5 comments about Christmastime in Vienna.
- Picked up this DVD by accident - just wanted some Christmas music and got pure heaven. Domingo shone but Kaas and Fernandez were unbelievable. The blending of Kaas and Fernandez on Here is Christmas transports you to new emotional heights and Alejandro's rendition of A Little Drummer Boy showcases a wonderful voice. It is the Christmas CD or DVD to own and share with ALL your friends and neighbors. I couldn't wait to find out more about Fernandez and Kaas and hope they do something together again. Spectacular album and video
- Unfortunatly someone only got half of this concert for me and put it away for 2 year, eventually it was put on my mouth fell open as i first clapped eyes on alejandro, it was march my neighbours must of thought id gone mad i am used to bing crosby singing white christmas but my GOODness me i nearly hit the floor when i saw the snow scene so beautiful along with his voice and his face it was simply heavenly the fact that he made a mistake only made him more endearing than he already is on the it must be christmas song i was suprised to hear the reggae tempo in the background my toes curled everytime he sings the word carpenter if i was ever lucky enough to see him live i would have to have handcuffs for his safety and the silent night has always been a favourite of mine i'm not a Elvis fan but i think he sounds a little like elvis. i cannot expres what i feel about this gorgious man, he sings like an angel i could only show you by putting this video on and hoping you could feel what i feel!i simply had to send off for it to see the rest. unbelievable but true my video just decided to die the day before i bought it..... help! im in torture! what have i done to derserve this!
- I'm a huge film buff, but if I could only have one video, this would be the one I'd choose. Recorded live in December of 1998, it's what Christmas is all about. There's a peace I feel when I play this. It puts a smile on my face and in my heart.
Plácido Domingo ! Such warmth and goodness flows from this man, and with his magnificent voice and elegance, he's one of the all-time greats. Alejandro Fernández is beyond description. What a gift from God to the world this man is ! The voice, the soul, the beauty, the grace. You have to hear and see this to believe it. The stunning Patricia Kaas, with her sultry unique style, is wonderful, and she has a strong enough presence to hold her own between these two extraordinary men. The children's chorus is exquisite, the orchestra, conducted by Steven Mercurio, is superb, and the editing terrific. There are so many wonderful songs..."Blanca Navidad" ("White Christmas") is a blessing captured on video, and is truly "Un mensaje de amor y de paz". I love "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Hay que Sembrar en Navidad" with its beautiful, moving lyrics, and the glorious "Silent Night" finale...and so much more. There aren't enough stars to give this video, or words to recommend it. Just buy it and let it lift your spirit and fill your heart with joy any day of the year.
- I am probably Alejandro Fernández' most fervent "gringo" fan. I own all his CDs and videos, including everything I can find on television, amazon, half, ebay, and download. I get chills everytime I watch this. After all these years, I am always amazed at the pure perfection that floats out of his mouth, and to hear him sing in English is a thrill. I love Plácido Domingo's unrivalled voice, and although I am not particularly fond of Patricia Kaas' style of singing, she shines as well. I start watching this video on December 1st every year since it came out. This year on big screen HDTV it is more incredible than ever. I would watch it year around if my family would allow it. Wow, THIS is Christmas! I thought I would buy a copy for a friend (paid 12.99 for mine) but had no idea that it had become such a collector's item. Now if it was for me, and I had lost mine, price would have been no object. You just can't have too much of a good thing!

5 comments about Walk the Line.
- Here we have the rather luscious and dangerous Joaquin Phoenix channeling Johnny Cash in WALK THE LINE. At the literal heart of the movie is Cash's longstanding and long-unrequited love for June Carter (the ever ebullient Reese Witherspoon finally being allowed to put her Nashville accent to good use) and the trials and travails he must suffer before finally settling down with the love of his life. From the foot-stomping power of the very first scene, music is the thread that binds these two restless hearts and what makes the movie even more remarkable is that Phoenix and Witherspoon did all of their own singing!
(Originally published on the website of author Teresa Medeiros at www.teresamedeiros.com)
- Being A Johnny Cash fan, I loved this movie...
Joaquin Phoenix really resembles "The Man In Black"
Reese Witherspoom resembles June Carter
the only question that I have is :Couldn't they( the people at
the movie studio ) have taught them how to sing?
I'm tired of movies in which the stars only lip synch to the sound track( Sweet Dreams is the best example of this fraudulant practice)
Since ,this is a biopic ,I'd Expect Joaquin Pheonix to at least to play the guitar, instead of faking it!!
