5 comments about Sony DVP-NS90V HDMI/SACD 1080i Upscaling DVD Player.
- Very satisfied!! Had it for two years and works flawlessly.
Plays all formats dvd or cd.HDMI works like a charm ,user friendly remote, audio in all formats plus audio/video sync. mode up to 100 ms can be very useful.
Annoyingly slow loading of discs but minor drawback compared to all the pro's of this machine. Definitely worth the money.
- For me, this product was a great hedge: it was a very cost-effective and high-quality way of not choosing a side in the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD standards war. I recently bought a 37" Samsung LCD TV (720p) and it was clear that I wasn't getting the full visual punch of HD with my old DVD player. The research I did said that if you have an LCD smaller than 50", you can't see a difference between 720p and 1080i; furthermore, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD are apparently only worth it above 50", so you also didn't need to lock yourself into a standard that could die in a couple years like Beta. An upscaling DVD (like this one) would work fine. And, I'm happy to say, it looks great. I use it for movies, and they are really clear (I sometime pause it just to see the great picture quality), and the sound is terrific, too. So, for ~$150, I'm getting the full HD value out of my new TV, and I'm not worried that one format will die and leave me holding the bag. This is a great choice for getting an HD picture and not bothering with the standards war.
- I recently purchased the Sony DVP-NS90V to replace my "slow and clumsy" Toshiba HD-A1 (Blue-Ray won). This is a great player that accompanies my Sony KDL-40V2500 LCD TV very well. The picture is just as good if not better than the old Toshiba I had. I did not really notice any slow loading problems, but as you know, I was used to the Toshiba. The picture is awesome via the HDMI hook-up. I am very happy with the purchase made. Another great product from Sony.
- I paid a bit more for this DVD player, but results have been well worth it! Picture quality is excellent and I like the pause feature--which really holds the scene until I'm ready to resume. Controls are relatively simple and everything works as promised. A friend bought one at my recommendation and is likewise very satisfied with it.
- I received this player for my b-day a year ago. Starting about 6 months ago, it has stopped reading some discs if there were scratches on the disc (the discs could be read by 3 computer DVD drives worth a third of the money). It seems to have gotten pickier as time has gone by. When it does work, the picture and sound quality are great, but that is only about 60% of the time right now.

5 comments about Samsung DVD-HD870 Upconverting DVD Player.
- I bought this baby hoping the upconverting would be impressive on my 52" rear-projection HDTV. Not very. The HD I get from my cable box blows away the upconverted signal that the Samsung fed my TV's DVI port from the Sammy's HDMI. I realize TRUE HD will blow away upconverted any day, but I really couldn't see much difference if any between the picture I was getting before with my old, not-even-progressive-scan, let alone upconverting dvd player through my component jacks and the upconverted signal from this one. Then there are the couple of annoying quirks this player has. One, every time you turn it off, it defaults back to 480p, so if you want 1080i, you'll have to remember to switch it every time you get going, which isn't something my girlfriend really wants to do. Also, the thing doesn't respond to commands from the remote until the 2nd or 3rd try. I tried different fresh batteries and got the same results-- for some reason you have to press everything at least twice. It would also be nice if it had more than one analog audio output, nitpicky, I know, but I utilize an optical out to my audio receiver, an analog audio out to my tv, and one more to pipe the signal out over an a/v distribution amp that goes to other tv's in the kitchen and bedroom. See, the video's covered because I have the HDMI going out to the big screen, the composite video out going to the distribution amp, and no video needed to the audio receiver, but the audio, I need one more output. Anyway, this player is unexciting. If upconverting doesn't get better than this, and I'm betting it does in more expensive players, then it's totally, totally over-hyped. Wait a few months and either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray are gonna be a helluva lot cheaper anyway, and yes, they will upconvert our old dvd's too.
- our TV was delivered on time actually earlier than expected. The delivery
men were excellent - checking out the electronics before they left and
instructing us how to use it. Would definately recommend
- Overall, this player provides great screen presence and functionality for the price. The glossy black finish gives the appearance of a higher-end model when you first turn the player on and an unavoidably intense blue status light appears, but the euphoric feeling quickly ends and is promptly negated when out of the corner of your eye you see the 80's era faint blue/green block digital alpha-numeric readout (i.e. OPEN, PLAY, etc.). Mechanical whirring and clacking noises occur when the tray is opened and closed. Redemption takes place when the image finally hits the screen.
