5 comments about Walk the Line (Full Screen Edition).
  1. Here we have the rather luscious and dangerous Joaquin Phoenix channeling Johnny Cash in WALK THE LINE. At the literal heart of the movie is Cash's longstanding and long-unrequited love for June Carter (the ever ebullient Reese Witherspoon finally being allowed to put her Nashville accent to good use) and the trials and travails he must suffer before finally settling down with the love of his life. From the foot-stomping power of the very first scene, music is the thread that binds these two restless hearts and what makes the movie even more remarkable is that Phoenix and Witherspoon did all of their own singing!

(Originally published on the website of author Teresa Medeiros at www.teresamedeiros.com)

  2. Being A Johnny Cash fan, I loved this movie...
Joaquin Phoenix really resembles "The Man In Black"

    Reese Witherspoom resembles June Carter
the only question that I have is :Couldn't they( the people at
the movie studio ) have taught them how to sing?

I'm tired of movies in which the stars only lip synch to the sound track( Sweet Dreams is the best example of this fraudulant practice)
Since ,this is a biopic ,I'd Expect Joaquin Pheonix to at least to play the guitar, instead of faking it!!

  3. James Mangold, the director who brought us such flawed but interesting
films as Copland and Girl, Interrupted, has done it again. He has
crafted another flawed but interesting film, Walk The Line, named after
one of Cash's biggest musical hits; this one on the life of Johnny
Cash. Actress Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar for Best Actress for her
portrayal of Cash's wife June Carter Cash, of the famed Carter Family
singers, and while she's solid, competent, the award she won is merely
another way for Hollywood to elevate the bankability of sexy young
starlets- think Marissa Tomei, Mira Sorvino, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia
Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Hilary Swank, Renee Zellwegger, Charlize
Theron, and now Witherspoon. Financially, for the long term of the
industry, this makes sense, so that, even decades from now, films they
appear in can bear the Oscar imprint.

Joaquin Phoenix, who portrays Cash, however, is completely out of his
league as the infamous Man In Black....Cinematographer Phedon
Papamichael adds little to the film. His framing and vistas do little
to enhance texture of the scenes, nor do they add an unconscious poetic
element. Despite globetrotting, Cash's life is portrayed as static and
dull, and the love story is nothing great. What Mangold does not grasp
is that the real reason cash is worthy of a film is because of his
singing and songwriting. When will biopics about artists actually focus
on the art, and not the soap operatic stuff? But, if they are going to
focus on the peripherals, one would think they'd play up the
fascinating stuff, the legendary stuff, not the usual crap all people
go through, for that merely shows that the subject is like the viewer,
when the fascination stems from what the subject has that is NOT like
the average person. In other words, as the saying goes, always print
the legend over the truth. Walk The Line never trots down that alley.

  4. I was always a mild fan of Cash's music, so I wasn't entirely devoted to seeing this movie. I did not see it until obtaining the DVD, and at that moment I fell in love with it.

Honestly, I don't know all that much about the man's life so I am not here to be the historical critic. Even so, I believe that this is more or less factual minus the obligatory artistic license. All I know is that it made for a great, great movie.

Joaquin Phoenix... I don't know how he is in comparison to the Man in Black, but I love him and I thought he did well. He has that stoney gaze and voice, at least. Reese Witherspoon certainly earned her Oscar.

With me, I like a good story, and that is what this movie had. Plenty of heart, intrigue, character, and emotion. Yes, I wept.

I don't think this is just for Cash fans. This is for anyone who loves music and a great story.

  5. this may be a good movie but I paid for my order and never received it. I am disappointed about this. I know it is not the sellers fault; they did ship it; but I never received it . I may try to order it again.

5 comments about A Christmas Story (Full Screen Edition).
  1. I love this movie it makes you laugh and cry. By the way have you ladies seen Peter Billingsley (Ralphie) lately? He is SOOOOOOOOO HOT.

