5 comments about Samantha - An American Girl Holiday.
- I bought this for my God daughters and there friends, and this is one of the best " DECENT" films I have found, Im sure the whole series is just as good...I recommend this for people who care about there kids and what they watch.
- This is a wonderful story that can be shared by the family. Each year I enjoy this movie as I decorate my tree. This year I bought copies for both my sisters. They both have reported tremendously enjoying the story.
- I purchased this DVD after seeing it air on the Hallmark channel right before Christmas! I am a huge fan of timeless classics and 'Samantha' did not disappoint! The costumes during this time period, the entire story line and the adorable actresses will surely leave you with smiles from beginning to end. It's a wonderful family movie, with or without kids; one you'll end up watching for years to come!
- My daughter is an avid American Girl fan. She loves the books and dolls so I treated her to this DVD. I was much more impressed with this DVD than I thought I would be. The setting is beautiful and authentic. The acting is top notch, and the storyline might just leave you crying at times.
Samantha befriends a young girl next door who moves in to be a maid. Since her mother died her father and 3 sisters work in the house of an upper class snob. The poor girl then is sent to an orphanage when her father dies of an illness, and Samantha fights for better care of orphans and eventually her aunt and uncle adopt the three girls. Samantha herself is an orphan, but since she comes from a wealthy family, her grandmother and uncle take care of her.
The story finally culminates on Christmas morning, in a beautiful Norman Rockwell like setting. I cannot imagine a little girl who would not enjoy this movie. If you are a fan of The Little Princess, you will love this movie as well.
- By way of disclosure, I am an American Girls Junkie, as are my wife and daughter. Their books and movies provide an excellent mechanism with which to teach living history to young girls. "Samantha, An American Girl Holiday" is no exception.
For those of you unfamiliar with Samantha, she is a wealthy orphan living in New York in 1904. This movie tells the story of Samantha's developing friendship with Nellie O' Malley, the daughter of an Irish domestic servant. As the film progresses, the viewer enjoys the breakdown of distinctions between social classes, first among the children, then among the adults.
From an historical perspective, it shows the life of the wealthy, their servants and the suffragette movement.
The movie is Pollyannaish, to be sure, but still delightful. Enjoy as you learn!

5 comments about Garfield: Holiday Celebrations (Garfield's Halloween Adventure / Garfield's Thanksgiving / A Garfield Christmas).
- I loved this movie when I was a child. Every year I watch the holiday specials and I look forward to seeing Garfield most of all. Now I have a daughter and she watches the Garfield holiday special any time she wants. And best of all No Commercials. That is the best thing...
- The episodes on the DVD are great, but the DVD will NOT play on my DVD player, which is 5 years old. I have brand new DVDs that play with no problem, and DVDs that are older than the player itself that play just fine. My guess is that something is wrong with this particular DVD. I have never had this problem before.
- This is a great set for kids I remember watching them when I was little, and loved it, so does my daughter! highly recommended.
- Chances are, if you're reading this review, you've probably seen a Garfield special or two in your days. If you were born after the 1980s, though, these might come as a bit of an enigma to you. Sure, we all know Garfield from the comics, but these animated TV specials were created just for the holidays and were aired annually for a while.
I don't want to give away any spoilers in case you haven't seen them yet, so I will be brief and non-descript. The three holidays on this DVD are Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. In each one, the main lesson to learn is the value of friendship and family over personal greed. (Garfield is known to be a glutton, after all). Not only are they heart-warming stories, but they are also quite hilarious! Laughter amongst friends and family is a great way to spend a quality evening in. These cartoons have lasting year-round quality, too, so don't feel the need to only pull out this DVD when the holidays roll around.
Sorry, nothing in the way of special features or bonus material. It is fairly straightforward with no frills at all. All the better, though, for skipping right to the reason why you would add this disc to your collection anyways. A must-own for all Garfield fans and a great treat for young and old alike! (It's one of the few cartoons my father actually enjoyed!)
- I love all these classic's and how great to have them all on one dvd. Great deal also.

