1. My 14 month old daughter absolutely loves this book. She'll flip through the pages and lift the flaps. Some of the flaps are tricky for her, since they don't all just lift up.
   
   Her favorite part is the last page of the book, where Maisy gives the reader a present - another book! It is a small book that shows each of the characters playing with the gifts. It is not a board book, so it can be easily destroyed. She sometimes just flips to the end and wants to get out that little book.
   
   As with almost any flap in any book, the paper is thinner and can be easily torn. We've had to tape a few already. But my daughter is getting the hang of it, so soon we won't have to!
   
   The pages are not heavy duty board book pages. I wouldn't give this to very small kids. It would likely get ruined with drool. The covers are hard cover, so that helps.
   
   I just realized that amazon has two versions of the book - one being a mini book. I'm not sure what that is. We have the full size book with ISBN 0763625132.

1. We are studying the history of holidays for our Kindergarten year of homeschooling. "True Books: Independence Day" is a great jumping off point for our 4th of July study, briefly covering from Columbus to the present. It shouldn't be the only book you read though. I highly recommend reading the biography, "George Washington" by D'Aulaire and "Red, White, and Blue (All Aboard Reading)" by Herman with it. And if you want something just for fun... get "Yankee Doodle" by Gary Chalk.
   
   I'm not sure what the reading level is... but as a read-aloud I feel that it works in the 5-8yr old range. The 9-12 age recommendation on the Amazon description seems off to me. If you are looking for a book in that range, try "Fireworks, Picnics, and Flags: The Story of the Fourth of July Symbols" by Giblin. For preschoolers I would suggest looking at the Independence Day (Rookie Read-About Holidays)series which has similar titles. This one was too much for my 3.5 year old to sit through.
   
   I will be getting more books in this series.

1. In this sequel to THE WAY TO SCHENECTADY, Jane Peeler, 13, writes clever, funny poems to put to the music of The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky. His music and her poems make a great play and her class at school is performing Jane's work at their Winter Concert. Jane is the director, since she dreamed up the whole thing. Plus, she's bossy enough to tell everybody what to do and smart enough to know how things should be. But, as she discovers, that isn't all there is to directing.

   Problem number one is the coach. He won't let her class use his gym for rehearsals. Then her best friend, Patti, who plays the heroine, gets a crush on Brad, who plays the hero. Their friendship starts to dissolve as Patti thinks that Jane is too friendly with Brad---and she thinks Jane bosses her around too much. Another student, Jiri, has a big body and a big heart, but a slow brain. He can't remember his few lines. Jane is sorry she even gave him lines, but she can't take them away because he is so happy to be in the play.

   Jane has even more troubles at home. Her father gets pneumonia. He's the one who takes care of her and her brothers while her mother works. Things get so bad when her mother has to stay home that Jane's grandmother has to come help.

   Jane is smart and determined. She knows the play will go on in spite of everything. Like everybody else, she just doesn't know how. You will enjoy reading this book to see how Jane shows nothing can get in her way.