  2. New Ultimate editions of A Christmas Story are coming out in standard definition and Blu-ray. It appears from the announcement that each will repackage the current version with special memorabilia. So, the standard DVD Ultimate edition will have the same DVDs as the 2003 2-disc Special Edition, and the Blu-ray Ultimate edition will have the same DVD as the 2006 Blu-ray. In addition, they'll have these non-DVD extras:

-- a collectible retro Christmas cookie tin (the container for the set)
-- 48-page cookbook with recipes inspired by the movie
-- photos and quotes from the movie
-- a red chef's apron with an A Christmas Story logo on it
-- 5 collectible cookie cutters "in iconic Christmas Story shapes" (looks like a star, a house, a leg lamp, Ralphie in his bunny suit, and what may be Peking Duck)

And the Blu-ray will have an exclusive strand of leg-lamp Christmas lights (see the Blu-ray page for a photo, the second thumbnail). Pretty cute.

There's nothing in the studio press release that indicates the new editions will be remastered.

The 2-disc Special Edition from 2003 and the Blu-ray from 2006 both have the same DVD special features, which are shared by the Ultimate editions:

-- audio commentary by director/co-writer Bob Clark and star Peter Billingsley (Ralphie)
-- two readings by Jean Shepard, author and narrator for the movie (audio only)
-- Another Christmas Story featurette, includes interviews with Clark and a few members of the cast
-- Get a Leg Up featurette, about the making and ongoing sale of the (in)famous leg lamp
-- A History of the Daisy Red Ryder featurette, on the object of great desire's actual history
-- Triple Dog Dare Interactive Trivia
    -- Decoder Match Challenge
-- easter eggs (including an actual ad for the leg lamp)
    -- original theatrical trailer

The video quality of the 2003 standard DVD release is fairly good, a bit soft, with good mono sound. It includes both the original 1.85:1 widescreen format (anamorphic) and full screen versions. The Blu-ray from 2006 is soft-looking for a hi-def version, with fairly good color and the same mono sound.

Now, about the really good stuff, the movie. A Christmas Story is that odd film that appeals to a cross-section of viewers who often can't agree on what to watch. Fans of sweet Christmas cheer are happily joined by people with a more jaundiced eye to the holiday. To be sure, the movie leans more to the sweet than the sour, but it has enough edge and good-natured twistedness to please some of our darker Christmas angels too. It conveys a genuinely warm nostalgia and some sharp, sometimes pretense-deflating observations about human nature.

The story is set at some indefinite time around 1940 in an Indiana town approaching the holidays. Young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) wants only one thing for Christmas, the Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Lightning Loader Range Model Air Rifle with a compass in the stock. (That is, a BB gun, a very particular one.) He plans carefully well in advance how to lay the groundwork for this while avoiding the dreaded rebuff, but almost everyone says it anyway: "You'll put your eye out!" The relentless struggle for the one true gift develops alongside several other small stories and amusing details, a tongue-on-frozen-pole triple-dog dare, facing the local bully, the notorious leg lamp, the Santa slide, Peking Duck for Christmas, and several others, each memorable in itself.

The actors aren't very well known, but they're all just right. There is narration throughout, representing an older Ralphie, done by the originator of the story, Jean Shepard, also just right.

This movie, made in 1983, has gradually become a favorite Christmas classic, now shown in an annual 24-hour Christmas marathon on cable, which attracts a huge number of viewers. If you've never seen it, give it a try, even if you have a little Scrooge in you, and you'll probably enjoy it. If you're a big fan, or know one, you might want the memorabilia with one of the new Ultimate editions for yourself or a gift. If you don't care about such extras, just get one of the older editions.

There are Amazon pages to pre-order the Ultimate editions here (standard DVD) and here (Blu-ray).

  3. My wife first saw this movie when she was a teenager....she saw it again when it appeared on Cable and recorded it :)Sadly, we moved and had to give the Cable/DVR box back, so we lost it...so I re-ordered it here on Amazon.com.If you only every see ONE Christmas movie, make it this one!!! You will NOT be disappointed!!!

  4. I have this movie in the full screen edition and am looking to upgrade to the Blu-ray edition. I watch this movie over and over between Thanksgiving and Christmas and it gets me in the holiday spirit. A Christmas classic that everyone should own.

  5. "A Christmas Story" is by far my family's favorite holiday movie! Our VHS tape wore out and we had to replace it with this DVD. We watch it at least twice during the Christmas season and once or twice in the summer. We also find ourselves quoting some of the classic lines all year round!