Five stars for the picture and ease of remote operation.
Three stars for inconsistencies in appearance and lack of refinement.
Final verdict = 4 stars
- i am hesitant to drop a few hundred on a blu ray player and probably wont buy one till the prices drop or till i can get a good deal of 200 or less...so i decided to buy this upconverting dvd player...and let me tell you, it gets the job done...it is very very close to perfect hd quality...at first u cant tell the difference but if you have any other dvd player in the house you will notice this one does not pixelate as much...this is a great deal if ur not in the financial position to get a blu ray player yet
- Very disappointed. As others have reported, the remote is very slow to respond to commands. Worked fine out of the box. But started having issues, the most annoying being that via the HDMI output the audio is not sync'd with the picture. And of course it will only up-convert via the HDMI output, which was the major selling point. Audio seems to be fine thru the Component output.
Searched the Samsung website for a possible firmware update. I did not see a "update" listed, but a download was available. I'll give it a shot, but I'm not hopeful.

5 comments about LG DN798 1080p Upconverting DVD Player.
- I purchased this DVD player a few months ago to replace a Denon dvd playe, which I loved. Before hooking this player up, I was worried that the quality would not be great (given the low price). However, after an easy installation, I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent picture and sound quality. (I have the player connected to my receiver via an HDMI cable and a fiber optic cable.)
This player is a great segue between a standard and high definition dvd player.
Pros: Great picture, great sound, easy setup
Cons: Small remote (universal definitely required), not DivX compatible
- I needed an upscaling player for my 37-inch HD television but didn't want to spend a lot of money. I also didn't want a $50 player that would only cause me trouble. After quite a bit of research, I settled on the DN798.
I'm never sure what to think about picture quality comments in reviews, but this rated well with Consumer Reports and seemed to be well-liked by reviewers. Even without adjusting my set or fine tuning the player, I'm very happy with this player. The closest comparison I can think of is that the movies look similar to the film-based movies available through Comcast's OnDemand.
The quality varies a bit from DVD to DVD, but there are a lot of factors in producing a good image. One that really stood out was The Simpson's Movie, but my nine-year-old version of Dumb and Dumber looked great as well.
Keep in mind that to upscale video and watch protected discs, which is just about anything purchased, the player must be connected using HDMI.
Other pros: Sound was great via coax digital, USB port right on front (goofy limitations in the manual, though), couldn't have been easier to set up.
- This has been one of the best DVD Players I have ever purchased. I hooked it up to my LG 32" LCD TV and I am amazed at the picture quality. It was worth the price.
- We have had this DVD player for 5 months with light use. It will not power up and LG wants $69 to look at it. This is a poor quality product that the company does not stand behind.
- Works like a charm. I have 1080I, not 1080P, but the DVD looks amazing.
The only downside is the need for a switch to accommodate 2 HDMI inputs, one from my FIOS box and one from the DVD Player.

3 comments about Audiovox FPE1505DV 15-Inch LCD TV with Built-in Progressive Scan DVD Player.
- Thought I got a great deal on this unit for under $300 brand new at a local electronics-chain store. Setup the unit, everything seemed fine after a DVD test drive. I got the cable run and the TV quality was poor, but it was expected for this no frills system. Connected a set of headphones into the headphone jack and that was the end of it. No sound at all (either headphone or built-in speakers). The remote is also terrible...no range and you must be directly in front of the unit for it to respond. Audiovox support is of no help.
- After 6 months of using this product I still enjoy the look of it and the quality of image, as well as the possibility of watching dvd, vcd, cable and antenna tv, and even listening to cds on it. It's true that the sound quality and volume are not great, but for a bedroom or kitchen tv the product does just fine. The remote isn't bad at all, lots of functions, settings angles, zoom, etc, all is there, in a card like format, light and it even comes with colors to help identify functions. I have played many dvd formats, including computer burnt stuff, most of them work here, which is a plus for this unit. Overall I'm happy with the product.
