- This DVD is a fabulous version on the traditional "A Christmas Carol." Vanessa Williams makes a strong presence on the screen and plays "scrooge" beautifully. It is a must have for all lovers of Christmas movies.
- Vanessa L. Williams ("Eraser") plays the "Diva," Ebony Scrooge, a superstar singer who is in fact a very nasty lady in her private life. In Christmas she is going to sing a song or two, not for the less fortunate, but for her own purse and her "benefit concert" means another day of work for her entourage she seems exploiting. But on Christmas Eve, ghost of her former singer shows up in her suite, warning that Scrooge will be visited by three ghosts that night.
Modernized version of Charles Dickens classic story, which may look like a mixture of "Christmas Carol" and "Dreamgirls," is fairly enjoyable thanks to its actors. Beautiful Vanessa L. Williams is fun to see as Scrooge. She manages to add some comic touch to her slightly flat character. However, to me her Scrooge sometimes seems a bit too "soft" to be really like "Scrooge" due to her comic acting, which in itself is very good. She may be spoiled, but she is not definitely cold-hearted. And compared with other "Scrooges," she is very young, which means she can start over much easier than original book's Scrooge, whose love, we are painfully aware, left him forever. (Ebony's ex-boyfriend, though living with another woman now, is still by her side.) These factors are not helpful when the film has to make a marked contrast between two Scrooges, before and after the ghosts' visitations.
But I'm not saying this version is not worth watching. Among the scenes of the three ghosts the first one with humorous Ghost of Christmas Past (Kathy Griffin) is the best with the exchange of banter between the two. Vanessa L. Williams also sings songs and "Heartquake" is the most memorable.
"Diva's Christmas Carol" is not the greatest adaptation of the story, but is reasonably amusing enough especially fans of Vanessa L. Williams.
- I received the wrong DVD in the right case. When I notified the seller, they did give a full refund but said they could not find the correct movie.

1 comments about Messiah.
- This is an excellent vintage performance of the Christmas portion of Handel's MESSIAH, conducted by the late, legendary Robert Shaw. Everyone has his/her own preference when it comes to this holiday favorite, but this is mine - partly, I suppose, because I remember when the Shaw recording (remember records?) of the whole work was released in the 1960s, with its refreshing lack of the ponderousness that too often marked MESSIAH interpretations. The soloists (Sylvia McNair, Marietta Simpson, Jon Humphrey, William Stone) are excellent, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra/Chorus is in great form, and Mr. Shaw makes the work shine - and move. Check out the more recent performances by all means, but keep this one in mind as well; I wish it would be re-issued in DVD format.

2 comments about Christmas Past - Vintage Holiday Films.
- If you're an early film buff and/or really enjoy Christmas stuff this is a really sweet addition to your collection. This video has a string of short silent films (produced between 1901 and 1925) on it that are all put to music by Al Kryszak, who does a fair job of having music that enhances a little, but does not intrude on, the storylines of each of the films. They are fairly simple in story and make up ranging from a 5 minute long family Christmas film, to a 29 minute gem on the life of St. Nicholas at the North Pole. I really like this sweet silent bit of Christmas anyway. Not for anyone who wants to be distracted by loud, obnoxious story lines or special effects.
- A Christmas Past is a compilation of rare films from the trove of the late silent film collector Paul Killiam who released many videos of rare silent films that would probably never have seen the light of day otherwise. I have a few of his other films that has his voice as commentary during the shorts. A Christmas Past does not include his commentary but does offer some rare and some very old clips to put one in the holiday spirits. The oldest films I found to be the most interesting. The first one is a glimpse at a family's celebration of Christmas filmed in 1901! Some future stars are also seen on here like Henry B. Walthall of Birth of a Nation fame in the 1909 A Trap for Santa directed by D.W. Griffith. The plot lines are very slow going by today's standards, of course, and the novelty of seeing something so old wears off after the first few minutes. Back in 1906, when motion pictures were still young, just watching people fall out of a horse-drawn cart and women in long dresses chasing after the guys down a hill on the silver screen in A Winter Straw Ride was enough to be great fun. It may produce a few chuckles today. The silent movie buff will appreciate the rare films but, for most, A Christmas Past is a nice novelty or conversation piece to bring out every other Christmas or so but is probably not an awe-inspiring experience, especially for the younger generations of the age when they start saying "So what." Still, anytime a previously unavailable silent is released is a plus in my book and I hope more films from the Killiam and other collections are made available as a historical document on what life was once like (or at least the "idealized" life).

- ....one of tha best Animated, Christmas movie I've ever seen. You will absolutely fall in love with this film...I've seen this movie before while I was shopping at Hollywood Video and decided to get my own copy today...
....anyway...this is an awesome movie...get it...watch it...love it...peace!
- Meh, this movie was kind of stupid. I didn't really care for the characters much either. The yellow singing bird should've been shot down! I hated the songs too. Check out Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer instead! It's always been better! Now to cook this yellow bird! Anyone hungry? MERRY CHRISTMAS YAS FILTHY ANIMAL AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
- After years of silence, Rankin/Bass, the company responsible for such holiday staples as "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer", "Frosty The Snowman", "Year Without A Santa Claus", "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town" and many others, somehow managed to emerge with this terrible clunker. Gone is the Christmas enchantment that overflowed in the specials from their heydey - this depressing 1/2 hour is permeated with scenes from an impovershed ghetto. Instead of cute, charming stop-motion puppet animation, we get very cheap cel animation. I find it hard to believe that the team responsible for all those wonderful holiday classics had very much to do with this one, and I think maybe somehow their name was just tacked on it.