Based on great book, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, this movie captures the mania that built up around Christmas in almost every child in a more innocent age. The sub plots are well conceived and wonderfully woven into the story.

    HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!

5 comments about Sesame Street - Elmo's World - Happy Holidays.
  1. Although I generally love Elmo's World DVDs, I found the bias in this one troubling. Why is Kelly Ripa telling people about Kwanzaa? Shouldn't a black host be informing kids about this holiday? Kelly says she has never been to Africa. Well that's helpful. And then we get Kelly's take on Hanukkah, which also seems off. Really, she shouldn't be talking about either holiday.

Don't be fooled, this one's about Christianity and Christmas. This may seem extreme, but I really feel the subtext of this video is "if you aren't Christian, you are second class and you get a second class holiday." I expect more from these Sesame St videos, because so many supposedly intelligent people are supposed to be involved in making and approving them.

  2. We used to get this from our library every year. This would have been the third year to watch it for my soon to be five year old daughter but when I went to place it on hold at the library website I found out that their only copy had been lost. How could I not spend nine bucks to complete my daughter's Christmas? She was so excited when I pulled it out of the box and wanted to watch it right away. She really would have flipped if she had known that there were also pink magnetix in the box. LOL!

  3. I bought this DVD approx. a month before Christmas for my almost 2 year old daughter. She watched the Elmo Happy Holidays DVD EVERY DAY and never got tired or bored of it. The DVD is entertaining, educational and fun to watch. It is a wonderful DVD for any child who loves Elmo and well worth the money.

  4. As an adult it is sometimes difficult to fully comprehend the impact of Elmo, but my kids really love him. This, according to them is a real favourite. It is however holiday oriented, but they do not mind and want to watch this one any time of the year actually. As I wrote, for an adult, this is inexplicable, but...it is better than other programmes, so I can only listen to their recommendation.

  5. This dvd is typical of a PC company trying to make peace with all religous holidays. i mean they go on and on for all holidays EXCEPT for CHRISTmas! i mean come on even non believers know what started the day of December 25 holiday we believers call CHRISTmas. It barley mentions Jesus stating he was a good teacher or something like that but goes on about santa claus. i know why sesame street does the things they do but i want to raise my kids to know Jesus and the real reason for the season! If you are a christian parent steer clear of this nonsense! Christmas eve on sesame street isn't so bad, i'm guessing because it was made before being a christian offended people!!

4 comments about The Perfect Holiday.
  1. When a movie is made for children, I try to look at it from a different viewpoint because of course an adult is going to see something that's extremely unrealistic from what a kid would pay attention to (ex. the mall being so close to where the children's father's Christmas party is that a little boy could run all the way there), so I'm going to leave out cons on this review simply because they'd all be issues where things weren't possible.

Pros: Although I initially went to see the movie and watch Union and Chestnut onscreen to see if they were the couple, I was more entertained with watching Katt Williams and Terrance Howard. I never considered Howard to be all that funny, but I loved his role in this movie. I looked forward to every scene he was in to see what goofy stuff he'd do. I'm pretty positive that Katt did a lot of improv in his work because those jokes were something he'd probably say on stand-up or on "Wild n' Out." That guy is so funny to me.

The movie was about a single mother with three children and a distant ex-husband who is a big rapper. The oldest son, who reminded me SO much of my oldest nephew and made me smile a lot because I kept relating the two, wants his parents back together, and the youngest child (the daughter) would rather make Mommy happy by using Santa Clause to get her wishes. How unselfish of a child to go for Mommy's wishes over the latest toy. Both the youngest and the oldest are almost competing at who will win the love on war and Christmas wishes to make for an amusing family-oriented tale. Although I spent most of my time waiting on Terrance Howard and Katt Williams to be in scenes, the rest of the movie was cool too. I'd recommend it to any family looking for a wholesome film about the holidays.

  2. The only reason i watched the whole thing is because i kept hoping it would get better, only it didn't. The scenes were awkward and the characters unbelievable. At the end, I was left disappointed and confused. I didn't understand why Terrance Howard and Queen Latifah signed up for this train wreck of a film. All this being said, i do not recommend this movie.

