3 comments about Thanksgiving Day.
- Being a fan of this joyous holiday and celebration, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I loved all the bright fall colors used in the illustrations. The book gives a brief history of the Thanksgiving holiday and discusses modern festivities. It made me very hungry for pumpkin pie and turkey! Any child would love this book especially during the fall. If I was captivated by the bright orange pumpkins and trees, I'm sure children would be too!
- Bright pictures and simple sentences make this thoroughlyAmerican holiday accessible and fun for the youngest readers andlisteners. Gibbons covers the historical aspects and modern customs associated with this holiday. A must for elementary libraries or young children's private collections and a great prelude to craft-making or other Thanksgiving activities.
- You can use this book to introduce Thanksgiving to kids, but I'm sure there must be better ones. Kids need a good story to engage them, but this book reads too much like an encyclopedia entry ("Families and friends gather together for a feast. Many tables are filled with the same foods the Pilgrims and Indians shared.")
The illustrations are colorful, but flat.
Neither of my kids would sit still for this book.

2 comments about First Thanksgiving, The (level 3) (Hello Reader).
- I have a three year old, and this story is just right for her. It is simple enough that it keeps her attention, but it provides details such as why the Pilgrims left England, the harsh winters they had to endure, the different tribes of Native Americans they encountered and became indebted to, and it explains the harvest feast and why the pilgrims were thankful. I recommend this if you want something that gives a simple yet not overly simple explanation of the first Thanksgiving.
- I BOUGHT THIS NOT KNOWING IF MY 4 YEAR OLD AND 2 1/2 YEAR GRANDCHILDREN WOULD SIT THROUGH THE ENTIRE READING. THEY DID AND PAID ATTENTION TO WHAT WAS BEING READ!!! OBVIOUSLY THIS BOOK IS NOT INTENDED FOR CHILDREN THIS SMALL TO READ BY THEMSELVES BUT IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY TO READ TO THEM AND TEACH THEM THE TRUE MEANINGS OF OUR VARIOUS HOLIDAYS AND THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY - THIS STORY OFFERS BOTH. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT FOR THIS AGE GROUP AND OLDER. A HINT - I READ THE STORY ALONG WITH INVOLVING THEM WITH SOME EASY THANKSGIVING CRAFT PROJECTS TO HELP REINFORCE THE STORY LINE.

1 comments about More Snacks!: A Thanksgiving Play (Ready-to-Read. Pre-Level 1).
- For kids in the 3-5 age range who are learning to read. The sentences are very, very simple and are written in speech that rhymes. ("Big ship," said Chip.) No contractions, which is great. Helps with learning sentence structure, and gives a basic story of the trip on the Mayflower. The ants are enticed to board the Mayflower when they spy yummy snacks aboard. They wind up traveling to America where they make new friends and have a feast. A nice cast of characters and a fun read. (review by a homeschooling mom)

- Perfect for anyone struggling with that difficult, clumsy stage between childhood and adolescence. Beautifully illustrated and delicately didactic, a gentle grandmother assures her granddaughter that we all make mistakes. If you like Elizabeth Koda-Callan's "Magic Charm Books," you will love "The Memory Cupboard." A warm tale any time of the year, but especially poignant during the holiday season, I would recommend for read aloud to elementary age children.

5 comments about The Gadget War (Puffin Chapters).
- This book is about a girl named Kelly. Kelly made alot of inventions about 46 inventions, And she is only in the 3rd grade. And if you have a problem Kelly will come up with a gadget to solve it. Then one day this guy named Albert Einstein came in Kelly's class room and that was a problem for Kelly. Albert is a young inventor's camp,And he is going to show the real gadget wiz.
- My 3rd-grade class all got to read this book because it's short and fun. It is on our Accelerated Reader list, and we all loved it!
- This is our first book by this author, but it won't be the last! It tells the story of Kelly, a clever third grader who excels at designing and making gadgets for any purpose. She is regarded highly by her classmates and teacher until a new student joins the class -- a boy who not only designs gadgets himself, but almost instantly gets the class laughing AT Kelly. How their gadget war escalates, and how it's eventually resolved, is handled brilliantly by the author. Duffey not only shows creative problem solving, but she adds a little philosophy, too -- all still accessible to the early reader! With humor and thought, Kelly grows up a little and makes a new friend.
This is fun for students and people who read to students, and the plot revolves around a female protagonist who can still appeal to boy readers.
Highly worthwhile and extremely enjoyable, at 75 pages of large type, this is a great introduction to longer fiction for young readers.
- I ordered this book, asked for overnight shipping because of a deadline (the book was needed for a school report) and only learned the day it was supposed to arrive (afte receiving a confirmation that the book was in stock and would be there on time) that I would not receive it until 5 days later! I called Amazon to cancel and they also cancelled my 90 free shipping trial and refused to reinstate it. It was probably the worst online buying experience I have ever had.
- Genre & Age
Series book. 3rd grade chapter book.
Summary
Kelly Sparks makes points with her classmates because she is the gadget whiz. When a new boy comes to the school, he calls himself the "read" gadget whiz. The two begin a gadget war, each trying to out-do the other. When the pair get into trouble for hitting the principal with an orange, they discover the real reason for rules--not hurting others--and that the "mean" principal has a sense of humor and is a real person.
