  1. I have a 32 inch HDTV, and I do all my TV viewing OTA (no cable or satellite). We enjoy watching PBS, and other broadcast stations. But the VCR could not record any of the digital channels. So I started looking for a DVR. My HDTV does not have a video out port, so I could not use a tunerless DVR.

So I bought this DVR mainly because it has a digital tuner, thinking that the quality would not be so good because it does not record in HD like a Tivo. But I was wrong. The quality of recording is so clear, I can't tell a difference between the original HD broadcast and DVD playback.

You can record at different quality settings. The higher the quality of recording, the less stuff you can fit on the DVD, because the higher quality recording takes up more space. At the highest quality setting, you can fit one hour of shows. At the next highest quality setting, you can fit 2 hours. At the next quality setting, you can fit 2.5 hours. And so on and so on all the way to a 6 hour disc capacity.

I recorded snippets of HD broadcast shows such as "CSI" and "Without a Trace" just to test out the DVR, and I must admit, I was impressed. At first, the screen was too dark, but I just had to go into my HDTV's options and adjust the brightness. With my Sony HDTV you can adjust the brightness of each input channel independently of the others (which, by the way, is a very useful feature).

So after I got the brightness up to normal, the quality of the recordings I made was really good. In fact, I couldn't tell any difference between the original show and the playback. Also, I couldn't tell any difference between the highest (1-hour) and second-highest (2-hour) quality settings. They both looked great to me. So I am really impressed with this DVR.

It is pretty slow executing commands and stuff, but that doesn't bother me. I just really like the fact that I can record shows now with such good picture quality.

I think I am going to get a cheaper upconverting DVD player for daily playback, and just use the Philips for recording only. You can get an upconverting DVD player for only a few dollars now (even a region-free one). My HDTV has 2 HDMI inputs, so I can just have each DVD come in on its own HDMI channel. So that seems like a good way to go.

  2. After many different DVD recorders on the low end of the scale and one dissapointment after another I purchased this Philips. I got the firmware update from Philips and everything works great. The tuner is good quality and it is fairly easy to program. If you are looking for a decent priced reliable unit this is the one!

  3. I bought this DVD recorder several months ago, but returned it because it had bugs. It is an okay product, essentially the same as a VCR of 20 years ago except with better picture quality and a digital tuner. The bad news: 1) it can not use the best recordable DVD format for time-shifting (DVD-RAM); 2) while the tuner is digital, the tuner will not output a high-definition signal for use with an HD-ready HDTV (Like my 3 year old model. Also, no DVD can record or play back a high-definition picture.); 3) it has no electronic program guide to identify or record upcoming programs.

My advice: Do what I did. After returning this and a highly-rated Samsung DVD recorder, I signed up with Dish Network and got their newest high-definition (hard disk) DVR, the 722-something. The cost was reasonable and the DVR is 20 years more advanced than any DVD recorder I am aware of. Very easy to use and can record a hugh amount of TV. Truly a great product. Direct TV and TIVO make similar products, but I think that Dish Network's is the best and best value.

  4. I bought this at Wallie World for $167 and was disappointed immediately. It's VERY slow to operate commands or read a disc. When you first load a disc it takes several minutes to format. When you record a program, it takes a minute or so to complete writing before you can access anything. Even entering the menu to select a recorded show to play takes too long. I've never seen a DVD player so slow to read data.

Worst of all was the time record function. It worked fine for the first couple of weeks and the quality was pretty good - though it certainly was not comparable to the original signal as some have stated. But soon we started getting a "Disc Full" error, even with a new disc in. Or a disc would work a couple times, and then suddenly say the disc was full even though we had one 30-minute recording on it in SLP mode.

I tried calling Philips customer service and was answered by a poorly-qualified customer rep. After about 30 minutes of her trying to give me different advice (much of which contradicted the manual and didn't work), we were either disconnected or she hung up on me (I honestly believe it was the latter). So I returned the device and got a basic DVD player for $47 that responds much, much faster than the Philips recorder/player. Then we picked up a digital recorder from our cable company that records 50 hours of video in HD quality to a hard drive and does SO MUCH MORE than the DVR and so much better. Finally, TV viewing is fun again!

  5. No complaints. It plays well, records well, and is easy to use (for me). The tuner works fine. I would buy it again.

  1. Beware of this and other brands on this page.

In the past year i have purchased or received as a present, Three (3) of these devices. ALL - each and every one lasted just beyond the 90 day waranty and my requests for assistance to the manufactures went unanswered.