- Great price but the changing channels on the remote control seems slow. Also the remote control strength seems to be very weak even after I changed the batteries. Also the uasability of changing channels is not great. I am using this in the kitchen and it does the job it is also nice to have the built in DVD player so I get to have a DVD player in my kitchen with out taking up more counter space. Also sometime the TV does not work and needs to be "rebooted" unplugged from the outlet.
Bottom line is it is a good choice if you don't mind the inconviences and don't want to spend alot of money otherwise I would not recommend it.

5 comments about Coby TF-DVD7307 7-Inch Portable DVD Player with Swivel Screen.
- This little player is great. It is kind of loud when it spins up, but its not all that bad. The picture is fantastic, sound is also suprisingly good quality, it also has all the features of higher priced ones. I love that it is a swivel screen and comes with a case to hang it on the back of the seat with. it even has audio and video in, I am going to try to hook up the PS2 in the car and see if it works, which I am pretty sure it will. I happy enough with this product that I bouight 2 of them one to keep each kids quite in the car on long trips. Hope this helps you select your player.
- When i first received this player, after the first 3 weeks the screen just went blank but Amazon was great and sent me another one right away. this new one ive had for 3 weeks and hasnt gone bad yet. i like that everything is included (remote, headphones, and a little case). i recommend this dvd player for anyone that has an overnight job like me.
- After owning this DVD Player for about a month, I really like it. The picture is good and the volume is plenty loud. The only down side is that it doesn't come with a good case for use out of a car. Overall, I would say this was a good buy.
- So far so good. We are enjoying our Coby dvd player. The swivel screen is cool. I've had absolutely no problems with it!
- I live in a foreing country, our highways and other routes are full of holes, and my son can enjoy his dvd's without a single pause, simply don't jump, the image is great, the sound is great. The case is just for the car, is not for transport the unit out of the car... excelent product with excelent price.

5 comments about Sony SLV-D350P DVD / VCR Combo.
- For nearly two years, this product served us well. Actually, we didn't use it all that much -- on average we would watch a DVD every 2-3 weeks. A few months ago, it would occasionally fail to recognize a DVD, or would otherwise freeze. I used a DVD cleaner, which I think "maybe" helped one evening, as we were able to get through a movie with just one instance of freezing. Not worth the frustration anymore, so tonight I am online shopping for a new device. I won't buy this model again. P.S., When it worked, it worked quite well -- good picture, easy remote, conveniently placed output ports. Not a bad product if you get a good price, but I think I could have done better.
- DO NOT buy this Unit if you want to watch Dvd's LOL...seriously don't waste your money. I purchased this particular machine 2 years ago. Worked
great for awhile then the glitches and inherent problems surfaced. I seem to be having the same problems as many other reviewers ...will not read DVD's anymore at all, Dvd load compartment door will not open (make sure you have a butter knife handy to pry it open, we kept one next to the player til it stopped playing) Even brand new DVD's froze up and would not play. On the plus side the VCR works great . Anyway I will be shopping for a new combo unit today and will have to think real hard before I purchase another SONY.
- Two of them have died early deaths - like everyone else the DVD just stops and won't play. I can't beleive that Sony put their name on this worthless boat anchor.
- I've had this player for a little over 2 years and was happy with it until the middle of last week. Now after reading through some reviews, it looks like I'm just one of the many that had the DVD side of the player fail completely.
On a positive note, up until the point it failed, both the DVD and VCR worked great. But while watching an episode of The Family Guy on DVD last week, the scene froze and no buttons had any effect. I unplugged it and it hasn't read another DVD since. It tries for a few seconds and then I get the word "Error." Just for fun, I even tried opening it up and fidgeting with the laser, moving it back and forth, but it looks like the DVD functionality is gone for good. :-(
- Although my player still works, and gets used almost every day, I have never been happy with this machine. I'm sorry I did not read online reviews before buying this in 2006.
DVD picture quality is poor compared to the other 4 DVD players I have used. Picture is dark and does not reveal detail what I can get from the same DVDs on different players. No amount of toying with the video settings for this player have helped.
Videocassette produces some kind of static dots on screen that can only alleviated or removed by tapping or hitting the top of the player at the rear top, just left of centre. I can't believe I have resorted to hitting solid state electronics to make them work! My old GE VCR from the early 1990s works better than this Sony.
