5 comments about Garfield: Holiday Celebrations (Garfield's Halloween Adventure / Garfield's Thanksgiving / A Garfield Christmas).
  1. I loved this movie when I was a child. Every year I watch the holiday specials and I look forward to seeing Garfield most of all. Now I have a daughter and she watches the Garfield holiday special any time she wants. And best of all No Commercials. That is the best thing...

  2. The episodes on the DVD are great, but the DVD will NOT play on my DVD player, which is 5 years old. I have brand new DVDs that play with no problem, and DVDs that are older than the player itself that play just fine. My guess is that something is wrong with this particular DVD. I have never had this problem before.

  3. This is a great set for kids I remember watching them when I was little, and loved it, so does my daughter! highly recommended.

  4. Chances are, if you're reading this review, you've probably seen a Garfield special or two in your days. If you were born after the 1980s, though, these might come as a bit of an enigma to you. Sure, we all know Garfield from the comics, but these animated TV specials were created just for the holidays and were aired annually for a while.

I don't want to give away any spoilers in case you haven't seen them yet, so I will be brief and non-descript. The three holidays on this DVD are Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. In each one, the main lesson to learn is the value of friendship and family over personal greed. (Garfield is known to be a glutton, after all). Not only are they heart-warming stories, but they are also quite hilarious! Laughter amongst friends and family is a great way to spend a quality evening in. These cartoons have lasting year-round quality, too, so don't feel the need to only pull out this DVD when the holidays roll around.

Sorry, nothing in the way of special features or bonus material. It is fairly straightforward with no frills at all. All the better, though, for skipping right to the reason why you would add this disc to your collection anyways. A must-own for all Garfield fans and a great treat for young and old alike! (It's one of the few cartoons my father actually enjoyed!)

  5. I love all these classic's and how great to have them all on one dvd. Great deal also.

5 comments about Dutch.
  1. A friend of mine loaned me his VHS copy of this movie a couple years ago and I'd never even heard of it. I was a little skeptical at first, but I trusted his judgment based on previous referrals and so I watched it.

It's pretty excellent across the board. It's the best work I've ever seen Ed O'Neill do and that's for sure. He just shines in his role here. The movie is full of surprises so I'll not say anymore about the details, but the writing, acting and directing here are top notch as far as humor goes. There are several lines of dialogue that you will make part of your permanent vocabulary after watching this film similar to the way you adopted lines out of Caddyshack into your everyday world.

To give you just a tiny taste of what's waiting for you, Ed's character steps out of a truck stop restaurant and belches rather loudly prompting the line, "Ahhhhh... nothing burps like bacon!"

    You've been warned.

  2. This is a good movie that takes awhile to develop. If you don't sit through the obnoxious son showing how bad he is, then you will miss his transition to a pretty good kid. Dutch is what he is a blue collar guy that although hard nosed, has a heart of gold. This is one of those roadtrips that shows the seemy side of life and the school of hard knocks. Good family entertainment. I recommend for rental first. It may not suit all tastes.

  3. This movie shows how a rich boy is showed the real meaning of family life. We all enjoyed this movie. Would recommend.

  4. I love this movie. It is funny, sweet, and touching without being sappy. Definitely worth buying!

  5. They say you can't judge a book by it's cover. I'm sure someone has said the same about DVDs. We all know that's a bunch of baloney. This film wasn't Oscar material, but it is one of the most quotable movies around. Ed O'Neill is absolutely hilarious, and the trash talk that comes out of his mouth is sublime. The kid (I'm too lazy to look up the actor's name) is so repellant that you'll squirm with delight as Dutch knocks him down to size. The funny thing about this movie is that not that many people will admit to having seen it, but if you have one of those people in your car, and you get lucky enough to have them ask you to pull over, you can always crack them up by saying, "I don't know. This is a two lane highway, and that's a soft shoulder."

Hmm, come to think of it, my brother is the only person who laughs when I say that.

    Anyway, it's good.

5 comments about Pieces of April.
  1. This movie really was wonderful. It shows how important it is to have family and to share your life with them.To remember the good times and make the best of all of it.

  2. This movie is quirky, and very different than anything I have ever watched. However, I love it! Such a great indie movie, and I am surprised it didn't get more publicity. Katie Holmes is superb in this film as are ALL the actors.

  3. Pieces of April This is the hilarious story of a dysfunctional family, although one that almost everyone can relate to. The main character's mother (played by Patricia Clarkson)is one for the books!!!!

