1 comments about Denon S302 DVD Home Theater System.
- Listed below are my thoughts on the S-302 after a week of use.
Styling
The styling is fair. This is very subjective, but the cabinet does not really look like it should cost $1700. I very much like the compact size. The controls look fine and feel solid.
Sound
I am not an audiophile, so take this with a grain of salt. I believe the quality of the sound is very good when playing music. The bass was not too deep and the highs were very clear. There was a good separation of instruments on some the jazz recordings. I tested this with various types of music using sources from CD, FM, and MP3 (VBR 165-175 kbps).
DVD
This is a 2.1 system and to me that is what it sounds like. Watching several movies, I never had the illusion of 5.1. The sound is fine, the sub-woofer did a bit too much shaking of the apartment for my tastes, but this is easily adjustable with a dedicated button on the remote. Occasionally the voices did not seem to come from the correct place on the screen. This could be due to the location of the speakers as they are at the bottom of the screen since the stands are not yet available.
The picture from the DVD is very good. I have the S-302 connected via HDMI connection to my 42" plasma, which is 1080i. The picture is extremely sharp. No noticeable jagged lines.
The memory function of the DVD does not work very well. If you stop the DVD and turn off the unit, it will remember the location when you turn it back on. If you switch to another source (e.g., tuner) and return to the DVD, it starts at the beginning of the movie. Not the menus or the FBI warnings, so it appears that it recognizes that this DVD has not been newly inserted.
Internet/USB
This unit is equipped with WiFi (802.11b/g) and ethernet network capabilities. I was not able to get the wireless to work. My WPA key contains spaces and I could not figure out how to enter a space in the key. I removed the spaces from my key. I then turned off security. All of these options failed to connect. I then connected the device using a power line ethernet adapter and was able to connect. This connection is not reliable and I cannot tell if it is the adapter or the S-302. Occasionally, when starting the unit, it will try to connect using the wireless. This should occur only when the direct ethernet connection is not present.
The interface for the internet radio is easy to use. The stations are categorized by genre and country of origin. Although you can get to a station with this interface, a search feature would greatly facilitate getting to a known station. The interface for the USB is not so friendly. It is just a directory listing of the USB drive. It would be easier to navigate if it used the ID3 information to group by artist, album, genre, etc.
Tuner
While the quality of the sound from the tuner is very good, tuning of stations is very frustrating. There are three modes. FM Auto, FM Mono, and AM. When in FM Auto, the unit will not let you enter a weak station. Direct input of the station results in no sound whatsoever. Switching to FM Mono, the station can be entered and listened to. Entering a preset for this will remember which mode it is in, so this is necessary only once. Also, in the FM Auto mode, if a station starts to fade, it just goes out. It is either tuned or not tuned, so it can just keep cutting out. I would rather have static, but to do that I would have to use the FM Mono for all of my stations.

1 comments about Philips 1000 Watts DVD Home Theater System with DivX Ultra, HTS3440/37.
- Hey, it's got a powered/active subwoofer, and some stylish looking speakers. The only trick is that the controls for the subwoofer are not external. They are set thru the DVD menu, but the settings remain constant, whether watching TV, a DVD or the radio. Once I was able to get the bass turned up, the sound was very impressive, especially considering the price. I get a lot of compliments on the look of the speakers, and the subwoofer is a really good size.
One caveat: DO NOT purchase a refurbished Philips item of any kind. The WORST customer service on the planet is thru Philips for their refurbished items, although their customer service for new items is comparable to other companies.
I don't have a super expensive system, but it sure looks & sounds like it these days.
I have:
Sharp Aquos 32" LCD HDTV LC32D43U (love it!)
DirecTV HD DVR HR20
Philips Home Theater in a Box (HTS3450--blk) Includes prog. scan DVD player and a jpeg/divx/mp3 player (NOT refurbished)
Toshiba VCR
Whalen Entertainment Center which includes a LCDTV mount

5 comments about Philips HTS3566D/37 1000 Watt 1080P HDMI Upconversion Dolby DVD Home Theater System with iPod Dock.
- I bought it and hook up that night. Sound is great. It play DVD, CD, VCD, USB devices. It play most of media files and DivX files. If sound is good, it plays very good, same like in Movie Theater.
