  1. The basic ideas, customs, and attitudes of this holiday are introduced to young children with most of the appropriate vocabulary and pronunciation guides. Photographs show a nice cultural variety of Muslims, from Arabic to Indian and Indonesian. The book says that at the end of Ramadan, "Muslims have a three-day celebration." Since that celebration is a major part of the holiday and easy to pronounce (EED), its omission is a significant flaw. Another cause for concern is the photograph accompanying the suggestion that all-day fasting is to difficult for some people. Among all the beautiful variety of Muslims world-wide, the picture of apparently African-American children eating cotton candy implies that they are the ones who cannot "keep a promise" to fast. But even with these flaws, this may be the best introduction currently available.

  1. This is a thoughtful book which presents the month of Ramadan as an important part of the religious practice of Muslims. The language was kid-to-kid, and the photos showed the family and how their religion fit in with their everyday life. I plan on using it in a 4th to 5th grade classroom as a part of a unit studying world religions and celebrations.

  2. I have this book for my kids, and I donated a copy to my son's school. They loved it. It's about real people in the United States and how they celebrate Ramadan and Eid (the holiday that follows). They even have a recipe for traditional cookies! The only problem is that one gets the impression that Muslim children are supposed to fast during Ramadan, and that's not the case - fasting is only required for healthy adults (that's defined as past puberty or when you've stopped growing). Otherwise, it's a beautiful book, with lots of basic information about Islam, as well. Highly recommend!

  3. This book stresses a conservative Muslim viewpoint and tends to overgeneralize Islam. It paints the picture that all Muslim females cover (not true) and that all Muslims pray five times a day (not true). Islam, as a lived religion, is globally diverse and people practice their faith in various ways. I really disliked the preachy tone of this book and the underlying assumption that there is only one "correct" version of Islam.

  1. A little wordy for young kids but a great effort overall. Three fairly long stories, I read them to my daughters at night. By the time I am done, they are usually sleeping.

1 comments about Principles & Practice of Mechanical Engineering: The Most Efficient and Authoritative Review Book for the PE License Exam (2nd Ed).
  1. I purchased the guide to help me study for the PE. This book is divided into several chapters, each covering a different area of mechanical engineering. The chapters were written by various contributing authors. Although some of the chapters were helpful in my studies, overall I was very disappointed with the book. There are numerous errors in the formulas and example problems which can lead to a lot of time wasted on figuring out why your answer does not agree with theirs. For example, a good deal of the text from a chapter on kinematics and dynamics of machinery came from Norton's book Design of Machinery. However, the PE review author did not copy some of the equations correctly. Fortunately, I had both books so I could find the discrepancy with a minimum of wasted time.

Another disappointment was the chapter on control systems. Most of the chapters had several example problems so that you could see how to solve them. However, the control systems had only three problems, two of which were on how to find transfer functions. The information in the chapter was difficult to follow and instead I relied on my undergraduate books.

Also disappointing was that the answers to the problems from each chapter were in a separate book. The author claims that this was done so that you could bring the review book into the exam with you. However, to the best of my knowledge, in every state you are allowed to bring any material that you wish with you to the exam.

A better option for a review book would be Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the Pe Exam : For the Pe Exam by Michael R. Lindeburg. This title is available from Amazon.com.

No mater which book you choose, in the end you need to study pretty hard to pass this exam. Good luck with your studies.

  1. This book contains a lot of good information on Ramamdan for teachers and students. I could read this aloud to older students in elementary school too.

  2. It's a very nice basic book about a religious holiday celebrated by 1.2 billlion people.

  3. This book is an excellent source of information about Ramadan and Muslims fasting. The writing is appropriate for elementary school students, and at the same time has more information that other books on the same subject. It is also important to note that the information is accurate.
