazy makers. An ES-20 and an ES-10. I've fought with both of them and missed numerous recordings over the last two and three years respectively. The absolute worst part is when they pretend to be recording and then crash at the end of the program. I bought the ES-20 when the ES-10 died and was sent it off for repair. I guess that equates to shooting myself in both feet. They have both been nothing but trouble. They are extremely tempermental. In fact, the ES-10 just quit recognizing the DVDRAM, grunts, groans displays self check, and refuses to open. Bottom line, I think this week I'm either going Tivo or Cable DVR. Maybe I can use these "dvd recorders" as wheel chocks.

  5. We had this product long enough for the warranty to expire, which is about the same time it stopped working, except for the clock. We missed a lot of shows because this thing would randomly malfunction, sometimes working great, sometimes freezing up completely so that the only way to reset it was to unplug and start over. I've had good experience with Panasonic in the past, so this was an unpleasant surprise. Luckily, our credit card covered the purchase so now we can buy another product, from another company of course.

This market is way too competitive for low quality mess like this. Don't waste your money.

5 comments about Panasonic DMR-EH55S DVD Recorder with 200 GB Hard Drive, HDMI, SD Card, and DV Input.
  1. I was successful in downloading the TV Guide, although last minute broadcasting changes will not be updated. You must use input 3 and have the dvd recorder parameters set-up for your satellite box. No, you cannot use HD receivers but I was able to connect with a standard DirecTV TiVo unit. I also have the DMR E55H controlling the channels on my DirecTV TiVo unit from the scheduling as well as direct channel access. The TiVO unit must remain on at all times!

  2. Easy to setup. Easy to use. Reduced my cable bill by $27.00 a month. And to top it off, when used when an HDMI cable to your HDTV, it upscales to 1080i. You'll notice things in movies you never noticed before. And the audio output is second to none. DVD movies and TV are a whole new experience. Well worth the money. I'm extremely happy with the DMR-EH55. There's not a better unit out there. In fact I own 2 of them.

  3. This is a great product, but it does have a few glitches.

I love the huge hard drive, no worrying if you have enough space on the dvd/disc for recording all your shows.

Easy to set up for recording if you set it to download the programming from your provider.

Mine makes an error on my channel lineup, it downloads the wrong channel for my location. I get details for a shopping channel not the actual available programming, but this, luckily is a channel I don't watch.

Also several channels are downloaded with times from the wrong time zone, rebooting or clearing and downloading programming again does not correct the problem. This is frustrating as setting up a timed recording is more time consuming to do than just clicking on the show in the line up.

My cable box shows the correct lineup and times of shows.

It also occasionally will record the wrong channel. Two minutes before recording starts the system selects the channel it will record, then again as it starts recording it will reselect the channel. Many times at this second selection it chooses the wrong channel ( 2 instead of 12 for example). This can be frustrating. It cannot be the infra red you set by the cable box being in the wrong location or it would not have selected the correct channel first time around. You see the correct channel momentarily, then it changes to the wrong one.

Sometimes, it just does not to record the show at all, and gives an error message of "Recording was stopped by the system. Reason: Error has occured / stopped recording".

This recording of the wrong channel and / or no recording has been very frustrating at times.

Overall, I do like the item.

  4. I've been a fan of DVD-RAMs for 4 yrs. I have hundreds of them and record hrs ea. day. I haven't had a failed recording nor problem of any kind. 4 yrs of disks and no failures is something I can live with. Panasonics are the main DVD-RAM recorders available.

Thus my interest in this discontinued product.

If you view video recording as a disposable medium, you'll love the DMR-EH55. I record hrs while I'm at work, then can easily edit titles. I mainly work with my own video recorder titles and cable TV recordings. If I want to eliminate commercials or edit my own video, DVD-RAM or HDD recording works great.

I can't argue with those who want the highest video quality and aren't happy with this recorder. But for an easy to use, program, and review videos product, this one is excellent. TV Guide Online gives me more program listings than my cable company's deficient Onscreen Guide which barely exceeds 24 hrs of program listings.

This year I've returned three modern Panaonic DVD recorders before I got this older model. It seemed as if Panasonic fired all there good programmers. The newer models were complete crap compared to this model- no unusual delays, no buggy operations. This recorder is the real deal for me.

  5. Love it ! This has a great tv-guide feature but the only draw back is it only goes a week in advance. so if you go on a 2 week vacation you may miss a thing or two. You can make your recordings daily, weekly,or monthly which I thought was a nice feature! You can edit anything you record so if you record a show or movie you can edit the commercials out! I found the best way if you are particular like me you can pause it just before the commercial or after then rewind or forward (in pause) to a black screen to start or end your edit! This took me a few tries before they were faded well. Then of course you can put it on a dvd! The best feature is you can record anything then edit it or not, then put it on a dvd for a friend or your collection! All in all this is a great item!

  1. Am happy with everything about this player except that for the money spent, I would have expected better support for DVD+R DVD-R media. Granted, that feature isn't listed in the technical description, so the mistake is mine.

  2. Bought this DVD for my husband for father's day and it has turned out to be a mixed blessing. He loves it and watches DVDs till all hours. The unit works perfectly, the screen excellent for his over 75 eyes, and we are well satisfied!

  3. In the five months since we purchased this DVD player it has been on one month-long overseas vacation, several long car trips and has had one 3' fall off a hotel bed. Our preschoolers provide it with general abuse on a regular basis. So far we have not had a single problem, not even after the fall off the bed.

Our main reason for purchasing this player was to watch DVD movies, and for that purpose it is excellent. The DVDs do not skip. The picture and sound qualities are great, and there is also great sound when using headphones.

While overseas we tried to view digital photographs off a DVD, and the results were very poor. This is definitely NOT the player for that.

However, for our intended purpose, we can highly recommend this player. We would buy it again in a heartbeat.

  4. Picture is great, sound is lousy unless hooked up to H-phones or other sound equipment...The Lid/DVD door was (at first) slightly warped but as time went by it seems to have flattened out.... it had no effect on the unit's playing ability so I didn't return it..I thought the unit could have been less expensive........

  5. I've had this product a little under a year. The dvd is working properly, but the tv has stop working, What could be the problem.Product#PL510T.

  1. Pros:
    ----
    * You get a 10 inch 800*480 resolution screen, a bag and two headphones for the money.

    * The player is very compact. It is as big as it needs to be to contain the screen and no bigger.

    * The battery is external which means you can get an additional battery, if you can find one.

    * The player supports PAL format DVDs and has a region free hack available. (See other review).

    Cons:
    ----

    * I did a side by side comparison with this player and the Philips PET1030. By comparison, the Audiovox has pale colors and a less sharp screen.

    * No portable DVD has good audio quality using the built in speakers. The Audiovox has average built in speakers, beating the Sony FX820 (which I also tried and sent back), but not as good as the PET1030.

    * Sound quality using good quality Headphones was very disappointing.

    * Battery life is suspect. Other reviewers have already commented on this. I was not able to test this as my battery was bad and lasted all of 15 minutes on a full charge. This made this purchase an automatic return.

    * No proper bookmark or position memory. If you turn the player off and on again, your DVD will start from the beginning. The instructions do claim to have this feature, but this is what you have to do to use it. 1) Switch the DVD player to auxiliary input (this turns of the DVD rotation). 2) Close the lid (This turns off the DVD display). Note that the player is still using some battery in this mode and is not truly off.

    * Some features, such as picture settings are only available using the remote. Not available using the controls on the player.

    Conclusion:
    -----------

    * Worth considering if you want something cheep for the kids in the back of the car.

    * No worth considering if you want the best quality picture and sound.
