5 comments about Sharp DV-SR45U DVD Recorder with MP3 Playback.
  1. Using a DVD-RW (Not DVD+RW) ver1.1/ 2x speed it works great and is re-recordable and simple. Haven't found a DVD-R that works with it yet (it tells you in the manual which ones will work but I just couldn't find the DVD-R of the correct write speed in stores). Recording works instantly (like a VCR) but takes between 20secs to a minute after recording is stopped to write to disc.

  2. it works fine . but have to choose right type of dvd . just a few type dvd recordable is compatible with this dvd recorder .

  3. This is a very good recorder with strong editing capabilities. Both the DVD-R & RW format disks offer track-editing options suitable for basic or more event-specific recordings from several sources. Recording from VHS often rewards you with a quality that in fact appears better than the original.

It has a quirk regarding the cooling fan which is easy to circumvent. What you can not work around however is its inability to function outside of 4X media. Though you may have an easier time with 2X or 1X, the proper media is DVD-R 4X (MAX) 4.7GB for this machine. You will not find this information easy to come by otherwise. Such 4X disks appear close to extinction, as they have often been replaced in catalogs and on shelves by 1x-8x disks -- DO NOT BUY THESE -- which are not compatible with this machine. There are no firmware upgrades available for this model.

If you have a stack of 4X max. disks on hand or know a source that can provide you with such media, then you will be quite satisfied. Without a firmware upgrade however, this recorder will soon suffer a fate not unlike death.

  4. I just bought two. These machines replaced an old, very poor Phillips DVD recorder and all the VHS machines. Picture is great. I found it easy to use and had no problems with 1x, 2x, and 4x DVD-R's and 1x-2x DVD-RW's and they played fine in other DVD players. I don't know where the other reviewers shop, but I had little trouble finding both DVD-R's and DVD-RW's for this machine online AND at Office Depot, CompUSA, Staples, Best Buy and even Big Lots, and all at reasonable prices (CompUSA having the best selection and prices). It also played a variety of DVD+R's, DVD-R's, DVD-RW's, and regular DVD's. It did play a DVD+R/DL, but only one with just the movie and no menus (store bought DVD's played just fine). Tuner and timer recording work great and menus are easy to navigate. Like most Sharp products, the remote is ergonomic and easy to use.

Sure, DVD's and formatting takes quite a while and reading takes a few seconds, but nothing longer than my expensive Pioneer Elite DV-37. And it is a change from VHS, but this is not a lifetime product. I do think it is a big improvement over past DVD products.

  5. Absoulute garbage. I should have know better that to go Sharp so it serves me right that this DVD "recorder" only succesfully records half of the time and the other half it steals your money for the blank DVDs you buy.

I've had this thing for a year and a half and it's been nothing but trouble. There is no indication on the packaging that only 4X DVDs are required. After you search and search and finally find 4X DVDs(I had to get mine online) this thing turns half of them into coasters. No matter what brand DVD-R you use, it will only work half the time and you won;t know until after you think you've finished the recording.

And if it's after 90 days, forget it. Sharp charges you to send it to them, for a diagnostics, and estimate and repair.

The worst thing I ever bought in my entire life.

  1. I've had this player for almost 5 years now, and it's been very good to me since I originally purchased it. It hasnt had any compatibility issues, and usually played without skipping.

As of last week or so, I began having problems with skipping on dvds. I presume I'll have to open it and manually clean the lens. After 5 years, I cant say I dont expect it to some degree. I'm not too worried, I think a simple cleaning will solve the issue.

I do recommend you buy this, it's a reasonably priced vcr/dvd player, looks nice, and works pretty well. Take good care of it and it should last years.

5 comments about Toshiba SD-H400 Combination Progressive-Scan DVD Player and TiVo Digital Media Server.
  1. This Tivo unit rocks. It is great. No problems with it yet, and we have had it for over 3 months. We thought TIVO was just glorified VCR recording, but we were wrong. It changed the way we watch TV.

The set-up is easy, and the phone support has been great.

    A VERY good deal, INHO.

  2. Let me start this review by saying that I ran across this item at a QVC Outlet store and it was EXTREMELY inexpensive - about $70. I had never had TiVo before so I figured for that price - "what the hell?" That said, since then I've added another Series2 TiVo to my home and just love TiVo...