5 comments about Hannah and Her Sisters.
- Hannah and Her Sisters is considered by many critics (including Roger Ebert) to be Woody Allen's finest film. (My personal favorite is Manhattan, but Hannah is a close second.) It is a romantic comedy with dramatic undertones that tells the intertwined stories of Hannah (Mia Farrow ) and her two sisters (Barbara Hershey and Dianne Wiest). The film takes place over a one-year period beginning and ending with a Thanksgiving dinner party hosted by Hannah and her accountant husband Elliot (Michael Caine). Elliot, we discover, is having an affair with one of Hannah's sisters, Lee (Hershey). Hannah's ex-husband Mickey (Allen) brings comic relief to the film. He is a neurotic, hypochondriac, television executive in the midst of a full-blown existential crisis, obsessed with death and his unhappiness. Mickey is not much different than the characters Allen plays in Annie Hall and Manhattan. He is involved with Hannah's other sister, Holly (Wiest), who has a fondness for cocaine. Other actors appearing in the ensemble film include Carrie Fisher, Max von Sydow, Julie Kavner, Lewis Black, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Turturro, Tony Roberts, and Sam Waterston. Of all, Allen's character is the most interesting in my opinion.
G. Merritt
- It is impossible to truly describe the plot of this film because there are so many separate but interrelated stories going on at once. The primary story consists of sisters Leigh (Barbara Hershey) and Hannah (Mia Farrow) who share a common bond besides blood; Hannah's husband (Michael Cane) is in love with Leigh. It begins innocently enough with a casual flirtation over common interest and escalates into a full-on affair. There is chaos in the family too. Third sister Holly (Dianne Weist) is a recovering cocaine addict and struggling actress whose problems cause frequent rifts in the family. Finally, Hannah's ex-husband (Woody Allen) is a neurotic hypochondriac who believes he is dying of a brain tumor.
As this is my first exposure to Allen, I was surprised to find myself enjoying his character the most. The media paints a negative portrait of him because of his eccentricities, his praise from film buffs, and his marriage to his adopted daughter. However, this film proves that he is an astute film-maker, and an effective actor. His scene in the movie theater watching The Marx Brothers perform is the most memorable and heartwarming scene in the film.
There are other little surprises for film fans. Hannah and Her Sisters teams mother and daughter actresses Maureen O'Sullivan and Farrow together as mother and daughter. Their scenes are interesting, and O'Sullivan is highly entertaining along fellow classic film star Lloyd Nolan who plays her husband.
- It is OK movie to watch, but it is not the best from Woody Allen.
- I have not seen a lot of Woody Allen movies; he's one of those directors that I really need to research and dive into. I've seen `Match Point' and loved it, and I've see `The Sweet and Lowdown' and thought it was decent, but his classics like `Annie Hall' and `Hannah and her Sisters' had truly gone unseen by my eyes. Then last weekend I decided to look into some of Allen's films and I came across `Hannah and her Sisters'. Now, as a huge fan of Michael Caine, and knowing that he won the Oscar for his performance in this film, I quickly grabbed this DVD and brought it home. To my astonishment, `Hannah and her Sisters' is not just a good movie, it is a phenomenal movie.
Hannah is the most stable and successful of the three sisters focused on in this film. She is married, has a home, a career and children. Her sister Holly is struggling to become an actress and is often borrowing money from Hannah to support her `struggles'. Their youngest sister Lee is living with an ornery artist whom Lee wishes she could build the courage to leave. Holly resents Hannah for her success; resentment that is mostly misplaced and obviously stems from self-loathing. Hannah's husband Elliot has fallen in love with Lee and entertains the idea of an affair but lacks the courage to really do something about it. Hannah's ex-husband Mickey is a hypochondriac who fears he is dying and, in the process of trying to find himself, begins to rekindle a past romance with Holly.
As the lives of this close nit family interconnect and intertwine, `Hannah and her Sisters' becomes deeply rooted in the heart of the audience. This is the type of `dramedy' that works on so many levels. It has the right touch of humor (Woody Allen is hysterical) and it has the right amount of tension (Holly's life in particular is tense and at times uncomfortable), it has the right amount of drama (the whole `Elliot loves Lee, Lee loves Elliot, but what about Hannah' thing is drama with a capital D) but most importantly it has the perfect amount of warmth and tenderness to make for a complete package.
The acting is flawless across the board, but the Academy got it right by singling out Michael Caine and Dianne Wiest for Oscars. As Elliot and Holly respectively, Caine and Wiest bring so much humanity and raw emotion to this film. They are by far the most conflicted characters in the film and in the end they are the most memorable. Woody Allen though should not go by without mention. As Mickey he serves up most of the comedic relief in the film, cutting a lot of tension with his quick witted humor. He's so natural here, so enjoyable. Mia Farrow is soft and tender as Hannah, sympathetic and relatable, and Barbara Hershey is splendid as Lee, the center of Elliot's affections and the audience's attention whenever she's gracing the screen. Maureen O'Sullivan and Lloyd Nolan are flawless as the parents to these three girls, and they share some of the films funniest banter (O'Sullivan in particular is hilariously on-point). Even small supporting roles by the likes of Max von Sydow (flawless actor), Carrie Fisher and Sam Waterston are executed with delicate precision and dedication. Not a single performance feels out of place or forgettable. Each and every actor belongs in their role and commits one-hundred percent.
In the end `Hannah and her Sisters' is a stupendous film. In fact not only did I watch the film once more before it was due back to the video store, but upon returning it I made my way over to `Best Buy' and purchased the film for the DVD library. `Hannah and her Sisters' is a film I consider to be the complete package (I think I already said that once) and it is not a film that will quickly grow old or tiring. If you have yet to see this masterpiece then I urge you to bump this to the top of your `MUST SEE' list. After watching `Hannah and her Sisters' I am sure to put Woody Allen's filmography at the top of my `MUST SEE' list.
- Hannah and Her Sisters is Woody Allen's third best film (Annie Hall and Manhattan are 1 and 2) I liked this film, it is quirky and touching. The best performance goes to Dianne Weist, she is such a natural, she's cute and refreshing in this film. Michael Caine is also good as well, I just wish Mia Farrow wasn't in this, she brings down the film with her sour facial expressions. Lovely romantic comedy for new and old fans of Allen's work.

