  1. I may be one of the few people in the world who really doesn't like "The Honeymooners." The tiresome lines, the weak plots and the stab at acting do nothing to make this show appealing. One major flaw with "The Honeymooners" is that the show is so darn BORING! You can predict the story and outcome right away.

The tiresome lines and stilted phrases are bad enough, but the dreaded "homminas" are extremely annoying. Add to this mix Alice the big mouth, Ralphie Boy the cliche spouting windbag, Norton the Irritant and Dishrag Trixie. Fat jokes and chauvinism are abound in any "Honeymooners" collection and this is no exception.

  1. I've been waiting for this DVD to show up for a long time. This is the very best Christmas' Special ever. Several Opera Stars like Placido Domingo, Mirella Freni, Luciano Pavarotti, Jose Carreras and many others, all at their prime, take us to a magical trip around the world in classical winter scenes. The artists themselves are the very best in the operatic field, the kind one wouldn't expect to see reunited in the same DVD. Unlike other Christmas Specials, usually confined to a single location, this one travels with you to different times and places. It's first rate entertainment and a collector's item to cherish!

  2. The video quality on this one really stinks

It.would not be acceptable in a home move. The lip sinc is often way off.

You may like the stars and audio, but the video is not worth of VHS to say nothing of DVD

The original is very old maybe before 1980.

For reference, I just love Merry Christmas from Vienna with Domingo

  3. Opera stars sing Christmas Carols of several nations. The editing and transfer to DVD were done in an unbelievably slovenly manner. The beginnings and endings of numbers are cut off and several numbers are afflicted with audio distortion, especially the "Misericordia" (sung by Jose Carreras) which is unlistenable. These flaws are particularly lamentable since the program itself is very attractive musically and visually. The singers were mostly in prime condition at the time of recording (which, from their apparent ages, I would guess to be 20 or more years ago). I bought this item after seeing the program on TV (Bravo); the telecast sounded far better than the DVD. The singers featured are Kurt Rydl, Hermann Prey, Peter Dvorsky, Edda Moser, Edita Gruberova, Placido Domingo, Peter Hoffmann, Katia Ricciarelli, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Mirella Freni, Jose Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, and The Vienna Boys Choir. This DVD is branded "D3K Films." Judging by their vandalism of this release, I would suggest that you avoid their products.

  4. This is a warm and fuzzy Christmas show...what Christmas is supposed to make you feel. The songs are great and the beautiful snow covered mountains and story by Tony Randall are beautiful! This is worth buying at any price...Treat yourself!

  5. This show is like Christmas...it has warmth and feeling to it. I saw it on BRAVO and decided it was worth purchasing...I was right. It gives you a good feeling and that is what Christmas should do. The snow and the commentary make the feeling that much more vibrant. Treat your self!

  1. I am sixteen years old and I still remember half the words to Jingle Bells from when I was in second grade, so I decided to buy this video. It came as a shock to me that it is no longer available. It was a masterpiece. Bring it back!

  2. If the picture is accurate, this is NOT the Jason Alexander narrated Christmas Classic "Jingle Bells". The three Christmas Classic animated stories are all quite nice. This is an astonishingly cheaply animated video. It's awful. The characters rock back and forth using the same two animated cells. The story is awful. One of the worst Christmas videos of all time!!

OKAY: Amazon continues to confuse the two. The DVD is what it claims to be. The three specials on the DVD are really well-done charming Christmas stories. Nell Carter is a gem as Mrs. Claus. Just Don't buy the wrong VHS Jingle Bells.

