5 comments about Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive Scan DVD Player Black.
- I got this player when my panasonic spindle motor died (new motor $35, and I'd have to install it versus new player for $50). Does everything it is suppose to do, but you have to use the remote to bounce around cd tracks. I haven't tried the jpeg feature yet. It is odd that it does not have an optical digital hook up, but the coax digital works fine (cable not included).
So for $50 this is a good stop gap with many features until Blu-ray players reach a reasonable price.
- For a reasonable price, our Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive-Scan DVD Player is a fine DVD player. Let's just hope that it lasts longer than our previous DVD player or at least until we move up to a high definition unit.
- This was reputed to play beat up Netflix discs better than others. I've only had a couple of skips and not refusals to play since I started using it. It indeed plays discs that will gag my old Phillips player. I don't see a difference in picture quality.
- This is a great product if you're looking for a DVD player that gives you crisp & clear picture. I invited my family over for a day of movies & all were impressed with this Sony DVD player.
- Pros
Sony has no trouble playing problem disks that plagued my other players. But, it also doesn't play a few disks my other players struggle to play.
Sony menu functions are very well integrated compared to the hodge-podge look of lesser brands making it easier to use this player without reading a manual.
Installation is very easy. Plug the cables depending on what you use, component video, digital or line-outs. The power cable is not removable. There is no HDMI jack, since its maximum resolution is 480p via component video.
The case is all black, with 4 buttons difficult to see against the black case. The DVD tray opens slower, but is quieter when it runs. The ELD display is far clearer and more informative about the status of the disk or the chapter playing.
Images, sharpness and colors are superb on default settings. Sony includes manual or preset image adjustments to maximize its output.
When powered ON, the Sony will resume playback from whence you stopped for up to 6 separate disks.
It has has on/off and volume control for TVs in the DVD remote.
Variable play from 1.4x to 0.5x speed, but with sound.
Sony has sound function that takes the basic output of 2 speakers and tries to emulate surround sound.
Sony will create thumbnails of each DVD chapter independent of the DVD menus. This helps quite a bit in home made DVDs that have no menus.
Cons:
Remote is well laid out, with similar function buttons set near each other but in opposite directions for opposite functions, i.e., rewind left, forward, right. However, like many el-cheapo DVD players, the buttons are too small and one cannot differentiate functions purely by feel. You have to gaze at the buttons to read the function.
All advanced functions are controlled by the remote, so its indispensable.
Conclusion:
480p quality is good enough to appreciate on 32" or less HDTV sets until you upgrade to a 46" and over 1080p DVD player. Although Sony explicitly mentions it has support for copy protection schemes built right into the data [ e.g. the video file or image, not just the disk], I have not yet encountered data that would not play.

5 comments about Pioneer DV-400V-K Multi-Format 1080p HDMI Upscaling DVD Player.
- I bought this player about a month ago and find that it really does provide an excellent picture. My only complaint is the lack of a power on indicator. Did someone at Pioneer overlook this potential annoyance? My work-around is to power on, wait about 5 seconds, press the open tray button, and then set the tv source. Don't let this minor annoyance stop you from buying this DVD player. If I could, I would have rated it at 4-1/2 stars.
- A great DVD player and lots of different DVD formats will play on it. They all load quickly (3-5 seconds to read a disk) as compared to my old APEX model that could take minutes to figure out what the DVD format was. The only small complaint with this Pioneer is that when you hit the power button, the DVD player remains dark and quiet for 6-8 seconds as it (apparently) warms up. I have wondered on occasion if I actually did indeed pushed the power button, since the on-response is not immediate. Not a deal killer by any means. Love it otherwise.
- Only problem I have with this upconverting DVD is that it does not have as optical output. Had to change my wiring setup for my home theater to accomodate. Better than the Samsung unit I am replacing. Will probably get more units for the other rooms that dont have surround.
- Bought this DVD player before Blu-ray won out. It gives a great upscaled 1080p picture using all my old standard DVDs. The DIVx player and picture viewer are nice side features as well.
- Easy enough to work dvd player. Had to fiddle around with the menu to set it to 1080p (does not start as default). Upconverting does improve signal slightly, but its not that amazing. It seems to depend on age of dvd its upconverting (ie old movies still don't get the crystal clear/sharp signals of new cgi type movies)

