5 comments about Mr. Hulot's Holiday.
  1. This film is slow, boring and even irritating to watch at times. I just don't get French humor.OK, they think Jerry Lewis is a comic genius; that explains everything.

  2. Oh, the utter charm of this 1953 black and white movie. When people come to stay at our house, I eventually have them watch this movie, and allow no conversational chatter about the grandkids or the weather...one might miss something!! There is a sweet innocence here, some dry humor and a few pokes of fun at things that...need poking.

If only there were more Mr Hulot films!! Does this film have a plot? Not really. Mr Hulot goes to the seaside for holiday and accidentally, and quite hysterically for us, impacts the same group of fellow holiday makers. One of the superb ironies, and there are many, is that Mr Hulot ends up with the most charming girl, and dances with her dressed in a shirt with a huge lobster on it. (His idea of a pirate costume for a costume ball)

Watch for the shark scene, the card players, the funeral wreath...watch this movie.

  3. Having never seen a Tati film in my 40 something years, I was probably expecting too much from this 1950's French comedy. It certainly has its merits. There are some lovely visual gags, which are very clever and funny as well, together with a set of characters who develop with the film.

I found that at 83mins it dragged a bit and whilst the jazzy music theme was great the first time I heard it, after the theme had been repeated about a dozen times it began to get on my nerves. Tati himself was undoubtably a talented visual comedian, and if he had been working 30 years earlier, before the introduction of sound would probably have been a bigger star. If I had seen this film when I was very young I'm sure that it would have made a lasting impression on me (like Laurel & Hardy) and I would have rated it much higher.

As it is, I probably need to see it again to fully appreciate it. Then it may get four stars.

  4. Tastes in comedy must have really changed in the last 50 years. I found most of the humor in this to be very strained. How did this film ever win at Cannes? Must not have been anything better that year.

There are simply too many fabricated events: people almost getting hit by cars, spilling things, bumping into each other, etc. People getting scared by the "shark" was just silly. How could anyone think that looked like a shark?

There were a few convincing slapstick moments that made me laugh. What I liked most about the film, though, is that it brought me back to a time when people HAD to interact with others more than they do today. And it was something special to go on a picnic, or ride a horse, or go to the beach.

  5. Not much dialogue, but you don't need it. Just enjoy the idiosyncrasies of human nature and laugh. Absolutely charming.

5 comments about One Magic Christmas.
  1. As a child, I grew up watching a VCR recorded TV presentation of this film every Christmas. I was thrilled to own the DVD since I no longer have that old recording. I have always loved the message the movie presents about finding the Christmas spirit, and that sometimes it's right in front of you even if you can't see it. It's moral is somewhat like that of "It's a Wonderful Life" however the story is different and takes a few turns that leave you breathless. It was filmed probably in the 80's or early 90's so the quality is a bit less then perfect, but it does not distract from the story whatsoever. I definitely recommend this movie for all families to own as it is my personal favorite.

  2. My brother and sister and I used to watch this movie during Christmas Time when we were young. This year I bought each a dvd (and one for Mom and Dad too!). This is a heart-warming movie for the entire family--it makes me feel like a child again and all the magic of the holiday season comes back to life for me. Hope it does the same for you. Merry Christmas!

  3. I asm very pleased with the DVDI like Christmas movies and hope others will be available that are not available now!

  4. This is a heartwarming tale heralded by the critics when originally released. This is a story of an over-worked Mom in a middle-class family that has lost the spirit of Christmas. An unlikely angel is sent to help her recapture the magic of Christmas. After many years I could no longer find it on television. I was thrilled when I found the DVD on Amazon!

  5. This has always been one of my favorite Christmas movies...a reminder of what is most important - the loved ones in our lives-- and how easy it is to get caught up in the miseries of the world - and forget the Magic.

2 comments about Billy's Holiday.
  1. From Australia a truly unique musical built around an actor who has the amazing gift, for a middle-aged Aussie male, to sing just like Billie Holiday! The story is structured around this gift and plot wise not much but the musical numbers are well staged and his singing carries the light froth of a tale. It's all in good fun and enjoyable. The R-rating is for 2 expletives that are totally unnecessary. Enjoy the music. It's comparable to LITTLE VOICES.

