4 comments about Samsung HT-Q40 Five-Disc DVD Changer Home Theater System (5.1 Channel).
  1. very inexpensive HTIB, but for the price I was impressed with the sound I got from it.
    Pros:
    1. Setup is extemely easy.
    2. Powerful sound..I have mine set up in a room that's about 30X15. But
we use one half of the area as the TV viewing area, so the surround sound field is about 15X15. With that said I cannot put the volume past 27 (goes to 50) without blowing out a eardrum.
    3. The subwoofer works well. I can feel the sofa vibrating.
    4. The speakers are pretty adequate and give out a nice sound.
    5. You can adjust the volume for rear speakers, front speakers and center.
    Cons:
    1. The remote buttons are a bit small
    2. It only has pre-set equalization. Doesn't matter to me for movies, but I would have liked it for the radio.
    3. Even though it has a usb port on it, it does not read all mp3 players, specifically it won't read my ipod.
If your looking for a nice inexpensive HTIB I would recomend this to anyone.

  2. Pros: Attractive
    Great picture.

Cons: Hard to hear or understand the dialog on a DVD unless the front speakers are within 6" of your ears, so you turn up the volume. Then if there are background noises on the DVD like a car door slamming ect. the "noise" is excessively loud and annoying time after time. So you turn the volume down to avoid the "louder" noise, then can't hear the dialog.
You can adjust the L-R on the speakers but the volume cannot be adjusted so the front speakers put out less volume than the rears.
With the exception of the sub woofer, the speakers are "tinny"
The remote is poorly designed and has a feature to operate your television also. When used to turn the TV off, it shuts off but then comes back on again after a second or two.
If you want to memorize a spot on "two or more" discs to return to, its impossible. It will remember "one" disc only.
How this unit ever got passed on to the buying public is a mystery to me.

  3. We are thoroughly enjoying the surround sound for movies on this item.
we would like to know how to connect these speakers to the televison set in order to receive the sound through the speakers from the home theater system. any suggestions?
other than that, the sound is fantastic for dvd's, radio, music cd's and dvd's. thanks so much also for the swift service. it was here in no time. everything was there, no complaints. gloria

  4. I purchased this product from a local electronics store because the price was good and the product looks great with features I was looking for,(I.E. 5 disc changer) however I had to purchase it twice because the first model would NOT play DVD's, only CD's, so I returned it for another of the same model and now this one has problems too, it sticks and skips while "playing" DVD's to which there seems to be no ryme or reason, it's very random, even after trying different DVD's thinking a scratched DVD was the problem, it however was NOT, it's SO FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!
One other disappointment is the time it takes to load a CD or DVD, there seems to be a 15 to 20 second delay before the machine responds.
On the up side it puts out good picture quality and sounds great, my sofa even vibrates when the bass hits during action movies and the radio bass can be felt anywhere in my house.

  1. I was amazed at the price for this home theater system with all the features it has. Upconversion looks pretty good. Sound quality is pretty good, but could use some tweaking (sometimes bass overpowers everything else). XM radio ready was what really got me excited about it and works good although sometimes its a pain in the [...] to read the info on the screen, it's real slow and usually cuts of the last part of the name of the song. After having this in my home for about 2 weeks I turned it on and shocked it. Well the whole screen went out and the volume knob no longer worked. I took the reciever/dvd player back and it was replaced no problem from Circuit City. Would have had to ship it back to Samsung and wait 2 weeks or more for them to fix it. So now I just make sure to use the controller to turn it on. Overall I'm very happy with it and for the price I dont think you can beat it.

  2. I bought this unit for Christmas and by February it shorted out. Amazon only warrants it for 30 days so I had to send it back to Samsung for repair. They held it for 6 weeks supposedly waiting for parts, this is the manufacturer mind you, and after numerous calls they wanted to send me a refurbished unit in replacement of mine. I refused wanting a refurbished unit as I know they usually are junk and my unit was brand knew. Samsung refused to send me a new unit and indeed sent a refurbished unit. And quess what? The refurbished unit arrived with all the buttons on the face pushed into the case and not working! Big surprise? After several more calls to Samsung and ready to call the Better Business Bureau they agreed to send me a new replacement unit of similar style.
As for the unit itself, the sound was very good and the features were great for the price. If you are lucky and don't have to send it out for repair this might be a very good sounding unit for the price but if you do need repairs good luck.

