5 comments about M-Audio USB Midisport Uno MIDI Interface.
  1. If you use Windows Vista or plan on switching to Vista, your M-Audio equipment isn't going to work the way it did in XP.

M-Audio has a Vista driver for the USB Uno but it doesn't always work. Initially, after I installed the Vista driver that I downloaded from M-Audio's support page, everything seemed to work fine. But after a few hours of working in Reason 4.0, I noticed that the sounds weren't quite right. Everything that I was playing through my keyboard, which was connected via the USB Uno, sounded like poor quality samples. At first I thought it was my soundcard (M-Audio Fast Track USB. I wrote a review for that as well) but I played a drum pattern in ReDrum without my keyboard and everything sounded normal. I then tested the USB Uno with another MIDI controller and got the same results, low quality sounds. After uninstalling and reinstalling the USB Uno driver a couple of times, the sounds triggered by my keyboard seemed to be working okay again. When I decided to use it again later that week, the same sound issue reemerged. Personally, I will not be purchasing anymore M-Audio products due to their poor Vista drivers.

  2. I used this cable to program a midi board with a sysex command. It worked, no problems, but the cable is flimsy and I don't see using it for an extended period of time. It's cheaply made and seems it will break after a few uses.

  3. I was given this, along with an old QuickShot MIDI keyboard controller. I bought a Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 5-Port PCI Card and got updated Midisport drivers for my Mac G4 (OS 10.4.11) from M-Audio's website. I use this setup to access the sounds in GarageBand and play around with MIDI. Everything works fine. But, admittedly, this is not much of a test of the Interface, since the controller has only a MIDI out.

  4. M-Audio has an awesome product here. Realize that I am using it on a Mac and with a Yamaha keyboard. I checked other reviews before buying this and the Mac and Yamaha combo was reportedly great. I now agree! My daughter is thrilled and I know we will have days, months, maybe years of fun using this.

  5. I actually got this to work with my Yamaha P-80, but I paid dearly for it.

I'm running Windows XP and during the driver installation, I got the "...has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatability with Windows XP" message.

OK, the next paragraph was really scary - "Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabalize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing."

M-Audio's user guide ACTUALLY INSTRUCTS you to click the "Continue Anyway" button, so instead of stopping the install and returning this item for a refund, I trusted them and continued the install (you actually get warned twice not to install). BIG MISTAKE!

After the install, I found out my Email and Internet services were not working. Somehow, the Midisport installation managed to turn off my Broadcom network adapter, and if I hadn't had the help of AT&T tech support, I would have concluded that I had a hardware problem with my Ethernet connection. Don't know yet if anything else got messed up.

As an added bonus, there's also a warning sticker hidden inside the package advising you, for reasons I won't even get into, to wash your hands after handling the product. I am not making this up.

I have never had this type of problem installing a USB device, and I have about 6 of them.

Avoid, unless you can take the risk.

5 comments about PORTABLE CLASS T DIG AMP.
  1. I was going to do ANYTHING to get rid of the cell phone buzz my old speakers gave out. I couldn't handle it any more. Besides, my cell phone is hooked up to my computer, and Im on the computer all of the time, so the noise my computer speakers made from my cell phone was RIDICULOUS!

This little amp solved my problem. I can leave it on all day and it stays cool, it makes NO noise (my cell phone sits right next to it), and it has a cool blue lit volume knob that matches my monitors on/off switch. I added a pair of JBL control 1xtreme speakers (passive- not powered) for $75.00 - bringing the total cost to $125.00. Neighbors wont be complaining about the loudness, but for a computer speaker set-up, its perfect.

The T DIG amp pushes between 10 and 15 watts and its enough to make the JBLs sound great for around the computer desk (the speakers can handle WAyyy more wattage, but its absolutely perfect for what I needed).

The T DIG Amp has one power cord in, one computer speaker (green color) cord in, and two sets (red and black) speaker wires out. It also has a headphone output in case you need it. I double side taped the top of the amp to the side of my desk and its solid and out of the way. This amp also has the option of holding 1.5 v batteries (AA I believe), so you don't have to use the included AC to DC converter plug.

