4 comments about Philips 8.5-Inch Portable DVD Player with Ipod Docking.
- I bought this item almost out of spite. Apple under its brand name sells an outrageously expensive ($49), proprietary A/V cable for the iPOD touch in order to output video to an external (larger) display. I would like to have such an accessory cable for my iPOD touch, but not at such a lofty price.
The Philips DCP851 (and slightly larger DCP951) provides this capability, via a simple A/V jack on the side of the case, and it works GREAT! Philips just saved Apple iPOD touch users 50 bucks!
So why not just buy the cable? Because, this product provides the added functionality of an extremely compact, portable DVD player with built-in 8.5" LCD due to its tablet style display. The DVD player itself is built-in underneath the display. There is a pull out "tilt" stand to hold the screen upright on a flat surface, or you can just watch a video holding it in your lap.
You can also use the display to watch and listen to full length movies downloaded and stored in the iPOD's internal flash memory with the latter docked in the popout-hideawy docking port. Slick!
The DCP851 is a multimedia product when docked with an iPOD device. It plays videos stored in the iPOD and a DVD from its optical drive, or from an external A/V source. It plays music just like an MP3, but does not require headphones. It also can display photo album library slideshows as well.
The picture quality of the TFT LCD is certainly not perfect, no where near "HDTV" in quality, but still adequate under most (indoor) ambient lighting conditions. The resolution is as good as standard analog TV.
The audio output (volume) of the built-in, mini stereo speakers is understandably a bit weak, but there are a pair of headphone jacks for listening to the audio. The nice thing about that is TWO people sitting side by side can both enjoy this product at the same time while waiting someplace like a coffee shop, in an airport or while traveling together. For travelers this is basically a self contained, portable entertainment system easy to take with you wherever you go. However, on battery power you'll have about 2.5 hours before a recharge is necessary.
The DCP851 comes with everything you need except an iPOD and a couple of your favorite DVD movies. It has an AC wall plug adapter and a 12Vdc in-car adapter for recharging at home, in the office or on the road. It also has a right/left audio and composite video, TV cable to output your media content and videos externally, or conversely to input an external A/V signal to the DCP851's built-in display and speakers.
As first reviewer, I'm giving this a GOOD review and recommend it to iPOD users looking for an all-in-one accessories solution and a portable DVD player to boot.
- i just bought my Ipod Classic 160 a couple of months ago, which I, despite its shortcomings, absolutely love. when it comes to the assesories, I had collected every possible imagenable thing for my IPod. the only thing missing was a Larger screen to watch it on. This is where this player came in the picture.
this unit provides a solution for the deliberate shortcoming that Apple somehow incorporated in the latest version of their Video Player, that it can not be connected to an external video source (unless you buy Apple's AV Wire). I had one of those wires from prior unit, but as said, It does not work with this newer unit (Classic 160).
but the primary reason was not that I needed a wire, rather that I wanted something where I could watch my movies on a larger screen WHILE on the Move. the whole purpose of an IPod is so one can enjoy the entertainment while on the road, cuz if you are home next to your TV or Computer, you don't Need you IPOD, rather use a standard stereo or TV, so the purpose of the Wire is sort of .... what should I say ..... useless.
the cosmetic status of the player, thou not outstanding, is pretty desent. a screen cover could be appreciated while transporting or storing, (the accompanied pouch does not protect against physical impacts). the body, as being thin plastic, is fragil, and have to be handled with care.
the plus about this player, as compared to others in ths same size and price class is that not only can U use it for your IPOD, it also has the standard DVD (obviously) and the SD Expansion slot, which can come handy somethimes when I don't have a blank dvd at hand and want to watch come of my videos on the move. Just copy crom computer to SD Card, currently available in 8gb capacity for less than $50.
there is one drawback with the unit that I would like to point out, the Power Consumption. about 1 movie playback on batery before recharge required. I could wish that had been a bit more. other than that, an outstanding unit.
- I received this product as a father's day gift and love it. It's a very functional dvd player, but it's best feature is how much it expands the capability of my iPod classic. I use it as a dock to listen to music on a radio, which is enhanced by the larger display and remote control. I've read that the video docking cable sold by Apple for $50 won't play some iPods on standard televisions. I have had no such problems with this product. I can play movies downloaded from itunes on a standard television without any special cables with quality about as good as a standard dvd.
The drawbacks are minimal, really. It comes with a car charger but no way to mount it. The battery life is very short, so you'll have to find other ways to keep your kids entertained on trips longer than 2.5 hours. It won't charge your iPod unless it's plugged into an AC power source, which really isn't a drawback, but you have to make sure you power off the iPod or it will continue to run and drain the battery. The remote is great, but there is no power button on it, so you actually have to get up and turn off the device when you're done with it. The screen quality is very good, but seems to have fairly limited viewing angle.
If you have an iPod, I definitely recommend this product.
- I searched for several months and looked at a variety of different options before finally purchasing a portable dvd player. This works great with my ipod nano (a little small for watching videos, but great for storing videos that I then watch on this dvd player). Also, I've taken it with me on several business trips where I've hooked it up to hotel room televisions to watch videos off of my ipod or DVD's.
I agree with some of the other reviews that the screen quality is less than some similar players and the battery life is less than stellar, but I have yet to find a portable dvd player that had everything I wanted for anywhere close to a reasonable price. I simply picked the one that I felt best met my own needs. The biggest drawback that I hadn't considered before buying is that there is no car-mounting kit. I'm trying to find one that will work, so that my son can watch in the car. I'll update my review if I find one - if anybody else has ideas, please post.

