  1. I purchased this item. Have had noting but issues with it freezing up when I try to record.

  2. This recorder is quite a workhorse. I bought one in Walmart in May of 2005 and have transferred hundreds of videos to DVD with it. While it now occassionally hangs up due to the high usage I have put it through as well as its age-overall it still is a solid machine. The one minor problem the machine seems to have is that it messes up on R disks on a regular basis but only occassionally does it mess up on RW which you can simply erase and reuse. So I now only use RW disks with the machine and thus have very few problems! The main feature I like with the unit which I have not been able to find on other combination vcr-dvd recorders is the ability to "edit" RW disks. The particular neat feature about this machine is that( if you record programs off the air or have videos which have commercials already on the tape) you can "HIDE" the commercials upon playback. In other words once the disk has been "edited" and you play it back you can choose to either watch it with the commercials viewable or watch the disk with the commercials not viewable (ie hidden). It is quite a neat feature.

I wish other recorders out there had this particular feature.

  3. I've owned this DVD recorder for about 2 years. When it was new, it was a good unit with some nice editing features not found on other less expensive models. I transferred many VHS videos, and recorded hundreds of TV programs to disc with great results. For the past 3 or 4 months, though, it has been rejecting an increasing majority of blanks as having a "disc error" and not accepting them to record. I now have 200+ blank discs, and cannot record anything. So this is a good machine, but don't expect it to function for much more than a year.

  1. This DVD player is junk. I have had several movies that will not play in it. I lived with that. Now it plays through perhaps 10 to 20 minutes of an audio CD and just shuts off mid-disc. RCA/Thomson customer service website and phone help is a joke. It is beyond the 3-month replacement warranty period so I must pay $50 charge to have it replaced, plus $10 or more to shipping. I will never buy anything made by Thomson again. They build poor quality products and then, even when problems are widespread, they do not stand behind them.

  2. After reading the reviews for this DVD player, I decided to write a review because I have had the same problems as other reviewers. Certain DVDs play fine in this DVD player, yet others skip or have sound interruptions during the movie - since I bought a new DVD player, I have had no problems with these same DVDs at all!

  3. I've had this DVD player for about a year now and have been completely satisfied with it. I don't have a fancy TV setup, nor surround sound, so to me "bells and whistles" aren't important... functionality and dependability are. And this player hasn't disappointed.

Soon after buying the unit I DID have problems playing certain DVDs, for reasons I still don't understand. However, after checking the RCA customer service website, I went through their Troubleshooter procedure, and it was recommended to try "soft" resetting the unit, which is accomplished with an easy button combo between the remote and the unit itself. I tried... the result? Played the problem DVD's perfectly. These DVD's still occasionally do not read, but resetting the unit in this manner has worked every time.

Some may see that as a hassle... and I guess in a way it is... but it happens VERY rarely, and is corrected in a matter of seconds (and hey, I've got to get up to put the DVD in anyways, so it's not like it's costing me extra energy).

Other than that I have had no problems with it. DBD's play well (other than a couple odd balls), audio CD's play well (including self-made CD-R's), the remote is full-functioned and simple.

All in all.... nice looking affordable, well-made, and dependable product.

    GOod stuff.

  4. The remote is dedicated to the player. This means the remote that comes with it is the only one that will work on it. The salesman said that it is a digital remote and that is why. I know this because the remote stopped working and I can't get another to control it. This means that if I want to control my perfectly good dvd player I need to get a new dvd player. Yes, I am lazy and don't want to have to get up to do ANYTHING with the player, that is what the remote is for! Know this if you are looking at this dvd player.

  5. This player has some good features like disc memory, but that falls short of it's downside: it won't play very many discs all the way through. Many discs will pause for a few seconds or stop playing. You have to rewind the player prior to the point of the pause then let it play. At that point it will play fine. That gets really annoying when you have to do it 3-4 times during a movie. Like others I thought that it was the disc, but after a trip home and playing some dvd's there then on this player I realized it was the player, not the discs.

I purchased this one for about $80.00 and feel very ripped off. I just got a Memorex dvd player from Kmart for 35.00 and it beats the RCA player hands down. Avoid this one.

  1. I've had this DVD for a year, with absolutely no problems. Hooked into my surround sound system, I have very good sound for DVD's and CD's.

I hate to tinker with my electronics once I get them set up, and, thankfully, I've never had to pull out my manual since I got it connected.

With optical outputs for the surround sound and a choice of s-video or optical video outputs, it was a snap to set up, also.