Anyway, the T DIG amp was not only a great (cheap) solution to my cell phone buzz issue, I got a very good sounding system now as well.

  2. Shares the same strong battery life, quality, and amazing output capabilities of it's predecessor. Packaged in a more compact and uniform enclosure.

If you are not familiar with the Sonic T amps, these little buggers will put out an honest 10-15 watts into 4 ohms (less on battery, more on AC) with crystal clear sound quality, and amazing (really) 12+ hour battery life running off 8 AA batteries. For spec junkies 10-15 watts of real, clean output is more than enough for just about any audio task short of thumping bass. Consider most car stereos have less or similar output levels.

I use these amps to power small portable speaker boxes with 2 6.5" car speakers in them. It makes for portable solution that plays loud enough for a large outside gathering, with good enough sound quality for all day listening, and the amazing battery life to boot. People are always amazed it is possible.

Alternate uses include pairing up with a decent set of bookshelf speakers to make a PC speaker system that will put all others to shame, or having basically a portable amp for ipods, laptops, or speaker testing.

Unfortunately (or fortunately for some) it also comes packed with adapter cables and an AC adapter now. The AC adapter, especially, is a costly item to purchase on it's own and it makes sense why it was bundled. But many people have or don't need these pack-ins and I would have preferred to have the option of a lower purchase price without them. I suspect the problem is that if you price out a 1 amp AC adapter and RCA splitters, you can end up with a $25 tab pretty easily. So Sonic has done most people a service / savings by packing them in and raising the base price.

It's an expensive product that remains in a class by itself. If you need it, you pretty much have to buy it.

  3. This successor to the original T-Amp now costs about twice as much, but comes with an AC adapter and adapter cables which easily makes up for it, especially if you consider that this updated version has a much nicer-looking case and volume knob. My only gripe is that you are still stuck with those annoying spring-clip speaker connections instead of having real binding posts, but oh well, it's still an excellent value and at this pricepoint has no peers.

I bought one of these for my nephew, along with a cheap pair of bookshelf speakers (Polk Monitor 30s for about a hundred bucks), and hooked it up to his computer since like most kids nowadays he mainly listens to MP3s (sigh!). It's still heads and shoulders far better sounding a combination than any 2.0 or 2.1 computer speakers, and has plenty of power for his small bedroom.

    A little word about power ratings. Sonic Impact lists this baby thusly: *Power output: 2 x 9 watts (4 ohms @ 0.04% THD + N), 2 x 15 watts (4 ohms @ 10% THD + N), 2 x 10 watts (8 ohms @ 10% THD+N).

First, ignore the 4 ohms specs since only car speakers are 4 ohms, the vast majority of home speakers are 8 ohms. Second, notice the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) numbers. You do NOT want to listen to music at 10% THD, that's going to sound very distorted, like a boombox cranked up too high. So seeing as how with a 4 ohm load this amp does 15 wpc at 10% THD and drops down to 9 wpc at 0.04% THD, we can safely assume that using the same proportion we will get 6 clean watts per channel for an 8 ohm load at 0.04% THD.

Now, perhaps 6 watts per channel sounds ridiculously paltry in light of how most traditional mass-market receivers and amps claim to run at around 100 watts per channel. You'd assume that this means this T-Amp therefore must be a pathetic weakling barely capable of putting out higher volumes than a whisper, right? WRONG.

Firstly, remember that all watts-per-channel specs especially those by mass-market makes like Sony, Onkyo, Pioneer, Yamaha, etc. tend to be grossly exaggerated purely for marketing reasons. An alleged "100 wpc" Sony receiver may in reality only put out about 35wpc! Marantz and Harman Kardon are the only large manufacturers that have honest power specs, along with smaller audiophile brands like NAD, Rotel, etc.

Secondly, in terms of actual volume, watts per channel have a LOGARITHMIC not PROPORTIONAL relation---meaning that a true "100 wpc" amp is NOT twice as loud as a "50 wpc" amp! The actual difference in volume is just 3 decibels, in fact! Which means that a true "100 wpc" amp will only give you say 6-8 decibels more volume than this humble little T-Amp!

