5 comments about Northern Exposure: Thanksgiving.
  1. I absolutely loved this celebration of our nation's first official holiday! This episode embodies all that Thanksgiving is meant to be about. Fall is "in the air" (pumpkins & skeletons) as tomatoes go flying toward the Caucasian population on the streets. Dr. Joel Fleischman... a Jewish member of society, originally does not see history in relation to the upcoming Thanksgiving celebration through the eyes of his fellow native Indian citizen. However, thanks to the Alaskan gov't, Joel finds out that he is further "enslaved" to a fifth year of medical service to the state of Alaska. Upon realizing that this proposition is quite valid & legal, Joel resigns himself to the situation and begins to view things as hopeless. Alas, his "eyes" are now beginning to see things for the first time as a fellow native Indian. The feeling of hopelessness allows Joel to participate in the annual Fall Festival Parade typically reserved for only the native Indians (a culture of fellow victims of a sense of hopelessness, historically speaking). All is not lost, however. Joel, along with Maggie's current love interest (played by actor Anthony Edwards..E.R.), decide to lay all mental obstacles aside during the town's Thanksgiving feast...just long enough to enjoy it!!!!! You will leave this episode feeling warm & fuzzy each and every time you watch it!!!!!!

  2. This episode is a diappoinment. how can you say this episode makes you feel warm and fuzzy. it made me feel cold & icey. it think this was a supper depressing episode. WARNING! THIS EPISODE MAKES YOU FEEL ANGERY & DEPRESSED! do not watch this episode if your watching the show for the first time. watch Aura Borealis this epsiode makes you warm & Fuzzy.

  4. This episode of Northern Exposure is one of my all-time favorites. The music, the visuals with Cicely all decorated for the annual Raven pageant...I have come to associate all of that stuff with Thanksgiving now just as much as I do turkeys and pilgrims. Yes, it is depressing *in a way*, because Joel is such a sourpuss at first. But he gives a wonderful comic performance and Maggie's interaction with Mike Monroe is sweet too. Definitely one to watch over and over during harvest season.

  5. This is my favorite episode. It offers a new perspective on Thanksgiving that can only enhance our current tradition. I love the way most of the townsfolk smile and wave as tomatoes are hurled at them. It represents tolerance and respect at its quirkiest best.

  1. This is a classic!!! I just wish it would show up on DVD some day. Even if you can find it on VHS, it is worth having!

One additional note - I was able to burn the video to a DVD (no, I won't send or sell you a copy) so that I don't have to rely on my tape. You may have similar luck.

Now they just have to put it out on a true DVD and clean up the video.

  2. I saw this special on TV as a kid and absolutely loved it! The opening sequence with the bird and the turtle is priceless, with the 'Dooky Bird' trying to get John the turtle started by yanking on his tail. Lots of sight gags as well, such as B.C. discovering fire. [He touches it, it burns him, so he 'kills' it with his club, only to have the club catch fire and burn him. Voice work by one of the greats, Dawes Butler.

    Rich K.

  3. VHS was in excellent condition for being as old as it was. If I ever need to do business with him again, I will do so.

  4. As the story begins, B.C. narrates in a Jack Benny type voice. All the cave people that populate B.C., including Wiley, Peter, and Thor are trying to track down a turkey so that Fat Broad can add it to her tasty rock soup. The only problem is that no one has ever seen a turkey before. Meanwhile the real but tricky turkey is on the run. Even if they find the turkey, the dinosaur ate the soup before they can add it in and managed to put out the first cooking fire. The first half is mostly fast running gags that will keep you in stitches, including some fire invention running gags. The rest is the events surrounding the turkey. Even the Midnight Skulker pays a visit.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Voice actors include Daws Butler as B.C. and as Clumsy (He was a prolific voice actor for commercials and Hanna Barbera Studios at the time, doing such famous voices as Cap'n Crunch, Quisp, Yogi Bear, Snagglepuss, Elroy Jetson, Huckleberry Hound, & dozens more.); Joanie Summers as Fat Broad and as Cute Chick, (She also voiced on another great animated Thanksgiving show, "The Mouse on the Mayflower"); Bob Holt as both Wiley and Grog, (Bob did work for Hanna Barbera including the voice of Grape Ape); and the famous Don Messick as Peter, Thor, and the Turkey, (Don was a famous voice actor as the voice of Scooby Doo, the voice of Astro the dog on the Jetsons, Atom Ant, The Ranger on Yogi Bear, the dog Bandit on Jonny Quest, Dr. Benton Quest and dozens more).

