- One thing to remember about this player is that it is one of very few that is an multi-disk changer of high quality that will play SACD, DVD-A, and DVD discs. As a result, if you are an audiphile that has those high quality disks, this is a rare machine that plays all of them.

5 comments about Panasonic DMR-ES35VS DVD Recorder / VCR Combo with DV Input.
- Hi,
I read good reviews about the Panasonic DMR-ES35VS DVD Recorder VCR combo, and they turned out to be true. It works great and it was fairly simple to learn how to use it. It is easy to use once you've read the documentation and done it just a couple of times.
The best part for me is being free of VHS
- Was formatting a disk yesterday to record the UH vs Boise game, the machine completely freezes up. Remote doesn't work, even the inputs on the machine itself don't work!!! Was gonna give it a dumpster ride, called Radio Shack, first question out of them was "Did you buy the extended warranty?", evidently I'm a few weeks past one year. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone, wish the US would start manufacturing electronic goods again, I'ld gladly pay the extra money if the quality was there....
- Very well satisfied with this Panasonic Combo Dvd Player & burner. Simple to transfer VHS to DVD-- Easy one button recording fron video-- Excellent manual.
- Bought this product to transfer personal videos to DVD. Easy to operate and have been successful thus far with the transfer.
- I'm a videophile, I have well over 1000 original Hollywood movies as well as home made footage and video that I shot professionally. So I bought a couple machines last year to do the onerous task of transferring video to DVD. This is no fun if you have a lot of material.
The Panasonics have a significantly better video player than the others. This is highly important, especially if your original is less than ideal.
I did have a machine quit but I was about done and it was bought as 'remanufactured' so I don't know its history.
The Panasonic is quite a bit better than the Samsung and the GO Video machines I used previously.

5 comments about Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player.
- product arrived quickly and in great condition for hundreds less than their competitors. will definatly buy from again
- This player worked just fine for me "out of the box". Coupled with my HD TV (not flat screen or Plasma) it is terrific. Only thing is I am afraid for the money, that the HD Format is going the way of the old Beta. No one has been able to tell me if in the future Blu-Ray will be the only HD format sold on DVD's. I would check this out before I spent the money on this one. If HD is available for sure, this product is sincerely great.

- I have 2 of these, one a backup and one I use in our bedroom with a 50" Panasonic Plasma and Onkyo sound. Although some discs had trouble with this player, and I had to outsmart it with a few tricks (yes the old scum remover with dishwashing liquid, because the laser supposedly was more sensitive to any kind of residue left on discs by production process), I've been very happy with its performance. Upscaling is satisfactory. It does a better job than my 80GB PS3, and my Panasonic BD30K used in the livingroom. I paid under $300 for each player, and they were some of the best investments I've made in entertainment hardware. Firmware updates are easy and I receive discs when they are needed (signed up when I registered the player). Great product!
- I understand that the format war is over and that HD DVD is "dead" but I that doesn't keep me from loving this machine. I bought it for a great price (under $150) on ebay and I have no regretted it. I also have a PS3 and Toshiba A-2 and I have to say that it is right up there with the both of them and even exceeds them in a few areas. The fact that it can bitstream the HD audio is fantastic and even the PS3 (which I also love) can't do that. It's a great upscaler and it's nice that Toshiba is still doing the firmware updates for their defunct products. Currently I am snatching up as many HD DVDS as I can for dirt cheap. Since I have two HD DVD players (one upstairs and downstairs) I can watch them anywhere in the house. As far as picture and audio quality, it is an equal for any of the blu-ray movies I have (and their waaaay cheaper). I would encourage anyone with and HD DVD player of any kind to look at the bargain sites for these cheap movies in high def. You won't be disappointed.
- Got this Toshiba HD-A35 player for my 21st birthday on march 20 2008 (upgrading form Xbox 360 add on). Great picture and bitstream audio capability + hd sound decoding (dtshdma core only) abilty makes this player a perfect fit for any hometheater. start up is a little slow next to my panasonic blu-ray player. however I am still very happy with this player and the qulity it delivers. DVD upscaling is far beter them my dmp bd30 player, but still upscaling is still no match for hd movies with good transfers. And to top it all off I got this HDMI 1.3 audio bitstream 1080p/24 capable player for $239.77 new and free shiping.

