  1. It worked fine the first day.
The second day it refuses to play any DVD. Keep getting "wrong disc" error when playing DVDs. It still can play CDs.

  2. I bought this player over two years ago for my son for Christmas. I was hesitant at the time because of mixed reviews. At the time I purchased it on sale through amazon for about 100.00. The player still works I'm very please with it. It has traveled with us on various trips and is used at home by family members. Past reviews which mention the player only working a couple of times and not working again may be cause by a little switch that sometimes is tampered with by children. The switch is an AV in and out switch. If the power button is on, the dvd is in the player, and you get a blank screen I'd suggest playing with the AV switch on the side of the DVD player.
Now there are plenty of portable players to choose from that are new and affordable- this review is just to inform others that after two years ours still works and we are pleased with it.

  3. Well, I think my title says it all. When it was working it seemed like a good little dvd player. The first time I used it during a lay-over the battery died before the end of my 2 hour movie. It then broke for no apparent reason after only two more uses.

  4. This DVD player worked great with light use for a little while. Then it said "No DVD" for certain DVDs. Soon it said "No DVD" for all DVDs.

It is now a good looking but worthless piece of electronics that I hope can be recycled.

  5. This is a great little protable DVD player for the camper. We don't always take our laptop with us everywhere ... so this DVD player fits the bill. Of course like any other electronic device that has to run on a battery, it doesn't have as long of a charge as I would like.

  1. This is wonderful i love it i also love how it ready JPEG files, Great buy you will not be sorry!!!

  2. I have owned this DVD player for about 6 or 7 months and so far I have not been impressed with its performance.

First off, I should say that I wanted a DVD player that could play various formats and I admit that I have not had any problems so far with it recognizing various formats.

However its ability to play DVDs day in and day out has not been satisfactory. These problems do not seem due to wear and tear since they began very soon after I purchased the product.

    1. If the DVD player has been turned off while a DVD is in it, sometimes, after you turn the player on, it will not successfully load the DVD inside. So you must eject and then reinsert it again.

    2. The worse problem is that occassionally it will freeze during movies or green squares will appear on the screen and it will stick like a broken record player. This is not only with older scratched up DVDs, or burnt DVDs, but brand new DVDs right out of the packaging.

All in all I probably would not have purchased this player in hindsight despite its multi-format playing abilities and it's relatively low price.

  3. This player plays as advertized. I burn many discs from Avi or Divx. They play fine besides store bought and home dvds, although I have had it only a few weeks. The price is great. It would be a 5 star except it DOES NOT have a fast forward funtion, so beware.

  1. I bought this in June thinking it would be perfect for recording and playback. I struck out on both counts. The biggest glitch is when ANY pre-recorded (store bought) DVD gets to the point of "dual layer" transition-the player freezes and wont move. Now, a lot of DVD players pause/freeze momentarily at this point, but this thing just sticks. Im sending it back for repairs. Stay tuned.
The recorded discs seem to play only on some DVD players-which is par for the course with home-made DVDs. BUYER BEWARE!

  1. Does what it is supposed to do, but speaker sound is not quite loud enough for me to hear it well while using an elliptical trainer. I am sure it would suffice for a car or plane with headphones, but that is a pain while exercising. Region free function is great and the controls, even without using a remote, are easy to use. I'd buy it again.

  2. I just bought this dvd player and it plays american movies (zone 1) well. However I can't get it to play european movies (zone 2). Can someone help me? Do I need some kind of code to make it zone free?

  1. When deciding to purchase a dvd/vcr combo the only things that concern me is the picture quality, ease of operation and the price. This inexpensive easy to use unit has an excellent dvd and vcr picture playback quality that is probably second to none. Remember-This is a dvd player and not a dvd recorder. Also keep in mind that this unit does not have a built in tuner. This means that in order for the unit to function you will need a separate tuner(such as a cable box or satellite box) THAT HAS audio/video jack outputs along with a television THAT HAS audio/video jack inputs. I am sure that the unit being tunerless is what makes for a better picture.

  2. I'm very happy with this player. We use it all day long. I bought it for my 3 year old daughter's room. Her tv is not hooked up to cable. We just use it for her to watch her videos and DVDs. She can watch Sesame Street tapes all day and we keep them playing. This machine is up to the task. Obviously, we haven't recorded on it, but the picture plays very clearly and the sound is great. Remote is easy to use as well. Wonderful seller. Fast shipping. Would recommend.

  3. I really wish I'd read the user reviews of this product before purchasing, because nowhere in the the product description is it mentioned that there's no tuner. This means that it will only record what the TV or cable box is tuned to. Not good. I had to return the item shortly after hooking it up.

  4. I agree with a previous reviewer..It's pretty ridiculous that you have to wait until you open the box to find out that this DVD/VCR Combo will not record videos on tape unless you have a cable box or satellite receiver....as usual, you get what you pay for...

  5. While there is nothing exceptionally bad about Sony SLV-D281P DVD/VCR combo player, there is also nothing exceptionally good about this unit either. Like in the previous reviews, this is a player and not a recorder unless you are using the VCR side. VCR side still function as a recorder as always. There is also no tuner in this unit and thus, there is no cable input or output in this machine. I found that somewhat disappointing and real pain since I usually like to connect my cable to the VCR and then to the TV. Instead, all the connections are done with RCA cables but you have to buy an another set of RCA cables initially since Sony provides only one set of cables. This will allowed you hook up the RCA cables from the cable converter box to this unit. You still need to buy another set to connect this unit to your TV set. In case I forget, you have to buy another set of cables to connect the DVD player half to your TV. Of course, to connect the unit to the audio system will require more cables. This unit does not come with a DTS or DD decoder so your receiver better have one if you want sound separation. (Hopefully, you already have these cables from your previous usages. It should be noted that if your cable box do not have a RCA outlets, this unit will be totally useless for your needs.)