  4. I tell you one thing; a movie about a girl baking a turkey does not sound like it's going to be interesting or even remotely entertaining. In fact, to be completely honest the only reason I was interested in seeing `Pieces of April' was because I had a huge crush on Katie Holmes for a while (that was before she went cuckoo for Cruise puffs) and it really wasn't until Patricia Clarkson got the Oscar nomination for her performance in the film that I made my mind up to actually see it. I'm so glad that I did, for `Pieces of April' is not only entertaining and interesting, but it is such an emotionally connected piece. It was something that proved to be so much more than I expected it to be.

I'm stunned, literally stunned, at the finished product.

Katie Holmes plays April Burns, the wayward daughter of Jim and Joy Burns. Having straightened her life out to the best of her ability, April decides that she needs to reconnect with her family, which includes her brother Timmy and her sister Beth. The task of having her family over for Thanksgiving dinner though, proves to be a little more than April bargained for. There to hold her together is her supportive boyfriend Bobby. Add to the strain of seeing her disapproving and judgmental family the fact that her mother Joy is dying of cancer and you have a very stressful and nerve-racking day. The film follows April as she prepares for her family's arrival as well as follows her family as they travel to see her.

What I appreciate so much about this film is, having been in a very similar situation with my own `wayward' sister, it fleshes out quite accurately the different ways in which family members deal with the situation. You have the father who so badly wants to see the good in April, his eldest daughter and obvious heartbeat. You have the mother who is so tired of the drama and the disappointment that she'd rather not have to deal with her at all. This doesn't mean she doesn't love her daughter or have affection for her. Rather, it's the type of love that burns so much within a person that you would rather avoid the ones you love than see them in yet another degrading situation. You also have the sister who resents April for what she has done to the family. She comes off as cruel and rude but on the inside she is just hurt. Last you have the brother who doesn't exactly know how to deal with the issues. He loves his sister and may or may not even truly understand why everyone is so up in arms over her life. All he sees is that fact that she is his sister, his flesh and blood, and that's all that matters to him.

The performances within the film are glorious, and I mean that in everyway possible. Patricia Clarkson is phenomenal as Joy, truly heartbreaking and real. Oliver Platt serves up one of his finest performances to date as Jim; you can really feel his pain, his turmoil. John Gallagher Jr. and Alison Pill depict April's siblings with honesty and realism and Derek Luke is wonderful, if not a tad underused, as Bobby. I just love where this kid is headed. Everything he's done so far has been top notch, even when the film isn't. Alice Drummond is memorable as Grandma Dottie and Sean Hayes has a very strange yet memorable role in the film as well. All of these performances just further accentuate the marvelous Katie Holmes. This performance proves that she has talent behind those good looks. She captivates as April, really getting under her skin and making her real to us. I felt her every emotion, and when she breaks down towards the end, feeling as though her family has abandoned her my eyes actually began to tear (it really doesn't take much; I'm a tad emotional).

In the end I must admit to being in love with this movie. It feels so real to me, like a chapter out of my childhood. I've been here before and I've seen these very same emotions on full display and I'm beside myself with admiration for the fact that written/director Peter Hedges got it right.

  5. After watching the wonderful Dan in Real Life, we were interested in checking out the previous work by Peter Hedges. I'm not disappointed. Pieces of April is a very different story about the same topics: love, family, and what really matters in life. Katie Holmes leads a fantastic cast (Patricia Clarkson is particularly wonderful) in this lovely movie.

5 comments about Four Brothers (Special Collector's Edition).
  1. There are not many action movies that can really sink in to me; past a level of plain 'enjoyment'. The story line took over the movie, and surpassed the action, in my humble opinion.

Four adoptive brothers, each with his own troublesome past, were adopted by a 'well know' foster mother in a very bad neighborhood. She adopted the boys that everyone doubted. Their mother is murdered in a grocery store incident and the town shuts down in a typical "noone saw a thing" attitude. Suddenly the Mercer brothers are back, Bobby, Angel, Jeremiah and Jack, together for the funeral... After the mourning, it's time to find out who killed Mom.

The movie has heart pumping scenes of car chases and shoot-outs in the middle of the street. Gangster angst and big cars. Action packed, it is, but let us not miss the relationship of these Four Brothers, with their mother and the impact their love has on those around them.

This movie surpassed my expectations. This cast came together in a believeable family-mix. I am no hollywood expert, but it is clearly evident to see the bond these four must have made during the movie! The language was a little rough. Therefore, placing this on my "Do Not Watch With Mom" list. =)

4.5 stars (2.5, if mom's in the room).