- Philips sent me this model (HTS3566D) after the old model (HTS3555) I had was having problems. The old system would not sync the audio with the video. Very annoying problem... they sent me 3 HTS3555's as replacements and they all had the same problem.
Eventually they sent me a new unit, this model. This one was great, had no audio sync problems... that is until it blew up! I was watching TV with my home theater system on and suddenly I heard a POP and a loud buzzing coming out the of the speakers (The volume was not turned up loud either, just normal volume)! The stereo would not turn off either. I had to unplug it. Now when I plug it in it makes a loud buzzing sound and the LCD screen does not light up... only loud buzzes.
Philips is sending me a replacement unit. I hope that it does not explode too! I definitely would not buy this unit again though knowing that mine exploded!
- Speakers are powerful enough considering the price. Upscale conversion works great with my HDTV. The product comes with an Ipod dock which is definitely a plus...you can even control your Ipod using the DVD remote that comes with it.
I found out that if you are connected to your TV via HDMI, you need to turn off HMDI audio out in the options menu. That way, the digital audio still comes off the DVD speakers.
USB connector work well with my AVI files. My cable box is even connected through this using the digital input connection.
- This works great for what we wanted. You have to play with it alittle to get the volume from your tv to it if you do not have a volume out plug. I had to read the directions to my husband for him to not be pissed and want to break it. Use a digital audio wire for the tv.
- I bought this unit to replace my aging Home Theater system and also take advantage of the capabilities of the HD TV I already own.
First, the "Quick Start" guide tells you everything you need to know to set up the entire unit and get it operational. The Quick Start Guide covers both the HTS3565D unit (standard speaker design) and the HTS3566D which has surround sound towers. The English portion of the guide covers a total of four pages. An additional eight are written in Spanish and French.
Packaged in the box are the unit, remote control and two batteries, an RCA jack patch cable for composite video, FM antenna wire, user manual (in addition to the quick start guide), color coded and keyed speaker wires, screws (for the surround towers) and an iPod docking station. An HDMI cable is NOT included. Speakers are comprised of a center speaker (with one mid-range and two tweeters), two front speakers (each with a tweeter and mid-range), two surround speakers (with three mid-range and one tweeter each), and a sub-woofer with one twelve inch driver. This is a total of sixteen drivers.
All of this is contained in a single box that hides the fact that two towers are part of the system. This is accomplished by making the towers a two part unit that has to be assembled outside the box. All of the other components require no more assembly that hooking up the speakers (a very easy task with the color coding) and hookups for connection to the TV/projector, antenna, and iPod dock.
Assembling and placing all of the components is very easy and took no more than a half-hour if that. The Quick Start Guide is amply illustrated and written instruction very understandable and easy to follow. In fact I'll go so far as stating that the actual manual is almost superfluous.
The menu system surpasses my older unit by a considerable margin. As in the best units it is possible to make a myriad of selections from the menu including fine tuning the volume of each individual speaker via pink noise. Note that this fine tuning can only be done when the unit is in DVD operation mode.
Once operational, the unit supports DVD, AM, FM, two AUX inputs, MP3 input, and iPod input. It also has a pair of RCA jacks for Aux sound from the TV. Naturally this greatly enhances the sound quality of your broadcast television viewing.
The sound quality, while watching DVDs (with sixteen speakers I should not have been surprised) that I have yet to be able to watch a movie at half volume without the fear of disturbing my neighbors. The volume scale goes to forty (40), but I typically have to keep level at ten (10) or one quarter of the maximum volume.
With some tweeking I was able to lower the volume of the sub-woofer enough that I can now dial up a volume setting of fifteen (15). This is still remarkably loud.
I have only three complaints.
The first is minor and was temporary. After connecting the HDMI cable it took a while (maybe fifteen minutes maximum) for the unit to get both the sound and picture in synchronization. In other words I did not have sound for that period of time while the unit made some internal adjustments. This IS covered in the manual (thankfully as I thought I'd bought another defective product) and have not had a problem with it since. Note that the HDMI Audio in the menu system must be OFF to play DVDs through the player's speaker system. HDMI Audio ON is for component home theater receivers separate from the player.
Second, the surround sound speaker wire could be a few feet longer. This cannot be fixed by patching a few extra feet of wire yourself as the wire is already terminated with keyed, color coded connectors.