- I got this thing for christmas and it Rocks. everything works great i evan made a slide show on the computer, hooked it up to a big TV, and then i could pan and zoomon the bigger screen. plays Mp-3 player, Digital camera, MoviesAM-FM Radio i als love the remote it's a never ending learning experence. I deffenetly would reccomend this. also the picture quality is amazing IIIIII Like it
- Great little boom box. I was thrilled when I found out that it also plays Karaoke. I had not seen that mentioned in the description of the product.
I use it to study my Bluegrass banjo lessons using the video and then am able to play along with over 140 MP3's that I have recorded.
If I have just a few I want to practice I use the USB port.
You have to do a little work around with the music ID and the sound could be a tad better. This would be the only reason I am not giving the unit a five star.
- It was what it stated in the product description. It would have been even a greater value if it had a digital television tuner built in. I was disappointed with the size and weight. But then I was used to the boomboxes from the 1980's and 1990's(JVC Kaboombox, etc.)The sound was okay but the bass button performed below par.Again I'm used to the older models where the bass would rattle your teeth and pop out your eardrums.I guess with older technology things weighed more which is why I was taken aback with how light it was.Either parts got smaller and better or metals were replaced with plastics.Overall it was okay but if it had a surprise digital television tuner then I would have given it five stars instead of three.
- A real shame... video and audio quality quite acceptable. BUT... the AC power cord DOES NOT reliably connect to the unit. So unless you don't mind going through 8 C-cells at a time, beware! I even returned the first one for a replacement and the AC connector was just as bad.
- Just recieved this item for my birthday and was quite suprised. I'd asked for a portable dvd player a ways back and was VERY glad to recieve this one.
Not just a small dvd player, but also a boom box. Radio, cd, dvd, playback of all types. Its overall very interesting. I've not yet delved into its mp3 or mpg or avi playing capacity, but even if its simply a DVD/radio/CD/ player with great sound and compact size and great video, then i'll settle for that ;)

- I recommend buyers look at the Amazon reviews for defunct JVC VHS/DVD
dual deck products before they purchase any current dual deck model.
They have a proven history of extremely poor build quality. JVC keeps
rapidly changing model numbers, which makes this more difficult for
the consumer to discover. However they all look very similar with
only slight cosmetic differences.
Search on these item numbers and see for yourself:

5 comments about RCA DRC285 DVD Player with HD Upconversion.
- Please don't be fooled into buying this. The first unit I got didn't play DVDs and my second quit working after 7 months. It would play a movie (DVD & USB) for 10 minutes and then crash and display garbage on the screen.
- First off, I can attest to the good video and audio of the product WHILE IT WORKED. My first unit lasted about two months then started freezing and feeding horrible noise to my receiver. My second unit was used 5 times (yes, this is no exaggeration) and started to shift portions of the video horizontally while occasionally peppering the video with white snow. The bottom line is that this is a cheap, flimsy product. You can get NO RCA SUPPORT! The website states that if the product is still within warranty you have to send it back to the place of purchase. There is no firmware update available and it will be cheaper for me to cut my losses now and replace the unit with another brand at extra cost than to spend the gas money repeatedly. I will never buy another RCA product as the RCA logo is just slapped on a Thompson product. The same goes for Thompson and Audiovox.
Do yourself a favor and don't buy this or another RCA product. If you do, which is your choice, keep your receipt as you will likely need it.
- OK, I normally research my products before I buy them. Well, I was out buying a well-researched new TV and saw this on sale and figured, Why not? RCA has traditionally been a good brand. After bringing it home I saw all the bad reviews, but my unit played beautifully so I kept my fingers crossed - for about 3 weeks. Maybe lasted through 3 movies. Then it stopped recognizing discs.
The Philips DVP59xx units are similar in features and price, but seem to stay alive a bit better than these RCA units.
- My first RCA DRC285 player performed very nicely for about 6 weeks, and then failed, with the picture freezing into a random pattern on the HD screen, and with all controls on the unit and the remote having no effect. Unplugging it unfroze it for a few times, and then it crashed altogether. I sent it to Thomson's Austin, Texas warranty return location, and two months later received a replacement unit. This one lasted through about 5 DVDs and failed so completely that not even unplugging it could unfreeze it. I haven't decided if I will send this one in for another warranty replacement. The new instructions indicate you now have to send it to Canada, which really speaks poorly for Thomson Electronic's response to their obvious quality control problems. Unless you hear that the Canadian models are way more reliable, I wouldn't recommend this unit to anyone, which is too bad. For basic upconvert DVD viewing, I thought it worked quite nicely.
SD
- I purchased this item for the TV Guardian feature, but I cannot find it on the set up menu. I have even had an(very limited and not easy to come by)email from customer service that explained the steps as to how to get it to work. It is just not there. It has a feature that allows me to set the level of movie allowed to play (G, PG, R etc...) but that is not what TV Guardian is. It was only about $40 with $15 shipping so to send it back would be a waste. So I guess I will just have to keep it as a back up or ebay item.

- This unit is unbelievable value. Extremely easy to set up, and has RCA, S-Video AND Component output. NTSC/PAL compatible, and a 2 second google search shows how to make it multi-region too.
Great unit, unbelievable price!
- great for watching DVDs and playing CDs.
ONLY downfall would be my remote does not work!!
- I bought 2 of these DVD players. They were put in one position on top of the TV or on a shelf and never moved. One only worked with the remote from the very beginning. None of the buttons on the device worked. Within 2 weeks the other didn't work at all. Not with the remote, and none of the buttons worked. What a piece of JUNK!!!!
- I brought three of these. one hardly worked straight out the box. only one remote doesnt work. two of the three dvd players just stop working. one minute u are watching a dvd and when you take it out to change it the next disc or the same one for that matter comes up "bad disc" i have only had them for about two and a half months. I am so disappointed. so now i will have to buy a new dvd player. It is really sad that they were only made in may of 2007.
- Excellent DVD Player for the price -- No Bells or Whistles but easy to set up, simple to operate and plays EVERYTHING -- I have bought 3 of them so far (one for me and 2 for gifts)

- I need a video recorder that has a built-in tuner. Not devices that require a converter box that costs money per month to rent from a cable company.
- this unit does not have tuner, which means it can not connect with any TV antenna or cable connection directly. therefore, it can not work with most of the home setup. It says it can work with a special cable settop box. However, the title of the product does not say so clearly or explicitly. therefore, I had to go through the trouble to return this unit, wasted my time of having a useful VCR in time as I planned. Very disappointed with this purchase and this purchase experience.

- I bought the JVC to replace a panasonic DVD-recorder the suddenly died (I realized that with ONDEMAND that I rarely ever used the recorder features anyway). The only thing it could have used was an optical audio connection, but the digital coax works just as well.
The picture is great; it obviously doesn't have as many bells and whistles as the DVD-recorder that it replaced, but it definitely gets the job done.