  2. This may look like a "man's movie" on the surface, but I feel anyone would enjoy it. The emotion and action in this movie makes it one to remember. Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin, and Garrett Hedlund seemed like real brothers on the screen. Its a movie I would watch over and over again.

  3. this blu-ray was amazing. the sound and picture outstanding. great blu-ray for my beginning collection. i would suggest this blu-ray to everyone

  4. Far better than others in the genre. This is a well-told tale (rare in the realm of modern movies). What could have been a simple "shoot em up" rises above the morass and spins a believable tale. This movie is well worth a watch. High recommendation!

  5. I didn't think that I would enjoy this film. The film took some time to grab me, but as the story unfolded and the action progressed I was ultimately intrigued and, in the end, hooked. This is all not to say, that I did not like a few things about the film as well. Surely certain aspects of this film just didn't work for me.

Here is the rundown of my likes and dislikes:

    Likes:
Intriguing and unique storyline. I kept thinking to myself that the storyline would make a perfect storyline for a video game.

    Fantastic soul/R&B/funk score.

Nice ensemble of actors all of whom maintained a unique character, bringing life to the film.

    Dislikes:
Going back to the acting, as much as I enjoyed the differring personalites of the actors, I was also slightly annoyed by the over-top personality of Mark Wahlberg and I also sort of felt that Garrett Hedlund's acting was in no way equal to the other three men in the film. This may be do to his character design, given the fact that he was the "baby" amongst the four brothers, however he just didn't shine like the rest.

All in all, and quite honestly I would have never have chosen to watch this film, if it weren't for a friend who threw it in with a handful of films to borrow. I am glad I did for no other reason than the fact that this is my first introduction to a John Singleton film. This film was good to OK; it was not great. However Good to OK is enough for me to consider watching all of Singleton film's and do a sort of director study as I have been doing with a number of other director's (Check out my profile and other reviews).

  1. I loved this movie. It shows a realistic look at a family during the holidays.Everyone can relate to this movie.A heartfelt movie that should be enjoyed over and over.

  2. Many of us have in-law troubles, of course. But the Stone family didn't even give Meredith a chance and hated her upon sight. They were very unlikeable. Of course, the movie tried to make you feel sorry for the Stones because the matriarch was dying, but they were all so mean-spirited without any reason. I would NOT recommend this movie. Note - the family never really apologized to Meredith for being so mean to her.

  3. The Family Stone (Widescreen Edition)
How could this movie miss? It has a great cast, a storyline that's both poignant and hilarious at the same time. The characters are diverse, but never fall into the trap of becoming cardboard or stale. I could watch this movie over and over and not get bored.

  4. I really wanted to see this movie again. It was touching. Moreover the DVD was almost new. I really enjoyed it.

  5. This movie should have been so much better than it was. It had a great cast and a solid central premise: son brings home an uptight woman who is instantly disliked by his quirky laid-back family. But the makers cluttered up the movie with too many characters and too many distractions for a feature-length movie. To work in all the extra "stuff," it should have been a miniseries or regular series much like "Brothers and Sisters."

The married pregnant daughter (and grandaughter) waiting for her husband to arrive didn't add anything to the movie but clutter. The deaf gay son and his black partner planning to adopt a baby seemed to have been included so that Meredith could stick her foot in her mouth and offend the family the maximum amount. Also, the movie was inconsistent in several areas. Sometimes the family signed in the presence of the deaf son and many times they didn't. The movie introduced Meredith's annoying mannerisms that drove the family crazy and then didn't carry through with them (thankfully so in the case of the throat clearing tic).

To top off all the other subplots cluttering up the movie, the mother has terminal cancer and has not told any of her children, except the one son who lives the farthest away and guesses something is wrong. That seemed unnecessary and maudlin.

This film would have benefitted greatly from a serious script edit to cut out the unnecessary and distracting plot clutter and focus on family love, romantic love, and opening your heart and family to new people. With more focus and less clutter, this would have been much better movie.

I was bored enough by the movie itself that I didn't bother watching any of the deleted scenes or other special features.

  1. I absolutely love this movie. This DVD arrived at my house in great condition and with a very fast shipment. Thanks for a great movie.

  2. One Special Night

This is a wonderful movie about two people who learn to love again. Katherine Howard is a pediatric cardiologist who lost her husband to cancer a year ago. She is headstrong and wants to do everything herself. Robert Woodward is a father and grandfather who's wife has altzhiemers. He is stubborn and believes women need to be taken care of because they can't do things themselves. The two meet Thanksgiving night at the hospice facility where his wife now lives and where her husband used to. Because of a big storm Robert is unable to get a cab so Katherine offers him a ride home. On the way her car hits a patch of ice and goes off the road. Stranded they manage to find an empty cabin where they find shelter for the night. Throughout the long snowy night the two get to know each other and find that they have more in common than they thought. The movie shows that first impressions aren't always what they seem.

