5 comments about Audrey Hepburn Collection (Breakfast at Tiffany's / Roman Holiday / Sabrina).
  1. This is a wonderful (and historic) collection of early Hepburn films, including Roman Holiday, her first major U.S. movie. Each DVD contains extra feature interviews and other information concerning the movie, the actors, and discussions of the movie's impact on the American Film Industry. Audrey Hepburn, of course, is a one-of-a-kind talent and beauty. Each is a great love story. Simply put, they don't make movies like these anymore!

  2. Enjoy some great nostalgia, with 3 all time classic movies. Audrey at her most beautiful, lots of class co-stars and great lines.

  3. She is spectacular in all three movies. I recommend getting a great drink and even popcorn and watching them all back to back.

  4. I love classic movies and these three are among my favorites. As Holly Golightly, I cannot imagine anyone else in the role. I think if Marilyn Monroe had been cast, the movie would have been completely different, although still a great flick. As Sabrina, Hepburn's route to sophistication and confidence is beautifully portrayed. And I liked Humphrey Bogart in the role of Linus Larrabee as he played a savvy business man with an agenda. Roman Holiday is a beautiful film with spectacular footage of a beautiful city. Gregory Peck shines in the role of a newpaper reporter who has the story of his life fall into his lap, but does the right thing and declines to take advantage of the princess who just needed a break. Highly recommended!

  5. Had these movies :: Breakfast at Tiffany's / Sabrina / Roman Holiday / Funny Face / Paris When It Sizzles. Each one is great by itself. Great to have and show to our maturing grandkids past 11 years old.

5 comments about A Christmas Wish (aka The Great Rupert).
  1. Based on other reviews I bought this dvd as I love Christmas-Family shows. It was good but I didn't think it was a classic. It was like a long tv episode for me as most of the footage is shot in the little apartment the family lives in. I really didn't like the commentary, Terry Moores comments about her wild life and her "shoulda coulda been top billing" kind of ruined the movie for me.

  2. If you are looking for a movie to watch on Christmas day with your family, in addition to the well known Christmas classics of your collection, I would recommend this unknown movie starring Jimmy Durante. This is a heart warming story of a true Christmas spirit, much similar to Scrooge, involving the family of Mr. Amendola (Jimmy Durante), his wife Mrs. Amendola (Quinie Smith), and their only daughter Rosalinda (Terry Moore.) Jimmy Durante offers a brilliant performance as a faded vaudeville star who rents an apartment just before Christmas holidays during Great depression. With serious financial problem on one hand, on the other, they face the challenges of their penny pinching land lord, Mr. Dingle (Frank Orth) who is interested in collecting the rent money but not fix the apartment. He is a real Scrooge in person! But his wife Mrs. Dingle (Sara Haden) and their only son Peter Dingle (Tom Drake) are very compassionate and caring. One day during the prayer of Mrs. Dingle, she a finds large amount of cash ($100 bills) falling through the big hole on her roof. The family comes to believe that it is cash from heaven, a true Christmas miracle indeed! Actually this money belongs to Dingle who gets a check from his gold mine stock every week, and hides the cash in his attic which is innocently tossed by a squirrel named Rupert. Rupert belongs to the last resident of the apartment, Joe Mahoney (Jimmy Conklin) and The Great Rupert was his vaudeville act. This squirrel returns to the apartment when Joe releases him because he doesn't have a job and no money!

Mr. Amendola uses his suddenly found riches to help the community by starting various businesses and offer employment. Every one in town gets suspicious about his wealth including; local law enforcing authority, IRS, and FBI. In the meantime, when Dingle losses on his investment, the checks stop coming and his luck turns ugly. When his house burns in an accidental fire; he believes that all his hidden stash is lost. Then the kind hearted Amendola steps in to help him rebuild the house. At the same time the authorities find the case of Amendola's wealth is complex to solve and hard to prosecute, and they decide to leave him alone.