Now where the 100 wpc amp has the advantage is that it will be able to power larger speakers with lower sensitivity and lower impedance much better: louder and cleaner. However with the typical inexpensive 8 ohm, 88-91 db sensitivity speaker, that 100wpc amp will not be dramatically more powerful than this little 6 wpc T-Amp, unless you are the type who truly blasts music to wall-shaking volumes, say at 85-100db. The T-Amp will be plenty adequate for normal, comfortable but room-filling volumes of 70-80db which is where most people listen most of the time anyway.

Now if you ARE one of those music-blasters, you can still be very happy with the T-Amp if you pair it with some high-sensitivity speakers, such as Klipsch speakers that have 95 or higher sensitivity.

The reason this T-Amp is such a spectacular value is because at typical 70-80db listening levels, it offers a sound quality that used to be available only from big, heavy traditional amplifiers that cost around $1000 and up: wide soundstage, crystalline clarity and detail without harshness or brightness, shockingly quick tight bass, and best of all, a nice full midrange. Do a Google search for "Sonic Impact T-Amp" and read all the rave reviews from audiophile websites like 6moons.

I personally own the Trends Audio T-Amp which costs about a hundred fifty but has nicer features like real binding posts and (in my opinion) a more refined sound, and there other more expensive T-Amps which use the same technology but offer a little more power or better build quality and features. But as a great basic starter amp at sixty bucks, this Sonic Impact still has no rival.

  4. I'm using this thing to drive a pair of 6 Ohm JVC speakers (each with a 6 inch woofer, a midrange and a tweeter) left over from a dead bookshelf system. This setup is located in my bedroom. I listen to classic rock, 80's, classical, and religious music. For these genre at moderate volume the music is warm and full (supposedly it mimics a tube amp sound). The source music is from an iPod (playing 192 to 256 bit rate MP3 and AAC files) connected via the line out on an iPod dock. There is plenty of power to drive these bookshelf speakers without any distortion. I'm not an audiophile, but my ears have no complaints. It is as good as everyone says. Well worth the price!

  5. This little thing is a hunk of junk, until you plug it in, hook it up, and it blooms into the most amazing audio value you can imagine. I use it to power 4 ORB speakers from a wireless airport express. This thing is small, uses barely any power, is cool, and sounds great, and can drive my speakers louder than I want to listen to them.

Sure, it is cheaply made, but it sounds great, and is a wonderful value. The only thing I'd change; real speaker wire posts instead of the little spring clips. I'd pay the $2 more it would cost the manufacturer.

  1. The cable works as expected. The miniplug is a little bulky, seems to me needlessly so, which might make it a challenge to connect to, say, an iPod with a thick skin-type case.

  2. Much better than I expected. Uses 99.99% oxygen free copper. Unlike in the picture, the ends appear to be gold plated and the connectors are sturdy. The cable itself is a matte black finish with a nice texture, and pliable-- not stiff and shiny like some cheaper ones out there. A steal for the price. Have not done audio fidelity tests-- but sounds good to me.

5 comments about TRENDnet 56K Internal PCI Data/Fax/TAM Modem (V.92, Agree Chipset).
  1. I purchased this MODEM to replace the one that came with my computer a few years ago. My best connection speed with the old MODEM was 28.8 Kbps. After installing the new one my best and most frequent connection speed is 36.0 Kbps. This has been a great improvement in page loads.

Be sure to FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY and you should have no problems with this MODEM. Read the instructions BEFORE you do ANYTHING and your installation should be every bit as fast and easy as was mine.