5 comments about OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH Audio.
- Recently the first DVD player I ever owned, a refurbished Toshiba, died an unpleasant death leaving me in the market. I don't own a HD tv, although that purchase is in the foreseeable future, and felt that the blue-ray costs were just too high to justify, even though I understand they will play regular and blue-ray discs. I did a Google search for best DVD players and came across the Oppo brand. I had never heard of it but it got great reviews as a higher end machine. I looked over several model options and the 980 seemed to fit my bill the best.
Right off the picture seemed better, even on my older sony tube machine. The sound, running through my pioneer home theater system was fantastic. The set up was a little confusing (that could be me) but not difficult. The remote works fine and the machine automatically synched to my pioneer remote as well. The only niggle I have is that occasionally the settings will reset to the factory settings for sound leaving me with no sound. The first time this happened I freaked out by once I figured out the problem it was easy to fix. As a note this has only happened a couple of time.
Overall a great machine which I would buy again in a blink.
- This is an A-1 player. It arrived well packaged and looks sleek and well manufactured. I hooked up the HDMI to my Sharp Aquos and was playing DVDs within 5 minutes of receipt. It offers complete control of various picture enhancements via the remote. You might pay a little more...but you get a LOT more for your money! This is one DVD player that is highly recommended.
- I was not familiar with Oppo before, but a review on CNET and user reviews on Amazon convinced me to try it. Oppo's customer service was great. I told them about my plasma display device and they recommended the 980, although I was prepared to buy the 981. When I hooked it up and put in a DVD my younger brother was there who is also into his gadgets. His reaction to the picture was WOW and he has a nice setup. A day or two later he was telling a friend about my DVD player and mentioned that it was a name he was not familiar with. His friend asked, "is it an Oppo?". He had one as well.
Unit came packed very well. Only issue was the remote. A lot of small buttons of a similar shape. Not bad, but nothing great. No problem, since I'll replace that with a universal. I'd buy the 980 again.
- I wish I could give the Oppo 980 a perfect score. Amazon did its usual quick and professional delivery - and I hastily set up the player in my listening room. It's paired with a NAD receiver and B&W speakers.
The setup went without a hitch. Playing DVD movies and a Diana Krall concert simply blew me away in sight and sound.
But then I got out some of my favorite redbook CDs - and that's where the trouble started. Insert the disc and hit "play," and after a pause - WHAT? The player cut off the first note or even half-note on track #1 before settling down. Disc after disc - same problem.
At first I thought I'd done something wrong - but then I e-mailed the Oppo service department, and got a near-instant reply. They said the 980 players all do that - and that they do not have a solution at the moment.
I thought of returning it to Amazon - but decided to wait, in hopes of a firmware upgrade from Oppo. Please, Oppo, Fix This Problem!
Aside from that, I love the Oppo 980.
- I bought this as a transport a 192kHz 2 channel audio DAC. This machine will output 192kHz audio via it audio digital output. Well, I just love it. Picture is terrific. Couldn't be more happy.

- yeah, i had a toshiba for a bit, it died horribly. it wouldn't sync the voice and the video. this player works perfectly. it is awsome! BUY IT!!! unless you want upconverting or blu-ray or multiple disks...
- Purchased this player to replace an old one: after inserting a DVD and the image appeared, wherever there is high contrast there is an accompanying buzzing noise that cannot be eliminated. When the picture contrast is 'medium' or moderate, the buzz is not so apparent. I won't bother to return it because that would be more trouble than it is worth but will think twice when purchasing a second one for one of my other television locations.
- We loved this DVD player--while it lasted. It was easy to use and the sound and picture quality were both good. But after three months of fairly light use, when we tried to play anything, we got a message saying "no disc". Nothing we did to fix the problem worked. Sony offered to send us a reburbished model, which would cost $35 plus shipping, which was almost as much as it cost to begin with. Essentially the player and Sony customer support was worthless. But before we just threw the DVD player away, we thought we'd try it one more time. This time the message kept saying "cannot play disc." The tray that holds the disc is plastic and feels flimsy, which is probably the problem. So after such a short time will have to buy a new DVD player. It certainly won't be another SONY.
- I bought this in early January 2008. For the first 3 months it has been fine, but over the last month it has progressed from freezing infrequently to not being able to play any disc at all. Now when I place a disc in the player disc it loads for about 10 minutes and then I get a message that the disc is dirty, even if the disc is brand new and absolutely pristine. It's going directly into the trash bin.