Tom Dingle who is in love with Rosalinda does everything to impress her, and to his disappointment she dates a wealthy song promoter named Chick Chandler (Phil Davis), but in reality she is in love with Peter Dingle, a penniless songwriter. The movie pitches the kind hearted souls of Amendola family and Dingle family together to teach the true spirit of Christmas to Mr. Dingle and the law enforcement agencies. The highlight of the movie also includes the special-effects of pioneer George Pal, and the technique of animated puppetry to bring life to the title character a lovable squirrel that rescues a family of vaudeville performers during the Christmas time.

    Christmas Classics:
    1. It's A Wonderful Life (Two-Disc Collector's Set) (B/W & Color)
    2. It's a Wonderful Life (60th Anniversary Edition)
    3. Scrooge (1935)
    4. Scrooge
    5. The Bishop's Wife
    6. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Special Edition)
    7. Home Alone
    8. Home Alone 2 - Lost in New York
    9. Miracle on 34 TH Street
    10. Miracle on 34th Street

  3. Really bad especially in color...save your money, unless you are a really diehard old movie fan. I do mean diehard. Get The Bishop's Wife instead with your money

  4. We enjoyed the interaction between characters in this movie. It is one we can watch with the whole family. The unselfish person has the most in the end.

  5. We have a tame (uncaged) squirrel and a bagpiper in the family so when I saw this dvd in a used bookstore I had to buy it. I put it on today, intending to grab 5 minutes to see how they managed the puppetry. The next thing I knew my entire family was riveted and laughing out loud, so we dropped everything and watched the whole thing. It was much better than I'd have expected. It's a great story, and my son kept saying it was essentially the same tale as a favorite childhood book called The Sqouse about a half squirrel, half mouse.

THe behavior of the squirrel, especially when she (Rupert is actually played by a female) found the money, was dead on, except that she would have feathered her drey (nest) with the bills instead of tossing them away. Leaf sized paper and fabric is a favorite of our squirrel. Today I retrieved a chiffon scarf, a WW2 food ration book ( it was my MIL's) and some jewelry from our squirrel's drey.

We all found the characters interesting and more complex than found in most movies of the era, and even though some of the time their actions made little sense (the author was quite lazy when it came to moving the story along), this didn't detract from the overall film, because the whole premise was a bit goofy to begin with.

When the movie ended each of us named someone we want to share it with, and hours later we're still laughing at some of the antics.

5 comments about Angelina Ballerina - The Show Must Go On (Christmas in Mouseland).
  1. We recently purchased this DVD, it is a very nice story and entertaining! My daughter loved it!

  2. It's Christmastime in Mouseland, and everyone's favorite little ballerina, Angelina, is auditioning for the role of Cinderella in the ballet Cinderella Mouse and the Ugly Whiskers. Angelina is absolutely positive that she will get the coveted role, as she is the best dancer, but when horrible Priscilla Pinkpaws is chosen to play Cinderella, thanks to Angelina's fear of singing in public, and Angelina gets the less-important role of the Wicked Stepmouse, and storms off in a fit of temper, much to Miss Lily's disapproval. But when a toboggan race between Angelina and Priscilla turns bad, she realizes that thanks to her bad additude, the show will be cancelled, and knows that it's her who has to save the day, because, as we all know, the show must go on!

Fans of the ANGELINA BALLERINA book series, written by Katharine Holabird, and illustrated by Helen Craig, will relish in the screen version of the world's favorite little ballerina. Angelina is a fun, spunky character, and her friends, including Alice, and her little cousin, Henry, make the movie much better. While THE SHOW MUST GO ON is a fun holiday/ballet movie for children of all ages, it also teaches a lesson: you don't always get what you want, but you need to make the best of it. Parents will love the great message that THE SHOW MUST GO ON delivers, and children will love the animation, and storyline. A must-have this holiday season.