  2. I won't pretend to review the functionality of this device, which others have done just fine. But I will comment on a problem I and others have had and how it was fixed. I built (January 2008) a new XP SP2 system using an Intel DG965WH motherboard. I installed the drivers as directed, powered down, inserted the modem and launched XP. The modem was not recognized and did not show up in Device Mgr or using MSINFO32 on the command line. All Trendnet has on their vestigial website is to try swapping PCI slots. I did this with no luck. On a tech web site I saw the suggestion to use Control Panel / Add Hardware. When I used this function and asked XP to let me select the modem from a list, the 'Agere PCI Soft Modem' was in the list, as the drivers had apparently successfully installed, so I chose it. I told XP to look for the drivers (even tho' they were already installed) on the CD under the Windows 2000 and XP folder, and the install succeeded. Perhaps this will work for you if your computer does not find this modem. My only use for this modem is to do faxing, which is why I can't comment on the other functions.

  3. The modem never worked but was too cheap to return. It installed okay but would never actually dial out. I found another modem in an old PC in the garage and it worked just fine.

  4. This dialup pci card installed easily & has not given me any trouble. it was economically priced & that was what I was looking for.

  5. I bought this modem so that I could be alerted when I got a phone call. The software doesn't stay on my computer for more than a few minutes, then it disappears. I am not very adept at installing software so it could be something I am doing or not doing. Modem works fine in every other respect. In fact it is on my puter now!

5 comments about Nike SHJ036 Flexible Earhook Headphone - White.
  1. I liked the fancy white to go with my green nano. The sound is great and the fit is too. I have small ears and these stay put BUT the damb cord! It's short for arm band users with an extension for waist lenth. The extension part makes it heavier and now it bounces down until it starts to pull at my ears. ANNOYING! I have to readjust the cord each half mile or so.

  2. I'm shocked at how horrible these earphones are, give then price and given they are from Nike. For daily use and around the gym they're comfortable to wear and almost unnoticeable, but the earbuds sit so far out the ear that you have to turn the volume up a lot to drown out the music they're playing in the gym. For running they are completely useless. The constant bouncing of running caused them to fall out in minutes and unless you carefully manage the cord, the slight weight of the cord bouncing caused them to fall out immedatiately.

Someone at Nike needs to be fired.

  3. I bought these headphones to try something different from standard apple headphones. but - how disappointing - and bordering to misleading.
The "extendible" feature is a very heavy metal connector which makes these phones unusable for anything like running or biking. Also the behind the ear foldable things keep on getting tangled up. Back to basic apple headphones for me.

  4. I bought these headphones almost a year ago, and I LOVE them and have never had ANY problems. At first, you have to get used to putting them in, but once you get the hang of it, it's second nature. I bought these because earbuds ALWAYS fall out of my ears while I'm running, and when I got the headphones with the speakers outside my ear with the plastic attachment to go behind the ear, they were too bulky and the plastic attachment wasn't flexible. So, these earphones are a mixture of just what I wanted and are perfect. They stay in because you bend the "flexible earhook" all the way behind your ear, and I have never had a problem with them falling out or shifting.

The only problem I could see someone having is that the cord is a little short. I wear my mp3 player up high on my arm, so it's perfect because it reaches with room to spare. They do come with an extension cord, so, if you don't lose that, you should be fine. For an example, in the airplane, the headphones won't reach plugged in to the armrest when i'm leaning back in my seat. SO, if you wear your mp3 player on your shorts or carry it, you may need to use the extension. I haven't recognized any loss in sound quality using the extension.

Only one other hint - when you get them, the comfy felt coverings that go in your ear are not on the speakers (they are not in the picture posted on amazon). Therefore, you have to put them on yourself, and I ripped one of mine a little bit because I wasn't careful. So, if you're going to put them on, be gentle.

  5. Not great, not horrible. They fit well, but the sound quality kinda stinks. I wouldn't recommend them. I used to have a similar pair that were made by sony/nike... loved those. Thought these would be the same, but they're far from it.

  1. This FMtuner is the best. I really recommend it to anyone. Fast delivery, good prices, will purchase from seller in the future. Thanks

  2. Setup is tricky... instructions are not very clear. Easy to "bump" it and change the frequency setting. Otherwise, it seems to work better than any of the others we have tried and I'd recommend it.