I agree with others' comments about the remote. After two years of daily use, I still have to re-read the remote buttons to access special features. On other remotes, you tend to remember the logical places for things and can locate them without thinking.
So, the thing still works, but I have never been happy with this player and regret the purchase. It is now in the basement getting used for exercise videos. This was my first and likely my only Sony purchase. I'm now into Blu-ray and went with Samsung instead.

5 comments about Sony BDP-S301 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player BD/DVD/CD Playback with Bonus HDMI Cable.
- I have been a dedicated Sony customer, purchasing Sony products for most of my AV requirements. As a rule Sony products are very good performers for the price paid.
I recently purchased the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray player, along with a Toshiba HD-DVD player (HD-A30).
When the Sony works, it's night and day between Blu-Ray and watching DVD's on our old DVD player. We have a very respectable sound system which pushes the audio through the full compliment of all the Klipsch Synergy III, -3 series speakers. It would be nice if we could hear the true audio that is encoded on the Blu-Ray. Strange that Sony has the concept but makes players that don't support it.
And to make matters worse, this 4 month old player began to sporadically freeze up after watching about 1 hour of select, various movies. As of this time, I'm unaware how to unfreeze it other than to turn the player off, then back on, then find where we left off, and hope it begins to play without additional issues. That timespan is usually around 7-10 minuutes, waiting for shutdown, power up, loading the DVD and finding where we were. By then, one has almost lost interest in watching the movie altogether.
In researching the web, many have the same issue, no one has the solution other that what we are already doing.
But this problem isn't unique to just the Sony Blu-Ray. Our Toshiba HD-DVD player does the same thing, fixed by the same process.
Some DVD's play all the way through, most don't. We have returned and replaced a number of HD-DVD's only to get replacements that reproduce the same problem.
I'm almost thinking that the commercial Blu-Ray and HD DVD's are dual layer, as both units freeze (when they freeze) at about the 1 hour timeframe. It almost appears than when they try to begin reading the second layer, they lock up making that transition. When you stop, reboot and reload, you usually go past the layer shift, thus playing the second layer all the way through, along with missing segments of the movie.
I have contacted both manufacturers concerning this, neither have responded.
I never had much experience with Toshiba products, and based on the lack of their customer support (even though it's a discontinued product, it should still be supported under their warranty), it is doubtful that I will ever look to them for consideration of purchasing any of their other products. As far as Sony is concerned, I am genuinely surprised at their lack of support to a problem which is obviously becoming more and more prevalent on a product line that is becoming more and more popular.
- Possibly the crappiest Sony product I've ever owned! The picture quality is indeed amazing, but the drawbacks to this first generation BD player is that it sucks. I remember purchasing a cheap Akai DVD player in 1999 and thinking "Damn, the latency from pressing the button to actually having something happen on the player is terrible!" I can say the same for this second-rate product with a first-class name. Every now and then the player will freeze. I've watched a great deal of BDs on here, courtesy of Netflix. It worked fine for awhile, but then for some reason the BD movies started freezing and I thought it was the discs. Turns out it was the player. Long story short: It's not worth the money yet. Wait to get it second hand if you really need a BD player, or wait until better, newer players come out!
- I'll have to say that I've seldom read such a load of baloney as is present in the "J. Preston" rambling, paranoid conspiracy theory review.
My comment is not about this player specifically, but blu-ray players are a significant upgrade to the viewing and listening experience, not a conspiracy by Sony to control your life. ROFL
There was once such a plan, the infamouse DIVX concocted by an LA law firm in combination with Circuit City and a couple of hardware producers, and it fell entirely flat on its face.
The only disadvantage to Blu-ray is that it is still in the early adopter pricing levels, both for players and content. Now that the tug of war with HD-DVD is over, it will be the dominant viewing platform before very long at all .... and you won't have to worry about Sony controlling your life, brain washing you, demanding your first born child, or kidnapping you for secret medical experiments.
- I recently purchased my S301 for $270 brand new without reading the reviews first. As soon as I click pay, I thought to myself crap, I should have researched this a little further. Oh well, it was cheap. After reading good/mostly bad reviews from Amazon and other websites, I was disappointed and wished I didn't buy it. But I'm glad I did.