This story has a basic plot about the turkey that starts about half way through the show, the first half is mostly unrelated gags strung together. Johnny Hart's comic strip B.C comes to life in this 30 minute animated special made for T.V. that first aired on November 19, 1973 on NBC Television. Abe Levitow formerly of the zany UPA studio helped produce and direct this show through Levitow/Hanson films. The script was written by Johnny Hart and Jack Caprio. The jazz soundtrack is by Danny Darpino. The backgrounds are very authentic for the strip and the colors are just right, all backgrounds were by Tony Rivera. The same night that the original B.C. First Thanksgiving premiered was the first night for another new animated Thanksgiving special, "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving". In 1981 the B.C. gang returned with another TV show listed as B.C. Christmas Special", but also listed at this site as "BC Special Christmas". That special was made by a different team and has one continous plot from beginning to end.

Overall this is an enjoyable holiday special for the season, suitable for the whole family, and definately deserving of 5 stars.

  5. Our whole family would gather around the TV set on Wednesday night--the day before Thanksgiving--to watch a scratchy, yellowing video tape that I had recorded to first time this played. Now we can do that again with a "real' tape and enjoy it again. Thanks.

5 comments about Garfield's Thanksgiving.
  1. Thanksgiving is coming and Garfield's in the spirt, but he is put on a diet! Jon invites Liz and creates a Thanksgiving dinner disaster! It's up to Grandma to save the holiday! This movie is great! A+!

  2. I was disapointed that the story wasn't as good as Garfield's Christmas and Garfield's Halloween. The animation in Garfield's Thanksgiving wasn't as good as the animation in Garfield's Christmas. Jon's Grandmother was very funny. The actress who did the voice of Jon's Grandmother also did her voice in the Chrismtas Special, so I disapointed that Jon's Grandmother's voice didn't sound the same. Because she is my second favorite character in Garfield's Christmas.

This is a [poor] excuse for a Garfield Holiday Special. It's not worth the high price that it is selling for. I do have it in my collection. But I didn't pay over $...for it.

I don't suggest buying this video. I do however strongly suggest Garfield's Halloween Adventure and Garfield's Christmas Special.

  3. I have watched "Garfield's Thanksgiving" every year at Thanksgiving and I never grow tired of it. It's funnier than any other Thanksgiving cartoon show ever. Here in this cute and top-notch cartoon show, Jon and Garfield have a successful shopping trip to prepare for Thanksgiving. Then they have to go to THE VET! Garfield is so tensed up, that Liz, the vet, says that Garfield has to go on a diet while Jon tries to break a date with Liz in an unusual way: he holds his breath until she says she'll go out with him. He held out pretty long. The diet is torture for Garfield, but Jon can't wait for the next day. Get this. When he's about to pull everything he needs the next morning, he takes out everything from underneath the counter including the turkey itself. That counter must have a miniature fridge and everything down there. He sets the oven at 500 degrees. That's broil! It all turns out well, before Jon ruins the whole meal, but it's Grandma to the rescue. Jon tries to stall Liz off by telling her about what countires call their Thanksgiving and the whole history. Grandma is busy in the kitchen and ready to preare the table. That is quick work. It's a nice dinner scene in there, and it sort of warms you. Don't miss this Thanksgiving treat that should include a stuffed turkey. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