5 comments about Bob Hope: Paris Holiday.
  1. I have been wanting to see this film for years, because I'm a fan of Hope's early films and the ones with Crosby, and this one has the reputation of being better than the losers he began to crank out in the '50s and '60s; because Gerd Oswald directed the superb (long unavailable because of the dreadful remake) A Kiss Before Dying; and because Preston Sturges appears in it as an actor. I should have known when I saw the low price tag and the unknown logo (Brentwood) that this would be a bargain basement ripoff. To begin with, it's pan and scan; just the credits are letterboxed--then you apruptly switch to seeing only a third of the Cinemascope image. The print itself in not good, a lot worse than a decent VHS tape, with drifting colors. As for the movie, I lasted midway; the jokes are definitely late Hope, smirky and obvious, and the action is slowed considerably by the fact that Hope plays opposite Fernandel, who speaks only French--you have to wait while another character translates what he says or watch him looking confused. Still, is the movie really as deadly as it seems? I'm not sure. Oswald proved in his others pictures that he knew how to fill a Cinemascope screen and it's possible that that in the correct aspect-ratio this picture as some style; the letterboxed pre-credit sequence is certainly more watchable than what follows. What's really troubling is that this same company is putting out a bunch of Hope's films, including some of his best (ie The Seven Little Foys). Are all the DVDs in the series as lousy as this? Has anyone made the mistake I made with this one, of actually buying one? Let's hear from you.

  2. Ha! People are allowed their own opinion i guess. I, personally, loved Paris Holiday. My 3rd year French class watched it today, and it was perfect. There was just enough French in it to make it extreamly interresting... Plus, the really cheezy story line and special effects really made it worth while.. It's just one of those old crummy flicks that you grow to love.. the bad guys after the good guys... the good guys winning it all in the end.... only to find out that they may not really have won.. Plus all the pretty girls. It's a great movie, if you like the type!!!! :D

  3. Overall, I thought "Paris Holiday" was a very funny movie. It was the first film I'd seen with Bob Hope, and i was very pleased. I could not stop laughing during that ridiculously cheesy helicopter scene!
However, one of the main reasons I got the movie was because I thought Anita Ekberg, of whom I am a big fan, was a main character. She was one of the stars to get top billing, so naturally, I thought she would be in the film quite a bit. This was not the case. Her character is important to the story line, but she is not shown much, which was a little disappointing.
Overall, the movie was very good, VERY funny, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for an Anita Ekberg movie.

  4. Bob Hope (1903-2003) co-starred with Famous French Comedian: Fernandel (1902-1971) in Paris holiday . Hope plays Robert Hunter , an actor traveling to Paris to purchase a screenplay , only to find himself mixed up counterfeits . While Hunter has his eye on diplomat Ann McCall (Marta Hyer 1924- ) , a sexy spy named Zara (The luscious Anita Ekberg 1931 - Miss Sweden 1950) has an eye on the screenplay . Hope produced the film penned the original story . The movie are produced on place in paris , Superb and Razor sharp transfer , so dont be afraind to buy this movie! . Higly Recommended

  5. I love Bob Hope movies, but this has to be the worst I ever saw. Maybe Bob was just getting old and slowing down by 1958. This movie has a very slow, confusing, disjointed plot, dreary locations, the action drags, the lighting, camera work, and microphone placement all seemed second-rate, and the only funny thing happens at the very last when Bob Hope dangles for a while from a rope ladder attached to a Korean War-era helicopter, which provides some sight gags. The actors all seemed distracted throughout, and I got bored watching them. I kept wishing it would end. In fact, I got so depressed by it all I was about to abandon it until the helicopter took off. If I were the director of this movie, I would have demanded some energy and focus from these actors. Editing has a lot to do with the finished product, of course, and in my opinion about a third of this movie should have ended up on the cutting room floor, to at least speed things up. No joy for me in this movie. If you get this movie, go straight to the helicopter scene at the end--the rest of it is not worth sitting through.

5 comments about International Tournee of Animation 2.
  1. Now, I'll be the first to admit that Bill Plympton's style of animation is crude at best, but what he does is use a unique blend of style with images to create the most surreal animation ever! This series of shorts is probably the best of his work from all the collections I have seen. I can easily understand not being able to sit through his animation for more than an hour straight, but each short on it's own has a great charm and an unique vision. Your Face, When Push Comes to Shove, and One Of Those Days will make you laugh, then cringe at what you're laughing at, then laugh again!

