5 comments about 10 Neat Things About Being a Flower Girl.
  1. I was recently married and was given these books by a friend. I had several children in my ceremony and I wanted to make the day as special for them as it was for me. The faces on my little flower girls lit up when I gave the books to them at the rehearsal dinner. They read and re-read them that night; they would not put them down! The day of the wedding the girls could not wait to perform their duties and I honestly feel that the books helped them understand the significance of the occasion. Even better, they were good as gold and knew exactly what to do. These books are great and were a wonderful way to wholeheartedly include the girls in the ceremony, as well as give them something fun to do at the boring rehearsal dinner!

  2. Was a little disappointed with this book selection. Bought as a little gift for my flower girls and although they were 7,5 and 3, it was really only meant for the 3-yr-old. Nice illustrations...just didn't care for the list of 10 things!

  3. Kids don't have to be preparing for a wedding to appreciate the positive, inspiring words and images of the book. I love the narative which includes things like sports, science and entrepreneurship along with the classic "girl" stuff. I even read the book to my two boys so that they can understand that girls are a lot like them in experiences and aspirations.

  4. The cute title lured me in to buying this book although the price was much higher than the other flower girl books listed on amazon.com. The only other thing I liked about this book was the introductory page. There is a place to write the date of the wedding, bride & groom's name along with the flower girl's name. From that point on the book was a pure disappointment. I had ordered 4 different books on being a flower girl and this one ranks at the bottom of my list! It lacks a good explanation of the role of a flower girl, has no story line, and will not keep my 4.5 year old granddaughter's interest for one minute. I tend to think that if something cost more it will be better...not in this case! Here is a perfect book on being a flower girl with a fun story and explanation on what happens before, during and afer a wedding. If you are looking for a book to help your little flower girl understand her role buy this:
    The Little Flower Girl (Pictureback(R))

  5. There are much better books out there for Flower Girls. As other reviewers have already stated, it's WAY too specific (the narrator has to miss a soccer game), and identical in wording to the Ring Bearer book by the same author. I found little to nothing cute or appealing about the illustrations, too.

4 comments about A Letter to Amy (Picture Puffin).
  1. This is a story of Peter who is having a birthday. He writes a special letter to Amy to invite her to the party. The other guests will be boys so he just asked them. As Peter went out to mail his letter Amy almost saw. He was not nice to her and thought see might not come to his party. The day for the party came and finally Amy arrived. The boys didn't like it because a girl was at the party. I thought this book would be a wonderful story to read in my first grade classroom. I could use it for a mini-lesson on how to write invitations and addressing envelopes. Also, it could be used to promote friendships between boys and girls.

  2. My two year old loves Whistle for Willie, and Goggles, both by Ezra Jack Keats. I brought home _A Letter To Amy_ from the library to let him have a look.

_A Letter To Amy_ is the story of Peter, who has an upcoming birthday. He wants to invite Amy with a letter, because she's a special friend. Peter is worried that the boys at his party won't like Amy because she's a girl. He writes a letter to Amy, and tries to mail it.

This book has the same illustration style as Whistle for Willie... very patchy, abstract, and easy to enjoy. The story is great. I know that older kids love Ezra Jack Keats' picture books-- and I'm telling you my 2 year old does, too!

He calls this book AMY BOOK, and we read it over and over again.

  3. This book in the Ezra Jack Keats series is wonderful. I am relatively new to this author but have fallen for all the books that my 3 year old and I have read so far. It is wonderfully illustrated and the simple text makes it a winner. A great addition to any childs library and a series that merits collecting.

  4. Great book. My almost [...] loves this book along with Peter's Chair. The pictures are beautiful and the story relatable to little ones. We plan on getting more Peter books.

5 comments about Grandma and Me.
  1. She bores easily, but she loves this little book. she has had it for a couple of months, and she's still interested in it. She's 19 months and change now.

  2. My granddaughter loves leafing thru this book with me. Lot of look under the tabs for 'surprises'. Well illustrated. Highly recommend.