  4. If there is one thing that kids are going to pick up from animated Thanksgiving specials featuring their favorite cartoon and comic strip characters it is going to be that cooking a Thanksgiving dinner is hard work (which would explain why the kids are parked in front of the television watching parades and animated Thanksgiving special featuring their favorite cartoon and comic strip characters while mom is in the kitchen doing the hard work and dad is staying out of the way watching football). This lesson is amply illustrated in "Garfield's Thanksgiving," where Jon (voice of Tom Huge) is in charge of doing the turkey with all the trimmings, which, you know, is never going to work (even with the magic counter). Meanwhile, a bad situation is made even worse when Garfield (Lorenzo Music) is forced to go on a diet just as Turkey Day is approaching. Throw Odie (Gregg Berger) and Dr. Liz Wilson (Julie Payne) into the mix and it is a good thing that Grandma (Pat Carroll) will be around to save the day. All things considered, this is one of the funnier Thanksgiving animated specials and is a good bet to make the kiddies giddy. However, as always, parents will have to watch this one at least once to explain who Orson Welles was and other jokes that are going to go right over the heads of the kiddies. Note: Actress Julie Payne is the daughter of John Payne ("Miracle on 34th Street") and Anne Shirley (formerly Dawn O'Day, who changed her name to Anne Shirley to play Anne Shirley in "Anne of Green Gables").

  5. This holiday special was really good. I had never even seen or heard of this until it came out on dvd, so I picked it up. Oh my gosh. Funny! Especially Grandma. She never fails to disappoint in the humor department. And what's Jon thinking, trying to cook a fully-frozen turkey at 500 degrees for about an hour? It's clear Mom never taught him to cook. Garfield goes to the vet once again, if only for Jon's benefit. Can Jon keep Liz from being bored to death on their Thanksgiving date? Can Garfield survive his new diet? Can Grandma pull a miracle recipe out of the hat and save Thanksgiving? Buy this great cartoon and find out!

P.S. I agree with the previous review about storing food in the lower shelves. Didn't know people kept fridges down that low. Only in a cartoon.

5 comments about Peanuts: A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.
  1. It's Charlie Brown and Snoopy! Who doesn't love a classic, holiday, fun video. A great video to bring back memories and create new ones with your children.

  2. I love him! He's always so annoyed and fed up with things. A bit like me!!

nd I smiled. But I laughed more.

The "chemistry" between Charlie and Peppermint Patty is one to see. And Marcie saying stuff like, "Stop holding my hand, Charlie Brown." and other things to fire Patty up!

And the grandma and teachers speaking in the, "Wo Wo Wo Wo" language provides a few laughs also!

I loved it. I laughed so hard when Patty was disappointed with the "meal" that Snoopy prepared for everyone. "Popcorn? Buttered toast!!? Where are the mashed potatoes???!"

There are fewer cartoons as good as this here.

    5+ stars.

    Love ya, Charlie Brown!!

    <3

  3. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving was something I looked forward to every year. It cracks me up when Peppermint Patty invites herself and a bunch of people over then gripes about the food. However, Charlie Brown saving the day by bringing his buddies over to Grandma's house is a good reminder of how to be a true friend.

  4. What a wonderful classic - it takes me back to my childhood days! Of course, we didn't have DVD's (or VHS for that matter!) so whenever this great movie came on t.v. it was a BIG event! I make it special for my kids too - watching it at night with JIFFY POP popcorn, just like the good ol' days! I also think you get a GREAT DEAL on Amazon - it is the best price I've found AND if you spend $40, shipping is FREE! GREAT DEAL and a GREAT MOVIE! EnJoY!

  5. I decided to watch a series of old classics on DVD and gravitated to the Charlie Browns right away. This was not only due to my loving them as a kid but also due to the big biography on Charles Schulz's life that just got released. There's an innocence about these videos one seldom feels from contemporary specials. Unquestionably, the Peanuts series are a joy to re-experience. Furthermore, there is something incredibly non-PC about the dynamics of these characters. The over-the-top manipulative ways of Peppermint Patty and Lucy are not something producers would depict today. The same is true of Marcie's habit of calling Peppermint Patty "Sir." Saying grace before dinner would not do in a 2007 film either. Snoopy is a little aggressive for our new tastes. His pop gun musket would earn him a 10 day mandatory suspension were he to take it to school with him today. Not to mention that neither the beagle nor anyone else would dare to put butter on toast as he does here. Ah, the good old days may be gone but you can savor them once again with Charlie Brown.