  3. This product is the best home theater I have ever owned. Matched it with a Samsung 1080i DLP and get great picture and sound quality. Can't beat it for the money. Very easy set-up, only problem was that it is deep so watch cabinet size.

  4. I only recently took the plunge into HDTV and home theater. I looked at a lot of reviews and decided to go with this unit because it was Samsung (and so is my TV) and because of the wireless-ready feature. I purchased it along with the wireless unit and couldn't be happier. The wireless unit is a small device (about the size of a thumb drive) that simply plugs into the back of the main unit. The wireless receiver unit then connects to the two rear speakers and you are all set. The sound is impressive and there are numerous fine-tuning features for audiophiles. Not being one myself, I just left most settings at factory defaults and it works fine for me.

It comes with a good manual and has a lot of settings for different modes, all described in detail in the manual. The disc changer is awesome and allows you to leave a few audio CDs in it and still watch DVDs. The only thing I noticed about the changer is that it only remembers where you left off if you don't change to another disc. If you are in the middle of a movie and decide to continue later and consequently turn off the unit, it will start the disc over again the next time you turn it on because it will always begin at disc 1 in the changer. This took some getting used to for me because I was used to a single-disc unit that remembered where I left off before powering down the unit.

The upconversion is awesome and the standard DVDs look great on a 1080i TV like my 40-inch Samsung. It also has plenty of connections. I have it connected to my TV via an HDMI cable and the playback is flawless.

Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase.

  5. Bought the unit earlier this year...sold it by the end. Great DVD player with upconverting dvd's to 1080i and controls very user friendly i thought. Only thing that i noticed right away was the sound quality, muddy kinda sound (Therefore making voices hard to distinguish unless turn up). Not sure if its just the speakers but doesn't have that crisp sound. Had a Panasonic HTIB before and was waaaayy better sounding than this. Again not sure if changing the speakers helps (which possibly could) but then again, is it worth doing? Actually looked into it but just went with a Bose 321, which I highly recomend =). Again if sound quality is not THAT important its a great system. If your looking for better quality for round the same price range, an Onkyo would defenitly be a better buy!

  1. To start, I bought this system because it is supposed to rival the Bose 321 and Sony 2.1 "virtual" surround systems at a fraction of the price. The sound was average at best and the top loading dvd tray didn't make any sense. You had to pull out the head unit to put a movie in every time.

Quality - After a month and week after purchase the system had a symbol on like the slash indicating no smoking. Couldn't even eject the DVD that was in the unit. It has been 2 months that my system has been with Samsung, until today when they finally offered me a refund.

This has been a horrible experience and I couldn't recommend this product to my worst enemy.

  2. I am not sure if everyone knows this but after you remove the back cover you can unscrew the back off the stand and there is a neat channel for all the wires this makes the unit very neat and tidy even if you have a HDMI, phono, toslink, power and speaker cables all plugged in. Also does anyone know if the usb will power a portable harddrive such as the '650mA WD passport'

  3. I love this home theater system, its soo neat and cool looking. The sound is really good, even at loud volumes, especially since it is a 2.1 stereo system. Great value and buy for the price.

  4. I bought a Samsung theater planning to use my MP3 player via the USB port. Beware- they do not tell you that the USB feature is compatible with only 30 or so players, 20 of them Samsung plus a couple of other models you've never heard of. It won't even accept iPods!

Otherwise it works great and is Gorgeous.

