2 comments about The Miracles of Passover.
- This book offers a straightforward retelling of the Passover story for young children with eager hands. Illustrations are colorful and the "lift-the-flap" element offers delightful visual surprises. A double page spread of the fleeing Jews at night is compelling, and when Moses' staff turns into a snake just to eat the magician's staff, the result is indeed miraculous in composition and humor. However, the story is recalled in a neutral, omniscient voice, which does not give the reader any emotional sense of the dramatic story. After retelling the story of the Exodus from Egypt, Hanft uses the last pages to explain some of the history of Seder and the special foods on the Seder plate. He concludes with the traditional wish, "We wait for the time when Elijah will announce the day of peace for everyone. We end the seder with these words, NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM." For ages 3-6.
- My daughter is 3 1/2 and keeps coming home from school asking me to tell her about Moses. We picked this book from those available at our local bookstore and she seemed to enjoy the story and pictures right from the beginning. I can either tell the story as written or simplify it slightly to make it more age appropriate. I also like that she can grow with it for another year or two, whereas many of the other Passover books were much too simplistic for this age group. The illustrations and flaps are wonderful.

1 comments about Yesterday's Santa and the Chanukah Miracle.
- Our family loved the book! Our children were captivated by the wonderful illustrations that beautifully complimented the text. Hartt-Snowbell's use of humor to address the relevant and significant themes of religious understanding and acceptance is both refreshing and brilliant. Yesterday's Santa and the Chanukah Miracle is not a book that meshes two distinct religions but encourages children of minority religions to take pride in their own faith and religious practices. The enchanting dialogue, multi-dimensional characters, realistic illustrations, and clever plot, make this a wonderful read-aloud book to be enjoyed by the whole family.

3 comments about Where Is the Afikomen?.
- We loved reading this book to my nephew before his first Passover. As he gets older, he'll appreciate the "hunt" of finding the afikomen! A cute story for introducing a child to the traditions of Pesach.
- I bought this charming, 10 page picturebook to give to my one-year old granddaughter at our Passover Seder. However, I enjoyed the colorful illustrations and whimsical humor so much, that I read the book to her before the holidays. And as she saw the little girl in the book looking for "something" under, in, on top of, and next to, familiar objects, she was captivated by the pictures. I am not sure that she understands what an "afikomen" is, but she most certainly likes the book....and recognizes that matzah is something to eat!
- This is a very simple book which is great for very young children. My only complaint would be that it does not explain why children look for the Afikomen, or explain any of the objects it shows (Elijah's cup, the Haggadah, etc.) But this book does interest my 1 year old son. He seems to understand that it is fun and exciting to search for something, and follows the search in the book avidly. I would say that this story is best for the very young, and for older children, you may want a book that is more "in depth" about Pesach.

1 comments about Building Jewish Life: Passover (Building Jewish Life) (Building Jewish Life) (Building Jewish Life).
- We've used this book to help our son (and ourselves) have the feeling of escaping Egypt personally. Reading it before the holiday sets up the story, and reading it during reinforces what you are talking about. It's a great supplement to whatever haggadah you are using.