I located the parent co. for the above and behold...they are the parents of many brands making these same devices and the parent co. of my three devices. They too, have not responded to request 2 months ago.

FUNAI is the parent of the following and all their brands (listed below) come from the same enginers and pile.

Brands: Sylvania....Seyesphere....Emerson....Adventurer....Durobrand....Ero....Magnavox.... Murokai and under the parents name.....FUNAI

Good luck, buy one that will work for more than 91 days.JVC DRMV99B DVD Video Recorder&VHS Combo with Built-In ATSC Tuner

  1. Polaroid 7" Portable DVD Player - Red (PDX-0073C)
    ==========================================================================
We've used (and sold) these units ourselves for over a year now, and we've had none of the problems that the other TWO reviewers have stated here.

What I like about the Polaroid PDX-0073 Portable DVD Players, is that they are much lighter and more compact than any of the other portable DVD players that we have used, tested and/or sold, in this class.

And they have a very attractive casing and a beautiful red, non-slip outer shell, (if that's important.) I think its important because many times, these units are held on the user's lap, and so the non-slip surface, helps prevent them from slipping off, and being dropped!

These electronics, like most electronics will normally hold up extremely well, if they are not abused!

But we see so many times in our business, with portable electronics devices like these, that they are dropped (by children and sometimes adults) or handled so roughly, that granted, over a period of time, they probably will eventually fail with this type of treatment.

But generally speaking, if you handle these units (like most portable electronics) without EXCESSIVE abuse, shaking or dropping them a few times, they will most likely work for you for a very long time.

And having been in the electronics business for over twenty years, I can tell you first hand, that this is true of almost all modern day electronic items being manufactured and sold today.

Generally speaking, the vast majority of electronics built today are normally EXTREMELY RELIABLE, but for the very few that do fail unexpectedly, its usually because of the way PEOPLE (or kids) handle them, and usually not because the product just simply stopped working!

Generally speaking, that's an extreme rarity with today's modern electronics.

Of course there's always going to be exceptions to this, and nothing is always perfect, and static electrical discharges are known, on very rare occasions,to cause electronics to failure but generally speaking, most electronics manufactured today are EXTREMELY reliable, and should last the consumer for an extended product life.

  2. This is a great little DVD player! I haven't had any of the problems mentioned by the others. The screen is nice and clear and it is very easy to work. It's also nice and light for traveling. I am very happy with the purchase. It's a great color of red too!

  3. We bought this DVD player over a year ago after our other portable Polaroid broke (it fell off the bed and the little stub that plugs it in inside of it broke). I did like that it had the non-slide surface, and thought since WE had technically broken the other one we would buy that brand again. I was so very wrong in that choice. Here are our problems...
    1. The fast forward button jumps about 3 minutes each time you push it, you can't really fast forward to the next frame.
    2. The open and close button started not closing all of the way about 2 months after we got it, we have to secure it with a piece of tape.
    3. The picture quality is not that great.
    4. Some times you have to turn it off and on several times before you can get to the main menu, it seems to get stuck somewhere on the loading page.
    5. Now the battery will not charge at all in the car and if you charge it in the house, it only holds for about 30 minutes. And it looks like it will be cheaper to buy a new one than replace the battery.

Since this is the second Polaroid we have had a problem with, we will probably buy another brand.

  4. I don't care what these guys used (or sold!), these players are crap.

Not just one, but two of these Polaroid portable DVD players were purchased less than a year ago. Both quit spinning the DVD in the 13th month within a few days of each other. What do you do with a working LCD screen and no player? Nothing. It's crap. Don't buy Polaroid!!!

Oh, and I call BS on the care and handling on the 5 star recommendation. Baloney! The last one to quit had just played a DVD. Popped out that one and put in another one and it just wouldn't play. Happened that quick. Disc won't spin. So, trying to explain away the player not working due to abuse is pure horse crap.

  5. This has to be the worst consumer scam ever. You can search online to see how many people have or have had the "no disc" error problem with many Polaroid dvd player units. They should be prevented from selling sub-standard products to the public until they clean up their act. This is my second and LAST Polaroid dvd player. I bought the same unit but in a swivel-head incarnation prior to this purchase. It too died an early death. I purchased this unit because Polaroid was a trusted name in my family for many years. That is not so today. For these many people to be having the same issue and for Polaroid to only put a 90-day warranty on the product speaks volumes. I for one am DONE. Caveat Emptor.

  1. We are currently on our second unit and both have stopped working for no apparent reason. The seat mount is well designed, however, the DVD player is clearly garbage and the unit should not be purchased. Reading other reviews, it is apparent that there is an inherent problem with these devices.