I've had the S301 for two weeks now and, besides the slow load time (about 60-90 seconds), everything works perfectly. It hasn't skipped/froze on me and read all the Blu-ray/DVD movies just fine. The picture is amazing and the sound is great. I have a 46" 1080p Vizio and Panasonic Home Theatre - it's not a Sony or a Bose but hey it works :). I'll give it a few more weeks and see. I'm scared, I hope none of that bad stuff people say will happen to my player! Oh well, at least it wasn't super expensive.
- I've had this player for about a year now. I get incredibly frustrated almost every time I use it. It takes about 1 minute to start up. While its booting, you cannot open the tray to put in a disc or take one out.
I like many others have had the treat of a movie freezing up after about an hour. Then I play games with it for the next 20 minutes waiting for it to restart, and then deciding which part of the movie I am going to skip in order to at least see the end.
Perhaps all Blu-ray players have these problems. I don't care. The technology is not where it needs to be. Save your money and wait for the next generation of players that have fixed these problems. I am much happier using my upscaling DVD player that I bought for half the price. The picture is nearly as good from where I sit, and the audio is just as good.

5 comments about Audiovox D2016 10-Inch Hi-Fi Slim Line Portable DVD Player.
- I bought this DVD player for an upcoming flight. I also use it for my toddler at restaurants. Wow! Phenomenol picture & great sound! I was so impressed with this unit that cost much le$$ than other brands. We love it so much we are purchasing another (on our flight my toddler was captivated, he watched all his "Diego" & "Dora" shows, he was an angel on the plane thanks to this baby! I watched a movie on another flight with my new JVC noise-canceling headpkones (another great buy & reasonable price) With these headphones & DVD player, I almost forgot I was on a plane. I cound not hear the droning of the engine & it was like I was in my own private movie theatre. JVC HANC80 Folding Noise Cancelling Headphone Also, the case I got that fits perfectly was. Case Logic DVS9 DVD Player Shuttle for 10-inch DVD Players Perfect fit, holds some DVD's, great for travel. So I would highly recommend this DVD player, slim line design made it great to fit in my cary on bag kept under my seat on the plane.
- You will hear nothing but raves for this product from our house. It has an excellent picture, great sound ... it's easy to use and is certainly a superior piece of technology. (The zoom feature is a real plus.) Would recommend the Audiovox D2016 10" Hi-Fi Slim Line Portable DVD Player to anyone ... and it's at a great price too.
- I watch the majority of my shows on this TV screen. I love it because it's portable. We watch movies on the big screen, but my DVD's of cooking with Julia Child, and sitcoms are most enjoyable on my Audiovox. It has added pleasure to my everyday life and so it's worth the price. If my unit breaks I'm ordering another like it.
- I bought this for my daughter so she could play DVD's for my grandson who is stuck in his seat looking backwards and who gets very tired of seeing nobody and being strapped in a car seat like a crash dummy. I figured it would work to entertain him while my daughter drove him around to wherever.
I knew that it was refurbished, but I have bought refurbished before on line and that usually means somebody changed their minds and sent it back for no real good reason, and I have been very successful at finding decent stuff this way and not paying full retail for it.
This DVD came poorly packaged with no bubble wrap to protect it. Got lucky tho and it was packaged well enough to survive the trip. However it came with NO INSTRUCTION MANUAL, AND THE CASE WAS SCRATCHED UP SO IT WAS WELL USED, OF THIS I AM SURE. So all the talk of being "factory" refurbished was not actual. So far it has worked fine, tho the sound doesn't appear to be very loud. I am sure the head phones will be sufficient for most people who are not trying to entertain a 11 month old while in a car seat. Now if I can only figure out what all these buttons and switchs are for....maybe Audiovox has a website to download a manual...I will just have to search around and see. For $150, It should have been included in the package. I bought from a company called: Tech for Less LLC, thru amazon....
1610 Garden of the Gods, Suite 100
Colorado Springs, CO 80907
And for crying out loud, put some bubble wrap around this fragile electronics when it gets shipped...fire the shipping clerks who are too stupid to do it right.
