1 comments about Lincoln's Birthday (Best Holiday Books).
- "Lincoln's Birthday" is part of the "Best Holiday Books" series, which tells not only about the life of Abraham Lincoln but also how his birthday became a holiday, which was certainly interesting. Dennis Brindell Fradin sketches out Lincoln's life, including many of the most familiar stories about Honest Abe. The book does not go into detail on the Civil War, but provides a concise explanation that is appropriate for elementary school students. The last chapters not only explain how Lincoln's birthday became a holiday, but provides suggestions for how students can celebrate Lincoln's life in school from learning about Civil War songs like "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" to studying Lincoln in the context of Black History Month. Fradin even refers to a couple of well known movies about Lincoln, "Young Mr. Lincoln" and "Abe Lincoln in Illinois." "Lincoln's Birthday" is illustrated with photographs, paintings, drawings and etchings that provide a nice variety of styles, which should prove useful in inspiring young artists to come up with their own tribute's to the nation's 16th President. However, teachers should be prepared when students learn that once upon a time most states had two holidays in February honoring great Presidents and not just one.

5 comments about The Impossible Patriotism Project.
- I was a story time librarian for 12 years at our local library. Every July, I searched for books I could read to young children that would let them know how wonderful it is to live in America. It is wonderful because we are free. I wanted to read books that would tell the story behind our celebrations of Independence Day and Memorial Day. The Impossible Patriotism Project is that book. This book shows throught text and art the various icons we associate with freedom along with the people who work to keep us free, namely the men and women in our armed forces. Mrs. Skeers and Mr. Hoyt have done a tremendous job conveying the idea of being a patriot to young children. I love it!
- If this one doesn't make tears come to your eyes than your heart must be made of stone.
The beautiful thing about childrens books is that they can play straight to the heart - and this one does. My daughter liked it, but every grown-up who has seen this book has cried or at least teared up. Don't get this one for your kid - get it for you. Moving, wonderful and based on a true story which is just as moving (see back inside flap).
- With all the media attention to what the United States "shouldn't" be doing, it's wonderful to find a children's story that shows what patriotism is and who the real patriots are. Make sure your local library has this book - especially for story hour. It's not just for the 4th of July but all year long. The United States is a free country with freedom of speech because men and women were willing to risk their lives to keep it free and to help those in other countries who can't fight for themselves.
The whole story and the great illustrations make this a "must have" book for any child's book collection - or for their parents' too!
- This is a great book about a great subject. It is well-written with humor and authenticity. It manages to convey a touching message without being preachy or overdone, something few books do well. It is a wonderful book to share with kids and to enjoy yourself. Keep a kleenex on hand. =)
- This is a great book! It addresses an important, yet abstract idea - patriotism - in a way that not only makes it understandable to kids, but enjoyable. Kids will be drawn into the story by relating to the individual students and their project ideas, and will sympathize with Caleb and his lack of inspiration. The text clips along well with many opportunities for chuckles, and the lively illustrations add humorous details kids will enjoy discovering. Beware parents - you may be so busy enjoying the book right along with your child that the tears this book can bring to your eyes may catch you off guard. To be able to laugh and cry in less than 1,000 words - kudos to Ms. Skeers.

2 comments about Presidents' Day (Rookie Read-About Holidays).
- Rookie Readers are great at allowing ESOL students to develop reading skills along with Social Studies and Scientific concepts. I can't get enough of them and use them with all age groups.
- A good addition to introduce young children to what the holiday is all about on their own terms, and reading level.

2 comments about My Weird School #15: Mr. Macky Is Wacky! (My Weird School).
- A.J. hates school and when he grows up, he's going to be President so he can outlaw school for everyone! President's Day is coming up, so the teachers at A.J.'s school want the students to elect a school president and do oral reports about United States presidents. All A.J. wants is the day off from school and maybe a big screen TV! This is a weird school though, so elections and reports are not as boring as they sound-on Crazy Pets Day, a ferret runs for school president against the teachers! Mr. Macky, the wacky reading specialist, dresses up as all of the presidents to help the kids learn quirky facts, like how FDR's mom made him wear a dress until he was five years old or who was the shortest president. This fun story sneaks in other information too, such as how a democracy works and which famous Americans are on our money. The comic illustrations help the reader get an idea of how A.J.'s mind works. Filled with goofy humor, this fifteenth title in the "My Weird School" series will attract the most reluctant reader.
- My seven year old reader and I found this book to contain many negative attitudes and we would not recommend this book. The character makes negative comments about classmates, teachers and grownups freely.