- I received this unit from Panasonic after another Panasonic DVD recorder broke down after six months. I have had it for three weeks and now the eject button does not work. Panasonic wants me to send it in for repairs. My advice, after many years as a loyal Panasonic customer, is to at least avoid their DVD recorders. Their customer service department is as unreliable as their products. Perhaps Panasonic is slipping in quality overall.
- Got off to a good start with this unit, mainly got it to replace my old Panasonic DVD player that had stopped working after 5+ years, figured I might as well get a recorder. I hooked it up, and it easily tuned in all my cable TV channels, was able to get the remote to also control my TV. But then I was watching a regular, commercial DVD this morning, and midway through the show, it inexplicably froze.
I ejected the disc, power-cycled, and even unplugged it, and I even tried the "freeze" reset suggested in the manual. After all these resets, it would still not play ANY disc I put in it. I get a "No Read" error. I never even got a chance to try out all the recording features. And this happened on the first day. Seems to me like it has a lot of nice features, but is way too delicate and easy to break. I guess you get what you pay for, cheaply-made electronics that are neither durable nor reliable. I'm returning this and replacing with something else.
- I bought this unit as a replacement for my previous Panasonic recorder that had stopped recording. I was very happy to see that the learning curve was almost non-existant as many of the controls were similiar or exactly the same. I was also happy to have something that worked so easily without problems. I like the slimness of this model too. It has to fit on top of my old VCR and TV and it does perfectly.
- Was hoping someone could help me out... I live in the Philippines and would like to purchase this to record some educational shows from the Discovery Channel and National Geo that my children miss while they are at school. I'm not knowledgeable with regards this matter. Would this electronic work just the same in the Philippines?
- This item is great, if you don't mind losing many of your recordings because the darn thing froze up. I've had this unit for a while now and it keeps freezing up...IT FREEZES UP ALL THE TIME - 5 or more times per week...I lose recordings already made on a disc, scheduled recordings don't record and I have to reset all my programs. I can't believe this unit sucks so badly...I can't believe I haven't thrown it in the junk pile yet...step away...step away from this unit...!!!!