5 comments about The Homecoming: A Christmas Story.
- I'm going to order the Homecoming when we get back from vacation. I've looked for it every Christmas for the past ten years or more. Its not being shown on television for some reason. Does anybody know why? Too political perhaps?
We loved watching it when it was shown in the 70's.
- This brings back so many found memories of watching the wonderful shows of the Waltons. But this first one is so stronge in family, faith, pulling together and lots of love. I now have all my grandchildern loving it as much as I do. It should be in everyones DVD collection.
- When I was a joungster I always injoyed watching the waltons. The homecoming i can't remember seeing on televison. It was geting use to seeing people in the movie like Patricia Neal instead of Micheal Learned or Ralph Waite. I injoyed it very much I hope others do also. I hope to find others waltons movie on dvd besides the clasical serries like A waltons Easter from 1997 - A Waltons Wedding 1995 - A Waltons Thanksgiving Re-union 1993
- This was a perfect edition to my Christmas movie collection. Great for children also. It brings you back to the true meaning of Christmas without all the materialism.
The story will rewarm your heart to life and keep the true spirit of Christmas going.

Pocket of Pearls: A 30-day pocket workbook to start hearing a softer voice inside of you!
- The holiday season during the start of the Great Depression is looking rather bleak for the Walton family -- there's no money for presents, barely enough food, and worst of all, Daddy isn't home. Although he promised to return from his work in time for the festivities, it's now Christmas Eve and there's no sign of him.
Patricia Neal plays the hard-luck, tough mama Olivia (later replaced in the tv series by gentler Michael Learned), trying to hold together a homefront of seven children and her in-laws singlehandedly. Eldest son John-Boy (Richard Thomas) privately yearns to become a writer -- a dream he guards within his soul, lest it be mocked or discouraged as impractical by his poverty-stricken, trade-embracing parents.
In one memorable scene, the entire family -- and especially little Elizabeth -- learns a valuable lesson about charity when a missionary comes to the mountain bearing holiday "gifts."
While some viewers -- myself included -- aren't as fond of this movie as we might have been otherwise because it doesn't include all of the cast we grew to love during the long-running tv series, "The Homecoming" is indeed a classic, heartwarming holiday movie.

5 comments about Love Actually (Full Screen Edition).
- This is one of those movies that you can watch over & over & feel just as good each time. It has romance, drama, comedy, it all & the actors are top notch.
- "Love, Actually" could have been titled "Love, Almost" with an American director. With new fewer than eight couples vying for attention in this cameo-laden romantic comedy, you need a score card to keep up--and yes, everyone does win, more or less.
We start at the top, brand new Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) just moves in to fall in love with the girl who brings him coffee. Liam Neeson is helping his grade school stepson win the heart of the very young woman he loves. Emma Thompson is on the bittersweet end as she tries to wrap her head around the idea that her husband, Alan Rickman might be cheating with an office girl.
And that's not all...The stories are heartfelt with just enough British irony to keep you laughing instead of falling into a sucrose induced coma. Kudos for producer, Curtis, for giving this story enough spice to keep it real and interesting.
Rebecca Kyle, June 2008
- Love, Actually is a wonderfully-acted, charming film about the nature of love in all its forms. It's less a "love story" than a look at how we humans treat love, value love, fear love, triumph with love, and live with losses due to love.
Sad, happy, funny, poignant, heart-breaking and elating stuff!
- I love love love this movie. And yes, you can watch it over and over again (unless you can't remember where you stuck your copy). The soundtrack is also incredible and I could listen to it over and over again (if only I could remember where I put it). These are some of the best actors and the story lines are lovely and brilliant.
- Wonderfully casted and brilliant comedy. An incredible ensemble of talent seep through every crevice of this production. Hugh Grant is his normally charming and funny self. This is a wonderful holiday movie and gift for everyone!!!

