  1. I bought this over a year ago and only had minimal issues with it not reading the disc. I think it was the brand of DVD-R that I was using becuase when I tried a new batch, I never had any problems after that. This is great for long trips because it is very compact.

  2. I watch many foreign DVDs. The "patch" for altering this model is easily found on the net. It fits easily into a carry bag or briefcase.
The top (viewing screen) however does scratch very easily so be careful with it. Otherwise, I'd buy another (I got it on sale for $50--can't beat that)!

  3. I like this player very much. This is not by primary DVD player - I have my main one hooked up to my TV, or I use my desktop computer DVD drive.
But for the convenience of just popping this little guy into my purse for a subway or bus trip is perfect, and the video quality is fine for just having something to watch when you're not at home. I much prefer taking this along than those 7-inch players that you have to flip up and keep open to watch those are not convenient if you are standing on line or in a waiting room. This item is held like reading a paperback! I recommend this if you just need a player to take and watch away from home - you can have PERFECT video quality for your bigger player at home, this one is very watchable for outside the home. Better than those itty bitty iPod screens.

  4. really great picture on a little 3" screen - i love it - sturdy - arrived fully packaged in manufacture materials brand new

  5. Where would I be without my little DVD player? I've had it for two years and I use it every day. I don't own a TV because commercials and junk shows drive me crazy. I buy seasons and rent movies and this player is my entertainment center. I lay in bed with earphones and watch shows so I don't disturb my husband. The sound with earphones is great - better than without. It's been abused and it keeps on playing. Now after two years it is freezing a little - but a flick of the finger starts it right up. So now the old one will go to work to help get through a very slow retail slump for my employees when work is done and I keep the new one for me! To the person who said there is no stop button - there is. It's the middle one. Press to play and press to stop. It has rewind and FF, too.

  1. for the money i paid for this it was a waste. it was trashed in a day. the screen is way too small and the controls were difficult for even me to figure out.

  2. i originally bought this for my daughter on her 4th bday in august. i was a little worried she wouldn't be able to work it, but just after a day or so she got it. i do wish the screen was bigger for what we paid. i just had to purchase another one becuase her 1 year old brother threw hers across the room and broke it. i guess now we'll have 2 sets of headphones :). the other would have lasted alot longer if my 1 year old hadn't broke it :(. luckily i found 1 really cheap...YEAAAA!!!!! there are other dvd players for the same price with a bigger screen, but they don't have Dora on it.

  1. I was looking for my 3rd portable dvd player for long time.
    We tried 7" then 8.5".
7" was polaroid and batteries was broken after 3years used so it's ok maybe it was time.
Then got 8.5" it was not time for die but my kids broked it(steped on it)

So decided try 10" next time and searched but not so many brands for 10" or up as you know.

Purchase this from BestBuy because I could return it if it's not match for my needs.

Good: Play back feature! even turned off player totally there is memory and it's resume movie wherever last scene was. Speaker is loud enough with normal play and selection which live, pop, living, etc... Surround system option very echoing.(little too much but for people who like it)
If your child too small to use headphone it is good to pick this unit. It's goes up to very loud for some dvd too quiet on another dvd player. Very nice picture quality with large size. Compare with 8.5" it's a lot bigger.
Even 3rd row can watch no problem in the car. We put this unit on the armrest on front row.

    Ipod friendly.

Con: Volume button on side it too sensitive as well as on/off power button. Both button shouldn't be too sensitive because lot of folks using inside car. After set up dvd and everything just easy touched turned off :( Volume as well. touched by accident and volume down and up.

NO Volume in remote control! Why? it should be on the remote!!It is important than fast forward or rewind!

Remote slot isn't smooth enough, stuck inside so better keep out from slot.

I wish this unit comes with SD card slot and USB port might be perfect but maybe asking too much for this price?

5 comments about Toshiba SD-4980 DVD Player with HDMI and DivX Playback.
  1. I've had this DVD player for over a year and have had the same problems other reviewers have listed. It skips, it doesn't play things I've burned one time and the next time it will, it crashes which requires you to unplug it each and every time. BUT...it plays DivX. That helps. - Spend your money on something better. Too many crashes too often and not enough good things to offset the bad including the price.

  2. Toshiba makes a quality product. I have been buying from the Toshiba line for 20+ years. The SD-4980 is a great DVD player for the price, I have had mine for about 8 months now and it see's a lot of use. This week the disk drive motor gave out. This will be 8th Toshiba in 7 years, all having suffered the same drive motor fate. Some have made it a year, most have not, but like I said they do see a lot of use. You will need to step up in price range for a longer lived unit. "You Get What You Pay For"

  3. This DVD player is a great buy for the price. I have had it for about 3 years now and the only problem I can report is that it pauses for about 3-5 seconds randomly throughout a movie, this will typically happen about once an hour. When you take in to account that this DVD player is usually under $60 from a retail store, plays DIVX, plays burned DVD's/CD's, and is a Toshiba brand, it's a great deal! Plus I have HDMI support so I can hook it up to my HD TV easily.

The picture quality that the DVD player outputs is great as is the sound. I have never had a problem with a DVD or CD playing and the fact that it will play all my .AVI/.WMV files is GREAT! The player also has a title command that will display how much time your disc has left, how much has elapsed, and what track it's on. Another thing I think that Toshiba could have improved on was the fast forward and rewind commands. When you press FFW or RW it doesn't respond very fast to the remote.

If you need a DIVX/DVD player and you are working with under $100, I would definitely suggest this player!

  4. It's been almost two years since I bought this item refurbished from woot.com and have been pleased ever since. The picture quality on my Toshiba widescreen SDTV has been excellent and playing divx/xvid files on CD-Rs or DVD-Rs even looks good. I never would have though that this would last this long.

  5. I've had this player for a year and this thing is getting on my nerves. It will periodically and randomly skip even though I'm playing a brand new DVD I bought earlier in the day. I rewind the scene back to make sure I don't have a defective disc and it will play fine through. So yes this is very random skipping for no reason at all. Multi-angle scenes are even worse since most, but not all, the time it skips so much it is not even watchable. Some DVDs will play perfect, others will not. The same goes with multi-angle scenes. Also this player has froze up on me a few times, but it is rare.

The nice features like HDMI upconvert and Divx playback are the only pros that keep me from giving this player 1 star. The picture quality is nice through HDMI but obviously not as good a blu-ray player (seen a PS3 in action so I can compare). But the random skipping, freezing, and the inability to play multi-angle scenes really outweighs any positive aspects this player may have. If these problems can be fixed in any easy manner, I would bump up my rating.

  1. Do not buy any Impecca product. I purchased a DVP-725 portable DVD player as a gift and took it overseas. It was faulty from day one. I have tried to contact Impecca on 5 occasions, leaving three telephone messages and sending two e-mails. I have not had a reply to any of them.

    Be warned.