5 comments about Philips PET710 7-Inch Widescreen Portable DVD Player.
- I bought this product in March. The battery pack is indeed strange and large. The screen has stopped working after 3.5 months. It didnt work last night but worked this morning. I contacted WorldWide distrubtors and was told to call phillips directly because they do not have any of this product left.
My irritations begin!
- This is now my 3rd Phillips, Portable DVD Player in about 2 years. For some reason they have all either just stopped spinning or rufuse to power up at all (the last two). I purchased all of them at Walmart, for around $150. While the screen is nice and has a great picture, I do not recommend it. It breaks way too easily- and for no aparent reason. Before you guys go thinking I'm a descruction machine- I've had the same ipod and blackberry (which I use everyday) for almost three years! Save yourself the frustration of having to fix something out of warranty. Just buy another brand!
- I was so please with this one, I bought 2 more, from Wallmart, and gave them as gifts, for use in another country. Reason: besides it's quality, price, ease of use, reliability, it has the extra important features of also being able to play PAL dvds (also CD's), and both it and the charger, work, just fine, off the crummy electricity of different voltages and hertzes, of the country in question. I was there, and tested it thoroughly for 2 weeks and it never even blipped once. The screen, can be swivled, tilted, just and clear, except in bright light, and the speakers are not good,if a lot of background noise. Understandable and forgiveable downsides. I wish the battery would last a bit longer. oh well. nothing perfect. It also has TWO headphone jacks, and if used with noise supression headphones, it's a champ!
The battery does charge pretty fast though.
I loved it! I regret to say, they've "improved" it, with a higher price, with features I have no interest in, in the newer models. They fixed something that wasn't broke. Sigh.
- We actually purchased this DVD player about 2 years ago for my 5 year-old-son. I can personally vouch for its DURABILITY!!
My son takes it with him in the car and we take it when we go out to eat(he watches when he is done and we get to peacfully finish our meals). It has had root beer spilled on it and despite a sticky hinge it still plays just fine.
The only complaint we have is the battery. THis is the only reason I do not give it 5 stars. It protrudes out the back making it impossible to put in a carry case.(especially one for the car that attached to the back of the headrest). NO case comes with the player becasue they probably cannot make one that would accomodate the battery. The battery initially lasted for nearly 3 hours, but after repeated use (and I mean repeated) the battery life is clearly depleating- good luck finding a replacement... Our battery is also broke due a fall from the the table (remember that durability). The DVD player survived, but the small plastic notches that hold the battery in place broke off- so our battery is held on woth duct tape- and it still works!!
Bottom line- this is a great product as far as reliablity and durability for the children.
If I am not able to find a replacement battery I may just have to purchase new DVD player and use it for both..
- It takes a lot to keep my mind on exercise, and so I decided to invest in the Philips PET710 in hopes of finding some way to distract myself as I walked on my treadmill. Over all, I'd say it's been a good choice. The screen is just wide enough for me to enjoy a favorite television show while still allowing me to balance it atop the treadmill. The picture is good enough, and even improves the quality of copies of multi-generational tapes.
It has two drawbacks which, while they aren't serious enough for me to feel I made a mistake, are a little annoying. The first is that the volume can't be boosted to a point where it's easy to hear over the noise of my treadmill. The sound isn't lost, it's just a bit low for me. The other thing, which I find significantly more bothersome is that there's no resume function. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm going to be running through a two-hour film, so if I stop the machine, my place is lost and I have to find it again the next time I go to work out. Meh, they're small things in light of the fact that I do use it to convince myself to exercise.
If you want some basic function in a portable DVD player, this is a good bet. More bells and whistles? Look elsewhere.

5 comments about Panasonic DVD-S52S DVD Player.
- Bought the DVD player in conjuntion with a Panasonic 42 inch HDTV. Both item sare rated amoung the highest in Consumer Reports and the price officered was the lowest bar none.
- I recently moved up at an HDTV, and didn't want to commit to the high-def DVD war.
I honestly don't see any picture difference with the up converting on. It looks exactly the same. Yes, I am using the HDMI output.
There are two other problems that I have with the player. One of them is the flimsy DVD tray. This is not a serious problem, but it's such poor work that I worry that I'll break the tray by trying to center the DVD in it.
The other problem is that the menus are poorly laid out. There is a menu button.... then there's also a function button. The features you'd expect to find easily are all under Function - Other Settings.
On the plus end, I haven't had difficulties playing any disk at all. I haven't seen any stuttering of images or other problems.
- Product works very well. My only issue is the very flimsy DVD trey. But this is a great value for the low price.
- This dvd player is a gem.The picture is magnificent.I use it on the 1080i setting.Every dvd I play looks great.I love the user adjustments for color, brightness, contrast, etc. With a HDMI cable hooked up to it I doubt you'll find a better picture than this unit puts out.The only negative thing about the unit is it's factory preset picture modes.I never use any company's factory presets whether it's a tv or a dvd player. The Panasonic S52 has normal, cinema 1,cinema 2,etc.For some reason I always get a somewhat grainy picture on my 1080p tv.Trust me when I say adjust your own user settings with this player. You also will get gamma adjustment with the user settings. This will brighten up areas in the picture that are too dark.I tried a Toshiba SD 5000 first and was unhappy with it's picture. It wasn't built as good either.Toshiba SD-5000 1080i Upconverting DivX Certified DVD Player
- The Panasonic S52 is great for at home stereo/television use because it is light, convenient and portable enough to fit in a suitcase between trips. The picture quality is excellent and it delivers deep bass and clear treble which means it's ideal as a cd player too whether it's hooked up to a stereo or just a tv.