2 comments about Bugs Bunnys Thanksgiving Diet.
  1. I am an avid Looney Tunes fan and I must say that Bugs Bunnys Thanksgiving Diet did not fulfill my every expectation. I was expecting a bunch of Bugs cartoons but instead it was a short, uninterupted movie. If you are looking for something different you might want to try this but if its the classic Bugs cartoons you are after there are plenty more tapes out there that you would be better off purchasing.

  2. That's just what I do. I watch this show the night before Thanksgiving and I never get tired of this tradition. Bugs Bunny is found as the head doctor of a clinic trying to help this obese lady bunny try to watch what she eats at the Thanksgiving table. In between, he listens to Sylvester's problems, too. A nice holiday treat to enjoy the night before or on Thanksgiving day itself. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

  1. Well, I see these people all the time in town. They weren't really known for their sense of humor, they were known for being really bad with kids. Yes, bad with kids. What can we get out of them today? Well, they were not big old homos I can tell you that much. A successful man can have any woman they want, wake up which I've had several at a concert several in one night. You don't have to be tied down to one woman all your life any more. There's no law that says you have to get married. That's right, I view it as viewing your wife as your personal property which is sexist and again bad with kids. One last time, they were bad with kids.

  1. This is the bomb there are some funny points in the movie. And a little swearing in it but about 4 words. This is a very cool movie and the price isn't bad either well worth it!!!!!!!

  2. Out of all simpsons, these are maybe the worst. They aren't really funny at all. I have 3 of these double volumes, and this is the worst. You should buy "Bart the Daredevil/Itchy,Scratchy, and Marge" Instead. Don't buy this unless you really like simpsons or you just like to buy them for a collection.

  5. We are into Season 2 of "The Simpsons" with the two episodes include on "The Best of 'The Simpsons': Volume 5." The only real commonalities between these two episodes are the idea of running (Mr. Burns for governor and Bart away from home). The fact that the first focuses on Mr. Burns and the second actually has Bart apologizing to his sister, which makes them a pretty atypical pair of episodes. Maybe that is why I think they are both above average episodes and two of the better ones from that second season.

Episode 17, "Two Cars In Every Garage And Three Eyes On Every Fish" (Written by Sam Simon & John Swartzwelder, First aired November 1, 1990) begins with Bart and Lisa catching a three-eyed fish while fishing near the Springfield Nuclear Reactor. Do you think there might be a connection? The government does and they send a team to investigate nuclear waste coming from the plant. Mr. Burns tries to bribe them, but that fails and he has to clean up the plant or have it shut down. Homer points out that if Mr. Burns was governor he could pass laws to keep the plant open and since this is actually a good idea Mr. Burns runs for governor against the incumbent, Mary Bailey (So we do not know if we should be thinking "It's a Wonderful Life" or "Citizen Kane" on this one). Mr. Burns even spins the three-eyed fish as just an improvement by Mother Nature since three eyes are better than two. Everything is looking good for old Monty until Marge serves him up a three-eyed fish for dinner. (4.5 Krusty Burgers)

Episode 20, "Bart vs. Thanksgiving" (Written by George Meyer, First aired November 22, 1990) is actually a rather touching episode of "The Simpsons." Lisa has made a decorative centerpiece for the family's Thanksgiving dinner featuring the heroines of American history (e.g., Susan B. Anthony, Georgia O'Keefe, and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas). But during a fight with Bart the centerpiece ends up in the fireplace. Lisa runs sobbing to her room and Bart is banished to his for ruining Thanksgiving. Bart runs away from home with Santa's Little Helper and ends up at a homeless shelter when a TV crew interviews him. Eventually Bart comes home and has an epiphany as he realizes what he did to his sister. Meanwhile, Lisa does a nice homage to Allen Ginsberg in her poem, "Howl of the Unappreciated" ("I saw the best meals of my generation destroyed by the madness of my brother"). The Bart balloon in the Thanksgiving parade is a nice touch and it is good to know that the Western Hemisphere is the dancinest hemisphere of all. (5 Krusty Burgers)
