- Extremely well made program. Very thoughtful. A great story told by the veterans themselves. Great interviews, recreations and images of Normandy. Would recommend it to anyone. One of the best, if not the best I've seen about D-Day!
- I had this DVD bookmarked for along time and was unable to confirm that it is a show about the Normandy campaign. As you can see from the description, there is no indication of what the show is actually about, and the DVD jacket is misleading because it shows modern combat soldiers. Extensive searching on the internet came up empty. The customer relations departments of both Amazon.com and The Discovery Channel could not confirm.
I ordered it hoping it would be the Normandy program I saw, got it today and confirmed it was in fact the excellent show I had previously seen. When I came to confirm it to the masses, I saw B. Cooke's review - thanks B. Cooke, I'm glad you're out there !
It's an excellent show with plenty of footage that I had not seen before, and I've seen my fair share !
- This is an excellent documentary with D-Day veterans discussing their experiences. However, there is a serious error. In discussing the fighting at Graignes, the narrator refers to this as a 101st Airborne Division action - NOT SO!!! It was the 507th PIR of the 82nd Airborne Division who fought there. I was quite shocked at such a glaring error in the otherwise excellent documentary. I must wonder what other errors are in the documentary in areas I am not familiar with.

3 comments about D Day - Down to Earth - Return of the 507.
- Moving account of one of the most important parachute infantry regiments, the 507th- whose fanfare has had to wait 60 years to arrive with the degree of respect and notoriety that it deserves. I have watched this film more than a few times and still cannot get through it without shedding a tear.
The real life band of brothers telling their stories in their own words when brought together for the first time in 60 years to the small town in the South of France into which they all jumped out of perfectly good aircrafts to liberate. WHEW! I'm 28 and loved this documentary. It is especially important and relevent for people of my generation to look back on the history, which the men in this film helped to create, in order to gather perspective on the current liberation going on in Iraq. A wise man once told me it is very easy to sit in the back of a coffee shop and preach "war is not the answer"- but when the question centers around a Hilter storming in, hell bent on genocide- how else will he be stopped? With a Mochachino Latte. This film captures in a vivid, beautiful way the determination, courage and deep belief in freedom and liberty that each of these soldiers carried with them into battle- and for many it was this strong belief which got them through the hardest times and delivered them back home to a grateful nation. I am proud to say my Grandfather whose name I was given shared those common beliefs with the men in this film- and as a result was alive years later to try and share them with me. For this I am forever blessed. Wonderfully entertaining, this film is truly a historical treasure. Check it out.
- This is an excellent documentary of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment's experiences on and around D-Day. The film contains moving interviews with veterans, whose stories are laced together and elaborated on by historian Martin K.A. Morgan (who also wrote a book on the subject). The documentary deals specifically with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, but speaks to a much larger audience. I recommend it to anyone with a general interest in World War II and D-Day, as well those who desire a better understanding of the experiences of veterans.
- I have been very interested in the events that lead up to WWII, and the history of the battles fought. This video was one that I did not know about, but one which should be a part of anyone's WWII library. The individual stories and revisiting the sites of some of these battles put a human spin on the tragedy of war from the view of the soldiers and the townspeople who suffered through these battles. It's good to know that there remains an appreciation on the part of these French citizens for what the cost was in terms of human sacrifice. The personal stories and memories captured in this video are priceless!

5 comments about Peter Cincotti, Live in New York with a Bonus CD "On the Moon" (Monster Music High Definition Surround Sound Audio DVD SUPERDISC).
- I ordered this without really knowing what to expect -- a 'live' concert recording perhaps? -- but the final product did not disappoint.
I've been a fan of Peter's music since his debut album release, and caught his performances at a showcase in Singapore followed by a Rome concert a few months later.
His Live In New York DVD features a comprehensive collection of all his famous works, from I Changed The Rules to Sway to St. Louis Blues and On The Moon. Filmed outdoors on a small neighbourhood street in NYC, it starts off in the day, then mellows into a beautiful sunset, before picking up the tempo as the stars emerge.
Lots of great energy here, as Peter jams with his excellent band and displays obvious enjoyment in his mega-watt smiles and rhythmic head-bopping. The sound quality on this high-definition disc is amazing, so make sure you watch it in the evening in a nice, quiet setting for maximum enjoyment.
I especially love his performances of Sway, You Don't Know Me and The Girl I Knew ( the last a bonus track and as yet unreleased ).