- I've had this unit for about 2 months now and have never experienced the problems I've read on this site. What I like about the player is how light and portable it is..Not only can you use it in your car while traveling but you can move it to your other TVs in your house and hook up to the audio video input on your sets and your're ready to roll!! The picture is amazingly sharp compared to some of the other players I have seen and the screen is designed for widescreen DVDs..in other words the film fits perfectly in the screen!
It comes with a car adaptor and a really nice and thin remote control that works wonderfully! I highly recommend this unit!!
- This is the worst electronic product I have ever purchased. Returned once to store, then the next three times to the company due to black and white bars at the top of the screen every time and had to pay them an extra $50. for the aggrivation. Now they think to appease me by sending me a model that is much cheaper than the one that I originally purchased. I have since read numerous reviews following the same problem. And to think, they continue to make this DVD player.
- This player did not work. The screen went totally black within 10 seconds after putting the first dvd in it. It had sound, but no picture whatsoever. Had to return and did not buy it again. Went with a Mintek instead and it is working fine.
- I purchased the 853, it's the same unit with an 8.5 inch screen. The first unit I purchased had bright red pixels all over. I took it back and exchanged it for the same model, the second one played the DVD for about 30 seconds and then choked. So I turned it off and back on again, but all it would do is say "Disc Unknown". I took it back for a full refund. This company makes the worst DVD players I have ever seen.
- I just owned this unit for a few days so I am unable to judge its long term reliability. I had one glitch right out of the box: the LCD screen was completely dark! I connected it to a TV and everything looked OK. After fiddling for a while then I finally found the culprit: the "line select" switch was kind of set in the middle. After moving it to the "out" position then the picture came up and there are no dead pixels. However, there is nothing mentioned in the manual about what's the exact funtion of this switch. In summary,
The Cons:
* Poor documentation.
* The vertical view angle is limited.
* Not S-video cable which requires a special connector.
* No "seek" buttons on the console.
* Display dot pitch is kind of big (the screen door effect)
The Pros:
* Versatile audio capability, good speakers.
* Works with DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD+RW.
* Changeable region setting as mentioned in the previous review.
* The screen brightness, aspect ratio and color is easy to adjust.
* Relatively low price (from another vendor)

- Pros: Nice size screen for the price with nice clear picture. Takes movement without skipping. Battery lasts for about 2.5hrs. Comes complete with carry and carseat mount case, home and car adapter. Has worked with purchased and recorded (dvd-R) movies. Battery charges quickly.
Cons: Volume without headphones is very very low. Volume is ok with headphones. It comes with earbud headphones with a splitter so two people can watch at once but I have not used the ones that came with it. With my own headphones the volume is fine and the sound quality is good.
The dvd door is pretty flimsy. Due to this alone I would not recommend this unit for operation by a child. As long as you aren't abusive it should be fine though. The unit itself seems as sturdy as any of the name brands that I've checked out in stores.
Some features (like fast forward and turning on/off captions) only seem to work by using the remote even though there seem to be buttons on the unit itself. I do admit thought that I haven't bothered to read the manual and I simply may not have set up some features properly.
Overall I am satisfied with my purchase and it seems good value for the price.
- SpectronIQ has a 90 day warranty. How bad would your electronics have to be to break within 90 days? My DVD player lasted about 5 months of light use, then the battery bulged and would not stay in the unit. Look at the companies web site before you buy. To me, it seems they are counting on making money off the people who will buy non-name brand because it is super cheap. In the case of this company, I would say definitely think twice.