    Erika Sorocco

  3. My grandson (he is 3) LOVES Angelina. And, unlike most of the squeaky voiced children's videos, the Angelina Ballerina videos are actually adult-friendly. The artwork is lovely, the stories have morals/lessons, and what I like best is the music! It is not only not irritating, but pleasant to listen to. The voices are Judith Densch and her daughter, among others, and very British, but that is fun too. If you like the books, you will LOVE the videos!

  4. It is a very charming and intelligent story with very good production quality. My six year old and three year old Grandaughters love it.

  5. I really love this DVD, even though I haven't seen it before. If I were in ballet class and it was auditioning for a dance production called Cinderella, I would want the starring role of Cinderella instead of playing the Wicked Stepmother or Stepsister. I didn't like the part where horrible Priscilla Pinkpaws is chosen to play Cinderella and Angelina is cast as the Wicked Stepmouse. When Angelina quits the ballet, Mr. Operatski re-casts Miss Lilly as the Wicked Stepmouse. But if the show must go on, I might not care about getting the part of Cinderella at all. When Angelina injures Miss Lilly, Mr. Operatski re-casts Angelina as the Wicked Stepmouse again. I don't know why Mr. Operatski wants Angelina to play the Wicked Stepmouse if she is Miss Lilly's best dancer. I might like getting the part of the Wicked Stepmother or Stepsister.

5 comments about Warner Bros. Classic Holiday Collection (Boys Town / A Christmas Carol 1938 / Christmas in Connecticut).
  1. I loved watching Boy's Town and A Christmas Carol on TV when I was a kid and I wanted to share them with my children. My kids are ages 6, 8 & 10, they loved them too. These are true classics!

  2. I wont go into movie details since other reviewers have written some great reviews on the movie content. I will say that this is a MUST for your Holiday Movie Collection. The 3 movies all add to the excitement of the holiday spirit. My holiday wouldn't be complete, especially without watching the light-hearted and fun "Christmas in Connecticut". Even my husband who is not into these classics caught himself sitting back and watching the film, laughing, while I had it playing.

I like to have these films on in the background also, replacing holiday music, during afternoon decorating, cooking, or even when guests come over.

This is a great investment.... all three movies at a great price. Don't pass it up!

  3. Christmas in Connecticut has a Christmas tree and the movie takes place over Christmas, however beyond that, it is not a Christmas movie. No presents, no caroling, no Bedford Falls type of moments. Boys town is definately not a Christmas movie - not sure how it ended up in this collection. A Christmas carol of course is Christmasy and belongs here. Beyond that, the extras are adequate and the transfer is good.

  4. Warner Bros. Classic Holiday Collection (Boys Town / A Christmas Carol 1938 / Christmas in Connecticut)
I bought this for my husband who loves old films. He loved watching these classics especially 'A Christmas Carol' which, he said 'scared the pants off him' when he was a boy.
We are very pleased with our purchase.

  5. These movies brought back childhood memories that I can share with my child. I was so happy to find an original version of these classics.

  1. Story of a young single mom and her son. She's having a hard time getting over the death of her husband and has been dating a young attorney. She meets another young man who sells her a toy train for use in her job but her son thinks it's for him for Christmas.
The funniest scene occurs when the man who sold her the toy train is accused and arrested for something he did not do. The single mom is asked to come to the police station to clear up the story. Her attorney boyfriend goes with her to help out. The detective asking questions has great dry humor.
It all works out in the end. A fun story.

5 comments about LazyTown - Surprise Santa.
  1. Magnus Scheving, creator of LazyTown, brings yet another exclusive DVD to the stores. This one deals with 2-exclusive episodes never before aired or seen (LazyTown's Surprise Santa; Ziggy's Alien), and also two bonus episodes (Miss Roberta; The Laziest Town) are on the disc as well. With the cast of Stephanie (Mauriello), Sportacus (Scheving), Robbie Rotten (Karl) and the rest of the cast of L.T., they bring more lessons and important info to the children, but also the adults. I love this show, and I hope that it continues to do as well as it is. Being one of the top shows in the world, who wouldn't want to watch.

