5 comments about Audiovox D7000XP 7-Inch Portable DVD Player with Swivel Screen and Digital Picture Frame Software.
- I just received this unit after waiting 8 weeks on back order. So far it does everything I had hoped for. It doesnt say it in the spec's but I just put in a dvd-r data disk that I made to back up my photos and it started playing a slide show of them. Looks like a great way to show photos to friends. It does the same thing when I connected a 4 gig thumb drive to it with photos on it.
- First, the product description is incorrect. The product does not come with a "Car Headrest Mounting Bag and carrying case." There is a headrest mounting *strap* (not bag) and a separate carrying case. On the bright side, the lack of bag makes it easier to change DVDs while mounted. I'm also unsure what "complete car cabling with car adapter" means. The unit comes with a cigarette lighter plug-in (car adapter) for auto use. Any other "car cabling" that would make it "complete" is a mystery to me.
The Good:
The price. This is the least expensive DVD with swivel screen and included battery that I've been able to find. The product does play DVDs, music, and photos as advertised. The carrying bag is cheap, but appreciated. Why don't more manufacturers include at least this simple accessory? I haven't tested the battery life yet but if it truly lasts 4 hours that will be an excellent feature.
The Bad:
The battery is external. I know that most are external, but the product description should be upfront about this. When playing DVD's at low volume you can hear the DVD spinning noise. Resolution for viewing pictures is poor, and loading time is poor (with a card right out of a 6 MP camera). If you like to wait and hear a buzz while your photo loads, this is your photo viewer. I assume if I resized the photos they would load more quickly. Why would I want to do that? The remote is a nice feature for auto use, but it would be nice if a "power standby" (off) feature could be activated from the remote (other players do this). While you can navigate a DVD using the remote you need to reach over to turn the power off when you are done. You cannot turn it off using the remote. This is a pain for a parent controlling the DVD player from the front seat. The manual is poorly written, but what one isn't these days?
Overview:
You may wonder why I'm giving it 3 stars even with so many complaints. I was looking for an inexpensive DVD player that had a swivel screen, an included battery, and that could be mounted on a headrest in a car. This was one of the few options available that had all of these features--although via a headrest strap rather than a bag. I have only owned the product two days and cannot comment on its durability.
- Yes, it does have digital picture frame software, but the screen resolution and display quality are really poor. If grainy, offhue display are okay (and for kids to watch in the car is what I'll use this for), then this unit may be acceptable. But if you want to show off decent photos, look elsewhere.
- Audiovox does not supply the cable you need to connect your portable DVD player to a television set. This means you have to buy, separately, a male-to-male RCA cable just to watch a DVD on this player on TV.
- This DVD player did not live up to expectations. I would not play video Cd's but most other portable DVD units will. The picture is really poor. Its has some cool features but not enough to offset the negative issues. I am going to give it away at a fundraiser because I do not want it.

5 comments about Samsung DVD-HD870 Upconverting DVD Player.
- I bought this baby hoping the upconverting would be impressive on my 52" rear-projection HDTV. Not very. The HD I get from my cable box blows away the upconverted signal that the Samsung fed my TV's DVI port from the Sammy's HDMI. I realize TRUE HD will blow away upconverted any day, but I really couldn't see much difference if any between the picture I was getting before with my old, not-even-progressive-scan, let alone upconverting dvd player through my component jacks and the upconverted signal from this one. Then there are the couple of annoying quirks this player has. One, every time you turn it off, it defaults back to 480p, so if you want 1080i, you'll have to remember to switch it every time you get going, which isn't something my girlfriend really wants to do. Also, the thing doesn't respond to commands from the remote until the 2nd or 3rd try. I tried different fresh batteries and got the same results-- for some reason you have to press everything at least twice. It would also be nice if it had more than one analog audio output, nitpicky, I know, but I utilize an optical out to my audio receiver, an analog audio out to my tv, and one more to pipe the signal out over an a/v distribution amp that goes to other tv's in the kitchen and bedroom. See, the video's covered because I have the HDMI going out to the big screen, the composite video out going to the distribution amp, and no video needed to the audio receiver, but the audio, I need one more output. Anyway, this player is unexciting. If upconverting doesn't get better than this, and I'm betting it does in more expensive players, then it's totally, totally over-hyped. Wait a few months and either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray are gonna be a helluva lot cheaper anyway, and yes, they will upconvert our old dvd's too.
- our TV was delivered on time actually earlier than expected. The delivery
men were excellent - checking out the electronics before they left and
instructing us how to use it. Would definately recommend
- Overall, this player provides great screen presence and functionality for the price. The glossy black finish gives the appearance of a higher-end model when you first turn the player on and an unavoidably intense blue status light appears, but the euphoric feeling quickly ends and is promptly negated when out of the corner of your eye you see the 80's era faint blue/green block digital alpha-numeric readout (i.e. OPEN, PLAY, etc.). Mechanical whirring and clacking noises occur when the tray is opened and closed. Redemption takes place when the image finally hits the screen.
Five stars for the picture and ease of remote operation.
Three stars for inconsistencies in appearance and lack of refinement.
Final verdict = 4 stars
- i am hesitant to drop a few hundred on a blu ray player and probably wont buy one till the prices drop or till i can get a good deal of 200 or less...so i decided to buy this upconverting dvd player...and let me tell you, it gets the job done...it is very very close to perfect hd quality...at first u cant tell the difference but if you have any other dvd player in the house you will notice this one does not pixelate as much...this is a great deal if ur not in the financial position to get a blu ray player yet
- Very disappointed. As others have reported, the remote is very slow to respond to commands. Worked fine out of the box. But started having issues, the most annoying being that via the HDMI output the audio is not sync'd with the picture. And of course it will only up-convert via the HDMI output, which was the major selling point. Audio seems to be fine thru the Component output.
Searched the Samsung website for a possible firmware update. I did not see a "update" listed, but a download was available. I'll give it a shot, but I'm not hopeful.

