5 comments about Panasonic DMR-E65S DVD Recorder with SD Card Slot (DVD-RAM & DVD-R).
- Very happy that I got to archive my old home VHS to DVD with great results.
Great features:
This is an excellent entry-level DVD-recorder. The TV Guide feature is the reason to past over Panasonic cheaper brother the E55s which just have the VCR-plus feature. TV Guide is a simpler and free version to TiVo. It has an on-screen menu of the channels including title, time, info and the option to record. Sadly, TV Guide feature only work for antenna broadcasting and basic cable. Digital cable and satellite users might have to invest more money into a TiVo recording device (lack of component input here).
The recording quality is great, which is almost the same or lesser then the original, but never better. I transfer old VHS home video to this device and it was easy with excellent quality. Recording TV programs through the antenna is simple, but the quality depends on your reception. DVD-r is more common then DVD+r. I use XP or SP mode (1-2hrs) for VCR transfer, and LP or EP mode (4-8hrs) for TV program.
This is one of the most intelligence video devices I have own yet. There are so many option and setting to configure base on your needs. The SD card reader is a nice extra for this device. I have a Panasonic digital camera with a SD card so it is just plug and play. The manual is simple to follow and understand to figure this complex device.
The have not:
As an entry level recorder would mean this device have less of the advance input features. There are no component inputs which mean you can't recorder from higher quality image. No DV(firewire) input for newer digital camcorder. No hardrive for mix and match recording. The recorder is a 4-stars but the DVD playback is a 3.75-stars. The progressive scan has a lot of settings to customize from, but my Toshisba's DVD is a little smoother. The basic DVD-playback feature is just basic and limited. The old Toshiba has many features as zoom, slow forward, display length of the DVD, which I have yet figure/found. Slow boot time, but that is true to most recorders.
Panasonic quality is great. I have a Panasonic's HDTV for almost a year, a digital camera and they all are working fine with great results. I like Panasonic's pricing which is producing great quality for the price, but they leave out some of the more fancy features and style that Sony has that will jack up the prices. I use Verbatim's Digital Movie DVD-r at 4x and Panasonic's DVD-RAM, anything faster like 8x does not seem to work.
- For the price and the not so technology enabled person, this is a great peice of equipment. It was easy to set up and use. The only thing that may be a problem is the sd slot. I used this to see a slide show of my pics from my digital camera. The picture quality was not the best, but then this was only to review and edit my pics. Putting them on a disc, the picture quality is great. I am very happy with this product.
- In the year that I have had this model I have had to talk to Customer Support eight times. Not only did I have to call them to help me with a problem, I frequently had to wait a long time (over 45 minutes) to get someone on the phone. Once I was talking to someone I either had a really bad experience or a so-so experince. For the amount of technical trouble I have had with this machine, I would never buy another Panasonic product again.
- Although I have called Panasonic and gotten assistance, after 4 weeks I am still unable to get the on-screen TV Guide to work. I am technology-saavy, and even had a friend help me with the unit. No luck. Programming recording without the TV Guide is fine, but that defeats the purpose of buying this machine.
- "U99" Error Problem.Piece of junk, one can not do anything with this machine in presence of that error code. The Machine has not been even used for any rcording-brand new and I was using Panasonic Brand DVD-Ram.

5 comments about Toshiba SD-3800 Progressive-Scan DVD Player.
- After countless review reading for DVD players, I was set on either a Panasonic or Toshiba NON-PROGRESSIVE SCAN DVD player as my first. ... Luckily, I had a chance to buy this one WITH PRGRESSIVE SCAN..., so I grabbed it.
After pummeling the DVD player in its first 1-2 weeks of ownership with about 20 hours straight of Stargate SG-1 DVD collection viewing and rental movies, I can safely say that it's a great buy. The menus are easy to use for setup, and the unit features nice zoom and image capture features, if you need that stuff. The documentation for some of the features could be a little better, as I couldn't find the section on storing bookmarks or memorized DVD chapters for viewing later. That may be something that I'll find on my laptop DVD player and software rather than a standalone unit. Finally, the sound, through my piddly RCA-jack-only TV is VERY LOW. I have to turn the TV up about 5 extra notches to hear the dialogue on movies. There is a dialogue enhancement mode for sound, however, that helps with the quietest rentals that I've enjoyed. Bottom line -- a great DVD player, if you can get it at a [good] price. Too bad it doesn't come in black.