  2. And I'm quite happy for it.

The title episode, which is also a DVD premiere because it hasn't been shown on Nick Jr. yet, is "LazyTown's Surprise Santa", which is a very good episode. It's fun to watch, and the songs are great. They also remixed Bing Bang and the title theme into a Christmas rendition, which I found quite amusing. However, this episode doesn't have any blatant morals, such as "BRUSH YOUR TEETH" or "DON'T BE GREEDY"; it's more of a subtle "love everyone" kind of thing. I rather enjoy that. And the giant snowball was awesome.

The second episode, also a DVD premiere, is "Ziggy's Alien", which I admit I haven't seen yet. But the song in it, Galaxy, is one of my favorites, which bodes well for the rest of the episode.

The third episode shown, "Miss Roberta", is a very fun episode, and not just because Robbie Rotten crossdresses as an old lady. We get a repeat of "Cooking by the Book" in this episode, as well as a couple verses of "Dancing" if I remember correctly. My hands-down favorite moment in LazyTown is in this episode, a comical exchange between Stingy and Miss Roberta. "Is there a hidden camera somewhere?" Stingy's expressions during this just make it a priceless moment. And of course, the infamous quote train:

    Stephanie: "She's running away!"
    Trixie: "With a book!"
    Stingy: "And a bush!"
    Pixel: "On her head!"

The last episode, "The Laziest Town", is my hands-down least favorite episode. OH MY GOSH THE ENERGY METER IS DOWN TO ZERO AND WE'RE GONNA BE THE LAZIEST TOWN IN THE COUNTRY. Seriously, they move about all the time; and this energy meter thing isn't even based on an average. It's based on a "how-many-citizens-are-moving-at-this-given-moment" type thing. And although they get Bessie moving in an "everyone can help if they try" way, I still end up falling asleep at this episode.

In the summer of 2005, they had this energy summer LazyTown thing where Stephanie, speaking to you through the TV, would use the energy meter to get you up and moving. I think that "The Laziest Town" was created simply to promote this, because it lacks any sort of originality I'm used to in LazyTown.

Other than that one blunder, though, this is a DVD you really don't want to miss. "Ziggy's Alien" and "Miss Roberta" alone make this DVD a must-have.

  3. Surprise Santa is a great DVD featuring four episodes, including one for Christmas. Created by Icelandic aerobic champion and entrepeneur Magnus Scheving (who plays Sportacus), LazyTown is a show promoting healthy living and cooperation.

LazyTown's Surprise Santa - It's Christmas Day in LazyTown! To celebrate, the kids are having a holiday party. But Robbie Rotten believes he didn't get an invitation, and that leaves him feeling extra rotten. So Robbie disguises himself as Santa, with plans to ruin Christmas for everyone via a huge snowball! Robbie Rotten really steals the show in this episode, especially with his hilarious rendition of a song called "Why It's Great to Be Bad". (My husband and I laugh every time we see this episode!)

Ziggy's Alien - Robbie tries to scare the kids with his latest disguise, a space alien. Instead of being afraid, they befriend him and try to return him to his home planet--with Ziggy along for the ride!

Miss Roberta - Stephanie is throwing a party. But the last time she did so, the kids were wild! To avoid a repeat of their poor behavior, "Miss Roberta" offers to teach the kids manners. Something smells rotten here...

The Laziest Town - Accordig to the town's energy meter, the energy in town is down to zero. If things don't change fast, LazyTown will be named the laziest town on earth!

This DVD is 103 minutes long and filled with the characteristic shenanigans of Robbie Rotten, heroism of Sportacus, and crazy adventures of townspeople like the Mayor, Pixel, Ziggy the sugar-holic, Stingy, etc. As always, Sportacus and the show LazyTown encourages healthy eating, exercise, and kindness--and features great up-tempo songs, too!

A very comical, witty DVD that's great for Christmas--or anytime! My husband, 7 year old son, and I love this DVD!