    The Good:
    - I've seen other reviews of this product that criticize the remote, but I really like it. It is fairly large, but the layout of the nav and select buttons is very intuitive. That said, there are about 20 buttons that I never use.
    - TiVo in general, rules. Not so much specific to this product, but I, like numerous others before me, agree that "TiVo will change your life". The days of scheduling time home for your own "must see TV" are over - watch it when you have time, skip the filler and commercials!
    - Wireless TiVo (Home Media Option) is excellent - I had NO PROBLEMS getting this set up on my wireless network (unlike some other reviewers). One key is to follow TiVo's recommendation for wireless adapters TO THE LETTER. Plain-jane USB wireless adapters won't work - buy one of the recommended models. Once set up, you can stream music from your PC and view your digital pictures through the TiVo, two excellent features.
    - My unit has worked flawlessly since I got it - no freezes, crashes or other problems.

    The Bad:
    - I'm really irritated by the DVD copy protection setup on this unit. If you want to watch a DVD, you can't have a VCR inline or the Macrovision copy protection is triggered, brightening and darkening the screen to deter taping of DVD's. Problem is, there's a good chance you might want to tape some shows from your TiVo, which means you need to jury-rig a setup to work around this nasty little problem. It's kind of moronic, which is typical of the Movie industry.
    - Switching from TiVo mode to DVD mode takes too long.
    - It's a fairly large unit, depthwise, and you may want to measure your cabinets before purchase. Mine was slightly too shallow and I needed to get the drill out for "modifications" in order to make it fit.
    - This is one of the few TiVo models that has "Basic TiVo" built-in. Admittedly, Basic TiVo is an extremely hobbled version of the full TiVo service, but if you don't want to spend the money each month, this can be a nice feature. In addition, it gives you time to get used to the TiVo and its main functions before setting up the full service.

All in all, I'm very, very satisfied with the product and service.

  3. As is my general experience with Toshiba products, this is a quality item. It is constructed to outlast the warranty, which is an important consideration in the increasingly disposable world of consumer electronics. As an early adopter, this product introduced TiVo into my home. Now, I wouldn't have a TV without it. TiVo reduces the frustration and increases both the pleasure and the usefulness of television.

However, my advice is to skip the DVD player/TiVo combination and buy the Toshiba TiVo/DVD burner combination (Toshiba RS-TX60 DVD Recorder with 160 GB TiVo Series2 Digital Video Recorder), which enables one to burn the keepers (at 24X) without the mare's nest of cables that crisscross my video room.

This unit works flawlessly except for a time lag when shifting from TiVo/live broadcast to DVD, which is quite long --- too long for my taste. I hope that this defect is removed in the newer model. As soon as someone scorns my advice and buys my used SD-H400, I'll report my thoughts on the burner model...jt

  4. I've had so many problems with this model that it's embarassing. it was incredibly difficult getting it to use a USB adapter (even according to cust. support), and the clock kept on drifting off so that in 2 months time it was so inaccurate you missed half a 30min sitcom recording (needed to repeat hard reset until it "caught' the right time). once this trick didn't work i returned it for repair, with the refurbished replacement unit not even booting up. i sent that one back too, and just now got a message from toshiba that the unit i sent needs to be replaced as well, and offered me a credit.
I'm genuinely embarrassed at the time i've spent on this. the ONLY reason i'm spending time writing this is that i'm on hold...to get my refund.

  5. I HAVE OWNED THIS SINCE 2003 WHEN IT CAME OUT. NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER AND WOULD BUY IT AGAIN. HOWEVER, IT WILL NOT PLAY THE NEWEST RELEASES (2007 AND ON) OF SONY DVD RELEASESAS. IT CANNOT READ THE DISK THROUGH THE NEW ANTI-PIRATE TECHNOLOGY SONY IS USING (I HAVE SPOKE TO TOSHIBA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY ARE NOT MAKING AN UPDATE). BASIC TIVO IS GREAT WITH NO FEE. FACTOR IN BUYING ANOTHER OR KEEPING YOUR CURRENT DVD PLAYER AROUND TO PLAY DVD'S AS THE OTHER COMPANIES ARE PROBUBALLY GOING TO UP THEIR ANTI-PIRATING SOFTWARE SOON TOO.