5 comments about Philips DVP5140 Multiformat DVD Player with DivX, MP3, Windows Media Support.
- My original order was of the wrong type of DVD Player. I returned the original order with the Online paperwork provided for by Amazon and reordered the present DVD Player, (a multi-regional player). The machine I received was exactly what I wanted. It arrived quickly and performs well. Iam pleased with the merchandise and with the price I paid for said DVD Player. As usual I am quite pleased with the support I gotfrom Amazon and I intend to use your services in the future.
- I had to return this item, because it was advertised in the wrong section. I was searching for a multi region DVD player to play european
movies, and this DVD player came up among others as a result of the search. I purchased it, and it turned out it was not a multi region player at all, so I returned it and purchased another real multi region player. It would be helpful if everyhting would be advertised where it belonged.
- Only 2 things missing from this DVD player. I'm shocked that they are missing, and I didn't know they would be so sorely missed: NO Fast-Forward and Rewind buttons! You can skip ahead to the next chapter or go back to a previous chapter, but NOT zooming through forward or backward.... Never thought I would have to look for such buttons before buying a player...
- Plays anything- i like except for the remote which works only up really close.
Maybe new batteries - the ones that came with are exceptionally cheap.
- Just thought I'd add something as an "old guy" who finds a lot of tech stuff pretty scary. I was really hesitant to buy this because I needed something that would play my Region 2 DVDs. but this wasn't ready to play them out of the box. I've always had bad luck when I had to do anything to make something "work", but in this case I just followed the instructions that some kind soul laid out in the first review of this product, and I had no problems whatsoever turning this into a mutiformat player, that plays everything I've tried to play from Region 2.
The only reason I took one star away is because it really does have a terrible remote. Other than that I'm very happy with this (especially for the price).

- The DVD player works very well. Picture is exceptional. The battery life is excellent. A little disappointed with the sound from the speakers, but it suffices.
- The screen resolution is very good. I have played DVDs, VCDs, music CDs and am glad of the choice I made.
- I'd definately highly recommend this player for general and air-travel use entertainment. The picture is superb, sound and controls are effectly positioned.
A winner!
- I have not had this product for very long, but I already love it. It has a gorgeous picture and I love that it plays both DVDs and CDs. The sound from the built-in speakers seems a tad "tinny"-sounding to me, but it wasn't particularly bothersome. With headphones, the sound is great. It is very easy to use. I also love having the remote control and look forward to taking it in the car or wherever. So far, I have been extremely pleased with this product.
- I admit to not being very astute when it comes to tech stuff. But I simply got so sick and tired of the hassle in hooking one-thing-up-to-another-thing to just sit back, relax and enjoy. Now I can do all that with ease anywhere and enjoy my favorite movies and instructional programs with the most superb picture quality possible along with its fantastic portable ease-of-use, and truly long-life battery time. Moreover, even though it was a bit more than I wanted to spend at the outset, I am delighted that my wallet went that extra mile because this is a truly solid investment that will provide lovely viewing, listening and learning - like the song says...as time goes by.

5 comments about Sony DVP-NS700H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player Black.
- Works very well up scaling to 1080P and for the price it was worth it. It is an intermediate step for now until Blue-Ray is affordable.
- I purchased this DVD player to pair up with my Vizio 37" HDTV. Using the $9.99 "Cables to go" HDMI cable, setup was less than 5 minutes and it provided a crystal clear picture. The setup was simple and the remote control was intuitive to use. I could notice a huge difference in quality from my previous Sony DVD player (7 years old) with component connection. For a total cost of $90 you can breathe new life in your DVD collection and save a lot of money if you don't want to invest in Blu-Ray technology right away.
- Great DVD player. Upscales your regular DVD collection to play on 1080p flat screen televisions. DVD player is light and compact and has one HDMI connection for upscaling. If you have a Sony Bravia LCD flat screen television its remote functions will work with both units.
Price is competitive and DVD player has functioned correctly since I got it around 3 weeks ago.
Can't go wrong getting this unit for regular DVD playing.
- I have watched 2 movies on this and my new 52 inch 1080p HD TV. This player seems to do a really nice job. Smooth and really great detail. The owner reviews of upscalling DVD players on the AVS forums recommend a different player that is about two times the cost of this one. It is hard to see how it could be better! But I am not an expert and I guess I will never know since I already bought this one.
For cost less than a C-note, I do not think you would go wrong with this upscaling DVD player. Go for it!
- I recently reviewed the NS57 480p Sony, and its amazing they are nearly identical in function, making them easy to learn and use. All you need to do appreciate 1080p quality is to use the HDMI jack, and leave the rest to the player, automatically. With Blu-Ray now the higher level format, if this DVD player lasts 5 years, this could be the last DVD player you'll ever own as we await more Blu-Ray releases.
The only major difference between this Sony and the NS57 are the buttons are laid more to the top of the player, and the extra output jacks at back. The unit thus, is 1/4" wider in width.
Pros
Sony has no trouble playing problem disks that plagued my other players. But, it also doesn't play a few disks my other players struggle to play.
Sony menu functions are very well integrated compared to the hodge-podge look of lesser brands making it easier to use this player without reading a manual.