  4. This is the second DVD released with episodes from the popular show "Lazytown", with its leading human characters Sportacus (Magnús Scheving), Stephanie (Julianna Rose Mauriello) and that adorable villain Robbie Rotten (Stefán Karl Stefánsson). A favorite with kids from the USA, UK and homeland Iceland, the popularity can be measured by the fact that "Sportacus" and "Stephanie" costumes have been sold out for months due to heavy demand.

Just ask the rapidly growing young audience about the benefits of sports candy, exercise and healthy habits and you'll begin to understand the positive influence exerted by this over-the-top, energy driven, annoyingly cheerful show.

This DVD has four episodes - the first being the Surprise Santa, where Robby almost gets a heart during the Christmas season; the second involving an alien and a space ship (which scared my four year old at first); the third about having good manners (and how not to walk in high heels), and the last about saving the town from earning the title of "Laziest Town on Earth".

Highly recommended for kids and aerobics fans everywhere.

    Amanda Richards, January 1, 2006

  5. My daughter is 4 years old and loves this show here in the UK. She was desperate for her own DVD to watch so I bought this for her. She absolutely loves it and sings to all the songs. I think it's a great show for kids, even my 9 years old thinks it's great. Their favourite character is Stephanie and mine is Robbie Rotten. It has catchy tunes and even makes me laugh sometimes.

The only strange thing is that the voices are different in the UK. My daughter was watching it and said that the television had gone wrong and that the voices of Ziggy, Trixie, Pixel and Stingy were odd. Same thing happened on The Backyardigans. Not that's it's stopped her from watching it 400 times.

    Go buy it!

5 comments about Walk the Line.
  1. Here we have the rather luscious and dangerous Joaquin Phoenix channeling Johnny Cash in WALK THE LINE. At the literal heart of the movie is Cash's longstanding and long-unrequited love for June Carter (the ever ebullient Reese Witherspoon finally being allowed to put her Nashville accent to good use) and the trials and travails he must suffer before finally settling down with the love of his life. From the foot-stomping power of the very first scene, music is the thread that binds these two restless hearts and what makes the movie even more remarkable is that Phoenix and Witherspoon did all of their own singing!

(Originally published on the website of author Teresa Medeiros at www.teresamedeiros.com)

  2. Being A Johnny Cash fan, I loved this movie...
Joaquin Phoenix really resembles "The Man In Black"

    Reese Witherspoom resembles June Carter
the only question that I have is :Couldn't they( the people at
the movie studio ) have taught them how to sing?

I'm tired of movies in which the stars only lip synch to the sound track( Sweet Dreams is the best example of this fraudulant practice)
Since ,this is a biopic ,I'd Expect Joaquin Pheonix to at least to play the guitar, instead of faking it!!

  3. James Mangold, the director who brought us such flawed but interesting
films as Copland and Girl, Interrupted, has done it again. He has
crafted another flawed but interesting film, Walk The Line, named after
one of Cash's biggest musical hits; this one on the life of Johnny
Cash. Actress Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar for Best Actress for her
portrayal of Cash's wife June Carter Cash, of the famed Carter Family
singers, and while she's solid, competent, the award she won is merely
another way for Hollywood to elevate the bankability of sexy young
starlets- think Marissa Tomei, Mira Sorvino, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia
Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Hilary Swank, Renee Zellwegger, Charlize
Theron, and now Witherspoon. Financially, for the long term of the
industry, this makes sense, so that, even decades from now, films they
appear in can bear the Oscar imprint.

Joaquin Phoenix, who portrays Cash, however, is completely out of his
league as the infamous Man In Black....Cinematographer Phedon
Papamichael adds little to the film. His framing and vistas do little
to enhance texture of the scenes, nor do they add an unconscious poetic
element. Despite globetrotting, Cash's life is portrayed as static and
dull, and the love story is nothing great. What Mangold does not grasp
is that the real reason cash is worthy of a film is because of his
singing and songwriting. When will biopics about artists actually focus
on the art, and not the soap operatic stuff? But, if they are going to
focus on the peripherals, one would think they'd play up the
fascinating stuff, the legendary stuff, not the usual crap all people
go through, for that merely shows that the subject is like the viewer,
when the fascination stems from what the subject has that is NOT like
the average person. In other words, as the saying goes, always print
the legend over the truth. Walk The Line never trots down that alley.

