- The Seven Days of Kwanzaa by Angela Shelf Medearis is truly a great resource of Kwanzaa information. It includes easy recipes, ideas and instruction for home made Kwanzaa gifts, background information on the holiday and stories of some inspirational African Americans.
This book is a must-have for Kwanzaa enthusiasts!!
- I have been looking for a good Kwanzaa book but they are hard to find. Most go through the days laboriously or have some cheesy made-up story that no one cares about as filler. This book is great in the way it is written and how it states the purpose of Kwanzaa and the belief behind it. It sends a much better message about Kwanzaa and how it came to be than other books do. I definitely would recommend this book to many of my students especially my students from African countries.
- Unfortunately, Kwanzaa was concocted by an FBI dupe. FACT.
quote, WND,
"It is a fact that Kwanzaa was invented in 1966 by a black radical FBI stooge, Ron Karenga, aka Dr. Maulana Karenga. Karenga was a founder of United Slaves, a violent nationalist rival to the Black Panthers and a dupe of the FBI."
"Kwanzaa was the result of a '60s psychosis grafted onto black community. Liberals have become so mesmerized by multicultural nonsense that they have forgotten the real history of Kwanzaa and United Slaves - the violence, the Marxism, the insanity. Most absurdly, for leftists anyway, is that they have forgotten the FBI's tacit encouragement of this murderous black nationalist cult founded by the father of Kwanzaa."
I seriously encourage you to do some research into the truth about Kwanzaa. Here is a link to get you started.

- This book does nothing but steriotype how 2 white boys pick on a black child. As an African American, I am deeply disappointed that the book does nothing to tell the world about the wonderful holiday of Kwanzaa. How is the world to find out anything about our sacred holiday when you have to wade through 100 pages of "All whites are terrible" steriotypes. In summation, this book was poorly written and does nothing to further the black cause.
- My 8 year old daughter and I read this book over the Kwanzaa holiday (2003) and enjoyed it. It has good vocabulary and the story is okay. It portrays a working class African-American family in a very positive way. We were surprised by the other reader's comment because it never occurred to us that the two bully characters were white. One, Gilbert, may be, the other, Marcus, clearly is not. Both characters are featured in the illustrations. Overall, the book is quite multi-cultural. I agree that the reader will not learn a lot about Kwanzaa but it is a pretty good book.

- This book is an excellent resource for those learning about this relatively new African American holiday. Middle to upper elementary students (3rd-6th) will find it chock full of clearly written information, including the history, traditions, symbols and activities that make up the Kwanzaa celebration. Teachers can use this book to benefit lower elementary students by using the many superb photographs and paraphrasing the text. Pronunciation is given immediately following difficult words making read-aloud a cinch. The tone is positive and uplifting throughout. This book is on my Christmas wish list.

2 comments about Messy Bessey's Holidays (Rookie Readers).
- Short stories with good color illustrations. Pictures are fair - easy to read, with good informantion in the 5 to 8 year old age group. Short 1 character settings around Christmas, Kwanzaa, Chanukah, and New Years. I would recommend this one to K through the 2nd grade levels
- Maybe it's the cookie aspect, but my son (just turned 5) really likes this Rookie Reader book. The story, as you can gather from the title, is about Messy Bessey and the Holidays. It involves making cookies for her friends and neighbors and this time the mess she makes is in the kitchen.
The book touches briefly on the holidays of Chanukah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. To that end, Bessey and her mom make cookies in different shapes which they then share out. An example of text follows.
Menorahs, candles, fruits, and bells
are signs of the holidays.
All over, people celebrated
in many different ways.
Christmas,
Kwanzaa,
and Chanukah,
no matter what the reason,
here's a gift from Bess to you
to celebrate the season.
The book then ends with a recipe for sugar cookies. [My son likes the book so much he makes me read the recipe. Go figure--lol]
Four Stars. Can't beat a Primer that promotes cleaning up after oneself. This Messy Bessey is about the winter time holidays. The vocabulary is rather harder in this book than other Bessey's because of the holiday words themselves and it is listed as 2.3 on the Accelerated Reading scale. Or in other words, this book is suitable for a child reading at the [...]level. Harder words include: community, celebrate, hillside, shepherds, wonderful, and working. 123 different words.

- I bought this book because I'm a fan of Robert Sabuda and his delightful, enchanting Pop-up books. It is exactly that, beautiful book. The text is good for children, the images and pop-ups are for adults as well.
