1 comments about Weird And Wacky Festivals (On the Edge).
- There are many varieties of fun and this book illustrates some of the more unusual forms. La Tomatina is a giant tomato fight held annually in Bunol, Spain. Approximately 20,000 people from all over the world throw approximately 45 tons of raw tomatoes at each other. In Ivrea, Italy the fight is with oranges, however in Millsboro, Delaware the action is more scientific. Every autumn, there is a contest to see who can fire a pumpkin the farthest. The only rule is that explosives are disallowed, yet the record is an amazing 3,800 feet, which is almost three-fourths of a mile. Other festivals described are:
*) The cockroach races in Australia.
*) The rolling of cheese wheels in Gloucester, England
*) In Bognor Regis, England they attempt to create human flying machines
*) A mixture of soccer and rugby in Florence, Italy
*) A Viking festival in York, England
*) Kinetic sculptures in Arcata, California
*) Radish sculptures in Oaxaca, Mexico
*) Ice sculpture in Sapporo, Japan
*) Crying baby contests in Japan
*) A mosque plastering festival in Mali, Africa
Written at the level of the late elementary and early middle school child, this book is an excellent introduction to some of the most unusual celebrations that take place around the world.

2 comments about Gymnastics Journal & Meet Survival Guide.
- Rik Feeney has created a beautiful book that will keep young gymnasts happily engaged before, during, and after meets. The photo-drawings alone are worth the price of the book. Where was this book when my daughter was competing?
- If there's one thing young girls LOVE to do, it's write in a journal. Rik Feeney's "Gymnastics Journal & Meet Survival Guide" is informative AND great fun. Along with gymnastics backgrounds on the journal pages, he's also included leotard design pages and meet tracking forms. This would make a terrific gift for any gymnast. Wish we'd had something like this when my daughters were involved - now I can send one to my granddaughter, though!