  2. Hi

i bought a Samsung DVD M301 dvd player and i lost the manual, and i need to configure the remote control, but i can't find it, i need to know if you can send it to me please, or if you know a page where i can donload it

    Thank You Very Much

    David

  3. This is a bargan DVD player. for the price, you can't expect much more than you get. The remote could be less combersome without the joy stick and the disks could load faster, but hey. The mp3 playback was clearly put in as an after thought, it plays them, but there is no randomization option for your listening pleasure. What i really like about this dvd player is that it works and doesn't give me any problems, but most of all that it has played every dvd i've thrown at it including dvds from china. It also plays vcds with flying colors. If your looking for a good mid range dvd player, this is a good buy.

  4. I got this unit from e-bay and it was worth the effort I spent in trying to outbid other e-bay members. The video output is excellent (I hoooked it up to my 31" Philips HDTV) and the audio reproduction is really as advertised - it simulates surround sound as if It were connected to a surround system. It plays cds and cd-r without a hitch and sounds great on my Kenwood VR-6060.

  5. I had this DVD player for years and never had a problem with it. It played all DVD media I ever put into it perfectly.

I would recommend it to anybody.

  1. I have owned my DVD player for less than 2 years, and this weekend it died. I pushed the stop button and everything locked up. I can now join the mass of people that have had nothing but trouble with this unit. Joy for me!

  2. Add me to the list of poor [people] who owned this product for less than 2 years (but just long enough for the warranty to run out) before expiriencing a complete breakdown. While watching a typical no-thrills DVD I was suddenly left with no sound. Imagine my joy. Choose another unit unless you plan on upgrading within the 2-year lifecycle that many of us have already discovered.

  3. Like a lot of the other reviews the sound went dead and nothing we tried has helped. This thing must have been built with junk components. How else can one explain the high frequency of defective players. Toshiba just lost another customer.

  4. We had this dvd play for less than a year and had to send it out to be repaired. The audio completely went out. About 6 to 8 months later, it went out again. Before that, if you could get the darn thing to turn on, you couldn't get it to shut off. It was a total waste of money and I have totally lost faith in Toshiba dvd players. The next Toshiba we got was the same way, and not even the same model. Don't waste your money!

  5. My SD2700 has always worked fine. My only complaint is that it will not play the DVD+R format (probably because it was built before that was invented?) so I have to go buy DVD-R and rerecord my home movies onto that.

  1. I bought the unit approximately 18 months ago and it suddenly will not recognize any discs placed in the carousel (spins but reads 'No Disc', whether brand new or previously used, or CDs or DVDs. Although I have yet to contact Sony about possible fixes for the machine, comments by other purchasers have not been encouraging. It is likely my next DVD player will not be a Sony.

  2. Well I will start with the positive. I purchased this unit the last part of May of 2002. and until this last week (06-05-06) It has been a VERY good and reliable product. The unit has more features than the average person will use and WAS very reliable for anything I used it for. I began getting a no disc error or insert disc message and thought ok nothing big needs the lens cleaned. Well I bought a 10.00 Maxell DVD Lense cleaner last night at wal-mart and it would even read that. I called Circuit City (store of purchase) Guess what out of warranty but call Sony. Called Sony "We have an exchange for that item of 141.00. I didn't pay that much for it newhat the heck...I am very upset with Sony and there quality of workmanship/products. As far as I am concerned I will not be purchasing or recommending their products for anyone.

  3. I've had this player for four years and haven't had any problems with it. I'm about to upgrade my TV to an HD unit, and, though this DVD player has no HDMI jack, it does have component video jacks that will work.

I don't think I'd buy this today, since HD formats are starting to come out, but it's been a good player for general use. How nice is it to have one box for CDs and DVDs?

  4. I bought this DVD Player with a complete surround system in 2001 and it has worked perfectly until last month when I accidentally kicked the tray. DO NOT DO THIS. It caused damage to the tray. If you need repairs to your Sony DVD Player, DO NOT SEND IT TO Sony Customer Service in Laredo, TX. The lied to me about fixing it and replaced it with a cheap, used and scratched version. I was told on the phone that I would get a refund, a mailing label to send back the DVD player that they sent me, and I would receive my old player. When e-mailing them, all I get are pre-written messages thanking me for my time. I have written the state attorney general in Texas for further action. Find a reputable dealer in your hometown instead.

  5. Bought this unit because I have another Sony DVD player that has worked great for 10+ years. This newer unit worked great for about a year, then started to power off during movies. Now it no longer works at all. Scans thru all 5 DVD's then says NO DISC error message. Contacted Sony repair shop who basically let me know that it would be just cheaper for me to buy one of their newer DVD players since it will be the same price if I decided to ship this product and repair the Laser. Not sure if the Sony line is as good a product as they used to be from all the Forum postings I've been reading lately.