  2. The player doesn't strike me as any different from other low-cost players, but the headrest mount is brilliant. The connector to the cigarette lighter DC supply fell apart, though I am not positive whether it did that on it's own or whether little fingers took it apart.

  3. Do NOT buy this!! We bought our first one Jan. '07. After having it for less than one month, it stopped working. We returned it and got a new one in Feb. It is now June and again, it just stopped working for no reason. I was given a 800 Nextar customer service # that I will try since this is supposedly under warranty (1yr). I have paid less for DVD players that are 5 or more years old and still working. What a huge disappointment.

  4. I purchased this DVD player to keep my toddler entertained during a long car trip. It was quirky right from the beginning. A few (brand new) DVDs would not play at all on this device. Some other DVDs would play but would cut in and out during playback. I also found it difficult to get back to the main menu at times. I had to pull the car over repeatedly so that I could climb into the back seat to troubleshoot this player. This made our long car trip take much longer!

  5. When I first saw this item, I thought it was the perfect dvd player for the car.It worked perfectly for over a year,no problems at all. Then all of a sudden it started to lock-up or freeze the screen. My son would give it a little tap to get it going again. Now it will not work when it is cold outside. I still use it when I travel, the accessories let me use it through the hotel tv. I purchased another one and have not had any problems so far after about six months.I still think for the price it is a great deal.

  1. I have been using this unit (I paid $240 at Costco) for a couple months now. DVD recording quality of broadcast/cablecast television in it's 1-hour "XP" mode is excellent. Other modes: (SP) 2-hour, (LP) 4-hour, and (EP) 6-8 hours recording modes are okay, but pixelation and compression artifacts become more obvious, particularly in complicated and/or fast moving scenes. And it's QAM digital tuner is excellent at recording SD and HD signals if passed through by your cable company. (I use cable, but don't have a cable box. I just subscribe to basic analog cable, but my cable provider Comcast includes local digital unscrambled channels in this package as well, such as FOX, NBC, CBS, and ABC, something I didn't realize they did until I bought this digital recorder and an HD TV set).

I love using RAM discs to record TV programming. RAM discs allow you to simultaneously record one program while watching another program already recorded on the disc. This makes watching an evening of television very easy, and being able to skip through all the commercials. And not having to wait for the recorder to finish all the evening's scheduled recordings before starting to watch. DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs do not allow that feature -- only DVD-RAM discs.

I'd give this unit even higher marks (a 9 or 10) were it not for it's buggy software driving all of its features. The unit occasionally gets "confused" and locks up -- not responding to buttons on unit or on remote control. You have to unplug and re-plugin to reboot the software. This happens about once a week. This is only a minor inconvenience (takes about a minute to reboot), and re-powering it does not make it lose any of its stored channels setup or scheduled recordings memory.

The unit (and interestingly two other Panasonic DVD recorders I have) also suffered a problem with recognizing what date it was for a while if left set automatically. I had to set the date manually for a while (a couple weeks). But now automatic date seems to be working again. I suspect some software bug.

The other problem I have occasionally, is that it occasionally fails to record a scheduled program, for no apparent reason (there's still room on disc). I have not been able to figure out why (although the manual suggests it could be due to digital rights management issues on digital broadcasts, but I'm not convinced of that).

  1. I bought this player because I bought an HDTV and want to take advantage of the HDMI input and surround sound. It is about the cheapest unit you can find, especially with HDMI input. I found that DVD players break rather easily, regardless of brand, and new HD DVD's have not come down in price enough, so I brought to this unit to hold me over for a few years.

The unit works as what you expect- brilliant picture and good sound. The picture is close to HD quality, but not quite there. I bet it is no different than any upconverting dvd player. It is smaller than the picture suggests. It is almost like a portable unit.

    The downsides:
The Coby unit cannot be used with a univeral remote. There is no digital display on the unit, and it looks low priced. The remote has a cheap feel to it, but is intuitive and easy to use. The unit feels warm to the touch in "off" mode. It is probably one of those energy sapping devices.

  2. I had the similar experience with this product. Within five months it broke to the point where it will not even recognize any DVDs/CDs that are put into the player. Actually I used only about 10 times. When I called Coby, they told me that the warranty for replacement is 90 days and the unit cannot be repaired. In other words, it can only be replaced but your warranty is expired. The only thing I can do is to throw away this piece of junk.

So, don't buy this product (probably other Coby products too). They may be cheap but you may just waste your money.

