- Christmas is here, but it's different this year. For the first time, Julie and her older sister Tracy will be celebrating Christmas twice: once with their mother and once with their father. The girls are still getting used to their parents' divorce, but it's proving especially hard for Tracy. She initially doesn't want to go to their dad's house - their old house, which now looks and feels empty and strange - and even though she eventually goes along, she ends up leaving early. Shortly thereafter, Julie gets involved in preparations for Chinese New Year with her best friend Ivy and her family.
Happy New Year, Julie is the third book in the Julie line written by Megan McDonald and illustrated by Robert Hunt. Julie Albright is one of the American Girls, books which offer realistic glimpses into America's past through the eyes of young girls. Throughout the series, Julie has grown more optimistic and thoughtful. This book in particular shows how she always finds things to celebrate and appreciate, including her family.

- "Happy New Year" will teach children not only that different cultures around the world celebrate the new year in many different ways, but that they also do it at different times of the year. This book also takes us into the past to learn how the ancient Greeks, Romans and Druids viewed the coming of the new year. Emery Bernhard explains how in ancient times people were not always sure that spring would come again and so there were rituals involved to help appease the gods and spirit. Consequently, this book explains not only how the people of Bali, Ecuador, Japan, Egypt and so on welcome the new year but why they do what they do. We learn why noise-making is important in greeting the new year, why the Burmese pour buckets of water on each other, and why Jewish families eat apples dipped in honey. Children will learn about customs from throughout the world, some of which they would even be able to do in their own classrooms. For example, in Columbia the tradition is to put an egg in a glass of water and watching how it changes to predict what will happen in the coming new year. Sounds like fun, huh? Artist Durga Bernhard provides colorful illustrations for each of the many lands children will visit in reading this informative book. Remember, this book can be useful for any time when people are celebrating their new year and not just at the end of our calendar year.

1 comments about Chinese New Year (Holidays and Celebrations).
- I have quiet a few books on Chinese New Year, but this book is terrific! It is small in size, but packs a punch in information and vividly colored photos. Each page has about 2 sentences, so it is also perfect for new readers. There is a wealth of information in this book and it even has a Words to Know & defination list and also includes 2 other Chinese New Year Books to check out as well as an internet site called FactHound.com which also has some interesting sites. It has Chinese New Year information up to 2007 date wise, but as far as what each Chinese New Year is animal and information wise was updated in 2002. It would be nice it this was up to date, but it does have lots of terrific information!

2 comments about Cecil's New Year's Eve Tail.
- What a wonderful book to share with children during the holidays! There are so few books out there that cover New Year's as a holiday, and Cecil's Tail, is one you'll love to add to your library.
Cecil lives in Manhattan, and is a highly respected citizen. His family was wealthy and well thought of in England. The Queen even knighted his grandfather for his services to the court. But one day, Cecil finds himself an outcast among his peers when he receives an invitation to a New Year's Eve Ball. All the guests are asked to wear their finest things and patent leather dancing shoes. Cecil is beside himself because he doesn't own a pair of patent leather dancing shoes. Why doesn't he just buy a pair? This is easier said than done. You see, Cecil is a Snake!
Cecil's New Year's Eve Tail is the second book in Marie Fritz Perry's career that she has written and illustrated. The illustrations are done in wonderful watercolor, ink, and colored pencil - all of which bring the story to life. Perry's also done a wonderful job wrapping us with her words about the craziness of finding the perfect outfit for a party, wanting to hide from our problems, and reminding us that our friends like us no matter who we are.
Stories for Children Editor, VS Grenier
- Set on the east side of Manhattan, Cecil's New Year's Eve Tail is a children's picturebook following Cecil the wealthy and well-dressed snake. Though Cecil carries himself with impeccable poise, he is distressed that the human world seems to reject him. Just as he is on the verge of giving up, his friends remind him to take part in their holiday celebration - and Cecil learns that fitting in the human world is not as important as being oneself in the company of true friends. A glossary of words that may be unfamiliar to young people rounds out this kindly holiday tale, featuring simple color illustrations of a snake who tries to dress like humans.