My third complaint is that the unit did not come with an HDMI cable. With a take home price of nearly $300.00 I would expect Philips to be able to afford throwing in a forty dollar, six foot cable. Naturally, the best picture quality dictates the purchase of this cable. That said the up-conversion is very good and seamless.
Finally, the picture quality is quite good, the sound amazing (the first war film I watched nearly blew me off the couch), and the reliably what I've come to expect from Philips. After having bought a competitor unit that did not work new out of the box, I was a bit apprehensive about this purchase. But after a month of use I am very happy with it. The external design in clean and complementary to most home decor. The picture and sound quality excellent and now I no longer anticipate buying a Blu-Ray unit at twice the price along with the associated high cost of Blu-Ray discs.
I feel I've made a good purchase.

- This system really came highly rated by several people, and I did not hesitate to buy it based soley on the Bose brand. However, we've had it up and running since August '05 and have experienced problems playing DVDs. Everything else seems to work just fine - stereo radio has normal reception, simulated surround sound is suitable for what we wanted/expected, the CD-to-hard drive transfer and play back is slick and convenient, but movie play back seems to have a mind of it's own.
Almost always right around track 13 of whatever movie we play - either from our own collection or rented from the video store - play stops and the display says either "Unsupported media" or "Cannot Read Disc". And of course I made sure all settings were correct and that we were playing region 1 DVDs.
This unit is going back to the store. Hopefully we just got a bad unit; time will tell...
!!!!!!!!!!!
Update:
I contacted the local Bose store and they told me to bring the unit in and it would be looked at and possibly replaced. I did so and the guys there were very helpfull in logging the issue, and opened up a new unit and swapped out my defective one with the new one, saying that my warranty reset and begins that day - nice!
Kudos to customer service for Bose. The new system seems to work just fine so far.
- Upon returning home with my new unit from the Bose store, I was immediately confronted with two problems. When locally openning the tray, the system would quickly retract to close. Trying to operate the tray with the remote control revealed the second problem, the remote caused nothing at all to happen - no tray action and no on/off. After trying several times each with a new set of batteries, I called the store. The salesperson asked me to bring in the media center and the remote. Both were replaced from a new set. Since then (one week later) everything has worked beautifully. I especially like the uMusic Intelligent Playback feature. The sound is amazing. Kudos to Bose for both product and service.
- I am uncertain how to rate this product. On one hand I love the sound and it has worked well for us. It is simple to set up and easy to program and use.
On the other hand there is no way to plug in a headphone nor an easy way to expand to accept a headphone (no audio out jacks except proprietary Bose). Evidently this was not true of the older ones. In any case we emailed Bose about the problem and never received a reply. We are trying another solution but it seems from this experience that Bose's customer service is less than stellar.
I would give the system 5 stars for its simplicity and sound at the price. We did not want to deal with an entire system of components for the time being. I would rate the customer service and expandability at 1 star. My bottom line is that I will not buy Bose again (well maybe their headphones which I like). This system does not expand well. I perhaps should have known it before I bought it.
If you still want the system knowing this you will love it based on my experience. Plug it in and go with some very nice sound for the price. If you are more like me then run away and find a company that plays well with others.

- System noisy out of box and very soon completely konked out with the famous Panasonic F61 error. Search for "Panasonic F61" in your web browser and that should be enough to convince you to never buy Panasonic audio equipment. I just wished I had done that before buying it...
- THIS WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD WITH A COMPANY....THIS PRODUCT IS COMPLETE GARBAGE.I GOT THE RUN AROUND SO BAD IT WASNT EVEN FUNNY.I CALLED ABOUT TEN DIFFERENT NUMBERS GOT NO WHERE,WAS TOLD TO DRIVE TO THEIR STUPID REPAIR CENTER 30 MILES AWAY,THEN WHEN I GOT THERE THE GUY TOLD ME HE WOULDNT REPAIR THIS MODEL BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH A PILE AND THAT IT WOULD TAKE 3 MONTHS TO FIX AND HE WOULDNT EVEN TAKE IT.....THIS WAS THE FIRST AND LAST PANASONIC I WILL EVER BUY..........BRAND NEW UNIT THAT SHUTS OFF WITH F61 CODE.....WHAT A PILE!!!!