  3. This book too came in excellent condition and in record time. Thank you, my children enjoy reading this book over and over.

  4. My 3 year old granddaughter first introduced this book to me while I was at her house for a visit awaiting the birth of her new little sister. My first thought was, "well it's a board book so it'll be too simple for it to be good"... I read it the first night at bedtime, then the second night, then the third night and it continued on for the entire month I was there! LOL....sure we both knew it by heart very quickly and would read it out loud together, but that was half the fun. I'd do funny voices when I read it and sometimes changed a few of the words to kind of mix it up...But she enjoyed it so very much EVERY time. When I got back to the state where I live, I bought my own copy (just because I'm a kid at heart and I wanted to have something tangible of those beautiful reading memories with her.) I was further rewarded one day when she was having a hard time taking her afternoon nap. When my daughter called, I asked if I could talk to my little "Peanut"...I told her to go get her book and I would read it to her and she had to follow along and open all the little flaps. She did of course and she giggled the whole way through as if it were the first time she was hearing it. It was another priceless moment for this grandma...and she didn't have any trouble going down for her nap after that either. It's amazing what will capture a little ones attention. Sometimes we adults make things too complicated. As for me, I love to see things through the eyes of a child.

  5. All of Karen Katz's books are great and this is one of the best ones. Grandma and daughter love to read this book, over and over!!! Just a great book for over 1 children. Pretty durable too! Would recommend for any grandma and grandchild combo!

5 comments about Clifford's Birthday Party (Clifford).
  1. I work with a student who has Autism and he LOVES this book so much that he has picked out his favorite pages and those are the only pages he wants to here. I have also fallen in love with this book after reading it again and again. This is an excellent book for kids. Just ask my student he will the say the same.

    Monique

  2. I think this was a good book for all little kids. It was funny when they showed how they grew up and then how he got all of his presents. Then the ending was good becouse he got to se his family.

  3. What I don't like about this book is the story line. Clifford and Emily Elizabeth don't seem to appreciate the gifts that his friends give him for his birthday.

  4. There is a review below that says that the book shows "how they grew up" - that is inaccurate. The book is about one day, Clifford's birthday, and the party his family has for him.

For parents who worry about the messages in the books their kids read, there is a potentially bothersome message here. Clifford's friends don't bother to show up for the party because they couldn't find gifts good enough for Clifford. If you, like me, just want books to entertain your kids and hook them on reading, Clifford's Birthday Party is worth picking up.

  5. Book is ok - my 21 month old daughter doesnt pick it up as much as her other books. I think its for older kids.

5 comments about Daddy Hugs (Classic Board Books).
  1. My husband and I both love reading this sweet book to our 6-month-old son. It shows different ways a dad shows his love for a baby of indeterminate gender ("finger hugs," "make it better" hugs, etc.)

As with all Karen Katz's books, the illustrations are darling. (The baby and the kitty are especially cute!) It's also very colorful and seems to really hold our son's attention.

  2. I bought this book beccause we already had Mommy Hugs and my daughter loves it. I think it is great because of the colorful pages and of course the boar books are always best with a child my daughters age.

  3. I bought this board book for my granddaughter. The pages are sturdy and the drawings are cute. Simple drawings - simple language for a child.
Not the most fascinating book I've seen for a small child, but it's a good starter book.

  4. I like this book, but having bought it for our 2 year old, I think it's more geared toward younger babies. But, a book is a book, and can be enjoyed for many years to come. Karen Katz is excellent in the books she writes for little ones. Her books are bright, well presented, and fun to read/look at. This board book is also very strong and durable, and will probably withstand lots of drool and bite-marks!

  5. Birthday for my Husband from our Daughter. He loved it and they both loved the time together.
    Good Purchase.

5 comments about The Wednesday Surprise.
  1. This is a great book to read to children while asking them what they think the surprise is. There is a lot of visualization in this book that makes for thoughtful reading, as well as a delightful ending that leads to much discussion. A "requirement" for all libraries at home or school.