  1. where to start?

the worst part was when I started trying to copy old home videos over to DVD. A few did fine, most would suddenly stop with a weird error message about "video input changing". No error code, nothing in manual. Called toshiba...they knew the problem before I described it. Machine will react to any irregularity, stretch, fold, skip, in an old tape and think that its COPY PROTECTED!!!!!!! so it errors out and stops. Toshiba says of course since they are concerned manufacturers and worried about illegal copying, there is nothing they can do about it. I tried a work around by using a separate VCR, but same thing. Can't tell you how many blank DVDs i ruined that now having a bit of a tape recorded on it. Their suggestion? Dub the old video tape onto a new video tape. (and lose a generation of quality). Not what I had in mind. Don't protect me from myself and my own tapes that play fine, and are totally legal!

next, I agree with all the previous posts about it having a mind of its own. It powers up, down, changes channels, records, or not, and even opens/closes the tray when it darn well feels like it, and not a moment before. Really frustrating. A good case of new technology that goes slower than old technology.

Plus this is the only DVD player I have ever encountered that doesn't remember your playback position if you stop a movie, then turn off the power and then want to return to the place you left off previously in a movie. Nope...back to the FBI warning you go every time!

The final clincher is that I bought this based on the technical information, and I had just bought a toshiba HD TV (which actually I really like a lot!). One apparently stupid assumption I had was that the Toshiba TV remote would operate the Toshiba DVD player....wrong. Not even stop, play and pause. I wasted a good 30 minutes twice trying every code they listed. And then another phone call. answer? "the engineers must have had a good reason"....

run away! I sold mine within 60 days.

  2. I thought I had researched DVD recorders carefully. Wow. Was I wrong. This machine has the following major flaws:

    1. It cannot record most ATSC Over-the-air TV stations in Los Angeles. We have more than a dozen channels, and this unit registers a FALSE positive for CPRM copy protection, such that you cannot record all but two channels in los angeles. i even spoke to the chief engineer at the local PBS station, to confirm that they ARE NOT send the CPRM signal out. So, as a HD time-shifter---USELESS!

    2. The record quality is terrible, except at the XP (1 hour speed)

    3. The menu system is extremely non-intuitive and cumbersome.

The one positive is that the playback picture resolution is GREAT. (but the is the most EXPENSIVE player I've ever used).

We've been loyal to Toshiba for 8 years, but no more.

  3. This machine worked good for the first two weeks, then I noticed that it would just freeze and I'd have to unplug it to get it to respond. it does not seem fully compatible when you watch a DL dvd then switch out to watch a 4.7 gb DVD, Often it loses the signal and I have to unplug it yet again for a few minutes to get it back online. It is very frustrating to spend my money on electonics and more often than not end up taking them back cause its defective or just trashing it. I CAN NOT recommend this DVD player for any reason and Toshiba is err... was my favorite company to buy electroncs from since Sony now Sucks..

  4. I bought it to do hands-off conversion of my videotape collection to DVD, and it does it without any problems. Put in the tape, put in the DVD, make a few choices, and walk away. Come back to finalize the disk and you're done. No problems with copy protection on any tapes so far, good color/contrast/audio on all copies. It has a lot of other features I haven't needed (yet) so I can't comment on those, but it does this perfectly. Manual isn't all that confusing, despite some other reviewers' complaints.

  5. I had 2 goals: Be able to watch the rare VCR, and be able to record tv programs to dvd, as needed. Hence, this unit, which (as advertised) should be able to accomplish either.
This thing is more finicky than Morris the Cat.
Expect major headaches, and a set-up time of >30 minutes EVERY time you make an additional attempt to record something with this thing. (The success of the project I'm working on at this moment: not yet determined.)
Sometimes you can't even open the dvd drawer. Sometimes it pops closed again before you've inserted the dvd. It seems to respond to its own remote with very random success. You may be lucky, you may not. Tomorrow expect different results. Right now, I'm rescanning cable channels as it seems to have lost its willingness to recognize anything above 20.
I am not really THAT dumb. I should be able to use a basic electronic device. This one is possessed. I urge you to look elsewhere.

  1. we purchased this dvd player a year ago and have not been pleased since we first began using it. it freezes on the majority of our dvd's, both rentals and new, and now it refuses to play any dvd's or cd's at all. we are looking for a new dvd player and in looking at other reviews it seems that a variety of dvd players and all brands are subject to these problems. i hate to think this is the way of the future. videos seem so much easier to use.

  2. I bought this DVD player about a year ago. I find that it does freeze on rare occassion (only when you first put the dvd in) but when I stop and restart the dvd it will play fine. It seems to freeze if the DVD is turned on with the DVD in it before you have it on the correct channel to play dvds on your TV. But I think that for the money it is a good buy and I have had no other problems with this DVD player, and I think that the freezing is very minimal.