  3. I've watched "One Special Night" whenever it is shown on TV, which is usually once a year. Very heartwarming, so I decided to buy it so I can enjoy any time. Great Christmas romance DVD.

  4. This was great the first time years ago on Hallmark and was even better the second time. Great love story

  5. This is a great movie! Julie Andrews is her charming self and James Garner is as handsome as ever!

  1. This has become my favorite Al Pacino movie, and was one of the first HD movies that I bought after purchasing my new 65" High Definition plasma TV. It is a most unique story, and it will touch your "funny bone" as well as your heart. The HD version will bring to life your favorite scenes, such as when Pacino dances the Tango with the beautiful brunette. Instead of being an outsider looking in, you'll feel as if you are actually sitting at a cocktail table by the dance floor as Al Pacino dances so gracefully. This title is a must in anyone's HD-DVD library.

  2. If this movie doesn't reach down in the middle of your gut and twist your heart, you ain't human. This is one of the best that Al has done. He really plays this part to the max. No one could have done what he has. I feel lucky that I got a copy of this DVD, but wished it would be released on blu ray instead of the other HD wanna-be.

  3. Al Pacino at his best. Great movie. Must see in High Definition TV.

  4. Without giving away the plot line. If you're a Pacino fan. This film is a must see. His character & story line are so strong. He doesn't need a leading lady to bounce off of. He carries it all on his own. It's not over-the-top Pacino grandstanding. It's a touching portrayal. It made me cry. Thanks Colonel.

  5. This is a truly remarkable movie. Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell are the perfect duo. It will make you laugh, cry, and even have you rooting for the guy that no one really likes anymore. Great purchase!

  1. This is one of my all time favorite movies. Steve Martin and John Candy are really paired so well. They provide for many hilarious moments. And the ending ALWAYS makes me cry--it's a happy ending but still a tear jerker. I also will watch it mid-year when I need a laugh. Highly recommended. :)

  2. Funny movie. John Candy and Steve Martin made a good pair for this flick. Everytime I watch this movie, it reminds me of a point in my life when I was working in NY and my wife and kids were living in Florida, and I did whatever it took to get back to see them whenever I had the opportunity.

  3. Having worked in the travel industry for the last 20 years; this movie rocks. It really gives an up close and personal look at one can happen if there is just one mishap. The matchup of Candy and Martin is first rate; they meshed so well together. Too bad John Candy died before he could ever work with Steve Martin Again. The writing and story line are written perfectly and the gags come across on screen first rate. This is my 2nd favorite John Hughes movie behind 16 candles.

  4. Sorry - usually I "live and let live" ... and I agree that all should have and express their own opinion - but c'mon, Amazon! Where did you dig up this Marshall Fine, who provides your official review on this product?

I don't get it - did his medication not kick in before writing this review? I am trying not to out-and-out attack him in text ... but it ain't easy!

On the subject of this movie - he is WAY off. Please IGNORE AMAZON'S OFFICIAL REVIEW and read the comments of the "rank and file" who have seen the movie. You will see a solid wall of people who reject Mr. Fine's interpretation of this film. Or just look at the Average Customer Review!

I consider my tastes in humor very refined. First of all, I am not a big fan of "toilet humor". And even though this film sometimes dips slightly in that direction, it remains one of my favorite comedies of all time.

Martin is at his stuffy best and Candy at his socially inept best. The two of them, forced to interact, provide some of the funniest moments ever set to film. As far as buddy pics go, only Lemmon and Matthau did it better.

I can't say I really appreciated alot of stuff that John Candy did. I thought it was very lowbrow and repetitive, derivative of better stuff from the likes of John Belushi (and even lesser stuff from Chris Farley).

However, in this film, he just blew me away! He shows talents in this movie that i wish I had seen more of, including several unexpected and satisfying turns into solid drama. We've seen this overbearing oaf character of his before --- but this time around, you will actually sympathize with that character.

Plus - this must be said - the last five minutes of this movie is so exquisitely performed and edited and scored ... that it NEVER fails to turn me (a burly forty-something man) into a happily slobbering mess. A shocking secret is laid bare with just a few words --- and everything that has come before it is given a new light.

