3 comments about A Garden for a Groundhog.
- I am a fan of Ms. Balian's books. This book is especially good for the fact that it gives a story that can be used in preschools and primary grades to teach about ground hog day, but also the telling of the seasons. I love the facial features of the ground hog. Worth reading again and again.
- This is one of my VERY FAVORITE children's books. I love the story and colorful illustrations. My husband and I could be fitting examples of Mr. & Mrs. O'Leary, the couple in this story. It is a wonderful story to explicit the seasons to young children. I read it each year to 1st graders. The groundhog is such a adorable and cunning character...Ms. Balian does a sensational job with every book she writes..I only wish there were more of her books!
- A groundhog lives on the O'Leary farm property. While Mrs. O'Leary knits and cooks, Mr. O'Leary spends the winter deciding what to plant in the garden when Spring comes. The O'Learys watch the groundhog come out of his burrow in February, and he sees his shadow, which means that Winter will last a lot longer. When Spring eventually arrives, the O'Learys plant their garden and put in a side row of zucchini squash specifically for the groundhog, so that he will leave the rest of the vegetables for the humans. Or will he?
Groundhog Day is just a tangent for this quaint story, which is more about life on a small farm. (And even though the owners are O'Learys, they thankfully own no cow.) The focus is on traditional roles and what each person or animal is naturally supposed to do. The text could thereby generate some discussion with young folks about those roles. The accompanying illustrations are clear and concise, and the farm and its residents are depicted in a whimsical manner.

1 comments about Little Critter: Happy Father's Day! (Little Critter).
- This was a great Father's day gift, especially for those who like "Little Critter" books.
A fun book to read with dad, on his day, and for the whole family to enjoy. It has become a favorite and we recall the day when we first read it, and how much we enjoyed it then.
We would recommend it to anyone who enjoys kid books!

3 comments about The Party.
- My three year old and I love this book. Full of color and motion, it is our favorite of her large (and growing) library.
- This is a beautiful book that both children and adults will love. My daughter 6 has brought it again and again from her school library. The story is realistic and one to which children can relate easily, they all love parties especially with chips, deserts and lots of fun, including their grandma. The illustrations details are breathtaking, absolutely wonderful, a true piece of art. Sentences are short and easy to read for your child, but also challenging. We also recommend the French translation. You will want to see more from the same author, just as we did.
- This book is one that I will remember for a very long time. My daughters borrowed it from the library several times until I finally decided to buy it. They absolutely love it. The book enables me to reminisce about my own childhood and the wonderful times with my extended family.

3 comments about Happy Birthday, Cookie Monster! (Step into Reading, Step 1, paper).
- This children's book is aimed at young kids learning to read. It has large type that doesn't overrun the pictures, so young eyes can focus clearly on the words. Simple vocabulary and a fun topic (eaking cake at a birthday party!) makes this a fun book for a preschooler's library.
- liked the book. The best part was when he gave everyone a piece of cake. First, big bird came to Cookie Monsters birthday party and gave him a yellow cake for his present.
- My grandson began enjoying this book when he was 9 months old. He's now 15 months old and needs a new copy, because his copy has been read so many times. He loves to turn the pages while we read the book to him and loves to pretend to read it out loud to himself. Bert, Ernie, Grover, and Big Bird are part of the party-scene. The story line is great and the illustrations hold a toddler's interest.

3 comments about St. Patrick's Day.
- This book gives a thorough, yet simple explanation about St. Patrick's Day. Each page has beautiful illustrations and one to three sentences. It gives a simple 2 page intro, then spends 7 pages about who Saint Patrick was, then 14 pages of all the ways people celebrate/symbols (church, leprechauns, shillelagh, harp, cards, sweets, flowers, plays, meal, parties, and parardes), then two pages on celebrating it in the US, and then 3 pages of legends about Saint Patrick. A great introduction for young children.
- This is a beautifully illustrated, well written, story about the life of St. Patrick and descriptions of how and why we celebrate this holiday. My daughter is very interested in her Irish heritage and read it to her Kindergarten class this year. It was a hit!
- Most or many of the stories like his banishing all of the snakes from Ireland are false. They are the evidence of exaggerated storytelling. Actually he was born in Britain in the fourth century. He was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders and transported to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. He was guided by visions to become a missionary to convert the Irish to Christianity.
Actually, his family were not deeply religious, but most Irish practiced a pagan religion. This was changed due to the activities and beliefs of this saint. Spinning exciting tales to remember history has always been a part of Irish life. I always thought that my mother, Lettie Lane, was Irish. After seeing the PBS special, I am sure of it, though she did not have the lilting dialect, coming from the mountains of Union County. She died when I was seven. Alec was born on March 17. His brother Eric is a 711 child. It is thought that St. Patrick died on this date.