- What a piece of JUNK! This was truly a waste of my hard earned money that I bought from Best Buy after I probably did not do enough research. The salesman at Best Buy said that it was a great middle of the road unit. However, it was my fault for not researching more thoroughly. It worked for 1 year and 3 months and then would not read any discs. Panasonic customer service sucks ("TAKE IT TO A SERVICE CENTER" after being transferred and put on hold until I was ready to explode) and Best Buy said "I told you so" about the extended warranty, which I never get "suckered" in to. Well, woe is me! Anyway, my suggestion would be to stay away from this and any other Panasonic surround sound system due to all of the negatives and failures. I can say that I have a Panasonic TV (8 yrs. old), a Panasonic phone and a Panasonic camera that have all been carefree.
- I have experienced the same F-61 problem with this unit after having it two days past the 1 year warranty clause. I tried to call for assistance but found that Panasonic out sources there troubleshooting now and the person I spoke with (1) could not speak English well and (2) had no technical knowledge other than telling me that I should unplug the unit and then plug it back in. I took it to a repair shop and it has set there for two months because the guy cannot get any response from Panasonic regarding parts. I will pick it up today and probably throw it away. I called another repair shop and was told that they do not work on Panasonic anymore because they are made so cheaply and it is not cost effective. When I contacted Panasonic directly I was basically told, "tough luck." That pretty much made up my mind that I will never buy Panasonic again. There should be a recall!!!
- My nightmare Panasonic DVD recorder Md DMR EZ27, stopped operating after 5 months by not ejecting a DVD movie from Netflix, sent to Panasonic Camera & Digital Service Center, It took 9 weeks for the repair because they did not have the part, could not order Netflix movies until DVD was returned, after phone calls and notifying Panasonic, an employee lied about a phone conversation regarding the repair stating "your husband get mad and hung up" and "the part is coming in next week" How does a company like Panasonic not have the part for a 5 month old product? Even customer service at Panasonic was of no help. I will not buy their products as long as I live!

5 comments about Sony DAV-HDX500/i BRAVIA Home Theater System.
- I love the system. I'm not the best at hooking up systems like this but I got it done in a reasonable amount of time. It sounds great. I don't understand the review about "needs more bass". My wife and I watched "American Gangster" last night and we had to back off on the bass. It was shaking the house. It's not a powered subwoofer like my last system yet the bass is far superior. More importantly, when we watch a film we can really understand the conversations. There is a lot less "what did he say?" Also, no one could touch Amazon's price.
- Excellent in every aspect. Easy to setup, easy to use. Great price from Vann's. Great service. Would do business with them again in a heartbeat.
- The Sony DAV-HDX500/i Bravia Home Theater system is WONDERFUL!!! We feel as if we are actually in a Movie Theater, however the great sound effects that come out of it scare our dog and cats to death so they run and hide!!! We Love It!!!
- I was very pleased with this Sony system. I set it up, including running the wires through the ceiling, in about 90 minutes. It is simple to use and the sound is quite good. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, quality system.
- Great system, but just not enough volume. If you are looking for serious volume look somewhere else because this unit is limited in that department.

5 comments about Bose 3-2-1 GSX DVD home entertainment system - DVD surround system - radio / DVD - graphite gray.
- I am a fan of Bose and their quality sound systems - or at least I was so far. The 3-2-1 GSX is a great idea and the sound is very good. But the box has so many glitches that it is extremely frustrating. The biggest problem is that DVDs tend to freeze or stop playing at the slightest imperfection. We rent DVDs from Blockbusters and almost never had a problem on our old DVD player. Really bad discs would cause some image distortion or strange effects on the screen but they would normally recover once over the bad spot and never freeze up. The Bose has a hair trigger sensitivity to the slightest imperfection on the DVD (and which rentals don't have a small scratch or dirt). The Bose will simply stop playing, display a message ("can't read DVD") and stop. All tricks trying to fast forward or somehow skip that spot fail. Imagine you are in the middle of a thriller! In all such cases we played the same DVD in our old player without any problem.