  2. Annas dad was working. He is a truk worker. He was going to come in time for his birthday.Anna and her grandma where making a BIG surprise.Do you think dad is going to like the surprise?I wonder what the surprise is going to be? I like this book because it remainds me of a surprise of my own life.I felt so happy when my teacher Miss.Aubry read this book. I recommend this book to everybody that likes surprises.

  3. Do you have a secret? Annie had a really big secret with Grandma who comes on the bus to Annie's home. In the book The Wednesday Surprise, written by Eve Bunting, Grandma cooks hot dogs, eats ice cream, and reads with Annie. Every Wednesday they have fun together. They want to have a birthday party for Annie's dad. First they want to read more books.
I liked this book because Annie read with Grandma. It is funny and sweet. I had fun reading this. The only part that I didn't care for is the length of the book.
The book, I think is a four star rating, because it was good but it was not wonderful.

  4. I am a reading specialist in a middle school with a large population of second language learners and I love reading this book to my reading students. They are always so surprised that the grandmother is learning to read. It shows them that you are never too old to learn!

  5. ! The Wednesday Surprise !

Everything was dark and then all of a sudden

SUPRISE! If you like surprises I suggest you read this

book. This story takes place in a little girl, Anna's house.

The characters are Anna, Grandma, Dad, and Mom. Anna

and her grandma spent a long time on a surprise for

Anna's dad. Everyone helps get ready for dad's surprise

party except Anna's dad. This book is a good book for

people who like surprises and cliff hangers! Donald Carrick

has very colorful paintings to help the reader know what is

going on in the story. The message of this story is when

you work hard you can make things happen! I think this

book is for people from 7-12 years old. So how about you

go snuggle up and plan a surprise for someone!

5 comments about Ask Mr. Bear.
  1. The little boy of this story doesn't know what to give his mother for her birthday and so he consults a number of animals (chicken, sheep, etc.). None of the suggestions suit him until Mr. Bear suggests a precious something no mommie can get enough of from her little boy or girl.

This book was written in 1932 but its message is timeless. If you want a book that reinforces nonmaterial values, one that your child will love and that strengthens parent-child bonds, consider this one. Four generations in our family have met Mr. Bear and the fifth is just about ready to. Five stars, definitely five stars.

  2. I can recall reading this book to my much younger siblings and then to my own 4 children; now I am reading it
to my grandson. I especially like the way the animals help the little boy find a gift for his mother with the perfect
gift not being something material but just a lovely big hug. What a wonderful message to pass on to a child.

  3. I loved this book as a child, now my children love it. It gets them thinking about gifts they can give, and understand that a hug and a kiss for Mom is one of the best presents they can give. I've gotten a lot more of them since reading this book to them.

  4. Wonderful children's classic to add to your child's collection. Heartwarming story about a little boy wanting to buy his mom a birthday gift and along the way he asks all his animal friends. The end is sweet and endearing.

  5. Ask Mr. Bear is a wonderful little classic. I like to read it but more important, my 3 littlest cherubs love to have it read to them. It has a good storyline and the older artwork adds variety. They love the ending -- a big bear hug for mom! It is a favorite at our house with the under 7 year old group.

5 comments about Moonbeams, Dumplings & Dragon Boats: A Treasury of Chinese Holiday Tales, Activities & Recipes.
  1. A nice book full of pictures and stories about the various festivals. There are craft items to make and food to cook. A good idea for those who are trying to incorporate chinese culture into their family life.

  2. The book arrived in a timely manner and in excellent condition as promised. Thank you.

  3. This book is full of activities; stories and recipes--we will be using this book a lot in keeping the some of the traditions of China alive for our adopted daughter.

  4. We are in the long wait for an adopted sister from China and this book has been invaluable for communicating to our son what his soon-to-be sister's culture is like. It is beautifully illustrated and great for teaching him and preparing him for the holidays we will be celebrating. Very informative with great crafts and recipes. The festival introductions are great as well. We have actually made a few of the crafts. The puppet show was a huge hit!