  5. I bought The HT-q100 about nine months ago. All was going rather well. Its a really cool looking device and for being only a 2.1 it sounds wonderful. I also like the blue lights. I almost exclusively use it as a cd player.
Now, some months later I am running into some issues that are getting me red in the face. I can deal with the pause only lasting for 20 seconds before it shuts it self off while using it as a cd player. When I use it as a dvd player it sometimes wont work very well. I mean that a dvd will "skip" or "freeze" on a frame All through most movies! For Christ sakes! Do any of you realize how uncool that it is to a lady you just started dating! Picture this, she comes to your house to watch a movie and the movie starts to skip and freeze!!!! Not good, Not good at all Samsung! Its definitely not going to make for a romantic atmosphere, you know what Im say'n. I dont know if its the design or what, but Im sure because its an upright it could collect dust easier internally.
Now the Kicker. Just a week ago I Bought a Creative Zen vision W to play on this wretched thing. SOB- my Vision W isn't compatible!!!!!!! I couldn't for the life of me understand why when I plugged my player in using the supplied USB cable, the Samsung (fill in you Adjective of choice here. Mine is P.o.S)would read No USB. What?? Over and over I tried but to no avail. I was only about 45 min. ago did I find out compatibility was the problem. Hell, I understand that I-Pods dont even work with this thing. Its just reprehensible that A global company would intentionally make Many and Most Mp3 players not compatible with their products. Your a Criminal waste of my hard earned money Samsung and for that I hold you Liable.
ultimately this is a deplorable machine and if I could do it over again I would look over this product. I gave it two stars because it looks and sounds good.

  1. High quality, beautiful picture and awesome sound. The Denon S102 is perfect for the person looking for the absolute best without all the clutter of a 5.1 system and the old looking equipment still on the market today. I am the type of person that researches extensively befor investing into somthing and this system fits my needs perfectly. I paired it up with a Samsung LN-T 4071 and I wanted a clean look to mount on a wall with no wires, stands or a stack of recievers, dvd player vcr etc.. We watch mostly movies dvds and I can honestly say the sound quality rivals that of my 5.1 polk system that was twice the cost. Easy setup took about 15 minuites including taking it out of the box. The first thing you will notice when puting it together is how simple and easy it is and how much attention to detail went into this system. Well worth the cost. In this case less is more... much more.

  2. The Denon S-102 is a great system: It has everything you could want in an attractive, simple, and easy to set-up, package. It plays AM/FM, CDs and DVDs, and the sound is amazing. However, for close to a thousand dollars, one would expect a certain level of quiet in the speakers when switching between functions and low-level DVD watching. Thinking I had a lemon (that made noise), I had a new one shipped to me. But the problem was still there - a 'fluttering' sound coming from the subwoofer that could best be described a combination of distortion and electrical static. Needless to say, I returned both units. I am in the process of looking for a replacement, perhaps of another brand...

  1. Has anyone used this system? I am very interested in buying to it go along with my 50 inch Samsung Plasma and wanted to hear some feedback on the system...anyone got any reviews?

  2. I bought this system from amazon because the product description said it had an HDMI Input and Output connection.
There is No HDMI input! In fact there are no video inputs at all.

I wanted to connect my HD cable box to this system, then have one cable out to my HD TV. I never set up the system or even removed the speakers from the box. As soon as I saw it did not have an input I returned it.

  3. Love it.. love all Samsung stuff actually, well accecpt for the annoying confirmation bleeps that the TV's make when turned on and off. This produst is really nice and classy though. I use mine in the horizontal position and it looks great with the Tv and stand. I have a large great room type area and it fills the area with sound just fine. Picture is gorgeous on my 720hd. It is just what I expected it would be. Thanks Samsung and Amazon!

  4. This is at best an inconvenient system to use and at worst it is unmanagable. I should have investigated this system more closely prior to purchase, but for the price I assumed it would have bass and treble controls. It has none and the bass is often times overwhelming. The display is inadequate and to see "normal" info (track, time, etc) displayed you need to have your TV on.

It also has major input/output deficiences. For example the only other audio output is the headphone jack which silences the rest of the system.

This is my first Samsung product and I am extremely disappointed.

  5. I was looking for a simple surround sound system for my Samsung LN52a650.
After much research I chose this system because of price and simplicity.
I was not disappointed the sound is very good. The "anynet" feature works
OK with the TV but doesn't turn on with it, have to use it's own remote.
It does turn off with the TV. Regular DVD movies look great between this
player and the TV. If you have a lot of other things to hook up to a surround sound system and want all the bells and whistles, keep looking.
but for something simple this unit works fine.