5 comments about GPX D1816 High End 2 Channel DVD Player with Remote Control (Silver).
- great for watching DVDs and playing CDs.
ONLY downfall would be my remote does not work!!
- I bought 2 of these DVD players. They were put in one position on top of the TV or on a shelf and never moved. One only worked with the remote from the very beginning. None of the buttons on the device worked. Within 2 weeks the other didn't work at all. Not with the remote, and none of the buttons worked. What a piece of JUNK!!!!
- I brought three of these. one hardly worked straight out the box. only one remote doesnt work. two of the three dvd players just stop working. one minute u are watching a dvd and when you take it out to change it the next disc or the same one for that matter comes up "bad disc" i have only had them for about two and a half months. I am so disappointed. so now i will have to buy a new dvd player. It is really sad that they were only made in may of 2007.
- Excellent DVD Player for the price -- No Bells or Whistles but easy to set up, simple to operate and plays EVERYTHING -- I have bought 3 of them so far (one for me and 2 for gifts)
- If you come across this model, note that there are two versions: one made for the international marketplace and one for US-only (though both have been distributed in the US).
You want the international version: Be certain the box says the unit is capable of both NTSC and PAL output. This will assure that you can play international disks from all regions. (You may need to find the region hack at videohelp-dot-com, but both the units I bought were code-free out of the box.)
If the box does not mention a choice of output, do not buy, even for the bargain price. You'll be getting the US-only version which does not have the built-in converter. This will restrict you to Region One, NTSC (North American) format disks only.
I had the (I assume) odd opportunity of seeing both versions displayed side-by-side in a job lot store. If you see a similar display, you may also note that the box for the US version is SLIGHTLY smaller than the international. (In fact, for that reason I almost bought it -- thought it'd be easier to carry; but then noticed the NTSC/PAL option was not mentioned on the U.S. box. Sure enough, after doing some online research, I discovered why. See above.)
That said, this unit is an adequate gap filler. If you need a cheap way to access disks outside region 1 or to convert PAL format to NTSC output (or vice versa) you can add this to your chain of entertainment devices.
However, being a cheaply made model, it's prone to malfunction, as some reviews here have said. The malfunctions of mine -- which only showed up recently -- are mild, but annoying. The tray only stays open for a few seconds before sliding closed. And I have to go through an elaborate shut down and reboot process to access the Setup menus with the remote -- otherwise I can only use basic features.
I have other media players for more rugged and consistent use, but as I say, to give yourself a little extra versatility where you might not want to spend mucho bucks to get a versatile box, this little deal plugs right in and does the job. (That said, for standalone players, you don't really need mucho bucks anymore. If you want one unit that allows you to be region free, play PAL or NTSC disks, and be able to play DivX & AVI files into the bargain, with a USB port and slots for data cards that can ALSO be played, the Avayon DXP 1000 G2 is your baby -- and at their website not much more than twice the cost of this GPX.)

