3 comments about Bose Lifestyle 28 Series III DVD Home Entertainment System - Black.
- Recently got a Bose Lifestyle 28 refurb unit, it was still pretty expensive. Quick thoughts:
Setup: the build quality and cables are all top-notch. Everything has a plug and every single wire was easy to set up. The wires didn't hide too wel in the two sets of stands I bought from Bose. Using the adapti-q system to balance the speakers was the appeal of the system.
Video: the new progressive scan features use a combo s-video and composite y-adapter to component to send a full progressive scan signal. I was skeptical at first, but was pretty pleased with the image quality and black levels put out by the unit on the LG 32LC2D HDTV. Not bad picture and it really did put out progressinve scan!
The central unit still relies to heavily on legacy ports: composite everywhere, 2 s-video, 2 coaxial and only 1 optical input. If you have an Xbox 360 and a PS3 (or two) only one of them will work with optical on this system.
Audio: there was no hiss or noise that I could hear when the system was on and no sound was playing, that's a plus. Video games through the optical sounded pretty good through the optical input, although separation was lost a little in the speakers. CD-based Music sounded pleasingly warm.
Now the bad part: this speaker set produces pretty crummy sound for movies. Dialog sounded muffled and quiet, voices were causing the acoustimass module to kick in a little too much- resulting in deep tones associated with normal voices on the Hot Fuzz DVD, while voice work in Star Wars sounded like people were talking through a pillow! Large battle scenes lost their high-end sparkle- the clangs of swords, shattering of glass, or screeching of tires all were toned down and warmed by the over-powering tilt towards mid sounds in the acoustimass module.
Bass response was powerful although undefined and needs tighter response. Staccato sounds become a constant tone.
Giant battle scenes in Star Wars and LOTR became a mess in surround- nothing was distinct or separated. The opening Tripod sequence in War of the Worlds had heavy bass, powerful mids, and almost nothing else. The bursting of the pavement was ominously powerful, but the crumbling dirt, smashed cars, and zaps of energy beams were all muted and lost by the overzealous acoustimass module. Screams of the crowd became lost in the soundtrack of the movie! Brass and violas were more readily audible than the scream of a charcter on camera.
I turned the treble compensation all the way up to little improvement, except it made "s" sounds in dialog sizzle too much, while keeping vowels in the deep mid-tone prison. Easing down bass compensation dropped the Low frequncy channel effects, but left dialog sounding way too bass heavy and overly warm in that same area of overcompensation. I ran the adapt-IQ system again and again, I moved furniture, and called customer service. These did not help and I became increasingly alarmed about spending $1850 on this system.
Ultimately, I decided to return my $1850 Bose Lifestyle 28's and stick with my $150 Klipsch Pro Media 5.1. These speakers are not great, but at least I can hear what people are saying in films. There is better seperation in this setup than in Bose's direct/reflecting speakers.
The Bose cost ten times as much, produced 10 times the room filling sound, but left nothing distict enough to hear in movies for an average OR discerning listener.
If you have the money, try the Lifestyle 35's, as they produce a much brighter sound and still have enough mid and deep range to make movies pop.
Avoid the Lifestyle 28's and get a Home theater in a box solution from one of the major retailers.
A big, and expensive disappointment.
Customer Service notes: I have to end this with the fact that despite my clear frustrations, I was treated with incredible courtesy and friendliness by everyone at Bose. I have not had a better experience so far with a customer service department.
- excellent , i can't stop using it... i have listened to many others home theaters brands , but nothing like bose home entertainment system
- I spend at least 3 months doing some research on which home theater system was the best for me. well after trying some brands that, according to the whole internet, are quite superior to Bose, and some super cheap configurations that according to some reviewers (from other sites), where better than Bose, I ended up coming back to my choice number one from the very beginning....BOSE lifestyle systems...