I am in the high tech business and used to systematic fault isolation. So I took one disc that froze the Bose (in that case it did not even eject the DVD and I had to recycle the power) to the store where I bought the Bose and tried it on other high end players. It worked fine in all cases and got over the trouble spot. The I played it in the top end Bose Lifestyle system. It jammed for a while (also very sensitive) but it recovered.
I had a lot of interaction with Bose support on this. They sent me a software update CD which made no noticeable difference. The dealer just says such a high quality system is very sensitive to disc defects. That's balloney, 80% of all rentals from Blockbuster freeze the system.
I have given up having Bose resolve the problem since there is an obvious flaw in the DVD reader and they don't admit to it. I am now buying another DVD player to add to the system since I am tired of the frustrations with the 3-2-1 GSX.
If you have a choice, don't buy this sytem.
- I purchased this system a little over a year ago for my husband's birthday-we have been fans of Bose for a long time, but this system is full of glitches. As the other reviewers said these systems are very picky about what dvds they will play. We started having problems about one month after the warranty expired and had to pay the flat rate of about $70.00 for the repair-only to have it do the same thing about three months later-now under new warranty we ship it back again and it is "repaired" this time for free-we have had it back for about one week and already it is refusing dvds-even a brand new just opened never before played disc. I just got off the phone with Bose and we are shipping it back and they are replacing it. At this point I am not too optimistic. We purchased a cheap ($50.00) Memorex dvd player from Target for the times the Bose is not cooperating and it plays anything and everything beautifully, albeit, without the sound quality of the Bose, but what good is sound quality if it won't play the disc?
In my opinion Bose should stick to audio.
- We just returned our Bose 3-2-1 GSX system. When it works properly, it works great, but getting it to work properly is the key. We bought it for the features, sound and brand and returned it for it's quality.
Though the sound is great, some remark that it has negligible mid-tones. This is correct, but didn't affect our enjoyment at all. The sound is great and the simulated surround is excellent. You have to set the small speakers so the inner edges focus on the center of the listening area. The subwoofer can be anywhere, but we placed it under the TV. The late-1980's-era LCD display cannot be shut off and doesn't have a clock display.
The problems started when it couldn't read some tracks on some CDs we had. Then, when we tried to load CDs into the internal HDD, the system crashed. It kept powering on & off. Unplugging and doing a hard reset didn't work.
On the plus side for Bose, we got through to tech support almost immediately, and this is on a Sunday morning. Of course, the tech had never heard of this issue, and he said they would send a replacement main-unit. I said that I would just bring it in to our Bose store and swap it out.
Before I left, I read many reviews, including those here, and decided to return the whole thing. My recommendation is if you end up buying this, save the packing materials.
It's astounding that Bose would let a product which has issues like this out the door. I hope they can figure things out before they loose their reputation.
Pros: Excellent features, excellent sound, easy to setup.
Cons: Poor CD read, poor overall quality
- I feel angry and duped by BOSE. today I had my second, yes second, GSX321 system installed and it worked wonders for all of 7 hours before it began to shut down after a minute or less. Would never have believed the other negative reviews posted here had this not just happened to me. I bought the first unit two months ago and it worked for all of a couple of weeks until it too just began shutting itself off.
for the second unit, today, I had the BOSE staff do the installation, so nothing would go wrong. boy was I foooled. another 400 dollars wasted.
that bose knows about this and does nothing but ship out replacement units, and they do do this fast, must confirm they know it's a lemon and are just trying to hide this from the public.
SHAME SHAME SHAME. Don't waste your hard earned $1500 on this garbage.
- Unfortunately for me, I didn't do an in-depth research of this product, and was carried away by the promises of high quality and superb sound that BOSE boasts for its products.
The 321 GSX broke down only after 3 months, during which I gave it little use. I was loading a CD into the hard drive and the equipment went crazy, turning on and off on its own, non stop. I had to unplug it to make it stop. Most embarrassing, I was hosting people and they were making fun of how much I had paid for a piece of junk (compared to their lower-priced but much reliable Japanese or Korean entertainment systems).
After several (and useless) calls with technical service, they indicated that there was no fix (no way to reset it) and that I had to exchange the equipment. Doing some research, I realized that this same problem has happened to several other people, so evidently they have a serious quality control problem. Had I known this, I would have thought it twice!!!
Unfortunately for me I was unable to return it, plus I had incurred in installation costs, so I am "stuck" with it.
