2 comments about Henry's First-Moon Birthday.
- "Henry's First-Moon Birthday" truly captures a an older sister's enthusiasm in helping her family prepare for her brother's 1-month birthday. Though the customs and the family are very Chinese, the emotions in this book are universal.
- This is a book about a first moon birthday, which is a chinese/ korean celebration of a one month birthday. I am interested in seeing stories about cultures other than my own. However, I found that this book was all over the place. In one sentence they would be talking about a tradition or meal, next sentence a complete 180, talking about a completely different topic. There are a lot of analogies in this book, and unusual sentences. This is probably a really sweet book for those you can relate to it, first hand. I do not know much about Chinese/Korean traditions. Sentence Example from book, about grandma making dinner,"Her fingernails scrape off the warts on the wood fungus." I needed a little more explanation of what that means, and so did my 6 year old. She wondered why they were cooking warts, wood, and fungus for a special occasion dinner. I liked the book's theme. I love to see books that bridge the gap and help understand other cultures and traditions.

1 comments about Thank You, Dr. King!.
- "Thank you, Dr. King" is one of the rare books I like that is spun off from a tv show. It's from the Little Bill series and I think it's the best book out there for Preschoolers dealing with celebrating Dr King day. Racism is hard to talk about with a child. It's not impossible, but hard. The importance of Dr King is especially hard to teach since a lot of what he fought against is gone and young children like concrete things. Basically, this book says that we celebrate Dr King day because he helped make it so everyone can be friends. I am very sad to see the Nick Jr has canceled Little Bill. It was our favorite for a long time and helped me in not only raising a thoughtful child, but it also set the example of why multiculturalism is important and what it's like to be a little kid in a big city!

3 comments about Brian's Bird.
- Brian's Bird is a wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated picture book. Author Patricia Davis tells a simple direct story while creating many opportunities for visual images. Layne Johnson's striking and colorful photo-like pictures jump to life off the page.
This story of a blind boy who delights in his new pet parakeet is ideal for young readers. The book treats Brian's blindness in a positive manner. The scene in which he uses his sense of touch to solve the mystery of his birthday present gives young readers the opportunity to gain understanding of the special skills of a blind person. The description of how the bird's feet feel on Brian's finger is delightful. Brian exhibits patience and persistence in teaching his bird. There is humor in the story, as when Brian hears someone calling his name, only to realize it is the bird. Once again, the author highlights the use of an alternate sense. Brian's brother presents challenges for Brian from the opening pages of the book. Indeed, his brother's actions lead to the bird's flight from the house. The boys work together to solve the problem and sibling teamwork wins the day. The book presents many opportunities for an adult reading this story to a young child to discuss a variety of issues. The book is also appropriate for young readers up to age 8 or 9 to read on their own.
- I purchased this book for my six year old nephew who is blind and a bird lover. This book is incredible! The illustrations are wonderful and the story focuses on family togetherness, not just blindness. It is a wonderful book for siblings with differences, any child really.
- Brian is so excited when his parents buy him a pet bird. Everyone is amazed when he teaches it how to talk. When his pesky big brother leaves the door open though, the bird flies out. While Brian's visual impairment plays a big part in the action of the story, it certainly isn't the focus of this charming book. This book acts as a great way to introduce children to diversity.

4 comments about Witch, Witch (Child's Play Library).
- This book is a beautifully illustrated treat for children 4 and up, with a Halloween theme. It uses a repetitive word pattern so children can participate in the reading. The illustrations are a little scary for very sensitive children or those under 4. It was a big hit in our kindergarten last year!
- Don't be scared off by the "Horn" review. This is a great Halloween book for children 4+ unless they are extremely sensitive. Most kids I know are fascinated by monsters and creepy things, and the illustrations in this book, while scary, are rich and beautiful. Any kid who can handle Roald Dahl will like this book.
- My daughter 4-year old with English as second language, firstly being attracted by the mysterious but beautiful illustration of this book.Once we started the reading we found the story very attractive and non-stopable(fortunately only 30+ pages). After read together with her for triple, she is able to read aloud by herself. She enjoyed this book very much and likes to share with her friends to scare them.
- I have the Spanish version of this book. I bought it before my child was born since i loved the pictures. Thought if I ever have a child this would be a really wild book to share. I just loved the illustrations. The pictures are scarry, but beautifully drawn. Now my child is 4, I showed it to him & he was fascinated...can't wait till my other friends kids are old enough to send a copy. If your child likes scary things, or if you are looking for a book to read on Halloween, this book is excellent. Hand drawn color illustrations, with a repetitive rhyme...

1 comments about The Wedding.
- This book allows the reader to experience all the preparations of a wedding through the eyes of a child. Additionally, we are able to see how Daisy evolves from the excitement of the wedding planning to sadness, once realizing her sister is leaving. The illustrator does an excellent job of capturing her emotions!

2 comments about Humpty Dumpty.
- I am reading this story to all K-2 students in the library at my school. The teachers and the kids love it. The story in rhyme is a hoot. It's got plenty of action and yet is thoughtful and has similarities to the original rhyme. The kids liked comparing this to the original and provoked us into reciting the original as well. The illustrations are also bold, bright and really cute. Humpty has the look of a child rather than a wierd egg person. Daniel Kirk has created an exceptional retelling. I highly recommend this book!
- I've recently been researching children's books to purchase for my K-3 classrooms. Daniel Kirk's books are gorgeous to look at. They must be picked up and read. The colorful illustrations are irresistable. Kirk's story has elements and wording of the original tale, but he puts his own updated unique twist on the classic. The rhyming text rolls off the tongue. This is a good picture book for the K-3 crowd.