  2. This is another superb Australian comedy that in my opinion is much better than another great Australian comedy"Strictly Ballroom",but that's just my opinion.Anyway, both movies are highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 comments about Peanuts Holiday Collection (A Charlie Brown Christmas/A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving/It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown).
  1. This peanuts video is really really great and funny. This is the comic strip that teaches the 'kid' side of oral adult view points. Join Charlie Brown, (Who hates it when Peanut Butter gets stuck in the roof of your mouth) Lucy, (Her psychiatric help booths are always a scream), Linus, (Who always carries his blanket around), and Sally, (Who doesn't give a flip as to whether or not her subjects in school are correct.)And then there's the goofy black and white beagle, snoopy, and the wacky yellow bird known as Woodstock. Even though we have never seen this peanuts video, I highly recommend the books to Peanuts fans. Or if your a Calvin and Hobbes fan, don't turn it down. Truly a heartwarming, funny, and hilarious strip. The Peanuts Holiday collection definitely gets Kudos from me.

  2. Every kid should have this set. The Halloween and Christmas video are classics, while the Thanksgiving one is a little less dynamic, how do you do much with Thanksgiving? We go from Halloween to Chistmas decorations here no stops in between for Turkeys or Pilgrim hats. I think there are some good lessons in these allfor kids, plus they are still fun to watch even as an adult all these years later. These have a lot more depth than today's sad batch of cartoons.

  3. a must have for all families! you can't go wrong with Charles M. Schulz.
all three holiday movies in one set. very nice!

  4. I got this for my Daughter for Christmas, she is in her early 20's and she watch's it all the time, she loves it.

  5. The Peanuts Holiday Collection is a great collection for anyone who likes the true fun of watching Charlie Brown and his ganag of friends. The three CD's makes sharing them easy and they are all true to the original television version but without commercials. It makes a great gift for people of all ages who like these wonderful holiday classics. Moreover, on each CD you get a bonus episode. Therefore, you get six shows on three discs.

5 comments about The Little Drummer Boy.
  1. The collaborative work of Katherine Davis, Henry Onorati and harry Simeone, "The Little Drummer Boy" is delightful retelling of a classic Christmas story and song wonderfully combined with the glowing, full-color illustrations of Ezra Jack Keats and the iconic music and vocals of John Jennings in superbly produced, flawlessly recorded, six-minute DVD format. A very highly recommended addition to family, school, and community library Christmas DVD collections, "The Little Drummer Boy" is also available from Weston Woods in a Paperback/CD format (NPCD124, $18.95) and a Paperback/Cassette format (NPRA124, $14.95).

  2. When I was a little boy, Christmas time was never complete until I had the opportunity to see "The Little Drummer Boy" on TV. Now that it's out on DVD I don't have to wait to see it on TV. That's right, I still consider it a pinnacle of my Christmas traditions. It's a beautiful, but sad story about a little boy who loses his parents in a house fire deliberately set by some roaving thieves. He, along with his camel and sheep, teams up with a wondering junk dealer and low and behold winds up being at the stable in Bethlehem on the night of The Savior's birth. Since he lost everything he owned in the house fire, he decides as a gift for the new born King he would play his drum. Again, this is a beautiful story that leaves me in tears each time I watch it.

  3. This is a fairly short Christmas special but it was made in the old days when a half hour on TV contained only four minutes of commercials. The best part about The Little Drummer Boy is its wholesome simplicity. The fact that it is so unabashedly religious is its strongest point in my opinion. Chasing the hate out of your heart and replacing it with love is a valuable lesson for all children, so I agree with another reviewer about its being a timeless family classic. It begins rather slowly but the last five minutes are absolutely outstanding and worth scanning back to watch a second time. The quotations from scripture give it its oomph but this also means that it would never be televised today on any of the big three networks. This might be a good DVD to buy because you probably won't catch it for free.

  4. The movie is as good as I remember from my childhood but unfortunately the quality of the reproduction is very poor. My mother-in-law happens to have a copy of it on VHS that must have been made before the producers lost the 35mm original, because her VHS reproduction is much clearer than what's on my DVD. It's a real pity the 35mm was lost because it makes a big difference to watch it with the original quality. I imagine if someone redid the story from scratch it would be saccharine and puerile just like all the christmas movies made these days.

Anyway, as far as I can tell from searching for this item on other sites, this DVD is as good a copy as anyone is going to be able to find.

  5. Probably the only true spiritual Christmas movie. Excellent story line and thought provking meaning of Christmas. Hope that it is some day remastered.

1 comments about The Littlest Angel.
  1. (Review refers to Brentwood 2005 edition-Slipcase says "2004", but disc is stamped "2005") This one is a must! I've seen several VHS editions of the Johnny Whitaker 1969 classic, but the DVD blows them away. I remember seeing this on the "Hallmark Hall Of Fame" several times, and it still wonderful. Now, the opening scene has always been problematic-it has always looked slightly milky because it was shot on film and transferred to 2-inch videotape. But once we get to heaven,(and studio shooting) everything is tack-sharp and looks great-it just won't look better than this. By all means, grab this!