Another minor complaint is that the function lights are pretty dimmed with this unit. At times, depending on the lighting around the unit, it can be difficult to see if this unit is on or off. The remote also appears to be bit on the weak side. Its range of angle appears to be pretty limited to direct on approach.

On the other hand, it does the job it designed for pretty well. The VCR works fine and the progressive scan DVD provide good images for your standard DVD. I agreed with some of the previous reviewers that this unit is really geared toward a very basic and limited needs of the user. I can't see anyone who owned a real home entertainment system using this unit as their primary player.

  1. Just purchased GPX's PDL 805 to play Region 1 and 2 DVDs. The product description specifies it will play both NTSC and PAL. It DOES NOT. I tried to get technical support from the seller (no luck) AND from the maker - GPX.com. GPX's technical support told me it will play European DVDs only when ... hooked up to a PAL TV! Needless to say I didn't get a portable DVD player to keep it connected to a TV. What a bunch of nonsense. Don't buy it if you want to play PAL DVDs.

  2. I got this GPX brand portable dvd player a couple days ago and am so far satisfied. It does everything I expect it to. I would give this product 5 stars even were it not for one annoying feature, or rather the lack thereof. There is no menu button on the player itself! If you don't have the remote control or have lost it you won't be able to access the menu of your dvd while you're watching the feature. The only remedy I see to this is to skip to the very last chapter and fast forward to the very end forcing the menu to come up. But who wants to do this? I am a pretty responsible person and am anal about keeping the remote together with the player so this is not too big a problem for me given the remote continues to work. But I definitely see the potential for frustration.

Some things I like include the carrying case and the screen. The picture is pretty sharp, and the sound is decent. And I didn't expect there to be a carrying case in the box but it came with the player which is very nice.

So overall this product is okay. I don't regret buying it but if I knew of the menu button issue beforehand I definitely would've picked a similar player that had such a button ON the player.

And I don't use PAL discs so the player not being able to actually play those types of discs don't bother me one bit, false advertising or not. Too bad for that reviewer though.

  3. I really love this DVD player. I use it all the time and it works just fine, however, the remote control does not appear to work. I bought new batteries and put them in the device and it's not working. Other than that, I'm happy with it.

5 comments about TOSHIBA SD-780KR - MULTI REGION UP CONVERTING 720p/1080i DVD PLAYER WITH HDMI OUTPUT. PLAYS PAL/NTSC DVDS FORM ANY COUNTRY ON ANY TV..
  1. Great video and sound. Played a DVD from a tiny independent film company didn't understand DRM and therefore didn't code regions properly. Plugged it into the TV HDMI port and it played perfectly. This player even has a "subtitles" button on the remote, so you can choose if & how you want subtitles displayed. The only fault I found so far is that the DVD holder is flimsy, so you have to be careful.

  2. I am very happy with this unit and especially with the after sales service by VCT Electronics who helped me with technical advice.

  3. This is a very good DVD player. It plays everything - DVD, DVD DL (dual layer), DIVX, XVID, MP3 and other file formats. Plus, it plays these formats on CD, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-DL, etc. Quality is very good. It has HDMI output. I have region free version and it played DVDs from all regions without problems. It has dual voltage and PAL/NTCS automatic switch. I am multilingual, and I needed such player to play DVDs from both my country and North America.

One previous reviewer noticed that Toshiba US won't help if a player is not coded to region 1. Of course, Toshiba won't render service, if DVD is region free. It should be coded to specific region to be entitled to the service. This is general problem with all manufacturers and there is no suggested solution to people with different ethnic backgrounds who want, for example, to be able to play DVD from their countries in North America. (I mean, that the only solution is to buy region free player but then you can't apply for service, if something happens.)

I agree with another reviewer that DVD looks fragile and you should handle it with care. But it is not portable DVD, so you won't really move it back and forth.

The only problematic thing I found is that there is no online support such as manual and firmware for this unit (at least, I could not find it even at other Toshiba regions' website).

Overall, it is a very good player.

  4. This DVD player upconverts DVD's to 720p or 1080i. It also plays any DVD in the world. The upconversion capabilities create a far better picture on a 720p VIZIO TV. This player can be set to PAL or NTSC, and converts any DVD to either format, but it's only necessary for standard TV's. If you have an HDTV, then you can set the DVD player to AUTO.
This thing is a cheap DVD player, so don't expect any extra features. For one thing, there's no STANDBY mode, so you always have to start the disc over when you turn the player back on. If you have a PAL TV, then avoid this player completely. NTSC converted to PAL on this player is jotty, horendous, and completely uncomfortable to watch. However, the other way around does wonderful things that I really like. It's most noticable on videotaped shows (like sitcoms). PAL converted to NTSC on this player actually makes videotaped shows look like they're on film. Some people don't like that because it alters the original picture quality, but I do because it makes cheezy soap opera video look like it was shot on film. Filmed shows (like any movie that has ever been in the cinemas) are not affected by the PAL to NTSC conversion. I don't know how it does it, but it does and I like it.
If you have an HDTV, then you can play around with all the settings and see which works the best for you. If you're getting this player, then I'd recommend setting it to AUTO because the picture will not be altered. If you do not have an HDTV yet, then you shouldn't get this player at all.

  5. Toshiba SD-780KR purchased from VCT Electronics through Amazon. The first one quit after 6 months. The second one just quit after 5 months.
VCT's warranty is 3 months, then they refer you to Toshiba, but Toshiba won't work on all-region converted players. Local electronics shop quoted
(tongue in cheek?)$1,000 to repair but wouldn't guarantee it would work. Being a glutton for punishment I ordered a third one which arrived today. Doesn't work! I give up and will try to return it. Wish me luck.