  3. I really loved this movie. It is funny and family orientated. I suggest that everyone get their family together and see this movie. I loved Gabriel Union and Morris Chestnut's (so handsome by the way)performance. I cannot wait for this movie to come out on November 11!! It is about time too!

  4. The Perfect Holiday is not necessarily a bad movie but its far from a good one too. While I admire a movie that does not try to be offensive and wants to be positive there is a thin line from being a little schmaltzy to laying it on real thick. The movie is not unwatchable. It has a talented all-star cast that do a decent job acting but the script is hackneyed and cheesy to a fault plus its pretty bland.

    Spoiler Alert!

The story: Gabriell Union plays Nancy, a newly divorced woman who's daughter overhears her conversation about what she wants from a man: a compliment. The daughter goes to a mall Santa(played by Morris Chestnut) named Benjamin and wishes that her mom gets a compliment by her man. Benjamin(Chestnut) gives Nancy a compliment and soon they begin to date. Problems arise when Nancy's naive son, John John gets annoyed by Benjamin because the little tyke misses his arrogant and thoughtless wannabe-rapper father J-Jizzy(played by Charlie Murphy)who would rather be large than be with his family. Then things get even more complicated for the relationship between Nancy and Benjamin when J-Jizzy asks for Benjamin, who also sings to record with him. Queen Latifah plays Mrs Christmas, an angel who is also the narrator of the movie.

Opinion: Positive: this movie is not terrible. Negative: but its not memorable either. Positive: it has an all-star cast. Negative: they are all wasted on a script that pulls every Christmas cliche out of the book.
Positive: The Perfect Holiday is earnest and has a heart. Negative: its syrupy to the point of cheesiness. Positive: it makes an effort at humor. Negative: The humor misses more than it hits. Positive: Its the least offensive Christmas comedy ever made. Negative: It wallows in mediocrity like pigs do in mud. Positive: Its great to see a movie especially an African-American film that is not based on sex and violence. Negative: Its kind of bland and the schmaltzy scenes are a bit much. All in all I would recommend this movie to you if you want to see a Christmas movie starring African Americans that is not offensive but Last Holiday is much better. Perfect Holiday is far from a stinker but when compared to great movies like Soul Food, The Wood, The Inkwell, Love Jones, Brown Sugar etc Perfect Holiday can easily be forgotten.

5 comments about Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.
  1. If you are a fan of "A Christmas Carol" like I am then you will like this film. If you just have a passing interest then there are better versions.

  2. The movie was a different version of the Scrooge. It wasn't as good as I remembered.

  3. Not quite, but I have very fond memories of watching this on TV in the years after its release. I am pretty sure that it was the first Christmas Carol I ever saw. Its primary appeal will be to boomers like me. In the beginning Mr. Magoo plays himself, driving the wrong way through midtown Manhattan traffic, but after that, he is in character as Scrooge during a fairly traditional rendition of this holiday classic as a Broadway musical. The very basic animation is what you would expect. The highlights for me are the half dozen or so original tunes that make this seasonal treat special. Pair it with The Snowman and you are guaranteed to be ready for the holidays.

  4. Perhaps nostalgia for childhood Christmas memories causes me to wax overly positive on Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.

After all, a plethora of better productions with live actors are available. The animation is far from Disney-quality. And, of course, many people can't stand Jim Backus' Mr. Magoo character.

However, this cartoon Christmas Carol has a number of virtues, including a strict, if abbreviated, fidelity to the original story, a great score with quality production and catchy/heart-rending songs, and the voice of the late, great Jim Backus.

The versions shown on TV have been brutally edited. It's definitely worth buying the DVD if you enjoy the show, and it's a great introduction to the story for children.

  5. Okay, I admit I'm biased. I first saw MISTER MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL in 1962, when it was first broadcast on TV and sponsored by Timex. I fell in love with it immediately, and subsequent viewings over the years have not diminished its beauty and, yes, power. A cartoon that grabs you by the heart and doesn't let go? Yep, it sure does.