  3. I got this player for its up-conversion feature and HDMI outputs. It worked fine for a while, but broke down after 2 months. I contacted customer service and they suggested I send it back (with a $13 S&H charge) and they will replace it.

I did just that, but got a player without the HDMI output nor the up-conversion feature. After writing to them again and some phone calls, they agreed to send a unit like my original one. At that time, I had two units (one without HDMI, one with HDMI) and was happy.

A couple of months later the non-HDMI unit broke down. Like the first unit, it just stopped recognizing disks. Thinking that I still had the third unit, I did not contact customer service but instead opened that third unit and started using it.

Guess what? After 4 months, it broke down. I'm using it for 2-3 hours a week, inside a home, in a fixed location - nothing extraordinary.

So, within a year, I have THREE units that are all bad, and am out what I paid for the unit plus $13. I contacted customer service but they said that since 4 months have passed, the unit is no longer covered, and that I'd just have to fix it someplace else. My complaints that they have sold me a lemon did not help.

My next unit will be a Phillips, not a Coby.

  4. Beginning on day 1, the player made a loud noise whenever in use. After 6 weeks (and no more than a dozen dvd viewings), it stopped working all together... whenever I put in a DVD it powers off. Not worth the cost of sending it back; a total waste of money.

  5. the worst item i ever bought on amazon
i wish i would have got my money back for this dvd player
the movies always skip, there a lot of distortion
colby should slap themselves in the face for releasing this product.

5 comments about Sony RDR-VX555 Tunerless DVD Recorder/VHS Combo Player.
  1. I purchased the VX555 yesterday at Sams club. I recorded from one VHS tape to a DVD. The DVD turned out to record only a portion of the vhs tape, but more importantly, the machine erased a good portion of the tape that I have had for 15 years. It tried it with another tape that I didnt care about and the same thing happened. The tapes played with no problem before and now the memories I had are gone, thanks to this piece of crap machine. I am no stranger to electronics either. With all the other bad reviews that are listed here, I can only add that you are taking a chance sticking one of your vhs tapes in this machine. Do so at your own risk. I only wish I would have known about this problem. Ths machine is going back to Sams today. No more Sony for me.

  2. Sony RDRVX555 is no longer a useful product because the broadcast industry is inserting the copy-right signal on most of there channels.

  3. I am completely satisfied with the ease and function of this VCR/DVD Combo Recorder. I have already transfered most of my VHS recordings to DVD and it couldn't have been easier. The Sony RDR-VX555 automaticly senses the different recording segments and places an index on the DVD. It is so easy to find special recorded segments for quick and easy access to desired recordings. The quality of the picture to my HD Monitor allows me to watch great quality picture of older pre-recorded VHS movies and standard DVD's I can give my BluRay player a rest.

The only thing I wish I could do is a high speed dubbing capability. This would speed up the process of re-recording my VHS copies to DVD.

  4. We purchased this product for about $200. All we wanted was something to convert our home videos to DVD's. We didn't want or need anything fancy, had no interest in recording TV to DVD - we don't watch much TV anyway, and all of our commercial VHS Tapes were converted to DVD a long time ago.

It was about a month old when the disc drawer wouldn't close. We sent it back for $12.00 and got it back about 2 weeks later. We tried it out and it seemed to work fine. Our project to convert our VHS library was put on hold due to other priorities.

Now, here we are - I've burned 5 - FIVE - DVD's and now it won't take another recordable DVD. I put a commercial DVD in, and it says disc error - DVD cannot be played nor recorded.

I'm in for a fight with Sony.

  5. I bought this to transfer VHS tapes to DVD. That function works well when it works HOWEVER it reads any interference or tracking issues on the original tape as copyright protection and won't record-- way too sensitive to that. The hook-up and set-up are a NIGHTMARE, and I have hooked up many VCRs, DVD player, stereo system, etc. This one is totally convoluted. The hookup to record from a TV broadcast is so complicated I won't even attempt it. Even the basic set up required help from phone tech support, which is also unsatisfactory; the first-tier personnel know NOTHING and when I had problems just told me the machine needed to be replaced when i fact, one setting needed to be changed. I had to get that info from a higher-level support person. Currently, I have to wait until their limited hours to speak to someone as somehow one setting is off and it wil not record at all-- I know and understand what needs to be changed but can't get that information frm the TERRIBLE manual nor from online support. Unless you are a video technology professional or really enjoy frustration, I recommend NOT buying this product. I have bought almost exclusively from SONY for at least 25 years, and ignored the negative comments from reviews like this one when I purchased the recorder. Hopefuly you won't repeat my mistake. I love my other SONY products but this one has been a major disappointment.