Images, sharpness and colors are superb on default settings! Sony includes manual or preset image adjustments to maximize its output; aspect ratio can be forced to 16:9 or 4:3 or taken as automatic.
When powered ON, the Sony will resume playback from whence you stopped for up to 6 separate disks.
It has has on/off and volume control for TVs in the DVD remote.
Variable play from 1.4x to 0.5x speed, but with sound.

- Great DVD Player.
I use it with my 500GB hard drive - works great!
- I purchased this unit b/c I wanted something that would play NTSC and PAL DVDs, as well as .avi files. The USB port is a cool feature as well. The user interface, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Whether directly pressing buttons on the unit (e.g. to open the disc tray) or via the remote, the unit is slow to react and several button presses are sometimes necessary. This also mays it frustrating to do simple pauses, rewinds, return to menu, etc. I would not purchase this unit again. I would look for one which similarly handled a large range of video formats, but with a MUCH sleeker user interface. It's like they created a great unit, then dropped the ball on the packaging.
- A different DVD player I tried did not communicate the aspect ratios to my flat screen TV over HDMI. I would have to adjust my TV or player settings for each dvd, depending on whether it is widescreen or letterbox.
I returned that one and bought this. I've been using it for almost a year, and the player correctly displays DVDs with all aspect ratios on my TV over HDMI connection, without need for manual adjustment for each DVD.
I have no major complaints about this player, and it is a great buy.
- I bought this because I wanted to play multi region DVD's (from the UK). I found a short sequence of codes online that took about two minutes to input and then the player was unlocked for all DVD regions. Much cheaper than buying from an online retailer who does it for you. Good picture, good sound. Small machine. Only the remote and menus let it down slightly.
- This unit is great because it does what its supposed to do.
Movie quality is great (1080 upconvert). Setup is very easy (I hate how complex some basic gadgets are becoming - getting old?!). The unit is sleak and actually looks very good. It plays all regions (the reason I bought it - instructions to set this up available online). It has an added incredible 'bonus' USB feature which means I can play *.avi (full movie) files from my flash drive at excellent quality. All standard cable outputs supported including HDMI.
For $60, I don't think anything else needs to be said.

5 comments about Samsung DVD-1080P8 1080p Upconverting DVD Player.
- After a few weeks, everything seems ok with this DVD player. I do notice better quality on my LCD TV using non-HD/BluRay DVDs. The only drawback is how long it takes to turn on and play a DVD; seems to take a long time to load. The first time I used it, it locked up, but it's worked flawlessly since.
- I received this as a bonus with a television purchase. It was a nice little addition. The picture isn't perfect, but I have no complaints and acknowledge that better cables could improve the appearance. No serious complaints.
- After about 2 months of moderate usage the player became very particular about the disc quality, and only played new DVD's. Now it barely plays them. I would not buy another Samsung DVD Product.
- I am very satisfied with this product and I received it in a very timely manner.
- Received this free with my new Samsung 40" LCD. The DVD player is the cheapest one I've ever had in terms of overall physical quality. I returned the 1st one due to excessive noise when loading and playing, also kept freezing up. Door does not open completely, only 90% so you either need to pull it open completely or slide the DVD into the slot before closing else it will jam up. both players had the door issue so I assume they all do. If I had to pay for this item I would have returned it and bought something else. I can't say I really notice any significant performance improvement over my 8 year old standard DVD player, even without the up converting. Remote seems to lag after pushing the buttons and you also need to push them down firmly. I have nothing good to report on this product besides it was free.