Guaranteed to satisfy all Peter Cincotti fans adequately. But I'm still hoping for a proper concert recording in the near future. An appreciative 'live' audience would be the icing on the cake.
- What a joy it is to watch Peter Cincotti and his band on this great DVD "Live in New York"! Peter breathes new life into the songs from both his debut album as well as his most recent release, "On The Moon" which is included with the DVD. You can hear the Ray Charles influence on "The Girl I Knew". So much so that I was certain it was one of "The Genius"'s songs! What a pleasant surprise to learn that the song was written by Peter himself! The performances are nothing short of excellent. I guarantee, "A Night in Tunisia" will leave you speechless! In this world of lip sync and lackluster deliveries of songs, Peter Cincotti is like a fine glass of Cabernet after far too many years of grape juice. And like Caberbet, he will contiue to grow better with time.
- Peter Cincotti has continued to grow as a performer of tremendous natural talent and great ability. His easy, engaging style makes him a singer and pianist that you will want to enjoy again and again.
- Sometimes you bought a DVD hoping a great sound.
Sometimens you ger some DVD hoping a great hi rez image.
In this one I hope for both and I didn't get none.
Boring, easy listening, fully marketing oriented.
The image is too lighting.
Forget about it.
- Peter Cincotti is a great pianist and singer; his voice is full of emotion and very sexy. I am so amazed at his arrangements, especially the upbeat "I Love Paris"; I can never sit still and always feel like dancing. From fast songs to slow songs, he draws me in. It doesn't hurt that he's charismatic and quite dashing as well. His band is also superb and beyond awesome. I wish there were more interviews on the DVD, but I would recommend it absolutely.

4 comments about Detention.
- When did I see Dolph Lundgren at theater last time? While watching "Detention," I was only thinking about that. At least I can say that "Dentention" is better than awful "Agent Red" "Hidden Agenda" or "Jill the Ripper." But sorry, that does not mean that his new film is good.
"Detention" is a typical kind of action film shot in Canada (by NU IMAGE), in which Dolph Lundgren stars as a history teacher Mr. Dekker, who is formerly a soldier fighting in Bosnia. Back in America, he is considering retiring, fed up with teaching the students who do not listen. So, today is the last day, and Dekker is in charge of the detention class when four terrorists led by Alex Karzis sneak into the school. Yes, armed guys in school, but for what? And the students with Dekker are trapped in the building (typical "Die Hard" situation"), and they have to fight against the baddies, but isn't that a school? Can you just break the door or something? If you thought the premise of "Toy Soldiers" is preposterous, "Detention" proves you are absolutely wrong. Sidney J. Furie ("Iron Eagle") is a veteran director who can proceed the whole thing at good speed, and I can say "Detention" is not boring. But the lack of logic is painfully felt when you see the unbelievable reason for the terrorists' attack especially when some scenes momentarily remind us of the sad memory of the real-life shooting case in USA. The actions themselves are not exciting at all, the best point being a motorcycle chasing a student in a wheelchair. The characters are stereotyped ones though Dolph Lundgren's change of pace (shown playing a high school teacher) is not a bad idea. Actually, his acting here is decent, if far from his best. Still, when we see a pregnant girl (put on detention), and her getting into labor in the auditorium, we can no longer find credibility in the film.
- Dolph Lundgren has finally done it! He finally decided to school his enemies at, well, a school! Yes! A genius indeed, Dolphage played an ex-soldier named Sam Decker who taught at a less-than-continuation school where cussing is the only language the kids know and girls are pregnant everywhere. "Detention" is so bad, it's good! Stereotypes have never been used this much, but the director achieved major insult to teens. Decker wanted to quit since he finally realized that High School High was below him and that the kids stunk, but the principal demanded that he stay and watch one, final detention class. Pity. A group of maniacs who dressed like Billy Idol took over the school and 'locked down' the school property. Of course, the movie went into "Under Siege" mode and Decker became a one-man army. The children band together and unite! A girl goes into labor, a wheelchair bound teen goes into a flurry and manages to outrun a motorcycle, another boy lives his self-fulfilling prophecy of actually getting courage to fight back and the whole gang construct this metallic/spike/shield thingy and fight bad guys in the gym! What an extremely entertaining movie and Dolph Lordgren delivers high-caliber action once again. What a deity he is! Yes! Two hots, thumbs up, and ten toes up, all the way!