  3. I have purchased 5 other transmitters (all but one returned) and borrowed several other models/brands from friends/family. This one is the BEST BY FAR. Very little distortion even at high volumes, strong enough signal to block modest FM bleed, and transmits lower frequencies better than any (subwoofer actually works well). I have used this in four different vehicles, all with decent audio systems. Programming frequencies into the three buttons is a little arcane, but does the job.

  4. This did not work at all. Could not program it. Return the product for a refund. Not pleased at all.

  5. Does it's job. The only problem I have found is that it is too easy to hit one of the three preset station buttons and knock the sound out.

  1. If you are a professional installer or plan to hire a professional installer then this might be for you.

I originally paid someone to install a home entertainment system and everything including the remote was working fine...

...until, I wanted to add a blu-ray dvd player. Getting something added to work with this remote is a major hassle. There is no online pdf available. To get the software, you have to register your remote and then wait...and wait some more until they accept your registration.

The apparent strategy of the company is to make this remote installer friendly. A regular joe is helpless with this. Therefore they gain the allegiance of installers to recommend and sell this product for them. Anyway, I had a guy out today to reprogram it, figured all of this out, and now will have to have him come back later in the week. Today is a Saturday so contacting the company was not an option as they were closed.

  2. I found the programming software easy to use. (Check to make sure the software ships with the unit or is downloadable.) Everything is laid out nicely and the customizability is fantastic! You'll need to buy a USB/RS-232 interface cable if your PC is a recent model that lacks a 90's-style serial port.

The one big gripe I have with this remote is that it guzzles batteries like a marathon runner in the Sahara. A set of four AAA's only lasts about 3-4 weeks, plus there's no low-battery warning before it stops working. When the batteries are almost gone, it will suddenly run a power-on self-test every other time you press a button. You'll definitely want a set of rechargeables for this one.

  3. I received the item within a few days. After several days of trying to get the program to download to the remote, no instructions where included, and a call to the seller, I contacted Universal directly. They told me the program was too outdated to update, so they emailed me a new program and pdf instructions. Fantastic remote. Very Easy to program. This thing can do anything. I also bought the MX 200 Sidekick today for the young one.

  4. Easy to program and very responsive. We're back to a one remote household with multiple devices to control. My favorite aspect was the ability to use my PC to set up the commands which sends them to the remote. Any future changes or additions will be a breeze.

  5. The remote does not ship with programming instructions. The pamphlet that ships with it advises you to hire a professional programmer. In San Diego, you can hire the nerds at GeekSquad down at Best Buy to do the programming.

5 comments about Belkin F8E060 10-Piece Computer Tool Kit.
  1. Just what I needed. A small screwdriver set to keep handy. This is a great kit for what it's for. This is a 10 piece tool kit, NOT a 11 piece. I had and lost my 11 piece. The only thing missing here is the parts tube to store screws and other things as such. This tool kit has a lifetime warranty. I am very pleased with this kit and the price. You will also need a anti-static wristband belkin and amazon has you covered it's only $5.99

  2. The tools look alot larger in the picture than they really are. The vinyl case the encompasses them is about the same size as one of my hand spreaded open; it's about the same size as a small chapter book. I use the Belkin 10-piece computer tool kit to build computers out of composite parts available for purchase. The only tool I have actually used (and need) is the #1 Phillips-Head Screwdriver. It's the only tool I've needed so far for working with my chassis.

Pros: Has everything I need to open/insert computer components, cheap price, and they are easy to use due to the handles.

Cons: Could have included the Belkin Anti-Static Wrist Band with Adjustable Grounding, or at least have a proper storage space for one, which I also bought along with this. There's enough space to store my Belkin anti-static wrist band inside the storage case, but there just isn't a proper space for it to be stored neatly.

No need to buy those expensive professional computer tool kits because this is all you will ever need for exchanging parts for your computer unless you decide to tweak your computer components into different shapes for whatever purposes.

*Note: I ordered this Belkin 11-piece computer tool kit, but received the 10 piece Tool Kit instead from [...]. Both tool kits are Mfr. Part #: F8E060, and I believe the 10 piece tool kit is the updated version of the 11-piece tool kit. They both practically have the same tools (other than the demagnetization labeled for the 11-piece tool kit). The 10 piece tool kit is actually also an 11-piece tool kit because it just decided to omit counting the vinyl case, which it also comes with. I prefer the black handles of the 10-piece tool kit over the orange handles of the 11-piece tool kit, so I am not complaining about the 10-piece tool kit I received instead.