5 comments about Panasonic DMR-E55S Progressive Scan DVD Recorder / Player , Silver.
- The Panasonic DMR-E55 is highly rated, but with some limitations, and I was considering getting one. But Panasonic just came out with a replacement, the DMR-ES10, which not only fixes most of the problems/limitations of the E55 but is also a mind-bendingly reasonable $200 list price. It just hit the shelves a few days ago, and I was lucky enough to be there at the right time and ended up with a unit. I love it. See the review I'm writing under the ES10.
Even if you find a good deal on a used/refurbished/closeout E55, you might at least want to consider the ES10 for its improved functionality.
[I gave the E55 a 4* rating to avoid skewing the ratings. I've noticed that when people don't rate a product, that counts as 0 *'s]
- I purchased the DMR-E55 in May 2004 & have nothing but praise for this machine and I think the DVD-RAM format is so good because I am able to record my favourite tv shows in DVD-RAM Format in XP or Flexible record mode then simply erase the commercials leaving just the tv show then play the Ram disc back in my Panasonic S27 player and record to DVD-R to keep for future viewing anytime I wish to watch them. I also have backed up many VHS tapes & home movies to DVD-R. The only problem I have ever come across with this recorder is that on the odd occasion after finalizing a DVD-R the menu has not been completely created even though all chapters buttons work fine the menu is not in full view but maybe that has been more a faulty disc than the machine itself but even so these few discs still play fine. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who is looking for a good DVD recorder.
- This should say it all: I just came back from the repair shop. When they saw me walk in with the unit the clerk said, "I can't believe how many of these units come in." This very model. I used it for a few months, made 20 or 30 recordings, then it just failed. I called tech report, told them the error message I was getting and they told me to bring it in. I have a feeling I'll be returning it often till the warranty expires and then I'll throw it out.
For what it's worth it worked well until its demise.
- This is a simple and complex machine. Simple in the way of how easy it is to use. Just press the REC button and you are done. And complex with all the useful features like MP3 player, CD player, DVD player, and my most surprised feature RF. If you are watching T.V. downstairs and recording upstairs, just press stop on the remote whenever within about 100 ft.
- I have 6 of these DVD recorders. It is so user friendly. Panasonic sent me a disc update to increase the speed of the drive to 8X. No one was selling the 4X discs anymore. I was in a total panic. I tried a Toshiba DVD recorder and it took a rocket scientist to figure it out and I still had major problems. Needless to say, I returned it. I highly recommed a Panasonic.

5 comments about Magnavox Dvd Player.
- Hooked this up to a Sony Wega 21" flatscreen and it works great. I don't have HD for this TV. The dvd player instructions come with three different hook-up possibilties including HD. The picture quality from this player is superior. I bought this after I saw the one my daughter bought from Walmart. Hers is connected to a 21" Sylvania flatscreen and the picture was so good I bought the player for my kitchen TV. It is small and sits nicely on my kitchen counter. Highly recommend this product.
- I have had to replace this item 5 times, and today the 6th is going crazy. I bought it from Walmart, so they keep replacing it for me, but it's gotten to the point where I want to cut my losses and get a DVD player that actually works. The longest I've had one is 3 months before it stopped working. What an inconvenience!
- Overall, it's a nice little dvd player. If you're only playing regular store-bought dvds which are in great condition, then this little player is phenominal, and you'll be quite happy. However, it is a little extra-sensitive to scratched dvds, and it won't play all formats of home-made videos.
We have 2 dvd players. This little magnavox, and a higher quality dvd recorder and player. The higher-end will play through most of the scratches on the dvds, whereas this magnavox will get stuck on most of the same scratches.
Also, this magnavox won't play all formats of home videos burned to DVD+R. We burned some from our computer, and some on our dvd recorder, and only some of them play on this magnavox dvd player. I wish I could remember which ones we burned which way, but I can't. If you have a video of an ultra sound from Fetal Photos, it won't play those either. I haven't tested DVD-Rs because I don't have any.
But like I said, regular store bought videos (including Netflix, Blockbuster, etc..) play just great, so long as they are in nice condition.
- Ordered and have used it at work many times. Ive read other review saying that it dosent last as long as other ones, but considering the other dvd players cost a lot more and some of them you can't set the regional settings on, this is a cheap but very effective player for the money. If it dies in a year or 2 who cares, you bought it for 30 bucks anyways lol. Considering I'm spending 80 dollars on gas every 2 weeks I figure 30 bucks for a year of movie watching aint to shabby.
- I got this as a Christmas gift from some friends after my last DVD player gave up it's ghost. It's now July...about 7 months later...and this player is dead already. It was fine up until a week ago, where you had to open/close the DVD tray several times to make it read a DVD. Now it won't recognize any disc at all. Sure, it's cheap...but only lasting half a year is still too short for any kind of product to be considered a good buy - at least in my opinion.

- Picture is not bad when it is working but do not bother to buy this unless you buy a car adapter power cord. When fully charged the battery only lasts about 10- 15 minutes, so unless it is plugged in somewhere get ready for a black screen.