My friends have "yamaha", "sony", "klipch", and all the additions you can put on those HT's, but I was no satisfied. maybe it was their configuration, but the sound starts breaking after a couple of minutes after playing in higher volumes, DVD's whete OK in the sony, ang good in the yamaha, but blue ray disc soundtrack was horrible in both of them...
tryed a magnolia 1000 dollars worth from BB, andit was good, but not what I was looking for.
then decided to put some more money in my investment and ended up buying my Bose lifestyle system 28 series. I am totally satisfied. the Bass is not cheesy neither booming, is perfect. tremble was adjusted in a little lower setting, and the ADAPT IQ did the rest...since I have the bose VS-2, the DVD resolution is excellent, and sound is powerful, crisp, NORMAL (not timpanic membrane breakingly abnormal), CD playback is excellent. Playing games is a pleasure, with sorround sound, Dolby digital via optical cable...I also have a logitech squeezebox duet connected to it, and works astonishingly, with the coaxial cable connection...
well I do not know if thiis HT system was made for me, but fullfils all my entretainment demands, in one single package, easy to install and configure, and no matter how you try to hide the it (for nobody to judge just by the brand), every guest I have had, have made comments about the sound (it doesn't matter what we are doing in front of the TV), somebody notices a difference for good.
An advise is: NEVER READ REVIEWS from the interner about this brand, because the ones so called (I did not have enough money, so I decided to write a bad review instead), are WRONG. It is a grear HT and if you have the money available, get one of those, and you will forget about all those difficult to use configurations and systems that work partially.
note:
the good: great sound better that everithing else around, easy to use and set up, excellent support service, and does what it whas meant to do.
the bad: pricey, bose shuld invent "WIRELESS SPEAKERS" (all 5 of them) because cables aren't easy to hide.
all in all, bose is a matter of afordability, but if you can afford it, GET IT

5 comments about Philips AmbiSound Home Theater Sound Bar with Integrated 1080p-Upscaling DVD/MP3 Player.
- To start, I have to say that this sound bar deserves a 5 star rating for it's look alone. The fact that Philip's has managed to pack a DVD player into it, is pure genius. So then why am I giving it a 4 star rating? A few small things really (Intruth, I'd give it a 4.5 if Amazon allowed 1/2 stars).
Included in the box is almost everything you'll need for the install. The only thing missing? - an audio cable to run from your TV back to the sound bar so you can listen to your TV through the sound bar (if you're using a digital receiver/satelite receiver, you'll need to supply the audio cable to run back to the subwoofer because all of the 5.1 decoding is done in the sub). Wall braket, HDMI cable, MP3 line-in, Ipod dock with video out cable and AM/FM receivers all included. Set-up shouldn't take you more than a half hour.
Once installed, DVD performance was excellent. The upconverted image (720p for my TV) is great, and the audio is crisp & clear. The simulated surround sound is very good and the sound field created is wide enough that at times things seem to be happening around you. The bass from the sub is present, but there are times when you may wish you could turn it up (which you can't - the sub's output is fixed. All you can do is turn up the volume to the whole system). But let's remember, this isn't meant to be your home theater - this is better suited to dress up & enhance your living room.
Now, music reprodution is the systems flaw in my ears (ha). Admittedly, I'm a bit of an audiophile when it comes to music, so most people probably wouldn't notice this, but music seems to be slightly muddled from the sound bar. I found there were times that I couldn't make out the individual instruments on some songs. Having said that, for my own use I have found that it works great as a music player for dinner parties or when friends stop by for drinks.
There is one slight design flaw as well. The plug in for the Ipod dock is located on the side of the sound bar instead of the back. This placement makes hiding the dock cable virtually impossible. When I'm not using the dock I unplug the cable and tuck it in the mounting braket to maintain the clean look (I buried all the cables in the wall, so this is important to me)
Overall though, this is a great system at a great price.
- My goal was to purchase a good quailty sound system without having to wire up 5 to seven speakers. I looked at Denon systems and Bose systems and decided on the Philips for price and the fact that I purchased a Philips 42 inch LCD TV and the Philips Ambisound mates up nicely with the TV.
Easy to wire. Easy to set up.
I was not expecting theater like surround sound experience from the Ambisound but this product comes close. I can turn up the volume and bass thru the subwoofer and drive the rest of the family out of the house with it. The sound quality is very good on TV, CD and DVD. The disc player works well and I like the the way the player cover slides open for disc loading. You can't tell that there is a CD/DVD player in the speaker bar when the cover is closed.