The Nearsighted Mister Magoo as Ebenezer Scrooge? One of the great casting ideas of all time. A brilliant move by Abe Levitow, producer and director of the well-loved Magoo shorts. I don't know who originally came up with the idea, but the UPA gang took it and ran. They hired only the best to score this venture with brand new, memorable songs: Broadway legends Bob Merrill and Jule Styne (and legend has it that their new song, "People", was slated to appear in CHRISTMAS CAROL, but it was composed too late to get to the animators, who need a long production period. Wow.) The songs the duo composed for CHRISTMAS CAROL are outstanding, and would grab an audience whether on TV, in film, or on the stage. "Back on Broadway", "I'm All Alone in the World", "Winter Was Warm", "We're Despicable", and all the rest are absolutely top-drawer. And can you believe there was never a soundtrack album?

Now to the voices: the incomparable Jim Backus supplied Magoo with humor, pathos, deep emotion and so much more than you would expect from a two-dimensional animated character. Jim, we miss you something awful. Also on hand to lend their not inconsiderable talents are Morey Amsterdam (from the Dick Van Dyke Show), Jack Cassidy (Broadway star and TV stalwart, memorable as Ted baxter's brother on the Mary Tyler Moore Show), Royal Dano (whose basso tones graced many a voiceover, and was a character actor in hundreds of film and TV roles), the legendary Paul Frees (voice man par excellence, whom you have seen onscreen in THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, and whom you will instantly recognize as the dastardly Boris Badenov), as well as Jane Kean, John Hart, Les Tremayne and others.

Barbara Chain's teleplay, based on the Dickens classic, is spare and emotional, getting right to the heart of the story. You forget you are watching animated characters and chuckle, dread and cry at all the best places.

In all, an outstanding production, and one that is a must for your DVD library.

This new 2007 DVD edition, from Genius Products and Classic Media, contains the full 53-minute program (which for years was cut down when shown on TV), production notes, cast biographies, and the hilarious original cartoon in which Magoo babysits Gerald McBoing Boing (Gerald is cast as Tiny Tim in CHRISTMAS CAROL). The presentation is full screen, just as it was in 1962. Transfer of the film stock is excellent, and the sound is clear and rich Mono.

Can I recommend MISTER MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL any higher? No. It is as good as it can get.

5 comments about Angel in the Family.
  1. The idea of this film is false, and not remotely realistic, which no other reviewers seem to mention! Meridith is great as always, and the characters, apart from the father, are realistic enough, but hardly superb. There are a lot of missing elements in the plot lines. Both girls hate each other and feel their lives are harder than anyone elses, which in some ways is realistic, other ways, pathetic. The dad is acting a little too hard all the way through. He seems out of his mind and like he should be avoided. At times Meridith is invisible, at other times, not. I don't believe, and the bible does not teach that people die and become angels, so the whole idea is goofy. But for young kids, be aware that it is about death and life after death, not really something for young kids.

However, there are some bright spots. The idea that the mom held the family together is quite realistic, and something folks can relate to. The idea that the little things we do affect our future, or even eternity is clear and note worthy. It started some conversations and thoughts going in our family. Not really a feel good movie for the holidays, but definitely of the Christmas sort. I wouldn't buy it. Rent it if you want an evening with adults, but again, not the best out there.

  2. The idea of reconciliation and completing loose ends is good but many don't have a second chance after they die!

a soso movie with a peaceful feel except when the psychological monster fights with her sister.

  3. I haven't had a chance to view the product but was very happy with the time it took to arrive.

5 comments about A Room with a View (Two-Disc Special Edition).
  1. A Room with a View was only Bonham-Carter's second film, made when she was nineteen. To watch her in it, one would imagine her to be a much more experienced actress. Her performance strikes just the right balance of humor and drama and combined with clever dialogue, a dramatic, passionate plot, gorgeous scenery, and a Puccini-driven score, makes for an award-worthy film.

Don't think for a minute that this is some staid, English period piece. A Room with a View is a rolicking journey through Italy, London, and the English countryside, in the company of several fine performers: Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliot, Judi Dench, and Daniel Day-Lewis. Julian Sands turns in a charming performance as a secret suitor to Bonham-Carter's Lucy Honeychurch.

The only caution I can make is the male nudity in the film's bathing scene. While it does add to the humor of the picture, I feel the full frontal nudity went too far. Did we really need to see three sets of family jewels dangling out in the open air? Leave a little to the imagination, but don't leave this one on the shelf.