  3. I doubt I'll ever use all the tools even in this small kit, but the ones I have used perform very well. When you need a tool for fiddling with your computer, it's nice not to have to worry about 'where it's been.'

  4. A good and inexpensive tool kit for the average computer user. Just right for someone who wants to add cards or change a fan. Very handy kit to keep next to your computer.

  5. This is a nice and simple kit for basic maintenance of a pc. Seller delivered product quickly, and it arrived in perfect condition.

  1. I just received my M1000HD 4',and I connected it to my Xbox 360,replaced it with my xbox 360 hdmi cable that came with my elite 360,just to try it because I am going to use it for my PS3,and I compared the 2 cables, and I have to tell you this cable made a Huge difference,I might have to buy another one of these cables, the Picture quality is sooo much better I am now a huge monster fan because their cables really make a difference in quality,I thought that the one that comes with the 360 was the best for the xbox 360 because it comes with it,but I was completely wrong!!!.I thought the price was high, but now I realize why it was so high, because it is just so GREAT!!!!!,I Recommend this cable to everyone who owns an HDTV with hdmi slots,

  2. I have been using the HDMI400 cable for the last 2 years and since switching to the MD1000HD model recently, the difference is certainly noticeable.

The colors are more saturated and brighter scene for scene, color for color and images are sharper.

    This is a great cable.

  3. I bought this Cable for my XBOX360 I was using the regular Monster Gamer RCA cables so I decided to give those u o an get this and I saw the difference right away you can never go wrong with Monster Cables they are the best.

  4. Extraordinarily expensive when compared to generic "store brand" HDMI cables that may sell for a buck at 95% off or something. But in my case -getting this Monster cable it was very well worth it.

After purchasing a top-of-the-line Samsung LCD HDTV, and a Denon Blu-Ray player, I originally connected the two together with a cheaply-bought HDMI cable. Very bad idea. While attempting to watch Blu-ray or DVD movies, the picture would occasionally snap, click, make funky digital-checker-board patterns, blank out briefly to white, or randomly lose the HDMI signal completely and tell me so on-screen.

Upon further investigation, there seemed to be a fairly loose connector on the cheap HDMI cable where it plugged into the TV or Player - would easily pull out with very little pressure. Unplugging and re-plugging, and switching ends, and wriggling the ends seemed to help for a while, but inevitably the "loss of signal" events continued. Apparently HDMI cable connectors and jacks are not inherently particularly snug-fitting or robust, as compared to the older RCA Video Composite or Component jacks, or even the previous S-video cables.

Anyway after not a few panic and anxiety attacks, and worries about much wasted money and time, and possibly having to return the HDTV and/or Blu-Ray Player (where is that receipt and warranty card!! was the online store a "factory authorized" seller??), I finally decided to try a better HDMI cable as the lower-cost solution.

The Monster Cable M1000 HDMI Cable came promptly to the rescue. There was a very satisfying, snug, firmly robust fit into the HDTV and Blu-Ray player jacks. Resulted in a perfect picture and sound quality, with absolutely no disturbances, droputs, flashes, snaps, blanks, or "No Signal" messages. The difference in cable quality was amazing. This Monster cable is the best investment you can make in maximizing the performance and reliability of your new HDTV and Blu-Ray player. If you get an expensive HDTV and Player, don't skimp on the crucial HDMI Cable! The cheap ones are NOT RELIABLE, and if you get one of the defective ones like I did, you will not be happy.

I had never before been a fan of anything from Monster Cable, due to the absurd pricing. Now - I would buy nothing but Monster Cables.

  5. I wanted to find out whether this cable supports HDMI 1.3 - a very simple question, just yes or no. I called 4 times just to find that everybody in customer service is in training and nobody can answer my question. Great way to run a company! I am returning my $130 cable.