If the last few minutes of this movie doesn't at least bring a lump to your throat - sorry, but you have no soul. :) It is one of the finest and most satisfying movie endings OF ALL TIME - in my book, it ranks right up there with Spielberg or Capra at their best.

The final freeze-frame of this movie is burned indelibly into my brain. I will never forget what a solid talent John Candy could be from this one shot alone. I cannot look at it without tearing up.

I realize I'm probably coming off as over-passionate about this ... but PLEASE IGNORE MR. FINE'S REVIEW! Buy this movie as a solid addition to your comedy collection, or at least rent it elsewhere. I promise, you will not be disappointed!

PARENTAL ADVISORY: Believe it or not, despite the R rating, it is a great family film! However, when you see Steve Martin throw his suitcase to the ground in the airport parking lot and stomp his way back to the car rental place ... um, turn the sound down for the following scene ... or clear the kids out of the room.

What follows is pretty much the ONLY reason the movie carries an "R" rating. Martin drops the F-bomb about 15 times in a single tirade. It is a hilarious scene and well-justified, but it must have been a difficult and courageous decision to include this scene, since cutting it out would've automatically given this movie a PG rating. With the sole exception of this scene, the rest of the movie is surprisingly family-friendly.

(Oh, and my favorite piece of trivia about this movie - in the scene where Candy attempts to rent a hotel room by bartering his watch? The desk clerk is a cameo by Dan Castellaneta - the voice of Homer Simpson.)

  5. When I think of "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" I smile. It is an absolutely wonderful movie. Yes, it is regarded as a comedy but when I think of it I think of it as more of a drama. The jokes don't get old. This is probably my favorite comedy of all time. Hughes takes the traveling nightmare genre to a whole new level. It's more a triumph in script writing than anything

For those who don't already know Planes, Trains and Automobiles is simple in its approach. Everything that can go wrong does. It's a comic routine that can be funny, but here it is a trip to hysterical. The plot is simple enough as well. Neal Page (Steve Martin) is on his way home for Thanksgiving. He's your typical businessman that works in New York and has a family he wants to see in Chicago. The only problem is everything from delayed flights to ripped up car tickets happen on the way. Only worsening matters, Del Griffith (John Candy), is along for the ride. An annoying shower curtain ring salesman, Neal can't get rid of him no matter how hard he tries.

John Candy gives the performance of his too short career as the traveling shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith. What makes Candy's performance so impressive is that while Del is an obnoxious, annoying slob, Candy shows that this is a very lonely, sweet, kind, and caring man with a great heart. This is a man who is putting his needs behind the needs of another person, a complete stranger in Neil Page. Candy creates an incredibly complex man, who the audience really gets to know and genuinely care about. They say comedies are the hardest films to get nominated for Oscars, which is true. And while "PT & A" is no Best Picture winner, it certainly in my mind has a performance not just worthy of a nomination but of an Oscar as well. It would be interesting to see how Candy's performance would be regarded if the film came out today.

The ending, whew!, it's a rough one. And again, despite all the wonderful comedy in this film, whenever I think of "PT & A" I think of the wonderful character of Del Griffith and the powerful ending. If you haven't seen this movie, rent it. I strongly recommend it as a first rate comedy that doesn't come along often. Whether it's the music capturing the perfect mood in the hilarious bedroom scene or meeting Owen, it's an earnestly frantic and tender trip through the modern transportation system.

  1. Excellent documentary that will take you back in time with amazing musical highlights from The Band's last concert in 1978. Awesome!!!

  2. Every Baby Boomer should see this DVD. I've watched parts of it over and over. The Band, Joni Mitchell, Neal Young, Bob Dylan. All the great singer/song writers of the time. Excellent.

  3. New Last Waltz Video was defective. It was in a new sealed box but was not recorded properly

  4. Somehow I had managed to get through life never having seen the movie version of "The Last Waltz" concert until just recently. I regret not having watched this sooner. The Band and almost all of their guest performers were fabulous. The one exception is Neil Diamond - while I think Neil Diamond is a great musician with plenty to offer us, his presence just didn't seem to be a good fit at this concert (and this has been discussed in other reviews). I did find Robbie Robertson's ego trip with all of the focus on himself quite annoying, but aside from too much footage of Robbie this is a great concert movie. The music is upbeat and very energetic, and I loved watching all of the great musicians that I grew up listening to. Definitely watch this concert!

  5. I've watched this movie everytime I've seen it playing on tv. But watching it on Blue Ray has really shown me how great it truly is to watch. The Blue Ray sound will make this worth buying alone. I highly recommend it.