- I was pleased with this product until stopped working 3 weeks after I bought it. Of course, the seller only guarantees it for 10 days and only if you keep the original packaging. The seller offered to take the product back and replace it for me only if I promised to take down my negative review and only if I had the original packaging. They claimed they could not send it to audiovox without the original packaging but meanwhile audiovox assured me that I could send it to them with no problem in another box. That is ridiculous and I advise everyone to not buy this product or anything from this vendor. I had to pay more money to send it back to audiovox and who knows if they will fix it or what. This has been a huge hassle and I am never buying from an amazon vendor again.

5 comments about TOSHIBA SD-780KR - MULTI REGION UP CONVERTING 720p/1080i DVD PLAYER WITH HDMI OUTPUT. PLAYS PAL/NTSC DVDS FORM ANY COUNTRY ON ANY TV..
- The region-free hack is poorly executed. Item arrives with a manual in English and, I guess, Russian (not the usual English/Spanish/French). From the start it was incapable of playing from the point stopped after being put on standby. All I could do was write down the minutes and fastforward from the start each time. Later, with no input from me, it set itself to the strictest child setting, so refused to play a rental DVD of the Lost series, instead asking for a password I couldn't possibly guess. Trying anything to get around this, I hit "reset defaults." This done, my HDTV refused to recognize the machine, pleading "Mode unknown." So I left it in my condo lobby with a "free" sign.
The bright side? It's picture output was superb, much better than the 1080p Samsung player I bought to replace it. If only I could find a region hack for the Samsung.
- Great video and sound. Played a DVD from a tiny independent film company didn't understand DRM and therefore didn't code regions properly. Plugged it into the TV HDMI port and it played perfectly. This player even has a "subtitles" button on the remote, so you can choose if & how you want subtitles displayed. The only fault I found so far is that the DVD holder is flimsy, so you have to be careful.
- I am very happy with this unit and especially with the after sales service by VCT Electronics who helped me with technical advice.
- This is a very good DVD player. It plays everything - DVD, DVD DL (dual layer), DIVX, XVID, MP3 and other file formats. Plus, it plays these formats on CD, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-DL, etc. Quality is very good. It has HDMI output. I have region free version and it played DVDs from all regions without problems. It has dual voltage and PAL/NTCS automatic switch. I am multilingual, and I needed such player to play DVDs from both my country and North America.
One previous reviewer noticed that Toshiba US won't help if a player is not coded to region 1. Of course, Toshiba won't render service, if DVD is region free. It should be coded to specific region to be entitled to the service. This is general problem with all manufacturers and there is no suggested solution to people with different ethnic backgrounds who want, for example, to be able to play DVD from their countries in North America. (I mean, that the only solution is to buy region free player but then you can't apply for service, if something happens.)
I agree with another reviewer that DVD looks fragile and you should handle it with care. But it is not portable DVD, so you won't really move it back and forth.
The only problematic thing I found is that there is no online support such as manual and firmware for this unit (at least, I could not find it even at other Toshiba regions' website).
Overall, it is a very good player.
- This DVD player upconverts DVD's to 720p or 1080i. It also plays any DVD in the world. The upconversion capabilities create a far better picture on a 720p VIZIO TV. This player can be set to PAL or NTSC, and converts any DVD to either format, but it's only necessary for standard TV's. If you have an HDTV, then you can set the DVD player to AUTO.
This thing is a cheap DVD player, so don't expect any extra features. For one thing, there's no STANDBY mode, so you always have to start the disc over when you turn the player back on. If you have a PAL TV, then avoid this player completely. NTSC converted to PAL on this player is jotty, horendous, and completely uncomfortable to watch. However, the other way around does wonderful things that I really like. It's most noticable on videotaped shows (like sitcoms). PAL converted to NTSC on this player actually makes videotaped shows look like they're on film. Some people don't like that because it alters the original picture quality, but I do because it makes cheezy soap opera video look like it was shot on film. Filmed shows (like any movie that has ever been in the cinemas) are not affected by the PAL to NTSC conversion. I don't know how it does it, but it does and I like it.
If you have an HDTV, then you can play around with all the settings and see which works the best for you. If you're getting this player, then I'd recommend setting it to AUTO because the picture will not be altered. If you do not have an HDTV yet, then you shouldn't get this player at all.