The worst sound quality is that you don't have, so don't be deceived by BOSE's promises of superb sound; if it breaks down, you won't hear anything. So save yourself some money, and don't make the foolish decision of buying this equipment, is really not worth it.

5 comments about Samsung HT-X70 DVD Home Theater System.
- Ordered this to go with a new Samsung 56" LCD DLP also purchased right here. Easy hookup plus the remotes are the same for both units. To tell you the truth, I have not used it for anything but DVD playback so I don't know yet what CDs will sound like. When we built our home 13 years ago, I recessed 4 Bose speakers high in our very large livingroom and have hooked them up to the HT-X70, along with the center channel speaker and the sub woofer. When watching an action movie with explosions and other warfare sound effects, you can FEEL the sound as much as hear it--it's great! The DVD player makes our regular DVDs really come to life with sharp, vivid images. For $300, I could not be happier with the purchase, plus the shipping was FAST and delivery trouble free! I would not hesitate to use Amazon again---very happy and satisfied with the whole experience.
- Great system. It's as advertised. Can't wait to get it set up permanently down in the family room!
- I BOUGHT THIS AS A GIFT FOR A FRIEND TO SUPPLIMENT THE SAMSUNG HI DEF LCD TV HE HAS. SOUNDS GREAT. WISH THE MINI-SPEAKERS HAD A MORE SECURE BASE ON WHICH TO REST.
FOR THE WIRELESS EFFECT OF THE REAR SPEAKERS HAD TO SHALL OUT ANOTHER $100 TO BUY THE SAMSUNG WIRELESS 'TRANSMITTER'.
MY LOGITECH WIRELESS Z5450 COSTS MUCH LESS YET WORKS EXCELLENTLY FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS.
COMPARATIVELY, THE SAMSUNG IS NOT BAD OVERALL.
- We've had our HT-X70 TIB for over a year now and I can honestly say I've never really wanted any other product, or been overly disappointed with it's performance, since first hooking it up.
I research products very carefully before buying, so this product hasn't presented any big surprises. I'll admit to being somewhat surprised by our impression of the quality of sound produced though. I didn't expect it to be quite as good, considering the very small speaker wires included and the general TIB (theater in a box) concept.
I'm a little put-off by the use of 3 ohm speakers, which greatly limits the possibility of changing speakers. But, due to the research mentioned before, this was no surprise. Based on our TV watching habits, this hasn't really proven to be an issue, but it might be for others, so be aware.
We really do love the way it integrates so seamlessly with our recently purchased Samsung HL61A750 DLP TV, via Samsung's Anynet system. Just pop in a DVD and both the TIB and TV turn on and the TV switches autmatically to the proper inputs to receive the DVD signal! What could be easier? It worked well with our previous Toshiba DLP, but didn't automatically interface as it does with the Samsung TV. Gotta love those matching components...
The 5 DVD changer has been quite useful and the quality of output exceeds our needs completely. It's ease of use and lack of complexity over previous Video and DVD players and sound systems has been greatly appreciated!
We also have the wireless option for the rear speakers, which makes speaker placement very easy without the need to run the wires from the unit. You will however, still need to connect the rear speakers to the wireless receiver. What this option does is basically reduce the length of wires run and eliminate the need to run them from the rear of the room back to the unit. Worth the extra money in my opinion, but not without it's troubles. We've had to "reset" our system once when the wireless receiver stopped communicating with the TIB. A quick internet search provided instructions on doing so and we've only had to do it once, so it's not a big deal to us. It was just a little disappointing, if only for just a few moment while searching for a solution.
I'd definitely recommend this unit for anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive option for vastly improving your TV and movie watching experience over what comes out of the TV. It may not be considered a high end option by many, but it will likely satisfy the needs of all but the most sophisticated audiophiles...
I'd also buy it again without hesitation!
- ALL THIS FOR $300? wow! I am extremely happy with the purchase. I upgraded from a JVC home theater in a box. It cost me $200 but was ugly, cheap looking, sounded horrible. This samsung is beautifily paired with my 56" DLP and Stand. The sound is adequete. Pretty good with music, really good on movies. I actually jumped the first time I watch an action movie in sourround. Very realistic.
Only complaint - No AM Radio.