The Ambisound looks good and the controls integrate nicely with the Philips TV it is hooked too. It comes with an iPod dock (this is an extra with the Denon system)so you can listen/watch to your iPod music/video library through it.
I am happy I purchased this product and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good quality two piece (speaker bar and subwoofer) system.
- Be careful buying this product if you expect to upconvert to 1080p resolution. There is a discussion thread concerning this in the discussion area so check it out. Essentially you get significant video noise in the form of green vertical lines in 1080p. Frankly, the more I read the more I suspect that most people simply haven't tried 1080p and thus haven't encountered this yet. Or they don't have a 1080p capable TV. Could be wrong about that but I do know that Philips has their head in the sand when it comes to this problem and their customer service (if you can even call it that) is horrible. Too bad because the unit is a good idea, looks great, and otherwise functions as advertised. I'd wait until another company with a clue comes out with something similar in Blue Ray.
- The Surround sound experience is somewhat ambiguous, there are moments during a movie where you are indeed tricked into thinking you are hearing sound effects from the side or behind, but 90% of the time you won't.
In addition, just having one digital input (and co-ax!) seems a bit outdated to me. And what's the idea behind having it in the subwoofer rather than the main bar, where all the other plugs are?
However, the set-up is really easy and I don't miss all the wires my previous 5.1-system had at all! And the design is very sleek, too.
All in all, you get an audio system that is much less "invasive" in your living room, but you pay with a fairly limited Surround experience.
- I was excited about this unit but ended up returning it when I discovered it has no optical input. Both of my HDTVs pass-thru sound via an optical output and that's really what I wanted from a unit. Next time I'll do a better job reading the specs!

5 comments about Panasonic SC-PT1050 Deluxe Home Theater System with 5-DVD Changer.
- Excellent product for those who want good sound, but not the complexity or expense of buying individual components. Only issues in installation involved activating the subwoofer, and a lack of clarity surrounding making the audio connection.
- Unfortunately, the wireless function stopped working after one day of use. Nonetheless, I'm assuming that I just got a dud, and I'm giving a good review based on my experience while it was working. Other than volume lacking a bit as others have mentioned, I was very pleased with audio, picture quality, ease of setup - and disassembly :( Also worth mentioning that aesthetically, the unit is beautiful.
- Just installed this system. Have a total of 4hrs listening time on it, but I am pretty good at setup and sound adjustement. My previous system was a Sony Dream System(BTW, DO NOT BUY ONE!!!)and though it was a COMPLETE PILE OF UNRELIABLE CRAP, it sounded GREAT! The Sony's highs were significantly better than this system.
PROs:
1. Easy set up, no wires to snake everywhere. Rear speakers mounted on wall easy and box hidden under couch.
2. SUB is AMAZING! This thing is nearly too much!
3. Beautifuly crafted and finished(looks more expensive that it is!)
4. Quick CD changes/swaps/and play feature.
5. Surround is flawless. No delay, no 'unresponsive'. You would swear they were wired like a traditional system.
CONs:
1. I havnt been able to 'clean up' the sound. I like clear and crisp, and thus far, I havnt gotten it. That is a big dissapointment for me.
2. Reciever is HUGE!
3. Lack of PERSONAL sound adjustement(Treble, Mid, Lows, etc...).
Overall, this is a great product. It does exactly what it says, it is easy to set up(yes, sub included!) and it looks great. Just look at the reviews....if all you can find to complain about is the 'manual being too small', then it MUST be good!lol Now....if only I can figure out how to make the highs come out...
- I'd like to review this item but I have yet to receive it. I placed my order on March 15 and was told it may take two months for delivery after I ordered it. Two months came and went and was given a new estimated delivery date. That date has also past and I'm now being told by Amazon that they don't know when they'll get it in stock and they'll email me if they ever do. Meanwhile they still have it for sale. Why continue to take orders for an item you can't fulfill?
- I bought this system through buy.com first and received it at home defective: the sub-woofer doesn't switch on (zero light, not even the red one while waiting for shynch). So I returned to the system to Buy.com and decided to buy it from a more reliable website ==> Amazon.com
Unfortunately the new system has the same problem.. and I made sure it is not my mistake while I set up it...
So now, I will bring it to the reparation center. Otherwise, I would spend the shipping fees and loose it for the second time.