- Dolph Lungren plays teacher Sam Decker in this action flick. He is about to quit his job but has one last detention class to watch. The rebellious students curse and sneak out of detention when some rather dangerous criminals take control of Hamilton High. Sam Decker (Lungren) and the students must team together against the criminals who appear to want to intercept a shipment of drugs that has been seized by the police. To make matters worse, there is a crooked cop who is helping the criminals not only obtain those drugs, but to kill anyone that may stand in their way!
Of course, there is some overacting with some of the criminals.
However, Lungren delivers another talented and highly entertaining performance in this action thriller. I rate this movie with 5 stars.
This is a must see for Dolph Lungren fans!!
- Okay, I tend to like Dolph Lundgren movies. But that's because I pretty much know what it going to happen in each one. Too bad he comes off as a poor man's Steven Segal. Which says a lot since Segal seems to be heading in a downward spiral.
Lundgren stars as a high school teacher and ex Special Forces expert. About to leave his job, his boss assigns him one last job, taking care of detention. As if having to harness and take care of these malcontents from class, a group of supposed terrorists are in the process of taking over the school once all of the students, save for these, have left.
It turns out that these are not terrorists but a group of heavily armed thieves planning the heist of an armored car. Along with their machine guns they bring along a ton of explosives.
But there's more. It seems that this group of psychotic criminals is not alone. They have ties into the government. But Dolph isn't going to play that game. Instead, he does what he can to protect the students and once he thinks that's done, heads out to deal with these crooks one to one.
These sorts of movies feel more cookie cutter style the more they come out on video. Are they entertaining? In some ways. Are they original? Not nearly as much as they should be. But they do provide a momentary does of escape from the real world.
If you've seen one Dolph Lundgren movie then you know what to expect. Plenty of gunfire, fist fights and explosions. If that isn't your cup of tea then pass it by. But if the shelves seem a little empty at the video store and this is there, you might want to give it a try.

5 comments about To Serve Them All My Days (Miniseries).
- The mini-series, "To Serve Them All My Days," kept our attention so well that we finished the four DVDs without realizing the time had gone by! It is well worth the money we spent!
- This is an excellent British Series. The teacher is a lovable
character. He has great compassion for his students and does not
suffer fools well. Beautiful country.
- Here, Andrew Davies has less propitious material than he had, later, with his production of Pride and Prejudice, but he does a superb job with an academic/historical/slightly political/romantic novel and a limited budget. The script is perfect, as is the acting. The interplay of British academics in a public school (i.e. what Americans would call a private prep school) is so close to reality as to suggest that we are viewing a documentary. The drama--with both romantic conflict and academic conflict--is muted but still very intense. The governors/trustees of the school are a special treat. After you watch the entire miniseries you will want to read the novel or check out plot summaries of it, since there are some changes between the book and the miniseries that will be of interest. Highly recommended.
- Growing up in England and attending a catholic school the characters hit home for me. Different era perhaps, but attitudes and the personalities really came to life for me.
The story line is well docummented here, so I won't repeat it.
But what I can say is the actors do a fantastic job of bringing to life the type of characters I encountered as a child. And even nearly 3 decades after it was aired on PBS the story and atmosphere of the series is as sound now as it was back then. The main character of Powlett Jones carries the brunt of series so well that even if I dissagree with his politics, he's the type of person who I would love to spend time with. Not many portrayals on film can do that. He has such a wide gammit of emotions and conduct that make for compelling vewing. He's tormented by war, acutely get's the boys attention by a solid backbone and has a gentle and submissive personality when his family and love intrests come to play...And on top of that doesn't comprimise his values even at the most vunerable moments. Fantastic acting by the main character to portray so many different aspects and make it believable.
The other characters are just as engrossing. Wheteher you like or hate them they keep your attention(At least for me) Howarth and Carters interaction from two different out looks is both funny and entertaining.
The headmaster Herries is probably the most loveable and mature individual. Has a serious side, but hates to dwell on the negatives!
There are so many others who add to the drama, but all told this series crosses the border of so many up's and downs of one persons life in anusual setting of a boarding school of the early 20th century!
Great viewing and the characters are real and down to earth.
- This DVD chronicles a fictional WWI soldier, shell-shocked from battle, as he starts out as a teacher in a wealthy boarding school and eventually comes to be the Headmaster. You watch as he overcomes his battle scars, goes head-to-head with an evil headmaster, encourages his students to greatness, wins the heart of a sweet woman and then tragically loses her to a car accident along with his children, and comes through it all as a winner. This was a series played on BBC in the mid-80's, but it remains a sweet story that will have you eagerly awaiting each new episode. Guaranteed to become a family favorite.
