3 comments about Hannah and the Seven Dresses.
- Along with a delightful story, the reader will find every page a wonder to explore. Collages of fabrics in various textures and designs, with bits and pieces pulled from the sewing basket to accompany them, add enormously to the pleasure of this book. An added treat is the stuffed elephant (not mentioned in the text) that accompanies Hannah throughout the book.
- I was fortunate enough to meet and take a workshop with Ms. Joselyn at the Young Authors Confrence in Montreal in 1998. It was then that I read "Hannah and the Seven Dresses". I found it to be an adorable and lovable story for younger children. I enjoyed it very much even being 12 years old.
- Marthe Jocelyn's "Hannah and the Seven Dresses" has perfectly charming illustrations! Hannah is a young girl who has difficulty figuring out what to wear--mostly because her mother, an accomplished seamstress, has made her so many pretty dresses. Hannah soon figures out how to get dressed each morning without having to dither over her dresses, but when her birthday comes along, the problem presents itself anew. Which of her splendid outfits is most fitting for a birthday party?
The story is not nearly as strong as the illustrations, which are superb. Jocelyn has employed all manner of fabrics, beading, trim, and more to create utterly captivating and colorful illustrations which present each dress with loving care and detail. No wonder Hannah has difficulty choosing--each dress is a marvel!

1 comments about Rambling Raft.
- We checked this book out from the library and liked it so much that now we're purchasing it. It is a charming story about an inflatable raft that falls off a truck; children, ducks, and water creatures play with it before it is restored to its rightful owner. The illustrations of Maryland's Eastern Shore are quite delightful.

2 comments about Fair!.
- It's criminal that Ted Lewin's "Fair!" has only "limited availability." This book perfectly captures the sights, smells, and sounds of a fair. The NEW YORK TIMES named "Fair!" one of the best illustrated books of 1997, and that's right on the money.
Lewin apparently used a fair in Clearfield, Pennsylvania to do his paintings, but truly, this could be a fair anywhere in the United States. We see the roustabouts setting up rides, checking electrical connections, and hoisting enormous, lightbulb-laden ride signs high into the air. Sweat glistens, the sun beats down mercilessly, muscles strain--Lewin captures the physicality of the scene as though he were merely snapping a photograph. We then move on to the 4-H sheds, where youngsters prepare their sheep, cows, pigs, and goats for inspection. The sunlight streams in from outside, lighting the leaves on the trees to a glowing citrus green, and picking up the gleam on the cows' coats. Day moves inexorably into afternoon and then into night, complete with a luminous fireworks display and a walk along the midway. Lewin's painting skill is nothing short of astonishing. These watercolors have all the richness and mood of the fair itself. We are fortunate that he has chosen such a multi-faceted subject with which to bedazzle his readers.
- I grew up in Clearfield, the setting for the fair in this book, so I'll admit my bias. However, to cite another source: I bought this book for my nephew, who is 19 months, and this is currently his favorite book to select from the shelf before being read to. The pictures and storyline (sometimes paraphrased) are compelling even to a little boy under the age of 2.

3 comments about What Daddies Do Best.
- My son loves this book. It is adorable - the words and the pictures alike! We read it over and over, and it is one of the few children's books that I don't mind to hear 20 times in a row. It talks about cute things that parents "do best!" Sweet and charming!
- What a lovely book to read to my baby boy! The drawing is so cute!
- This is a great book with a repeatable pattern for children to follow. My kids love the illustrations as well.