Hope this story will help you.
Emanuele

5 comments about Sony HT7100DH Component Home Theater System with HDMI.
- I am using this as the brain for my entertainment system in the living room. So far I have a Sony 40" Bravia 1080p connected, a HD-DVR, a turntable, the 5-disc changer, a separate CD player, a nintendo wii, and an ipod dock. I haven't run into much trouble with the lack of an audio feed through the HDMI, since all the audio is going through this amplifier anyway - I just keep the television audio muted and it just plays directly through the 5 speakers - no problem. I would have liked one more HDMI input, but other than that, it's great and I still have more room for additional audio sources, which you can't say for most HTIBs. I wasn't impressed with the auto audio calibration, and had to go back in and raise the volume of the speakers independently to get the volume and balance that this system should have. I guess it was a good starting point, and then I just adjusted from there. The DVD player hooked up through HDMI running to my sony 1080p TV looks awesome - 480p DVDs almost looks truly HD. One thing I would have liked is for one of the inputs to have a pre-amp built in, for a turntable or unpowered iPod dock, but that's a small 'wish'. Overall, fantastic buy - and I got mine for under $400.
- Bought the system for the many inputs and outputs to accompany the new DLP television. Hooking the HDMI cables to the unit seemed to be over kill once it was realized the TV had more than enough of these connections for the blue-ray, HD DVD and the Dish player. I have three other A\V units bought over the years and Sony sure puts out great units. Wish this unit put out more volume and had wireless speakers for the rear channels. But, the family thinks I turn the volume to the stops because I,m going deaf. I just like the music and movie viewing at a level consistent with an eighties rock concert. My only real complaint is the delivery service. I was called that the package was to arrive and needed to be home to take delivery. I was home but no knock on the door; to boot it was left in the carport with the neighbor signing for it. Good thing I live in a small town. Otherwise, for a great sounding modestly priced system you can not go wrong.

- For the most part, this system does what it says it will do for a reasonable price. Set up is a little complicated, but just thumb through the manual(s).
Only complaint is that in order to utilize the DMP(Digital Media Port) you have to buy a $100 docking station from Sony that is ONLY compatible with (taken from an email from Sony Support):
We are glad to assist you with your query regarding the compatibility of the iPods with your Sony Cradle for iPod. The iPods that are compatible with the Sony TDMIP1 are as follows:
1. iPod nano 2nd generation
2. iPod 5th generation
3. iPod nano 1st generation
4. iPod 4th generation (Color Display)
5. iPod 4th generation
6. iPod Mini
Of course, I only own an iPod Touch, so I am SOL (Soooooo out of luck)and apparently is anyone who has purchased an iPod in the last year or so.
- Bang for the buck is great got my for under $300. Lots of features, easy setup with mic and sound is good but not great. The hook up of the speakers wires to the receiver is unbelievable diffcult and them keep coming loose. (2) remotes why? Seems like a pieced together home theater package.Last but not least the DVD/CD player plays great but only shuffles one disc at a time! If I would have know that I wouldn't have bought this unit, who wants to shuffle one CD! I would have payed $50 more to have that feature. I hooked up my old player thru the optical input works great.
You get what you pay for.
- Wasn't sure I was going to be pleased with this system or not, after a few weeks just love it. Great system- just the right amount of inputs, nice easy setup, nice sound, and huge bang for the buck (payed $320), only complant I have is that the included DVD player when using a HDMI cable, needs a digital audio cable (either coax or optical) - seems stupid since HDMI carries digital audio. but not a huge deal

5 comments about Panasonic SC-PT650 DVD Home Theater System.
- This is a great surround sound system and with the i pod doc its a must have system. I have an i pod and i was gonna buy a i pod doc until i saw this and i was gonna spend 200$ on the i pod doc. When i saw this i lucked out. This is a great product to buy and the sound is great the surround sound for movies is really good if your looking for a home theater system for a bed room or living room. Stop when you see this one and buy it.
- First, what I like about this system, which I've had for about two weeks now: the audio quality, on TV, DVDs, and FM radio, is good for such a small, inexpensive system; and the iPod dock is a nice touch.