5 comments about The American Girl Movie Collection (Samantha - An American Girl Holiday / Felicity - An American Girl Adventure / Molly - An American Girl on the Home Front).
- My girls love this collection and are watching it nonstop. Thank you for a very smooth transaction and prompt delivery.
- THIS is the right gift for your purchase! Wholesome, great message, provides great opportunity for you to discuss issues of TODAY, even with the movies taking place in previous times! Complete thumbs up from Mom!
- This was an awesome purchase! My eight year old daughter does not want to watch anything other than the American Girl movies now. She especially likes the "Molly movie", as she calls it. I would highly recommend this movie pack!
- I gave the Dvd set as a gift she loves them sits and watches them for hours
- I picked up these movies because I had interest in Shailene Woodley and AnnaSophia Robb.
Samantha - This movie has some decent acting but the main character, played by AnnaSophia Robb, kills it. I can't tell if it's her acting or look... probably a bit of both. Either way, she's not fun to watch.
Felicity - Shailene shines as does everyone else. Easily the best of the films. The movie's weakpoint however is plot... there's not much originality or creativity. The actors do a lot with little but it's still a forgettable time.
Molly - Wow. This movie is bad. The acting ranges from decent to atrocious. I thought the ending was one of the worst I've watched.
All in all it's just not worth it. The movies, for how long they are, try to cover to much ground. Besides Felicity they all suffer from uneven casting.
If you LOVE Shailene Woodley than pick-up Felicity. Otherwise I'd recommend a different use of your time.

5 comments about One Special Night.
- One Special Night
This is a wonderful movie about two people who learn to love again. Katherine Howard is a pediatric cardiologist who lost her husband to cancer a year ago. She is headstrong and wants to do everything herself. Robert Woodward is a father and grandfather who's wife has altzhiemers. He is stubborn and believes women need to be taken care of because they can't do things themselves. The two meet Thanksgiving night at the hospice facility where his wife now lives and where her husband used to. Because of a big storm Robert is unable to get a cab so Katherine offers him a ride home. On the way her car hits a patch of ice and goes off the road. Stranded they manage to find an empty cabin where they find shelter for the night. Throughout the long snowy night the two get to know each other and find that they have more in common than they thought. The movie shows that first impressions aren't always what they seem.
- I've watched "One Special Night" whenever it is shown on TV, which is usually once a year. Very heartwarming, so I decided to buy it so I can enjoy any time. Great Christmas romance DVD.
- This was great the first time years ago on Hallmark and was even better the second time. Great love story
- This is a great movie! Julie Andrews is her charming self and James Garner is as handsome as ever!
- Enjoyable because of Julie Andrew and James Garner two of my favorites. I liked it, but it was disappointing compared to "It Happened One Night" which I do admit was more comedic in emphasis. I do not think the script was up to the romantic potential of these two stars.

5 comments about Elf (Infinifilm Edition).
- I guess I wasn't in the right mood, but I expected this film to be funny, not stupid. My bad for not knowing what a Will Farrel movie meant.
- Most of the "funny" scenes in this film just made me cringe; but I loved the stuff Bob Newheart did. Freakin' hilarious!
- ELF is a warm humorous family Christmas tale. Will Ferrell is hilarious as Buddy who in his own words is a "human raised by elves." That's elves like Santa's employees not the ones that inhabit Tolkien's Middle-earth. Needless to say Buddy has several differences from his adopted family and friends most notably his size which provides quite a few laughs in the first few minutes of the film. The major plot point occurs when Buddy gets to meet his biological father, a stern man played by James Caan, who works as a children's book publisher in New York City. There are misunderstandings at first between the naive Buddy and his city smart dad but a happy ending is in store for father, son and extended elf family.
-
I'm pretty fussy on movies for the kids, but this is a keeper.
Innocent Christmas fun.!
- I collect Christmas movies to only watch during the season and wanted to add this to my collection. My nieces and nephews loved this movie also. Will Ferrel is hilarious in this movie! This is slightly a different twist on the North Pole, but they did it well.

5 comments about Caillou's Holiday Movie.
- My 2 yr. old loves this movie and wants to watch it everyday. I love the Christmas stories from around the world that are told in the movie. Excellent movie.
- I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old grand daughter, she loves this movie.
She loves it so much she wants to watch it all the time. It is a big hit for her and one of her favorites.
-
I don't think Caillou is a good role model for kids he is very disobiedent and bratty. Kids already have don't need extra help with that.
- We watched this probably 50 times in the month prior to Christmas. Caillou is the only show both my daughters 4 and almost 2 will watch. They don't care for the other DVDs as they don't like the puppet and dancing segments. I think they like the relationship between Caillou and Rosie as it is similar to theres. I liked the multicutural flare of this DVD. Extras were of minimal interest.
- This movie is so sweet and refreshing. It's nice to have a movie for children where the children behave like children. I'm very surprised at the reviewer that calls Caillou a "bad role model". I've watched every episode and the movie w/ my little one. I can't imagine a better show for young children. Yes, he makes mistakes, but that's the point. Your child learns that they make mistakes and what to do to make it better. I recommend this to everyone!