  2. There is so much to like about about the Merchant-Ivory production of A Room With a View that I couldn't wait to see it with all the detailed glory possible from an HD-DVD. But I wanted to hear it too, and alas, with this Warner/BBC version of the disc I could not: It does not have a Dolby or even a basic 2-channel soundtrack. Just DTS HD.

Amazon had nothing on the site to warn of this. A sad oversight.

  3. this is a great movie created with such a good taste, with great actors, specially Helena Bonham Carter.

  4. DVD would not work in any of my players even the new ones. It came with a little note in it that tells you you need new software to get it to run in most DVD players. I am returning it.

  5. THE BLU-RAY IS VERY VERY GOOD IN VIDEO ALSO CONSIDERING THE AGE OF THE MOVIE. THE ITALIAN EDITION ON DVD WAS UNWATCHABLE AND THAT'S THE REASON I BOUGHT THIS BLU-RAY. THE ONLY PROBLEM FOR ME IS THAT THERE IS NO ITALIAN LANGUAGE. THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION IS WRONG

  1. VERY FUNNY, A GOOD HOLIDAY FAMILY MOVIE!!

    CECELIA P.
    LOS ANGELES, CA.

  2. Deck the Halls
Bought this as I started seeing it on a Bus trip to New York, and the dvd was damaged - after seeing the beginning, wanted to see the rest. Really good. Laughed alot, which is what everyone needs.

  3. If I could give this movie no stars, I would! Bad, lame, boring, cheap and annoying! Deck the Halls is possibly the worst Christmas movie I have ever seen in my entire life! It was boring, and had no point or story line! Dont waste your time snuggling in front of the fire watching this junk!

  4. Christmas movies are either very good, or very bad. Deck the Halls falls into the latter. When Danny DeVito is on the television show 'The View' and expresses how much he hates this movie, you know you are in for a stinker.

I never considered Matthew Broderick to be much of an actor. Nothing against the guy, I was just never a fan. His character is a conservative, nerdy optometrist who deems himself 'The Christmas Guy'. He is very much into traditions, much to his family's pain.

So in comes 'Buddy' played by Danny DeVito. He gets it into his head that he wants a house that can be viewed from space. That's it. That is the only reason the plot moves forward and it is absurd. His hot twin daughters showed him an internet site which shows people's houses from space and his house cannot be seen. If you had a wife that looked like that would you really care?? But this is supposed to be a sappy Christmas story, so here we go.

Matthew and Danny's characters begin to hate each other. Buddy does his house lights that would have made Clark W. Griswald green with envy. He also has a living manger complete with live cows, sheep, and a camel. Matthew is jealous and can't get any sleep at night, so he attempts to sabotage Buddy's electrical system, of course not only does Buddy have a large, noisy portable generator, he's stealing power from his own house to run his insane light show. The final straw comes when Dr. Finch tries to assault Buddy's house with illegal fireworks. The idiot can't even do that right.

Of course the wives get tired of all the foolishness and go to a hotel for the holidays. Buddy and the good Doctor Finch decide to make up, bury the hatchet, and set things right with the wives. This is where it gets even more ridiculous than even I could have imagined.

First off, they decorate the hotel with lights, and have huge Christmas light displays decorating a path back to the house. The town has become a ghost town at this point, the lights do not interfere with traffic, and there is NOBODY else to be seen anywhere. Then they get back to the house
and see that the two husbands have set up a lavish Christmas dinner. This is all very well and good, but come to find out they never eat it and I suppose everything goes bad. They do not eat it because no MTV is at Buddy's house wanting to do a story on the loser who wants his house seen from space.

But of course now he has no lights on his house because he used them all to decorate a five mile path from the house to the hotel (I imagine that must have been wrecked when MTV News crews and the entire town show up all at once outside Buddy's door by the way). So ala 'It's a Wonderful Life', everyone donates lights to Buddy so he can redecorate his house. Boo hoo hoo.

This is a terrible terrible terrible movie.

  5. This could very well be the worst movie I have ever seen. Every gag is predictable, boring and unfunny. I can't believe two performers the caliber of Broderick and DeVito allowed themselves to become involved in this horrible mess. Yeeeeccch!
