  1. This DVD player is junk. I have had several movies that will not play in it. I lived with that. Now it plays through perhaps 10 to 20 minutes of an audio CD and just shuts off mid-disc. RCA/Thomson customer service website and phone help is a joke. It is beyond the 3-month replacement warranty period so I must pay $50 charge to have it replaced, plus $10 or more to shipping. I will never buy anything made by Thomson again. They build poor quality products and then, even when problems are widespread, they do not stand behind them.

  2. After reading the reviews for this DVD player, I decided to write a review because I have had the same problems as other reviewers. Certain DVDs play fine in this DVD player, yet others skip or have sound interruptions during the movie - since I bought a new DVD player, I have had no problems with these same DVDs at all!

  3. I've had this DVD player for about a year now and have been completely satisfied with it. I don't have a fancy TV setup, nor surround sound, so to me "bells and whistles" aren't important... functionality and dependability are. And this player hasn't disappointed.

Soon after buying the unit I DID have problems playing certain DVDs, for reasons I still don't understand. However, after checking the RCA customer service website, I went through their Troubleshooter procedure, and it was recommended to try "soft" resetting the unit, which is accomplished with an easy button combo between the remote and the unit itself. I tried... the result? Played the problem DVD's perfectly. These DVD's still occasionally do not read, but resetting the unit in this manner has worked every time.

Some may see that as a hassle... and I guess in a way it is... but it happens VERY rarely, and is corrected in a matter of seconds (and hey, I've got to get up to put the DVD in anyways, so it's not like it's costing me extra energy).

Other than that I have had no problems with it. DBD's play well (other than a couple odd balls), audio CD's play well (including self-made CD-R's), the remote is full-functioned and simple.

All in all.... nice looking affordable, well-made, and dependable product.

    GOod stuff.

  4. The remote is dedicated to the player. This means the remote that comes with it is the only one that will work on it. The salesman said that it is a digital remote and that is why. I know this because the remote stopped working and I can't get another to control it. This means that if I want to control my perfectly good dvd player I need to get a new dvd player. Yes, I am lazy and don't want to have to get up to do ANYTHING with the player, that is what the remote is for! Know this if you are looking at this dvd player.

  5. This player has some good features like disc memory, but that falls short of it's downside: it won't play very many discs all the way through. Many discs will pause for a few seconds or stop playing. You have to rewind the player prior to the point of the pause then let it play. At that point it will play fine. That gets really annoying when you have to do it 3-4 times during a movie. Like others I thought that it was the disc, but after a trip home and playing some dvd's there then on this player I realized it was the player, not the discs.

I purchased this one for about $80.00 and feel very ripped off. I just got a Memorex dvd player from Kmart for 35.00 and it beats the RCA player hands down. Avoid this one.

  1. At first, I completely LOVED this dvd player because it played everything from everywhere, and did so everytime!... One year later, I relunctantly LIKED this dvd player, because it still played everything from everywhere, but no longer did it do so everytime!... Two years later, I totally LOATHE this dvd player, and the dirty, lousy, rotten, stinkin' company that made this P.O.S. dvd player, ("Just-What-I-Needed" is flippin' right!), because it won't play anything from anywhere at anytime, anymore!... And the company replied to me, when I asked about "BUYING A NEW REMOTE CONTROL", that I'd "NEED TO BUY A WHOLE NEW PLAYER"! How's THAT for something I did NOT need? "jWiN iS tHe DeViL!"

  1. Right now there is no excuse not to buy a Toshiba HD-A2 or HD-D2 player (which are practically the same with the exception of their names). Even if used as just an upconverting player, the D2 does a fantastic job outdoing the Samsung upscaling DVD player that it replaced. If you have Netflix, you can rent from a full library of HD titles. The DVD quality looks so great, you'll want to keep this one around even if Blu-ray emerges the winner. But with this player getting such a sweet price point, and getting to experience a few killer titles in true HD, blu-ray has a lot to be nervous about.

  2. This player produces as expected. The lack of multichannel analog output doesn't limit me as I use the HDMI to my receiver. If you do not have HDMI on your reciever this is not the player for you.

Images was great and after playing the 1st HD-DVD with it my wife commented on what a how clear the picture was.

My only dislike of the player was the time to open the dvd tray when 1st powering on the unit. It takes approx. 30 sec.

    Great price for HD-DVD

  1. I had this player for 2 months and it is already giving me problems. The picture quality is terrible. Green lines appear across the screen when a movie is playing. The player was great for the first 2 months. Good luck if you decide to take a chance with this player.

  2. I've had this DVD player for several months now and have had no problems with it. The picture and sound quality are great and the hook up is very easy. I use this player for my bedroom and do not have a home theatre system in there, but this player works fine. My only beef is that it does not play special features for certain dvds, like Memento. Otherwise, a great buy

  3. There are no negatives to say about this product. It is an excellent product, very easy to setup and operate. Would highly recoment it to anyone.

  4. Ive owned this dvd player for 2 years at least and never had a big problem yet. In this age of electronics that dont last at all-im pretty sure i got a good one here. The player has always started up and played just like its suppoed to, the remote works great (LOTS of buttons that i am not technical enough to care about) and the picture is very crisp and clear. i like that you can turn the player all the way off in the middle of a movie and when you turn it back on, it starts the movie back where you left off. I think the most important thing to say is, it is quite reliable.

The only cons i can say are that you cannot always operate the player without the remote. there is no "enter" button on the player, and the dvds wont start from the main menu until you get out the remote and hit enter.(there are all the other buttons on the player except this one) I dont know about everyone else, but im always losing remotes, and this is a pain to not be ablr to start it on the player.
    2) the player is wide across like 18" and not deep-about 12" so its either too wide to fit in a cabinet, or too short to sit any other devices on top of it. so it has to sit on top of everything, or by iteself. I guess it didnt stop me from buying it, and it works great which is the main thing, so ive been happy with it for the price. no need to spend more money on a better name brand, when this one works just as well!

  5. The only reason I quit using mine was I had to purchase a combo when my VHS machine went bad. This unit worked perfectly for me -- never had a problem.