- Toshiba makes top-notch DVD players with an excellent reputation for outstanding performance as well as quality and reliability. The SD3800 has these desirable characteristics plus component video output for better picture quality and progressive scan technology for compatibility with HDTVs, all at a bargain price. You may not have an HDTV yet but you probably will have one within a year or two, so why not be prepared with a progressive scan DVD player when you can get one this good at such a low price? And the component video output will improve the picture quality even on non-HDTVs. This player is an outstanding performer at a terrific price.
- I bought the SD3800 to go with my Toshiba 57H82 HDTV. There was an obvious improvement in the picture and clarity over my old Toshiba 1600 which played many enjoyable DVDs. The SD3800 upconverts to 540 and that matches the Toshiba HDTV. It was easy to set up and has worked great for the last month. The remote is nice and large with easy access to buttons. It allows easy adjustment of audio settings and provides zoom controls that help you to fit the screen to your TV if you need it. It is nice and compact and fits well on top of my TV. There are many choices and you can find good info at [website]to help you make your decision.
- Great performance and picture, though has the annoying habit of occasionally locking up during load/unload, have to pull the power plug (and dismember entertainment center to get at it) in order to regain control.
- This thing locks up and skips on almost 75% of the disks I put in it, including brand new ones.
If it a rented disk with a few scratches, forget it. I end up using a free Apex someone gave me just to avoid this thing.

5 comments about RCA RC5240P DVD Player.
- DVD player stopped working after only about 15 hours of play (that's only 7-10 average movies). The sound garbled and the video began skipping. Sadly, I had owned it for quite some time before I began using it and the warranty had lapsed. RCA used to be a reliable brand but the quality of their CD and DVD players is now terrible and this one has to be, by far, the worst. Attempted cleaning the laser lens to no avail. Avoid this product. You'll get more use out a hundred bucks by burning it for heat.
- I purchased this unit on November 24, 2001 and, despite what you may read in many other reviews, it's still working and I have only minor complaints. When I purchased it, the price was about 50% higher; now at such a lowered price, you can take a chance with this unit. If you get 18 months or more use out of it, you got your money's worth. I have not experienced the horror stories that some other buyers have reported in their reviews, but that can be attributed to random luck.
Almost always, I am able to play any of my DVD's and VCD's. Occasionally, a disk will not "register" and the player acts like there is no disk present. I have to unload and reload a few times to get it to work. The most annoying fault is with the remote. At times, I would press a key and nothing happens. In a few instances, the action will take place many seconds later, sort of like it wants to think about it first before it will do my bidding. I think it's a programming error. In my opinion, the remote has too many buttons and I have mistakenly halted the movie when I only wanted to skip ahead at 2x speed. The video quality and audio quality are excellent. Setup and connection were troublefree. Unit is attractive in black although that makes the buttons and their labels difficult to read (I have the unit on a shelf at knee level). This is not a bare-bones product. You get the normal composite video lines, and the S-video outputs, and the component outputs. I don't have the tv that uses the S-video or component outputs, so I can not comment on the quality of those features on this dvd player. You get fast forward and reverse motion in 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x. It also does slow forward at 1/2 and 1/4. You can magnify the picture 2x and 4x - and then scroll around. If you have the money available and don't mind spending more, I would not recommend this to you. If you want a unit that works most of the time and are willing to risk having to replace this dvd player within a year or two, I can say go ahead and give it a try.
- I, like others, have had problems with this DVD player. It say's "No Disc" every time. I have had this DVD player for a couple months. Went through the online help with no luck. I contacted RCA, and was told it was a problem with the Player, and they would replace it with the same model. Great. Only at a cost to me of $39.95 plus S&H. That's an expensive DVD player. I already purchased this model once, and It's under warranty, then they want me to purchase it again. Duh.
- I had this DVD player for only about 3 months and it quit working, it kept saying LOAD. I called about how to fix it and they told me to buy a new one. I would not recommend this player!
- 100% junk. This machine is a piece of junk. I wish there was a choice of ZERO stars. This sat in a spare room and was very rarely used for several years and now that my daughter wants to use it in her room, it displays LOAD and then NO DISC -that's it. What a waste of money. I will never buy another RCA product.