  4. I was always a mild fan of Cash's music, so I wasn't entirely devoted to seeing this movie. I did not see it until obtaining the DVD, and at that moment I fell in love with it.

Honestly, I don't know all that much about the man's life so I am not here to be the historical critic. Even so, I believe that this is more or less factual minus the obligatory artistic license. All I know is that it made for a great, great movie.

Joaquin Phoenix... I don't know how he is in comparison to the Man in Black, but I love him and I thought he did well. He has that stoney gaze and voice, at least. Reese Witherspoon certainly earned her Oscar.

With me, I like a good story, and that is what this movie had. Plenty of heart, intrigue, character, and emotion. Yes, I wept.

I don't think this is just for Cash fans. This is for anyone who loves music and a great story.

  5. this may be a good movie but I paid for my order and never received it. I am disappointed about this. I know it is not the sellers fault; they did ship it; but I never received it . I may try to order it again.

5 comments about Bad Santa (Director's Cut).
  1. I guess if I was my hubby I would have given the movie 5 stars but I just couldn't, probably because it's one we definately have to hide from the kids. But hay it made him happy.

  2. I liked this movie when I'd seen the original, but to have the director's cut and unrated version on one disc is great.

  3. This just goes to prove that artists often are not the best judge of their art, as Terry Zwigoff, in his Director's Cut here, completely RUINS one of the finest comedies I've ever seen, a hilarious antidote for those who hate the holdays, a vulgar comedy with an angry spirit and an ultimately uplifting experience, has been transformed here (hard to believe this was the intended version) into a completely miserable film.
Gone is the voice-over in the opening bar scene; gone are many, many funny scenes; instead of being a 'dark comedy', as Badder Santa is (and likewise Bad Santa, both recommended over this swill), this movie here is simply dark. As in pretty darn depressing. The whole mood of the film is different. It's just not funny.
Even the ending is changed, something far less triumphant.

If you have never seen this movie, first off, it is NOT a "holiday film", as many mistake it for, and thus hate it; rather, it is indeed an antidote, for those of us who say, hate It's A Wonderful Life.

Secondly, if you are a BIG fan of Bad Santa, please DON'T be tempted by this; all you need is Badder Santa, that I would give five stars to easily.

It's a shame this version was ever released.

This DVD is a waste of time and money. Skip it.

  4. Bad Santa is a pretty good movie, but in watching Bad Santa and Badder Santa, I found that Bad Santa is not worth your money. BUY BADDER SANTA!! It is much more funny. This movie is not for kids anyway so you might as well buy the funnier version. :)

  5. Bad Santa (The Unrated Version and Director's Cut) [Blu-ray] (Purchased on 12/26/2007) Great Movie. Was glad to see that the Blu version include both film cuts. I gave it 4 stars for the simple matter of grain. Grain drives me nuts. I want to see a crystal clear movie Directors. They really should give a us two versions one with grain and the other grain free.

  1. Mary-Kate and Ashley are look'n very cool on the cover! I love the background the twins are on. I also like their idea of puting the" Hawaiien Beach Party" first because of the water on the cover. As I mentioned in my title I love the clothes M+K&A are wearing on the cover ( I think the clothes are from the fashin line). The onley reason I gave the video four stars is because I have one episote out of the three.

  2. This dvd is is value for money! as an Australian I am unable to go to the stores to get the parties so these dvd's are heaven sent! I don't find these boring like the other reviewers and I am 20 years old so I guess it depends on what you like. I love watching this dvd and the other parties (school dance & favourite) you can just sit down, sing along with them and be a kid again...which is basically what Ashley & Mary-Kate wanted to acheive with these.