What doesn't impress me so far is the DVD upconversion. I've tried every possible output setting on several DVDs, and they all come out looking jagged and pixelated on my 61" Samsung DLP. I finally switched back to component cables, and they look better.
So this probably isn't the best choice if you'll be watching a lot of DVDs on a large HDTV. On the other hand, if you just want better sound from your TV shows, or have a smaller set and won't notice the upconversion problems, this is a good buy for the price.
- My husband and I are so pleased with this purchase. For the cost.. it has everything we were looking for and more. The 5-disc DVD player allows us to have both DVDs and Cds in the player ready for watching/listening. I love the fact that I can still listen to FM radio as well as upgrade to XM radio in the future.
My husband loves the fact that he can plug his iPod into the dock, charge it, and play music from it. That was a nice added feature.
The set-up took no time at all. Not complicated.
We are very happy with this puchase & would recommend it to anyone.
- Easy to set up and use. More audio control would be nice. All in all, worth the money.
- This is a great sounding system for the price and space. I don't have an extremely large living room so filling up the room with sound isn't hard to achieve; but I've always appreciated great sound. This system provides that with a small footprint. The satellite speakers sound just as good as some of the larger Panasonic speakers on other in-box systems. The subwoofer sounds particularly good for its small size. My biggest complaint is that you can not change out the factory installed 20 gauge speaker wire connected to the speakers themselves. I've not had any issues upconverting DVDs on my 32" 720p LCD tv. The 5 disc DVD player has worked out well for my family and is very easy to use. All in all, great system, just wish they hadn't hardwired such small cables to the speakers.

5 comments about Samsung HT-TX72 DVD Home Theater System.
- I recently purchased this system when it's price was sub $300 and I'm glad I didn't pay any more for it.
The system kicks out a MAJOR PUNCH in the sound department, with deep bass that will rumble the room thanks to it's HUGE subwoofer. It's as big as a PC tower case and blasts!
Sadly, you have to have it blast if you want to hear anything. There are few controls for the sound levels and trying to listen as low volumes was worse audio quality than listening to the TV with it's built in speakers.
The system is either too quiet to hear anything but voices, or too loud to hear anything other than boom.
Also, when in stereo mode, the back speakers shut off. There is one option that will do stereo with them on (Matrix Mode) but it tries to separate sounds and ends up with the speakers just making some noises sometimes and is a bit disconcerting.
The upconverting DVD player looks pretty poor on a high def television. There also is no difference with upscale from 480p to 1080i, it's just as blocky. If you've not seen a better upscaler (as found in the PS3 for example) then it might look okay, albeit blocky, but if you have seen a better one you won't be able to watch DVD's on your HDTV with this without feeling as if you're missing something.
Lastly... the fan. After a while a fan inside the receiver will kick in. This thing is LOUD. That shouldn't happen on a sound system - having something that makes listening to things worse.
Overall, I'm very dissapointed in this product and suggest you look elsewhere for a home theater system. I'm considering returning this item and wished I'd read a review like this first, so I'd know to stay away.
- I purchased this home theatre in a box for the receiver only. I run a full 5.1 set of JBL professional speakers and needed a receiver capable of giving them the power they need. The wattage output of the receiver sounds great and has plenty of options to customize the sound field for your specific room. I would have given it a 5 star rating, but the limited number of inputs caused me to give a 4. Overall, if you are looking for great sound for not a lot of money, this is the product to get. I have heard the sound out of the speakers that come with this system and they do sound good.
- I really was impressed with the sound and quality of this system. when I ordered this I wasn't expecting a lot I was just wanting surround sound speakers and a DVD/radio unit for a exciting LCD TV. This thing performers as well or close to my living room sound system that I spent 2,500$. I know next time I wont be buying a item for its Brand name and price tag.
This thing is cheaply made with cheap plastics and it isn't what you would want to be bragging about as your bad system (looks wise) but if you can hide the cheaply made unit (which has worked with no issues now for 6 months) the sound that comes from it is shocking for the price you pay. The speakers are also made of cheap light plastic but the sounds from them are amazing. The 5 disc DVD player works great so far. the Ipod Adaptor works well (its just a cord the plugs into the front of the receiver and into the Ipod) The Subwoofer gives out great bass for its size I have it turned down as it shakes the walls upstairs.