  5. Hardcover edition. My mom bought this book for me after I wouldn't stop raving about it after checking it out of our local library. Chinese culture has always fascinated me and this book gave me an overall idea of the culture. Great recipes of traditional food, a variety of craft projects for kids of all ages, and tales of how the traditions started. It also includes an overview of Chinese holidays such as the Chinese New Year, the Dragonboat Festival, and the Festival of Lights. *Mom's footnote - My daughter was born in the year of the Dragon.

5 comments about On Mother's Lap.
  1. This is a great book if you have a new baby come into the house. My son and I read this book every night and then he reads it back to me. I would recomment this book highly.

  2. This is a very touching book to reassure moms and children that life with a new baby means more love to go around. I have bought it for many friends. Those first months with a new baby are definitely a time of adjustment as the new baby needs so much attention and the older child has to wait (or the older child needs a lot of attention and the baby has to wait!) so this book is a nice, subtle reminder that there is always room on mother's lap. The last page definitely brings tears to the eyes!

  3. We got this book for our 22 month old daughter for Christmas. It is now one of her favorites. I find it quite beautiful as Michael has to learn how to share his mother with his baby sister. It shows how he reacts emotionally and the difficulties involved around sharing, something all children can relate to.

  4. Nice book, not sure if it engages my 2-yr old. Great sentiment though.
...Looking for 'new baby' books geared to very young crowd. Haven't found anything super yet.

  5. First, let me note for those interested in the subject that this book shows babywearing on the cover.

But that's really just a lagniappe in a good book.

Michael is, as you can guess, sitting on his mother's lap, and he keeps getting down and fetching more and more of his special things to be with him. Eventually all this wakes his sister, and his mother goes to sit her on her lap as well, and he makes room and they snuggle together.

The author doesn't patronize kids by carefully spelling out "Michael is jealous of his sister" or anything of that nature. It's too easy to do that. Instead, Michael's feelings are clearly shown by his words ("There isn't room") and the illustrations (him hiding under his blanket is priceless).

I wouldn't suggest giving this to a mother of five who has already started yelling "I WANT MY LAP BACK", after all, the moral is that there's *always* room on mother's lap. But most everybody else is going to love it.

5 comments about Curious George Complete Adventures Deluxe Book and CD Gift Set.
  1. We use books on cd as an alternative to using a dvd player in the car... and these cd's work perfectly for that! The narrator tells you what the picture is on the page where the story starts if you want to follow along with the book (which my kids sometimes do). I like that they have the sound that lets you know when to turn the page (if you choose that track, every other track has the page turn sounds)... some kids' books on cd/tape don't do that and if you have a kid that isn't a reader yet, it makes it harder to follow along without a reader's assistance. These are also great for bedtime... we will read one story, then turn out the lights and the kids can go to sleep to another one (without the page turning sounds).

I wish that all kids collections were available like this one.

  2. Tells when they need to turn the page. My 4 yr old loves it. Him and my 2 yr old love Curious George!

  3. My Grandson loves Crious George and I am always satisfied with my purchases from Amazon.

  4. I bought this set for my 4 year old boy. Little did I know that this would also be a mommy sanity saver gift as well. I gave this to my little boy with a cd player to enjoy. On the first day he opened it, I had forgotten that he was in the house beacause he was so quiet, for a whole hour. And well my little boy is like Curious George, always into something. So for him to be quiet and out of trouble for an hour was a glorious event in my house. He enjoys the book and cd so much that now it's his own little word of reading and enjoying. He even brings it in the car to take with him to enjoy. What an incredible gift this turned out to be. I highly recommend to anyone. I will definitely keep on my list to buy again as Birthday presents in the future. Trust me all your friends with thank you endlessly.

  5. I forgot how long Curious George books are. I remembered them being short when I was a kid. Anyway, my 4 year loves the cartoon and show on PBS so I thought I would give these a try. She really likes these books w/ CD. She can follow along on her own. Audio and Narrators are very good. My 4 year old has a long attention span. Some of these books can be up to 30 minutes. If your child cannot sit still that long, it may not be for you.
