1. Geared for youngsters ages 4 and up "Sleigh Bells and Snowflakes" is a happy collection of holiday poems and songs.

   Young eyes and ears will joyfully respond to the perceptive and perky words of the beloved Ogden Nash: "Smooth clean and frost white The world looks good enough to bite. That's the season to be young, Catching snowflakes on your tongue," and learn to hum along to the familiar lyrics of "Silver Bells."

   Whether witty or moving there is something for everyone to be found in this treasury of the familiar and the new.

   Linda Bronson used clay, collage and paint to artfully bring these selections to life.




2. My 3 year old absolutely loooooves this book. Each page has about 3 or 4 pieces of packing tape on it because it has been read, re-read, over and over again and it's only 6 months old. It's the MUST book for reading at night, and she carries it around the house non-stop. She's memorized every song and poem, recognizes which song goes with which picture. She's going to learn to read with this one I'm sure. For the parent, it's pretty enjoyable and contains quite a few familiar "mature" holiday songs. There are quite a few I don't recognize but it doesn't keep us from making tunes up. There are one or two blaring Christian poems/songs, but if you don't mind it, it's a great book.

1. 2. What a wonderful way to introduce kids to this special time of year! The various sensations just makes everthing come to life!



3. A Touch of the High Holidays is a novelty board book. It includes all the Jewish holidays that occur in the month of Tishri, from Rosh Hashanah to Simchat Torah. Two page spreads describe several aspects of each holiday before settling on one that is reinforced by something to touch. Feel the many textures of our holidays - the stickiness of honey, the smoothness of a machzor cover, the bumpiness of an esrog, and the velvety softness of a Torah cover. Best of all, children will see themselves in a sukkah. Definitely a hands-on winner.

1. It's Saturday Night and all the rich and famous beast in New Orleans gather at the Beastro for good food and fun. Some of the famous dishes served there are Free Range FireFlies, Worm Souffe', and Lizard cookies!
   
   
   The story didn't flow very well. Lots of the rhyming test seemed forced.
   This book would be on okay book to read around Halloween due to the pictures of "beast". There are better choices out there in our opinion.

1. It's Christmas by Tina Burke
   Oh the magic of Christmas traditions. The story is simple and each page illustrates a preparation for the holidays. For example, the text "There are things to do...." is accompanied by an illustration of a boy making Christmas cookies and "...and people to see" shows a girl on Santa's lap. 1. I truly enjoyed To Every Season: A Family Holiday Cookbook. The book encompasses recipes for 16 major American holidays, including Christmas, Mother's Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. I found the prefaces to each holiday section fascinating and filled with delightful historical tidbits. The book has wonderful multicultural leanings with its inclusion of recipes for Passover, Kwanzaa, and Chanukah. I would have liked to have seen more recipes that could be made by or with children. The book caters more to adult tastes and preferences than to those of children. Children will enjoy the pictures and reading about the different holiday traditions.

1. This children's book tells the Día de los Muertos story through the eyes of bilingual Sacramento, California-based twins, aged ten, named Ximena and Azucena. The book tells the family history to illustrate the strong ties between the American family and its native Mexico. In 1974, the twin's father was an integral part of bringing Día de los Muertos to Sacramento. This book gives a very detailed history of Día de los Muertos that I didn't come across in any other children's books. It explains much of Aztec culture, including their Creation Myth, and how Día de los Muertos began. Then, Spanish conquistadors came into contact with these people, and their Catholic influence altered their traditions, and Halloween was beginning to brew in Europe simultaneously. Finally, it discusses how Mexican-Americans have another unique take on celebrating the holiday. Then, the book outlines the celebration, many pages on the ofrendas (with more elaborate detail than other books in this bibliography) a section on the masks of Día de los Muertos (another facet of the fiesta that isn't covered in other books), and the procession a family takes from its home to the cemetery. It also contains a glossary of the Spanish words used throughout the book with its definition.