I hope this helped some of you
- To be honest, this is my first surround system so take my review for what its worth! I am not a sound aficionado either but I liked the effects immediately. The first movie I tried was the latest Harry Potter - the movie was alright but the sound quality was great! I have a 720P/1080i TV and, for me, the picture quality was good enough. Perhaps, it wouldn't be as good for a 1080p TV ...
As mentioned earlier, the sub-woofers pack a punch but it doesn't overdo it. I switched the rear speakers so I could put the tower speakers in the back which was more effective for me. I used the Optical Audio in as the HDMI in pass-through mode didn't work. Not a fault of Samsungs - my cable company has got to allow it and as noted on the forums, it can get pretty hard to get the cable reps to help.
Overall, a worthy buy
- This is my first HTiB and thoroughly enjoy it's sound for the past year. I am a Sound guy (DJ) and you can't beat the quality of the speakers for the price you pay. The larger subwoffer, compaired to other HTiB, give you more range for those low undertones and bass. Good buy!

5 comments about JVC THD60 Integrated DVD Home Theater System with iPod Dock.
- I have this unit and i hooked up my external 40 gb hd. At first it read the drive and showed the files but said the files were not supported.
I called JVC and the said to try a different file type. Now I have tried different file types, a different hard drive and even a flash drive and nothing works. They are all formated fat32, even reformated fat32, no luck.
I have called jvc 3 times and they are completely useless. The last technician told me that the unit was only tested with a 2gb flash drive and they did not say it could work with a hard drive. However, if you go to thier web site it says
"* Note: Compatible Devices
1) USB Mass Storage Class devices such as a USB flash memory device, HDD,
multimedia card reader, digital camera, etc.
2) Depending on the manufacturer, some USB devices may not be supported."
Don't count on any help from JVC if you can't figure it out. You definately have to read the manual and the fine print to get it to do many of the features that they claim.
I would not recomend this to anyone.
- excellent product for the money paid....certain setup functions were confusing @ first, but after sometime it's all second nature. i love the ipod docking station, especially since you can use the remote to control playback features.
- I purchased the system as an upgrade from an ancient unit that i was operating with. I did a lot of reasearch on comparable units and for the money it is an excellent system for the average joe. It did take some support from JVC to complete the setup but I do rate them an A+ in their effort to satisfy my ridiculously novice questions. Sound quality, value, and ease of use are high on my list of reasons to choose this model.
- I've installed several of these systems, and they deliver a stlye and performance that cannot be beat! Very clean looking...a bit limited on connections, so don't plan on hooking up a rack of gear to this system, but for a nice receiver, ipod dock, and cd/dvd play back, it delivers!
Radio mode has limted sound choices, but not a big deal....
Overall, a winner!
- This is my first HTS. I bought it mostly for the extra features like USB and Ipod plus it plays almost every file format. Sound is great and it was easy to setup. So far, I'm very happy with the purchase. I have only 2 minor criticisms. First is that it would have been nice to have some sort of program for auto-leveling the speakers once they were placed. Two, I couldn't find the batteries for my remote. But I might have thrown them out with the packaging cuz I was in such a hurry to set it up.

4 comments about Coby DVD-755 5.1 Channel DVD Player with Home Theater Speaker System.
- This DVD system does not have an aux input, so the speakers can not be used for anything else, unless you have a receiver to directly connect to the 5 speakers. So, I boudght a receiver, but I am not sure the subwoofer works right by itself (in the DVD setup, the subwoofer would receive and redirect all the channels from the DVD). As an entry-level model, it is thus not very useful: who wants to buy a separate receiver, which would cost as much as the whole entry-level system? Just look for a DVD home theater system with aux input if you like to use speakers.
- I bought this unit for my son as a gift. The DVD player completly quit working. Amazon.com and the manufacturer Coby USA will not replace it because the warranty is expired. That is money down the toilet. At least if I bought something like this from Walmart that they would honor their products.
Good luck to you.
- This is the worst peice of electronics I have ever purchased. It is absolutely dreadful in every which way. It was defective straight out of the box. And many other people report the same issues of receiver freezing, speakers not working, remote interference etc... Mine was no exception. You would think they do quality control on these, well for 70$ I guess not.
