  1. I was impressed with the CD. It is excellent both the story and the music. I was disappointed in the book, however, It is to simplistic for even a four year old. It does not contain any of the Swahili terms for the principles and the drawings are simple outlines. I wish the story on the CD had been shared in tbe book.

    CD - 5 stars
    Book - 1 star

  2. I have been looking for childrens Kwanzaa music to use with my 1st grade class for this years holiday and recently found Happy Happy Kwanzaa.
This is a delightful package that makes it easy for children to understand the values and principles that Kwanzaa teaches. The book has coloring activities, music and a story that are something my children will be able to relate to easily and will, I believe, inspire them to go out and do their own good deeds.

  1. This is a Kwanzaa book I may actually read to my students, but the ultimate Kwanzaa book is still out there somewhere. If I read this book I would emphasize the Kiswahili words and intertwine the idea of learning an African language and how African-Americans try to connect to their African roots. I wonder how my students from African countries will feel about this book? I'll have to see. They currently are intrigued by Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights and the idea of American slavery in the 19th century.

  1. This book is an excellent resource for those learning about this relatively new African American holiday. Middle to upper elementary students (3rd-6th) will find it chock full of clearly written information, including the history, traditions, symbols and activities that make up the Kwanzaa celebration. Teachers can use this book to benefit lower elementary students by using the many superb photographs and paraphrasing the text. Pronunciation is given immediately following difficult words making read-aloud a cinch. The tone is positive and uplifting throughout. This book is on my Christmas wish list.

1 comments about Kwanzaa Fun: Great Things to Make and Do (Holiday Fun).
  1. I have purchased and read quite a few of the children's books that are currently available on the topic of Kwanzaa. Explaining the seven principles of Kwanzaa (Unity, Self Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith)to children under 8 years old is extremely difficult. I have had the opportunity to present an 'age appropriate' program to my children's pre-school and Elementary School every year for the past 4 years, and have always struggled with how to make these principles make sense to these predominantly non-African American groups of youngsters. Kwanzaa Fun by Linda Robertson and Julia Pearson was the answer to my prayers this year! The book gives brief, simple explanations of the principles, excellent 'age appropriate' activities and receipes for a wonderful meal to be served at the Karamu. It is a must for families with young children who plan to celebrate Kwanzaa or just want to introduce the concepts.