- James Mangold, the director who brought us such flawed but interesting
films as Copland and Girl, Interrupted, has done it again. He has
crafted another flawed but interesting film, Walk The Line, named after
one of Cash's biggest musical hits; this one on the life of Johnny
Cash. Actress Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar for Best Actress for her
portrayal of Cash's wife June Carter Cash, of the famed Carter Family
singers, and while she's solid, competent, the award she won is merely
another way for Hollywood to elevate the bankability of sexy young
starlets- think Marissa Tomei, Mira Sorvino, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia
Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Hilary Swank, Renee Zellwegger, Charlize
Theron, and now Witherspoon. Financially, for the long term of the
industry, this makes sense, so that, even decades from now, films they
appear in can bear the Oscar imprint.
Joaquin Phoenix, who portrays Cash, however, is completely out of his
league as the infamous Man In Black....Cinematographer Phedon
Papamichael adds little to the film. His framing and vistas do little
to enhance texture of the scenes, nor do they add an unconscious poetic
element. Despite globetrotting, Cash's life is portrayed as static and
dull, and the love story is nothing great. What Mangold does not grasp
is that the real reason cash is worthy of a film is because of his
singing and songwriting. When will biopics about artists actually focus
on the art, and not the soap operatic stuff? But, if they are going to
focus on the peripherals, one would think they'd play up the
fascinating stuff, the legendary stuff, not the usual crap all people
go through, for that merely shows that the subject is like the viewer,
when the fascination stems from what the subject has that is NOT like
the average person. In other words, as the saying goes, always print
the legend over the truth. Walk The Line never trots down that alley.
- I was always a mild fan of Cash's music, so I wasn't entirely devoted to seeing this movie. I did not see it until obtaining the DVD, and at that moment I fell in love with it.
Honestly, I don't know all that much about the man's life so I am not here to be the historical critic. Even so, I believe that this is more or less factual minus the obligatory artistic license. All I know is that it made for a great, great movie.
Joaquin Phoenix... I don't know how he is in comparison to the Man in Black, but I love him and I thought he did well. He has that stoney gaze and voice, at least. Reese Witherspoon certainly earned her Oscar.
With me, I like a good story, and that is what this movie had. Plenty of heart, intrigue, character, and emotion. Yes, I wept.
I don't think this is just for Cash fans. This is for anyone who loves music and a great story.
- this may be a good movie but I paid for my order and never received it. I am disappointed about this. I know it is not the sellers fault; they did ship it; but I never received it . I may try to order it again.

1 comments about Billie Holiday - The Life and Artistry of Lady Day.
- I have tried to order this item from Amazon, despite the lack of details given in the ad, for almost three months. I give up.
I ordered it in early December, 2005 and was first told it would ship "within 8 weeks". When I finally received it, in late January, 2006, I found that they had shipped me the wrong item, "The Genius of Lady Day: Billie Holiday" which I already own. I returned the erroneous item to Amazon, and requested a replacement. On February 4, 2006 I received the replacement - another copy of "The Genius of Lady Day: Billie Holiday". When I requested another replacement, I was told there was "a problem with the item" and my money would be refunded.
I don't think the item actually exists. Hence one star.
Should I manage to obtain it at a future date (from Amazon or anywhere else) I will delete this review and post a new one...
Update: December 28, 2006: Having looked at this ad each time I did a search on Billie Holiday all through 2006 and seeing that it is still listed as, "in stock", I decided to see if I could get it. I wrote an e-mail to Amazon, and explained that I was still interested in it. I told them of the problem I'd had last year, and explained carefully that I'd be happy to purchase it, IF I could be guaranteed that I would receive the correct item. I asked if there was some way that customer service could procure it in advance, and verify the purchase before they ship it, as I did not want to have to return "The Genius of Lady Day: Billie Holiday" for the third time. I already own that DVD, and want to purchase "Billie Holiday - The Life and Artistry of Lady Day".
I received a one-sentence reply, which said, "The item is now available". So I ordered it.
Two weeks later, I received the wrong item, again. For the third time.
After going ballistic on customer service, yesterday I received an e-mail which read, in part, "I did ...research ...and learned that we have never carried "Billie Holiday - The Life and Artistry of Lady Day" in our inventory. I found that the problem was with an incorrect bar code supplied by the vendor. I've notified the appropriate department of this and requested that the item be removed from our website.
I'm sorry it's taken so long for this issue to be resolved, and regret that we don't carry the title you're actually looking for.
Please keep the copy of "Genius of Lady Day ~ Billie Holiday" you received as a free gift."
At least Amazon did the correct thing by not making me return the third incorrect item. However, if the ad you are looking at for "Billie Holiday - The Life and Artistry of Lady Day" says, "In Stock", don't believe it. Amazon does NOT carry this item.