  2. There's a pretty good chance most all of us have seen Bill Plympton's unique style of work at some point or other. Whether it magazines, film, or television, he has been around for a long time and garnered the respect of many of his peers.

In this collection, we get to see some of his earliest work, dating back to 1968 and we follow his work up until about 1991. I think my favorite short on here is the one titled '25 Ways to Quit Smoking'. The use of the sumo had me laughing for quite a while.

His drawings, sometimes crude, are full of kinetic energy, always flowing along, morphing into something new and wondrous. The imagination displayed in these early works is pure, simple, and a lot of fun to watch. His humor, to me, is comparable to Gary Larson in that he takes everyday situations and shows the inherent humor in them, things most of us would probably overlook.

There is quite a bit of material on this disc, from award winning shorts, promotional spots, commercial work, and even a music video. Also, there are loads of extras including interviews, commentaries on the shorts, exclusive featurettes, rare early footage and much more.

There is some material on here, especially in the extras section, that is not suitable for younger audiences. These may be cartoons, but not in the traditional sense, and certainly for the more discerning viewer. There is another disc out called Plymptoons: The Complete Works of Bill Plympton but I have not seen that yet. A lot of the material listed being in there seems to be in this collection, so you may want to review both before buying one or the other. I didn't know the other existed before purchasing this one. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, there is also a nifty little fold out poster along with an extensive listing of his work from his beginnings up until about 2001.

  3. Don't waste your money. There are 19 shorts:
-Four of them are just commercials and who wants to pay money to watch commercilas? They're not even good commercials.
-One is a stick drawing from 1968 that is just a guy buying a package from a man a copuple of times
-Another one of them is 15 seconds long that shows the MTV logo
-Two of them are unfinished and are pointless
-And all of them are boring.
If you were in a highschool art class you might say "wow that was pretty good," but other than that it is a waste of time.

  4. If there is any confusion between this DVD and 'The Complete Works of Bill Plympton', relax, this is very nearly the same DVD.

The "Classic Works" differs from "Complete Works" in that it is a more complete version than the previous VHS and DVD editions of "Plymptoons". The director's commentary, which was badly needed in the first transfer to DVD, finally makes an appearance in this version. Bill's commentary is the reading of some notes at the beginning of each short, some technical, some biographical, all interesting in spite of the monotone in which it is delivered. But, hey, Bill never claimed to be an actor. This version also has a few more 'extras' in the form of a stills gallery. The gallery has some key frames, as well as concepts passed over from "25 Way to Quit Smoking". Also, at the end of "Plymptoons 1990" there is a little extra film footage. There are also a few additional shorts in the 'Rarities' section.

This version is also more NC-17 than the older releases, which are more PG. NOTHING Bill does should ever be called PC, so please don't expect moments of happy smiley crap to come floating out of the screen. The interviews are frank, with some colorful language and explicit footage of some of his later works. For those wishing to encourage the younger animator, the "Complete Works" version is much better suited for the younger audience.

  5. -- but the good ones are very good.

The disc starts with samples of Plympton's early, student work. That's probably of interest to the hard core Plymptomaniac, but I'm not in that category. I found them missable.

Some of the later pieces are outstanding, though. "Your Face" is a twisted classic, an non-stop exercise in transformation. "How to Kiss" (especially the 'nibbling kiss') and "25 ways to stop smoking" are among the more memorable.

Plympton's usual style is spare, simple scenes on a blank white background, drawn in colored pencil. Given the amount of computer-generated japanimation around, it's an enoyable change of pace.

Don't come to this animation looking for "Bugs Bunny" or "Fantasia." It's in a different class altogether. If you're ready for a different look, and for some mind-bending takes on everyday events, give it a shot. You might find yourself hooked.

  1. This DVD covered mostly the last flight of the recon F4s stationed at Reno.

It was very informative in a way except it was rather limited when it comes to different variation of the F4s. Thus, I believe the title is a little misleading.
